Three Gorges Dam

Introduction
The Three Gorges Dam is a china hydroelectric dam that constructed on
the Yangtze River, china. The Dam has the largest power station in relation
to installed capacity (22,500 MW).
It was a $24 billion project officially accepted in 1992 by the National People
Congress in china. The Construction of Dam was started in 1994 and
scheduled to be completed in 2009.
Dam has three parts:
1. the dam itself,
2. the ship locks, and
3. The ship lift.
The dam height is 600 feet and 1.3 miles lengthy.

Goals of the project

There are four goals of the project:
1. Flood Control: it will have a flood control capacity of 22.15 billion cubic
meters as with that capacity the reduction in the flooding accrues.
2. Power Generation: The Three Gorges Dam will produce about 84.6
billion kilowatt hours through hydroelectric turbine generators that will
meet the energy requirements of china.
3. Navigation: Ships of Chongqing will be able to transport goods towards
Shanghai through sea.
4. Tourism: because of the largest hydroelectric dam in the world, it will
increase tourists visiting China.

Time frame
From idea to completion it took almost of seventy years. From start working
to end it took almost of 19 years. The project is completed in 2013. The work
started in 1994.

Finance
The budget for the Three Gorges Projects estimated initially was 14.66 billion
USD of which

engineering structures investment was 8.15 billion USD and

Reservoir inundation transplantation cost was 6.51 billion USD.

It was estimated that the dynamic total investment will be under 29.29
billion USD, if the factors of price increased, construction period and debt
interests are taken into account, because the construction period is lengthy.
In reality after completion of project due to inflation and some other factors
the actual cost calculated was almost of 37 billion USD.

Biggest Challenge
After building Dam due to storage of water, almost of 139 inhabitant areas
have to be flooded. Migrating the people was the biggest challenge. As The
cost to migrating them covers almost the 45% of the total investment. The
government made their migrants in Hubei and Chongqing to make their
livings.

Most important goal

The most important goal was controlling the flood or reducing its impacts on
the land. As it effect a lot of land and people every year so controlling it was
the main purpose. With that shifting the power source from coal and oil to
hydropower to meet the future demand was also very important goal.

Companies
The China Three Gorges Corporation is a nationalized Chinese power
company, established on 27 September 1993. Responsibility of the company
is to construct the Three Gorges Dam project. That had to start producing
electricity in 2008.

CTG resides in one of the largest energy companies in the world with total
assets of 280.98 billion.
