Teaching and Learning Activities


1) Pre Activity (5 minutes)
- The teacher greets the students.
- Teacher asks the students to pray together.
- The teacher checks the present list.
Apperception
- The teacher asks each student to write down a sentence on a piece of paper.
Each student are free to choose which sentence they want to write.
What did you do last Sunday?
Where did you do last holiday?
- The teacher asks the students to switch the paper to their friend beside them.
Then, each student has to answer the question on the paper they get in two
minutes.
- The teacher then asks them to return the papers.
- The teacher asks some students to read their friends answers.
- The teacher asks some questions leading to the material.
- Ex:
o Who went to Bali?
o How was the speakers holiday in Bali?
o Did the speaker enjoy it?
Motivation
- The teacher tells the importance of the lesson, the competencies and the
objective of the lessons that should be reached by the students.
2) While Activity (25 minutes)
Exploration
- The teacher explains the definition, the purpose and the characteristics of
recount text and gives the example by showing the caption.
Recount Text
Procedural text is a text that tells the readers about what happened in the past.
The purpose is to document a series of events for entertaining or informing the readers.
If you tell about a story in the past, it means that you make a recount text.
Features (Generic structures)
A recount text has three components
Orientation
: provides the setting and introduces participants
Sequence of events : tell what happened in chronological order
Re-orientation
: optional-closure of events
The common grammatical patterns of a recount text

The use of nouns and pronouns to identify people, animals or things involved.
The use of action verbs to refer the events.
The use of past tense to locate events in relation to writers time.
The use of conjunctions and time connectives to sequence the events.
Example:

Elaboration
- The teacher gives exercise in pairs in ten minutes.
My Bad Day
I had a terrible day yesterday. First, I woke up an hour late because my alarm clock didn
go off. Then, I was in such a hurry that I burned my hand when I was making breakfast. Afte
breakfast, I got dressed so quickly that I forgot to wear socks.
Next, I ran out of the house trying to get the 9:30 bus, but of course I missed it. I wante
to take a taxi, but I didn't have enough money.
Finally, I walked the three miles to my school only to discover that it was Sunday! I hop
I never have a day as the one I had yesterday.

Answer: The writer had a terrible day yesterday.
2. Why did he wake up an hour late?
Answer: Because the writers alarm clock didnt go off.

Answer: The writer finally walked to school.

Answer: The writer realized that it was Sunday.

The teacher asks the students to answer the questions by using Talking Stick
method. The teacher gives a stick / a ball to one of the students. Then they
should pass the stick to others while singing. If the teacher asks them to stop,
then the student who has it in his hand has to answer one question, and the game
continues until all of the questions is answered.
Confirmation
- The teacher and the students discuss the answers.
3) Post Activity (20 minutes)
- The teacher summarizes the lesson.
- The students are asked to do the evaluation individually in 5 minutes.
- Praise the students for their active participation.
- Closure and leave-taking.

Meeting a Star
On Saturday morning at 9:30, I was walking down Sunda Street, looking for a record
store. A man stopped me and asked me the way to the Hyatt Hotel. I wasn't sure exactly where it
was, but I walked with him to the end of Sunda Street. He was very friendly, and his face looked
so familiar. Then I remembered where the Hyatt was and told him how to get there. He thanked
me and tried to give me something. I thought it was money. I said 'no' at first, but he really
wanted me to have it, so I took it.
I found the record store and listened to a few records. D' Massive had a new record that
was number two in the top twenty. I decided to buy it. I looked in my bag for my wallet and
found a piece of paper the man gave me. It was a photo. I was so surprised! He was the vocalist
of the Massive band.

Camping

Last weekend, my friends and I went camping. We reached the camping ground after we
walked for about one and a half hour from the parking lot. We built the camp next to a small
river. It was getting darker and colder, so we built a fire camp.
The next day, we spent our time observing plantation and insects while the girls were
preparing meals. In the afternoon we went to the river and caught some fish for supper. At night,
we held a fire camp night. We sang, danced, read poetry, played magic tricks, and even some of
us performed a standing comedy.
