Cultural Center Director


This positon oversees day-to-day operations of the Ilanka Cultural Center, and carries out the Native
Village of Eyaks goals for the development of the center. Primary duties include: Cultural spokesperson,
Raising funds for the Center through a variety of innovative ways: Managing the gift store, Artist Cache,
classes, membership and program grants to support the Centers activities.
This position exercises wide latitude in determining objectives and approaches to critical assignments.

Reports to: Executive Director
Salary Status: Exempt from Overtime

Salary Range: $25.00-$33.00 per hour


Schedule: Full Time 80 hrs per pay period

Responsibilities/Duties:
Develop and secure outside funding sources through grants and donations, in collaboration with other
staff and Ilanka Cultural Center Advisory Board.
Develops and oversees cultural programs such as:
a) Cultural training facility;
b) Ikumat dance group;
c) Crafting classes;
d) Youth cultural camps.
Oversees the day-to-day operation and security of the Ilanka Cultural Center.
Manages Cultural Center and gift shop budget working with NVE accounting department.
Performs public relations, community outreach, and marketing by:
a) Building effective partnerships within the community and state;
b) Establish and maintain network of artists, potential funders and exhibitors;
c) Represent native Village of Eyak culture to the City, public schools and Chamber of
Commerce, US Forest Service and State Troopers.
Provide cultural expertise and direction for programs, projects and organizations who want to
include local native information in their programs and projects.
Maintains museum operations including documentation of collection, curation and exhibits.
Supervises designated cultural center employees.
Serves as official liaison to Museum Alaska and other pertinent Museums and organizations.
Works with and facilitates meetings of the Ilanka Cultural Center Advisory Board
Educates through development of exhibits, publishing, tours, public speaking, teaching and research.
Develops facility procedures, collection, marketing and public relations plans.
Attends staff meetings regularly.
Attends workshops, conferences, and seminars to increase relevant knowledge and skills.
Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of Prince William Sound Native history, culture, language, traditions, values
Knowledge of history of the community, region, state
Knowledge of fiscal management
Knowledge of facility management
Knowledge of computers and word processing
Knowledge of the role of Ilanka Cultural Center on tourism
Knowledge of resource development
Ability to communicate and motivate effectively
Ability to function independently
Must possess a valid Alaska drivers license
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in art, art history, art education, museum studies, history or related field preferred.
High school degree or equivalent and relative training required. Four years office or retail management
required. Prefer experience in management or administration or combination of training and experience
sufficient to successfully fulfill the duties and responsibilities of this position. Must be willing to continue
education in the museum field.
Preference will be given to Native Village of Eyak members or their descendants.
Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters
while performing the essential functions for this job. Work is typically done in an office environment and
includes exposure to old remains, artifacts and other objects.
Performance Standard:
Regularly manipulate a variety of data via verbal, written and electronic media and related
equipment to complete all aspects of the director job duties.
Typically move about and lift up to 25 lbs to coordinate work.
Constantly use memory or otherwise access mental information pertinent to work.
Regularly be able to walk, bend, crouch and otherwise twist to supervise work.
