Mapletree Minhang Development Project conducts groundbreaking ceremony

Hong Kong Mapletree Investments Pte Ltds largest single investment
in China to date conducted the groundbreaking ceremony on 18 March
2013. And Aedas is proud to be the design architect for the Mapletree
Minhang Development Project. Having two retail and office mixed-use sites,
Mapletree Business City and VivoCity, Mapletree Minhang Development
Project has a site area of approximately 119,000 square metres and GFA
of about 297,000 square metres in total.

The whole development will have construction in three phases
- Mapletree Business City in Phase 1 and 3, and VivoCity in Phase 2. The
development will be the first large-scale commercial and retail mixed use
development in the district when completed. Works for Phase 1 is expected
to be completed in 2015.

The design of retail building is inspired by the traditional bamboo
weaving basket for bearing fish. The round building shape symbolises the Image: Aedas
sense of talents and wealth gathering. Through the fish scale and bamboo
weaving texture of the building faade, a vivid and prosperous scene is reflected, just like the jumping fish in the fish basket.

The retail shopping centre is round and elegant dish-shape, being located at the intersection of Qixin Road and Gudai Road and
aiming to create the new landmark in this region; 8-shaped circulation is designed for the retail interiors; the large space connecting
atrium and corridor creates more continuous retail interface and guide the pedestrian flow encircling the interior circulation.

Mr Quek Kwang Meng, Mapletrees Regional Chief Executive Officer of China and India said, Mapletrees Minhang Development
Project stems from the groups business model as an Asiafocused, real estate developer, investor and capital manager. Our team is
confident of replicating the expertise for large scale mixed-use developments in China and delivering value through our tested and
signature VivoCity and Mapletree Business City brands. n

its plan to drive the adoption of its Smart Energy solutions and services
across the Asia Pacific region.

Through this new business proceeding, NEC will continue to support
its vision of a New Energy Society by advocating efficient energy use to

Over the years, NEC has been actively supporting its commitment
to establish an energy-efficient society through various business projects.
It has commercialised electrodes for automotive lithium-ion rechargeable

In 2012, NEC Asia Pacific set up the Smart Energy Business Unit in

Enterprise verticals.

Mr Nobuaki Yoshioka, General Manager (Energy System Development Division) of the Smart Energy Business Unit at NEC Corporation,
Japan, said: As energy demand is expected to increase, NECs strong focus on the smart energy and ICT business will thus contribute to

HASSELL Studio set to achieve Australias newest Green Star Rating

Sydney, Australia International design practice HASSELL has registered Australias first Green Star Interiors project, with its soon-toopen studio in Sydney set to be one of the nations greenest offices.

The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) launched the new Green Star Interiors PILOT rating tool in 2012 to assess the
interior fitout of any building type, from schools and shops, to offices, bank branches and hotels.

The Green Star Interiors PILOT rating tool is a next generation Green Star rating tool, having evolved from the Green Star Office
Interiors rating tool.

HASSELL is a founding member of the GBCA, has been a
strong supporter of Green Star since its earliest days and sponsored
the development of this new rating tool. We are excited to be working
with HASSELL to test the Green Star Interiors credits on this flagship
project, and set new best practice benchmarks for sustainable interiors,
said the GBCAs Chief Executive, Romilly Madew.

Head of Knowledge and Sustainability at HASSELL, Brett Pollard,
said that supporting the new rating tool is a natural extension of the
practices commitment to sustainable design and an opportunity to
deepen their teams knowledge of a tool, which will be of relevance
to many clients.

We want our new home to be an exemplar of the latest
thinking in workplace design, as well as sustainability. Being involved
in piloting the new rating tool will allow us to really get to grips with
Green Star Interiors and apply the lessons learnt to our clients
Photo: HASSELL
projects as well as our own new workplace, said Mr Pollard.

The new HASSELL studio in Sydney will be located in a heritage wharf building at Walsh Bay and is the latest in a series of studios
HASSELL has designed for itself in repurposed buildings. The HASSELL Melbourne studio reinvigorated a disused warehouse building, its
award-winning Brisbane studio was once a bread factory and the Shanghai studio breathed new life into an old motorcycle factory when
it opened in 2010.

Managing Principal in the HASSELL Sydney studio, Matthew Pullinger, said that the new workplace will be both beautiful and
sustainable reflecting the practices broader design approach. We are looking forward to doing some of our greatest work in the Walsh Bay
studio.

Green Star Interiors will help our industry to deliver more productive, more sustainable and healthier indoor environments for
a much broader range of people, and we congratulate the team at HASSELL for its green leadership, concluded Ms Madew.

The GBCA seeks expressions of interest from projects, particularly in the education, retail and hospitality sectors, to achieve the
first certifications in their market segments. More information is available at www.gbca.org.au/interiors. n

of energy efficiency and environmental responsibility along with
Otis long-time emphasis on passenger safety and comfort. This
equipment includes the innovative Gen2 flat belt system that
replaces conventional steel ropes. The Gen2 Premier machines
compact size eliminates the need for a machine room. This

Revamped Shaw Centre to bring fresh new buzz to highly desired Orchard Road and Scotts Road junction
Singapore The owner of Shaw Centre and the owner of Shaw House
has appointed Shaw Brothers Limited to manage the renovation of
the new Shaw Centre retail mall and the construction of the Urban
Plaza at Shaw House.

Built in 1972, this will be the single biggest transformation
for Shaw Centre in close to three decades and will exploit its full
potential at the highly desired Orchard Road and Scotts Road
junction.

Mr Mark Shaw, Executive Vice President of Operations, Shaw
Organisation, commented: This transformation will bring Shaw
Centre in line with consumers expectations of a modern shopping
mall and create a fresh new buzz to Singapores famous Orchard
Road shopping belt. You can expect new brands and flagship stores,
a chic Urban Plaza at Shaw House, and seamless connectivity and
access to Orchard Road.

Mr Christopher Shaw, Executive Vice President of Film
Distribution, Shaw Organisation added: We made it a point to align
Shaw Centres positioning and target audience with that of Shaw
Theatres Lido. Our patrons are quality-savvy, they look for and are
willing to pay for quality experiences and products they appreciate
what The IMAX Experience has to offer as well as our slate of films
ranging from blockbusters to internationally acclaimed movies.
This revamp and the new tenant mix will reflect our aspiration to
bring a quality experience to our patrons and allow them to have
plenty to do prior to and after their movie.

The revamp of Shaw Centre is slated for completion in the
first quarter of 2014.
The new Shaw Centre has six key highlights:
1. Equalisation of levels between Shaw Centre and Shaw House
There will be a change in ceiling height for Shaw Centre and levelling
and renumbering of floors to match Shaw House. This will bring
about seamless connectivity and integrate the two malls, and offer
consumers an effortless shopping experience. A new basement will
also be added to Shaw Centre that will link to the Isetan supermarket
at Shaw House, and the current level which houses the Les Amis
Group of Restaurants will be named the mezzanine floor.
2. From a niche destination mall to a modern contemporary
shopping mall With local and international fashion brands, new
brands, flagship and concept stores, and comprehensive facilities for
a one-stop shopping experience, Shaw Centre will be transformed

that boasts Singapores first and largest Digital IMAX Theatre.
3. New chic Urban Plaza The strategic junction of Orchard Road
and Scotts Road will be transformed by the addition of a new Urban
Plaza, providing a new focal point to complete the transformation
of this iconic shopping junction. A brand new Urban Plaza will be
built over the terrace public concourse formerly located at Shaw
House. Complete with water features and skylight seating, the 1,000
square metres space will be a prominent and vibrant meetingpoint for shoppers, and an ideal location for red carpet events and
product launches.
4. Refreshing new faade The new Shaw Centre will feature
two-storey high floor-to-ceiling glass retail frontage with urban
verandas for merchandising that will be suitable for concept and
flagship stores. Cladding and vertical landscaping will offer a visual
respite for shoppers in the area, transforming the formerly exposed
carpark bays, whilst maintaining natural ventilation.
5. New basement food court A new basement food court will link
the basements of Shaw Centre and Shaw House. The food court will
be welcomed by shoppers and office workers, as there is currently
no food court on this side of Orchard Road and Scotts Road.
6. New covered walkway There will be a new covered walkway
connecting Shaw Centre and Pacific Plaza for the convenience of
shoppers and commuters. n

Shanghai Intelligent Building Technology confirms next edition and new venue
H o n g Ko n g T h e
Shanghai Intelligent
Building Technology
fair will continue its
goal of providing a
top regional platform
for Chinas rapidly growing intelligent building market, as it holds
its 7th edition from 25-27 September 2013. Jointly organised by
Guangzhou Guangya Messe Frankfurt Co Ltd, China Council for
the Promotion of International Trade Shanghai Pudong SubCouncil and Shanghai Hongshan Exhibition Service Co Ltd, the
fair is expected to play host to over 150 exhibitors showcasing
a range of technologies and solutions for building automation,
smart home development, generic cabling as well as security and
access control. The year 2013 signals several key developments
for the show, one of the biggest being a change in venue. For its
7th edition, the fair will be held at the Shanghai New International
Expo Centre.

Commenting on this new development, Mr Richard Li,
General Manager of Messe Frankfurt in China said: One of the
biggest reasons for moving the fair to this new venue was space.
The show is quickly growing in scale. And we were eager to offer
a venue that can accommodate more exhibitors and allow them
to build even bigger booths. This year the exhibition space will
be increased to approximately 10,000 square metres, a 67 percent
increase from last year.

In addition, we currently hold ISH Shanghai & CIHE
Shanghai International Trade Fair for Heating, Ventilation & AirConditioning at the same venue. For 2013, these two shows will
be held concurrently, allowing attendees to explore synergies
between the two integral components to building technology.
I believe these new developments will greatly aid suppliers and
professional buyers by maximising their time at the show.

The latest edition of the fair will be focused on the three core
themes currently in high demand across East China, Building Energy
Efficiency, Intelligent Cities and Smart Homes. And professionals
in property development such as system integrators, architects,
engineering designers and contractors remain as the fairs target
buyers. For the 2013 show, in order to assist buyers in meeting
relevant exhibitors, four thematic zones have been confirmed for
the specialties of Generic Cabling, Energy Management, Efficiency
and Building Automation.

Chinas smar t-city projects offer unlimited oppor tunities

for intelligent building suppliers
Energy-saving technology has become a prime concern of
Chinas building market. With the countr y s rapid economic
growth and ambitious urbanisation goals, proper ty owners
are making increasing calls for technologies and solutions
that provide better comfor t, convenience, energy efficiency
and safety in buildings. Coincidently, these demands have
led developers to incorporate advanced automation systems,
I nternet- of-Things and cloud computing technology into
their projects, three of the most pivotal components to the
development of intelligent buildings, and ultimately smar t
cities.

Smart-city development is currently one of the Chinese
governments top public works goals. According to the Ministry
of Housing and Urban-Rural Development from China, 90 areas
across the countr y, including 37 prefectural cities, 50 districts/
counties and three towns have been selected as pilot projects
for smart-city development. Numerous state-owned and private
enterprises are investing in the initiative. China Development
Bank, for example, has committed to lend USD 12.9 billion for
various smar t-city projects between 2013 and 2015.

Being one of the countrys most economically developed
areas, East China was one of the first regions where intelligent
buildings and smar t cities developed. By the end of 2013, East
Chinas intelligent building market is estimated to be wor th
USD 5.4 billion. Shanghai leads the regions intelligent building
market, as the need for relevant technologies is highest in the
city. This demand, and the numerous business oppor tunities
it provides to domestic and overseas industr y players, guides
the Shanghai Intelligent Building Technology fair s mission
of bringing together exper ts to share and obtain the latest
information from the global building industr y.

Shanghai Intelligent Building Technology is the sister
show of Guangzhou Electrical Building Technology and Beijing
I nternational Building Technology, and is headed by the
biennial Light + Building event in Frankfur t, which will take
place from 30 March-4 April 2014 in Frankfur t, Germany.

Siemens and Diamond Energy sign MOU to pilot demand response in the commercial building sector in
Singapore
Singapore Siemens and Diamond Energy
signed a Memorandum of Understanding
on 17 May 2013 to collaborate on the
fe a s i b i l i t y o f d e p l oy i n g c u s to m i ze d
technology for Interruptible Load (IL) in the
commercial building sector in Singapore.

The multi-phased collaboration
will commence with a pilot project at the
main 16-storey building of the Siemens
Centre here. It will become the first
commercial building in Singapore and Asia
to participate in the IL Scheme.

Siemens will supply components
such as smart meters and other
communication equipment. It will also
conduc t site sur veys for equipment
installation, and supervise installations
with engineering services provided by
Diamond Energy. The pilot project is
expected to start in the late third quarter
of this year.

We will implement a Demand
Response pilot programme which will
allow us to optimise power usage during
peak demand periods when necessary, in
exchange for availability payments. This
programme should enable us to provide
significant reductions of energy usage
at The Siemens Centre, said Mr Lothar
Herrmann, CEO, ASEAN-Pacific, Siemens.

Fo l l ow i n g t h e co m p l e t i o n o f
the pilot project, Siemens and Diamond
Energy intend to showcase and present
the technology and solutions under
the pilot project to suitable potential
customers in Singapore, to promote further
implementations.

Our mission at Diamond Energy is
to provide energy management solutions

Rasheed, Chairman of Diamond Energy
Group.

The future of energy is a key
concern globally, especially in terms
of sustainable generation, intelligent
distribution, and efficient consumption,
said Mr Lothar Herrmann, CEO of Siemens Pte
Ltd. Through this pioneering pilot project
with Diamond Energy, Siemens hopes to be
able to present, together with Diamond
Energy, an innovative and efficient smart
energy solution for commercial properties
in Singapore and beyond.

This pilot project is timely, as the
Energy Market Authority (EMA) is reviewing
the implementation of a Demand Response
programme in the National Electricity
Market of Singapore. Siemens and Diamond
Energy believe that this project will provide

a case study on the feasibility of demand

side management operations, which can
be implemented in commercial buildings,
and how the overall efficiency of the energy
market in Singapore can be improved as a
result.

Mr Chee Hong Tat, Chief Executive,
Energy Market Authority of Singapore
said, The EMA is continuously seeking
ways to enable consumers to manage
their electricity consumption and enhance
energy efficiency. One idea we are studying
is the Demand Response initiative, which
has also been implemented in some
overseas jurisdictions. The project between
Siemens and Diamond Energy can serve as
a useful pilot on how businesses can benefit
from demand side management initiatives.
I hope it will encourage more companies
to participate in such activities. n

technology industries all under one roof. Thus,
we are pleased to welcome a total of 256 exhibitors from 22 countries spanning over 15,000 square metres.

As the building stock in Singapore increases and undergoes significant re-building, the need for expertise to maintain and manage
these properties becomes crucial. While it is the responsibility of the facility managers to manage and coordinate the variety of goods and
services the specialist trades have to offer, it is the specialist tradesmen that are ultimately responsible for the execution and end-quality
of these re-building projects, said Mr Nelson Tee, President of Specialists Trade Alliance of Singapore (STAS), Host of iFaME 2013.

Besides an extensive showcase of products and technologies, iFaME also held conferences to provide visitors with the opportunity to
gain new insights on the latest industry trends and developments as well as exchange ideas with one another. The conferences looked into
pivotal topics within the building industry such as Strategic Facilities Management, Sustainability and Workplace Productivity and Safety.

iFaME 2013 also saw the launch of the Building Specialists Trade Handbook by the Specialists Trade Alliance of Singapore. With
this Handbook, STAS aims to propel forward its mission to further develop and improve the standards of professionalism and conduct of
the building trade, especially among suppliers and specialist contractors of the building and construction industry. It would also augment
industry standards, as well as help fellow enterprises grow their businesses while working with government agency counterparts. This
Handbook aims to become an excellent source of specialists trade information and an industry reference for Singapore and the region. The
theme Adopt, Connect, Evolve, or ACE for short, would be embodied in the Handbook as well, said Mr Quah Eng Hing, Chairman STAS
Handbook Project, Sub-Committee.

The 550-pages Handbook will contain case studies with comprehensive illustrations to showcase how the building and construction
industry can adopt the best practices and codes of practice.

iFaME 2013 is supported by the Building & Construction Authority of Singapore (BCA), Asian Intelligent Building Institute (AIIB)
and Singapore Exhibition & Convention Bureau, and hosted by the Specialists Trade Alliance of Singapore (STAS) which is a federation of
10 associations serving the building services industry.

Hong Kong International Building and Decoration Materials & Hardware Fair

Hong Kong The 8th edition of HKTDC Hong Kong International

Building and Decoration Materials & Hardware Fair, will take place
from 28-30 October 2013 at the AsiaWorld-Expo.

Organised by Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the
fair hosted 153 exhibitors from 7 countries and regions such as
China mainland, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, New Zealand
and Taiwan in 2012. Leading companies which participated in the
fair last year included Yuanda China Holdings Ltd and Guangdong
Fortress Chemical Company Ltd.

More than 10,314 buyers from 88 countries and regions
visited the fair in 2012, marking a 20 percent increase over the
2011 attendance. Among the key buyers present at the fair
included renowned names such as Shanghai Construction Group
Co Ltd, Sadoshima Corporation, Bashiti Hardware, Framework
Building Products Pte Ltd, Aliazul S.L, Gammon Construction
Ltd, Henderson Land Development, MTR Corporation Ltd, Sun
Hung Kai Properties Ltd, Sino Group and Swire Properties Ltd.

Since its inception, the Hong Kong International Building
and Decoration Materials & Hardware Fair has become the
primary marketplace that provides product information and
sales opportunities for suppliers and professionals alike.

Po Shing is one of the few fire-rated glass product
manufacturers in Hong Kong that have met the BS EN standards.
We have participated in this fair for the first time to showcase our
production capabilities and to highlight that our products comply
with international standards. We are impressed with strong
responses from many buyers especially those from Hong Kong,
India, Malaysia, Poland and the Chinese mainland, and we are
happy to see that our fire-rated glass products are gaining wider
market acceptance. Some buyers will test our samples according
to their national standards and cooperation opportunities look
promising. We are very satisfied with the exhibition results. Well
definitely participate in this fair again next year, said Sunny Lam,
Managing Director, Po Shing ( Worldwide) Company Limited,
Hong Kong.

TN Corporation has more than 50 years of experience
in producing porcelain and ceramic tiles which can be applied
to exterior and interior walls, swimming pools, bathrooms and
entrances. It is our first-time participation in this fair. We have
32

a sole agent in Hong Kong, so this fair provides a good chance

for us to introduce our products to the Hong Kong market.
Meanwhile, we are looking for new agents for other markets
as well as new buyers at this fair. It is a good fair with so many
buyers not just from Hong Kong but also from overseas countries.
Buyers from Hungary, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan
have expressed interest in doing business with us, said Sunny
Sasanouchi, Marketing Director, TN Corporation, Japan.

Established in 1971, our company is one of the main
contractors for hotels, apartments, factories and hospitals in
Indonesia. Currently, most of the building materials that we are
using come from Europe and the US. I am visiting this fair for
the first time to look for cheaper alternatives that can be offered
by the Chinese mainland. I have already found some potential
suppliers of curtain walls, bamboo flooring, bathroom accessories
and aluminium panels. Ill collect samples and quotations from
these suppliers and propose them to my clients. I have also
identified new business opportunities here as some exhibitors
are looking for agents and distributors, so Ill further discuss with
them after the fair. It has been a rewarding visit, said Daniel W.
Utomo, Director of Business Development, PT. Wijaya Kusuma
Contractors, Indonesia.
Strong construction
In Hong Kong, demand for construction services is high with private
and public sector developments underway or about to begin.
Government emphasis on major infrastructure improvement is
seen in its commitment to the Ten Mega Infrastructure Projects.
Transport infrastructure projects include major works such as
the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link, and the
Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.

Overall gross value of construction work by Hong Kong
companies has been rising since 2009, reaching HK$129 billion
(US$16.75 billion) by end-2011, and reaching a gross value of
US$5 billion in the second half quarter of 2012, a 34 percent
increase over the same period in 2011.

The 2013 Policy Address presented earlier by the Chief
Executive of HKSAR placed very high emphasis on increasing
supply of subsidised housing in Hong Kong. Target total supply
of public housing will be at least 100,000 units over the five years
starting from 2018. The demand for building materials will thus
increase.

As the gateway to the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong also
offers the opportunity for exhibitors to showcase their building
materials and hardware to builders and sub-contractors, as well
as private sector decision makers from the Chinese mainland and
other Asian countries.
Ideal positioning in product zones
The Hong Kong International Building and Decoration Materials &
Hardware Fair will have product zones to put focus on important
emerging trends in the building and construction industry.

Green Globe Certification first for Park Regis Kris Kin brand
Sustainability specialist Farnek Consulting helps Bur Dubai property reach major milestone to gain GGC recognition.
Dubai, UAE The Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel Dubai has been awarded
international Green Globe Certification (GGC), following an in-depth
sustainability audit conducted by Farnek Consulting, GGCs exclusive
partner in the Middle East. The certification marks another milestone
in the success of the 390-room five-star property.

We are truly proud to receive this recognition that reinforces
our commitment to the emirates transition towards a greener
economy, said Scott Butcher, General Manager.

According to Sandrine Le Biavant, Division Manager, Farnek
Consulting, the hotel demonstrated top to bottom commitment to
the certification process, with team members involved at all levels
and across all departments.

From the simplest step of encouraging team members to
switch off computers and office lights when not in use, to the launch
of a dedicated waste separation and recycling programme, the

thought-out environmental plan, she said. Building on its newly

certificated status, the hotel will roll out a number of new carbon
footprint-reducing initiatives in 2013 and has also launched an
internal forum to generate further ideas and proposals, she added.

Concerns regarding the substantial impact of tourism on
the global environmental footprint are driving the hotels green
commitment and Butcher stressed that as a major consumer
of energy and water, the hospitality industry needs to take
sustainability seriously.

Sustainable practice is an essential part of our long term
business strategy, which I firmly believe can be carried out without
compromising on guest comfort, or services. For environmentally
conscious companies and travellers, the green agenda is a key
consideration these days when choosing hotels. People do want to
protect the planet by making responsible choices. Now at the Park
Regis Kris Kin Hotel Dubai they can surely enjoy their stay with a
clear conscience, said Butcher. n

Designed with synthetic adhesive layers combined with a robust HDPE
film, Preprufe provides a permanent physical barrier that will protect each
structure against chloride and sulphate attack. Graces patented Advanced

forming a unique intimate seal to prevent any water migration between the
waterproofing and the structure and substantially reduce the risk of leaks.

No other system on the market protects a substructure from the harmful
effects of water, vapour and gas more effectively than Preprufe. It can be
applied on wet substrates and is immediately trafficable after installation
without protective layers, which makes for fast and easy application. When
compared to traditional loose-laid PVC systems, Preprufe is more than

William Pedersen honoured with 2013 AIANY Medal of Honor

New York, New York, USA International architecture firm Kohn Pedersen
Fox Associates (KPF) announced that William Pedersen, FAIA, FAAR, the firms
founding design partner, was the recipient of the 2013 Medal of Honor by the
New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects during a ceremony at
Cipriani Wall Street in New York City on 17 April 2013.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Pedersen first commented that he would not
be there, accepting the honour, if it werent for his friend and partner, A. Eugene
Kohn, Chairman of KPF. He also thanked his wife of 52 years and the foundation
of his life, Elizabeth. Mr Pedersen went on to tell a story of his first visit to New
York City as a boy, and the foresight his father had to take him to Rockefeller
Center in hopes that his son would one day become an architect. Rockefeller
Center was created by a collaboration of strong and diverse personalities,
each responding to the challenging pressures which are brought to bear on a
complex work of commercial and civic architecture. Together, these individuals
created a remarkably poetic balance of humility and nobility. Their example of
collaboration has inspired me for over 40 years, he said.

Of particular concern to Mr Pedersen has been the development of
what he calls the fundamental building block of the modern city: the highrise
commercial office building. Throughout his career, he has systematically sought
ways for buildings of this seeminglymundane type to gesture and connect
to other participants so that each does not stand mutely in isolation from its
neighbours, but rather joins in an active architectural conversation with them.
He regards his accomplishments in this area of architectural pursuit as his most
substantial accomplishments. Presently, he is at work on Hudson Yards in New
York where his philosophical intentions for commercial buildings are being given
the ultimate test.

Mr Kohn noted the significance of Mr Pedersens commitment to enabling
the successful integration of tall buildings into the surrounding community: William Pedersen. Photo: Kristine Larsen
After Bill and I founded the firm with Shelly Fox in 1976, we sought to find a
way for the tall building to relate to the urban street wall, and to be a participant in the urban context. Our firm remains committed to
that concept and recognises the important role of tall buildings. This prestigious award is one Bill truly deserves and acknowledges his
success in making the tall building a more meaningful participant.

Since the firms inception, it has been Mr Pedersens intention to lead only a segment of the firms designs, thereby allowing
for the parallel development of other design partners and for his continued focus on each project he directs. This aspiration has led to
stimulating competition within the KPF design community and has allowed the firm to expand in capacity and dimension while still
maintaining design quality, particularly necessary since the advent of KPFs global practice. n

Zaha Hadid wins the Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award 2013
London, UK Dame Zaha Hadid has been announced as the winner
of the 41st Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award.

Created in 1972 as a tribute to Madame Clicquot, the Veuve
Clicquot Business Woman Award champions the success of business
women worldwide who share the same qualities as Madame
Clicquot: her enterprising spirit, her courage and the determination
necessary to accomplish her aims. It is the first international award
created specifically to recognise the contribution that women have
made to business life and is now regarded as the Oscar for female
entrepreneurs and business leaders.

Veuve Clicquot owes its extraordinary reputation to a
remarkably modern woman: Madame Clicquot. Married in 1798 to
Franois Clicquot, owner of a Champagne business, and widowed
at 27, she took control of the business and was one of the first
women to lead a company of men. Proud and strong-willed, she
always demanded only one quality, the finest.

Dame Zaha has grown to become one of the most influential
architects in the world. With her firm, Zaha Hadid Architects, she
has designed many of the most renowned buildings around the
globe such as the MAXXI Museum in Rome and the Guangzhou
Opera House in China. Her critically acclaimed works in the UK
include the London Aquatics Centre for the 2012 Olympics and
the Evelyn Grace Academy in Brixton, the Riverside Museum in
Glasgow and the Maggies Centre in Kirkcaldy. As well as shaping
the language of architecture, she has also been a role model for
female businesswomen in male dominated industries.

In 2004 she became the first female recipient of the Pritzker
Architecture Prize, the most prestigious prize in architecture. She
also won the Stirling Prize for two years running for her work in
Rome and London. She was awarded a CBE in 2002, and DBE in the
2012 Birthday Honours for services to architecture.

Alongside this, Dame Zaha has made an extraordinary
commitment to theoretical and academic work. Having taught at
the Architectural Association until 1987, she has held numerous
chairs and guest professorships at universities around the world. She
is currently a professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna
and Visiting Professor of Architectural Design at Yale University.

Dame Zahas commitment to philanthropy was also
recognised by the panel. Through Zaha Hadid Architects, she has
supported a number of charities through auctions and pro bono
work, including Maggies Centre, the NSPCC and Women for Women.
Dame Zaha Hadid, on receiving her award, said: Its hard to believe,

Photography courtesy of Veuve Clicquot

but its still difficult for women to break the business barrier. Through
perseverance and hard work, Ive been able to do so, but its been a
long struggle. When I started my career in architecture it was very
much a male dominated industry, but in recent years Ive seen a
growing number of talented female architects join the profession
and succeed. This Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award shines a
light on our achievements; and I hope it encourages more women
to continue with the profession.

Christina Jesaitis, Senior Brand Manager, Veuve Clicquot
said: Dame Zaha has made her mark across the globe with iconic
works that will inspire people for decades. Not only has she had a
huge impact on the world of architecture as a whole, but she has
demonstrated great zeal as businesswomen, growing Zaha Hadid
Architects successfully, adapting to change and demonstrating
fantastic CSR credentials. She displays the same passion and
determination that Madame Clicquot possessed over 200 years
ago. We are so grateful that Dame Zaha has accepted this award,
and as such, marking a stake in the ground for future generations
of entrepreneurs. n

BAU 2013: A complete success for DORMA

DORMAs stand at BAU 2013 welcomed visitors from 76 countries, with business contact numbers up 20 percent compared to 2011 show.
Ennepetal, Germany BAU 2013
impressively underpinned its reputation
as one of the worlds foremost trade shows
for architecture, materials and systems,
with a rise in international visitor numbers
adding to the kudos. And this increasingly
international mix was also apparent at
the 850 square metres DORMA booth.
In the course of the six days of BAU, the
stand played host to architects, planners,
specifiers, designers, fabricators and
installers from a total of 76 countries.
The influx from abroad contributed to a
rise of 20 percent in recorded business
contacts, as compared to DORMAs figures
for BAU 2011.

The booths allure derived not
only from its impressive t wo -storey
architecture, but also from the DORMA
Forum at which guest speakers of renown
offered a range of presentations with
titles such as The Future of Architecture,
Barrier-free Access in Architecture, and
Building Information Modeling.

While the bare figures offer some
indication of the interest levels generated,
it was the positive resonance among the
trade visitors to the display mix and the
system suppliers new brand identity that
was the real sensation. If youre appearing
at BAU, you really do have to put your best
foot forward. And I think that, with our new
brand identity and our exhibition stand, we
were eminently successful on that score.
Many of our visitors were impressed by the
consistency and creativity with which we
are able to bring the DORMA brand to life,
said Mario Dreismann, VP Group Marketing

and Sales of the DORMA Group.

In keeping with DORMAs show
motto, From Today to Tomorrow, the
upper floor of its booth was entirely
given over to designs and product studies
aligned to the future. And these attracted
huge interest. Quite justifiably, our
customers expect us as a premium provider
to offer viable concepts for the access
solutions of tomorrow. Not for nothing is
Innovation one of our five brand values,
and its one that we intend to live up to in
the years to come, assured DORMA Group
CEO, Thomas P. Wagner.

for the product groups Door Closers, Swing
Door Operators, Sliding Door Operators
and Movable Walls. Further proof positive,
then, of DORMAs success in consolidating
its claim as the trusted global partner for
premium access solutions and services
enabling better buildings. n

The access concepts of the future that were on display here included a
revolving door with an extremely flat, noiseless direct-drive operator (no
gearbox) that affords architects and specifiers new options with respect
to design and installation. The low-profile operator system likewise
enables elegant ceiling constructions, making complicated ground work
for installing an underfloor operator a thing of the past. Photo: DORMA

Avire chooses Dewhurst as Hong Kong distributor

Amersham, Bucks UK Leading provider of lift safety and communication systems
Avire has chosen Dewhurst as its supplier in Hong Kong and Macau.

Dewhurst has manufactured quality lift components for over 90 years
and will now supply light curtains from Avires Memco and TL Jones brands.

We are very excited about this partnership, said Eric Fung, Dewhursts
general manager. We feel that a market like Hong Kong, where there are many
prestigious buildings, will welcome state-of-the-art equipment. When it comes
to light curtains, Memco leads the way with the Panachrome range.

Andy Harbidge, Avires sales & marketing director, added: We look forward
to working with Dewhurst to develop the Hong Kong market. They were a logical
and easy choice of supplier, given our current distribution relationships with
them in the UK and Australia.

Dewhurst is probably best known for its high-quality push-button products, Dewhursts general manager Eric Fung in front of the

often sold under the Dupar brand. With its office and warehouse located in central
Kowloon, the company can easily supply goods to all of Hong Kongs lift companies. n

Phoenix Solars Singapore subsidiary is engineering solar power plants in Thailand with a peak power
totalling 36 megawatts
Sulzemoos, Germany Solarco Co Ltd signed a contract on 12 April 2013 with a banking consortium to finance the construction of solar
power plants in Thailand totalling 72 Megawatt peak (MWp). Phoenix Solar Pte Ltd, the Singapore-based subsidiary of Phoenix Solar AG
won the contract to design 36MWp of these power plants including the supply of solar modules, inverters and cables. The construction
work for this large project has already begun, and Phoenix Solars fulfilment of the conditions precedent to offshore financing now
provides the necessary financial security to complete the project.

The financing consortium comprises the Asian Development Bank, Kasikorn Bank and Bangkok Bank.

Solarco Co. Ltd is a joint venture between Yanhee Solar Power Company Limited (Yanhee) and Electricity Generating Public
Company Limited (EGCO). The JV is led by EGCO, an energy utility listed on Bangkoks stock exchange and Thailands first independent
power producer (IPP). EGCO currently owns and operates over 64MWac of solar projects, and plans to expand its renewable energy
portfolio to 300MWac by 2015. Yanhee is also an experienced solar power plant developer. It owns the majority stake in an SPV where
Phoenix Solar and local partner Process Engineering Services Co. Ltd (PESCO), designed and constructed two solar power plants totalling
16MWp. The projects were connected to Thailands grid in August 2012.

Phoenix Solar Singapore is again collaborating closely on this major project with PESCO, a Thai company with over 27 years of
experience in the M&E sector. Phoenix Solar is responsible for planning the three power plants and for delivering solar modules, inverters
and cables, while PESCO supplies the substructure and AC components, and carries out the building activities on site.

The contractual scope comprises the turnkey design, engineering, planning, procurement and the construction of three solar
power plants of 12MWp each in the provinces of Suphanburi and Nakhonpathom. Upon completion, around 144,000 crystalline REC
Solar solar modules and 36 SMA central inverters will generate approximately 56,000 megawatt hours of solar electricity per year. This
is enough clean electricity to supply some 23,000 Thai households.

Mr Pongsapat Theppratuangthip, Senior Vice President Domestic Business Development at EGCO commented, We needed to
rely on an experienced team for this project. Both Phoenix Solar and PESCO enjoy an excellent reputation here in Thailand, blending a
solid combination of international design and engineering expertise with local construction and management know-how.

It is rewarding to see the confidence of investors and lenders in the Phoenix-PESCO team to develop durable and high performance
solar power plants, said Christophe Inglin, Managing Director of Phoenix Solar Pte Ltd.

A major focus of our operations is currently on the strong growth regions in Asia and the US, said Dr. Bernd Khler, Chief Executive
Officer of the parent company Phoenix Solar AG. The Solarco project is testament to the strategic direction we have taken and lays an
important foundation for our further growth in this market. n
