2: A BRIEF INTRODUCTION:
2

2: 1 Location of the school

Ndolage School of Nursing is in the same premises with Ndolage Hospital, which is one of the wellknown Hospitals in Kagera Region. The school is in Muleba District, about 1500km from Dar es
Salaam. 60 km South West of Bukoba town, 40 km North West of Muleba District headquarter and
about 5 km from Kamachumu shopping center in Kamachumu Ward.
2: 2 General Information
Both the school and the hospital belong to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania North
Western Diocese. Ndolage School of Nursing has been training nurses since 1954 with great success.
In 1997 the school was upgraded from a certificate level course to an Integrated Diploma Course in
Nursing and Midwifery. The school is registered and accredited by The National Council for
Technical Education as well as recognized by Tanzania Nurses and Midwives Council.
Currently the school runs three nursing programs simultaneously; that is a Pre-service 3 years
Diploma in Nursing program (NTA Level 6), Pre-service certificate in Nursing program (NTA Level
5) and a one year In-service Diploma in Nursing program (NTA Level 6)
3:0 School Vision
A sustainable and excellent church institution producing competent nurses.
3:1 School Mission
Ndolage School of nursing is committed to train student nurses through modern teaching and learning
technologies, good management of resources and promoting students welfare.
3: 2 School Philosophy
We believe that our school will maintain high standards of nursing education and stimulate students in
learning and understanding the responsibilities of a professional nurse in any context.
3:3 School Motto
Success comes through persistent efforts and determination.

3:4 Primary Aim

3

To produce qualified and competent nurses and midwives who will work for The Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Tanzania/North Western Diocese and serve Gods people inside and outside the
country at large.
3:5 School Objectives
1. To advertise the nursing training course and enroll eligible candidates for the course.
2. To meet the educational needs of trainees through continuous needs assessment and planning.
3. To promote the environment that is conducive for teaching and learning for both trainers and
trainees and encourages current professional development and professionalism.
4. To demonstrate competence in teaching through the quality of the products of our school.
4: STUDENTS
Most students are Tanzanians, drawn from different regions of the country and we had only one
student from Kenya.
4: 1 Recruitment
School advertisements were sent out through different Medias that included local radio programs and
different posters. Application forms for in-service were also distributed at different centers in the
region and sold at Tsh. 15,000/=. Applicants for in-service program filled in forms and returned them
to school attached with their form four examination results as they were instructed as well as their
copies of certificate in nursing. Ten candidates were selected to join the in-service one year Diploma
program.
For pre-service program the recruitment procedure was through the Central Admission System which
was conducted by NACTE in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
Applications were submitted through on-line. Eligible candidate were selected and each institution
had to obtain a list of its selected candidate in the internet. Selected candidates for both certificate and
diploma programs were informed and joining instructions sent to them by the principal through their
contact addresses. Challenges with this system was mainly based on communication procedures
whereby some Institutions could not receive adequate number of students according to their capacity
while other candidates could not present themselves in time to institutions where they were supposed
to report.

4: 2 Selection Criteria
The selection of new students was done following the criteria laid down by the Ministry of Health
and Social Welfare- (Training department and Tanzania Nursing and Midwifery Council-TNMC)
as follows:
o Form four or form six graduates.
o For the Diploma Course should have a credit in Biology, Chemistry and a pass in Physics.
o For the certificate course eligible candidate should have a minimum pass of D in those three
subjects i.e. Biology, Physics and Chemistry.
o For both levels Mathematics and English are added advantages.
As explained earlier the selection process was done on line by NACTE together with the
MoHSW.

11. STUDENTS RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES

Tanzania Students Christian Fellowship and Tanzania Youth Christians Students religious
organizations were active throughout the year in various religious activities which included:

Leading evening prayers among students themselves at the school chapel

Organizing and leading Wednesday fellowships.
Leading Thursday evening devotion at the Hospital Chapel.
Singing (choir) at Ndolage congregation every Sunday and outside Ndolage on invitation.
Participated actively in Easter Conference competition and won the first prize.

12: STUDENTS SELF-RELIANCE ACTIVITIES.

Students continued participating in self reliance activities such as keeping school environment and
their dormitories clean whereby every student has got his/her small portion to work on and maintain
cleanliness weekly .They also worked in their small plots of banana plantations by weeding, planting
beans and maize.
13: STUDENTS RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Students participated in sports especially football, volleyball and table tennis. Occasionally they had
friendly matches with other teams within the region. Sometimes they also had dances among
themselves during the evening time. But they also entertained themselves with radio programmes,
television in their recreation room. School choir, HIV/ AIDS youth club, drama were among students
entertainment as well as educative activities.
14: ACHIEVEMENTS
1. We completed the training program as scheduled in the curriculum and the graduation
ceremony was on 30th August 2014.
2. Through the limited school budget we have managed to continue supporting staff to further
their education. One Nurse Tutor graduated successfully with an award of Bsc. degree in
Nursing Education from Bugando University and another one is in his second year perusing a
Diploma at SLADS-Bagamoyo (School of Library Archives and Documentation Studies).
10

3. We managed to get permission by TNMC to start a one year diploma program for in-service
certificate nurses and we started in September with seven students.
4. We carried out renovation of some buildings and added more mattresses (25 mattresses)
5. We were able to repair and improve dining hall tables and added more benches for students to
sit.
6. Through the new Central Admission System we managed to admit a total of 55 new first year
students.
7. We have planted about 200 trees.
8. We prepared a self evaluation report and submitted to NACTE, a process for renewal of
accreditation.
9. Our school farming project and animal husbandry has assisted the school a little bit
financially.

15: CHALLENGES.
1. We are faced with financial constraints in such a way that we cannot fulfill our wishes. Most
self sponsored students are not in position to pay school fees in time.
2. We are lacking a computer laboratory and an adequate IT room to accommodate a good
number of students at a time.
3. We have not managed to get internet connectivity.
4. The school car is getting old and old and it is becoming expensive to maintain.
5. We dont have an electricity back-up which leads to a lot of inconveniences when there is
electricity cut off.
16: FUTURE PLANS.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

To purchase a stand- by generator to back-up electricity supply in case of a cut off.

Finish up the multipurpose hall.( flooring and furniture)
Install an internet connection.
Improve school small projects to assist with school income
Try hard to find funds to meet school plans of improving teaching/learning environment

17: VISITORS
The school has appreciated the visitation of delegates from Partners, Churches, from Tanzania and
Abroad, Government and ELCT/NWD Officials, and other friends of Ndolage who continue to show
their interest with the school. Again you are warmly welcome for more visits.
