From the
Editor
While each issue of Contemporary Stone & Tile Design has something fresh to offer, I always nd
our summer issue to be particularly fun to put together. For as long as I can remember, this issue
has always been dedicated to decorative and glass tile. I nd it appropriately tting, since the
summer months are usually associated with bright colors and a sense of being carefree.
As we prepare this focus each year, I discover tiles with more texture, depth and reective
qualities. The advances in technology are truly staggering. It is amazing to consider all of the
options that are out there now. Way back when, I used to only think of mosaics when it came
to glass tile. Today, glass tiles are coming in an assortment of shapes and sizes. There are ones
that are made to look like bubbles, hexagons, etc.
One of my recent discoveries is Modono Glass Tile that is featured on our cover and in an article that begins on page 24. These tiles have a very reective quality, which makes them change
color as daylight hits their surface. I also nd it interesting that large-format pieces were used as
accents on the exterior of a commercial building. The tiles ranged in size from 12 x 12 to 12 x 24
inches something I dont think is commonly seen for this type of application.
In addition to the features that illustrate some nished projects using decorative and glass tile,
we have also included a roundup of these products on page 34 of this issue. I hope you enjoy
checking them out as much as I have. Additionally, even more new stone and tile products can
be found in our Coverings 2011 Product Review starting on page 14.
Coverings was just one of several stone and tile exhibitions that I had the opportunity to visit
in recent months. Now that I have been back in the ofce for a while, I have had time to reect
on some other observations I made while on the road, and I feel they are also worth sharing.
The use of social media by industry members for business purposes is denitely on a signicant
incline. Many of the Web sites from industry companies, associations and trade shows as well
as brochures and press releases are promoting Facebook pages or asking readers to follow
them on Twitter. Seminars explaining how social media can bene t a business are now also part
of the lineup of the educational programs that are held in conjunction with trade exhibitions.
I have to admit that I had been lagging behind a bit when it comes to our magazines Facebook
page and Twitter account. But after returning from Coverings a few months ago, I started thinking of the ways that Facebook and Twitter could bene t the Contemporary Stone & Tile Design
brand and there are denitely a few. Social media provides another platform to get the word
out about whatever might be of importance at the time. As a magazine, it allows me to let
our readers know about upcoming industry events or to share up-to-the-minute happenings
at these events. They also are another way to share industry news and new product launches.
Social media seems to be here to stay, and no matter what your business, it might be worth
exploring ways that it can bene t your operation and help communicate your message and
mission. I want to let our readers know that I am diligently posting the latest news and other
topics, images and videos pertaining to the stone and tile industry on Contemporary Stone &
Tile Designs Facebook page, which we share with our sister publication Stone World at:
www.facebook.com/stonetilepage, and you can also follow us on Twitter (@cstdmag). Additionally, you can see a unique collection of stone industry videos on YouTube by visiting

Feel free to visit our social media pages, and dont hesitate to share your comments, feedback
and ideas with us.

Scholarships Available To Architects For The Next Veronafiere AIA-Approved Continuing Education Course

Designing with Natural Stone

The thirteenth edition of Designing with Natural Stone will
run from September 19-24, 2011 in Verona, Italy, in conjunction
with MARMOMACC, the worlds leading trade show for stone
and design. Nearly 200 architects from all over the U.S. have
participated in previous editions of the course. Scholarship
applications for this years course will be accepted until July 15th.
Veronaere offers this course to help architects learn advanced
techniques in the use of marble, granite and other stone materials.
The program is a unique combination of classroom lectures,
guided architectural tours, and eld trips to local quarries, as
well as to natural stone processing facilities. This comprehensive
approach enables architects to better understand stones full
life-cycle including how marble is quarried, cut, processed,
nished, selected for specic jobs and installed, all using the latest

technologies and products. Members of the stone trade wishing to

better educate the architects they work with about stone design
should suggest they apply.
The 2011 edition will include visits to a Chiampo quarry and
a nearby stone processing plant, case studies on the Canadian
Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg and the M Resort in
LasVegas, as well as architectural tours of Verona and Vicenza.
Sustainable design (SD) became a principal focus of the course in
2008. A minimum of four AIA SD credits will again be offered,
including a session on stone maintenance and case studies of
sustainable projects in stone. In addition, the course provides time
to explore MARMOMACC, with its more than 1,500 exhibitors
of stone and stone-related products from around the world.

Designing with Natural Stone has been recognized by the AIA as a Best Practices and Trends educational program.
Comments from last years students support this judgment:
The program was great for me, just what I needed. I love the craft of building and there is no better material to express
a sense of permanence with than natural stone.
Earl Jackson, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (New York, NY)
The sequencing, from the quarried blocks to nished pieces; sealing, installing, treating, restoring, etc., helped to make
each subject more interesting and relevant. I am comfortable sharing the experience and knowledge gained with others,
and the resources made available can be shared as well.
Jon Bernhard, Swaback Partners (Scottsdale, AZ)
I really cannot think of anything to change. This was such a positive experience and I would recommend it to any
designerI now know how to talk about stone, and to understand the issues related to stoneThank you for the
opportunity to gain this knowledge.
Peter Birkholz, Page & Turnbull (San Francisco, CA)
Participants earn approximately 23 AIA/CES learning-unit
hours. Many classes also count as HSW credits and four as SD
credits. The class is limited to 30 architects, 16 from the U.S., the
others from Canada, the U.K., South Africa, India, Singapore,
and Hungary.
Scholarships covering tuition, hotels and meals are awarded on
a competitive basis, based on a candidates demonstrated interest
in the eld, responsibilities within their rm, and experience with
stone. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to
Verona as well as a $480 registration fee. Those interested should

fax or e-mail to the address below their curriculum vitae and a

cover letter specifying why they wish to take part in the course.
The deadline for submitting applications is July 15th.
The course is co-sponsored by Stone World magazine and supported
by the Marble Institute of America, which donates a copy of its
MIA Dimension Stone Design Manual to all participants.

K. The growing trend toward very large, very thin, vertical tile
installations is easily accomplished with lightweight, non-sag,
medium-bed Ultralite Mortar from Mapei. At half the weight
of standard tile, easy-to-handle, low-profile tile perfectly complements back-friendly Ultralite Mortar. Packaged in 25-pound
(11.3-kg) bags, Ultralite Mortar provides the same great coverage as standard 50-pound (22.7-kg) bags, saving installers in
costly time, labor and transportation. This polymer-rich mortar
utilizes Mapeis Easy Glide Technology, which makes spreading
easy without sacrificing the ability to hold ridges. With 30% recycled content, Ultralite Mortar helps contribute valuable points
toward LEED-certified projects, reports Mapei.
www.mapei.com
L. The American Naturals collection of glazed porcelain tile
replicates the look of hardwood and is produced with Dynamic
HD Imaging exclusive from Mediterranea. Made in the USA
with 36 percent recycled content, American Naturals glazed

M. Grout Shield from Miracle Sealants Co. is a specialty

sealer additive that mixes with cement-based grout instead of
water to provide a stain-resistant grout installation without any
additional sealing. It is perfect for interior and exterior use, according to its manufacturer. Additionally, Grout Shield protects
sanded grout from staining, mixes with sanded grout in place of
water, comes with a 20-year warranty and makes grout stronger.
Anti-microbial a fungistatic agent has been incorporated into

by mildew, reports Miracle Sealants Co.
www.miraclesealants.com

a low-consumption, technologically innovative production process to create a sustainable, environmentally friendly product.
The sintered glass tiles are obtained by grinding and compressing waste glass and recycling glass-based products, according to
the manufacturer. This regeneration process creates a material

T. Wizard Enterprise introduced Hawthorne, a handmade tile
line with 40% recycled content. Inspired by glazed French terracotta, Hawthorne embodies a blend of rustic warmth and modern
practicality. Rich mottled glazes and irregular surfaces make Hawthorne installations soothing rhythmic textures. Glazes meld and
interact with the clay, letting its character come through to create
attractive and original glaze surfaces. With the high recycled content in the Hawthorne product line and Wizard Enterprises green
production practices, this tile line will qualify for LEED Credits, reports the manufacturer. The new collection is offered in five stock

Mosaic glass
tile rejuvenates
master bath
Iridescent glass mosaics contribute to the refreshing
and open airy feel of a renovated master bath of a
private residence in Texas
by Kelly Martin

n transforming the design of a Texas home

from one century to another, Winn Wittman,
AIA, of Winn Wittman Architecture in Austin,
TX, chose to incorporate mosaic glass tile into
the design of his clients master bath. The ultimate design goal of this project was to fulfill the
homeowners vision, which directly reflected his
passion for individual expression.
In addition to reflecting his clients personality in
the space, Wittman also was determined to create a very functional bathroom. He wanted to
bring a sense of order to a room that originally
had a very fragmented layout.

20

A focal point of the master bath design is shimmering mosaic tiles that clad the shower walls
and accent a large picture window. The - x
-inch iridescent green glass mosaics were
manufactured by Hakatai Enterprises, Inc. of
Ashland, OR.
The glass tile is a durable and attractive surface, and the strong color was appealing, said
the architect. We also enjoyed the iridescent
shimmer to the solid glass tile.

the architect and builder Gary Robinson of Home as Art in Austin, TX also
looked at some products with a greater
scale. The larger glass tiles we looked at
were nice, but they definitely were not
as rich looking and they were even
actually pricier than this particular product, said Wittman.
Careful consideration was also given to
the installation of the glass mosaics
especially given the fact that they are
in the shower. When using glass tiles
like the ones we selected, you have to
make sure you are using the correct adhesive and making sure that you do not
have any bleed-through from the water
proofing that you have applied to the
walls, said Robinson.
Further contributing to the overall ambiance of the master bath are beigecolored stone floor tiles that feature
some darker spots adding character
to the floor design. Additionally, the vanity tops were fabricated from a variety of
CaesarStone quartz surfacing, which is
made with recycled glass content.
According to both the architect and

builder, the 400-square-foot master

bath proved to be challenging with regard to the tile work. The most challenging aspect was the shower floor,
which needs to slope to drain, and also
needs to be slip-resistant and match
the flooring in the main area, said
Wittman. We accomplished this by
cutting the flooring pieces into smaller
pieces and honing them with sandpaper to achieve a non-slip surface. The
smaller pieces follow the curvature of
the shower pan.

21

The entire house renovation, including

the master bath took approximately a
year and a half to finish, and it has received several design awards. We have
gratefully been featured in over two
dozen national and international publications, said Wittman.
I dont think we realized that we
would receive so much publicity from
one house, said Robinson. It is truly
off the charts. Its the character of the
owner. Q

Modernizing an
ancient art form
A handcrafted mosaic backsplash creates a point of
interest for an elegant residential kitchen in Connecticut

have the ability to add a splash of pizzazz
and personal touch to an interior design. They
are ideal for creating a focal point or a touch
of artistry in a living space, such as the kitchen of a private residence in Connecticut. The
backsplash, which was designed by Sara Baldwin, owner of New Ravenna in Exmore, VA, is
an elegantly handcrafted piece that harmonizes
well with the stone countertops, cabinetry and
other architectural details in the kitchen.
Featured in the backsplash design are Acanthus
leaves, which have been used extensively in
ancient Greek and Italian art and architecture,
and have been said to represent long life. The
leaves are completely classic, said Baldwin.
They are featured prominently in some of the
oldest mosaics that exist.

22

The artist explained that she borrowed the

Acanthus leave motif and combined it with floral elements of summer to create a one-of-kind
design, which has been named Tamsin. Backsplashes are all about romance and seduction,
she said. The exciting thing about them is that
they can make such an impact.
Baldwin went on to explain that the Tamsin
design originally appeared as a floor medallion.
The beauty of this design is that it can be expanded or contracted to virtually any size piece,
she said. Because it is organic, we can make it
bigger or smaller. It can even become a skinny
border under a window.
Each design such as that used for the backsplash is made to measure and designed for
that particular space, according to Baldwin. We

then make the mosaics, she explained.
The client can choose the colors. We
do a custom color rendering so they can
see what the design will look like.
The custom mosaic backsplash as
well as all of New Ravennas products
are crafted by hand. We import
marble from all over the world and cut
it here in Virginia, said Baldwin. Then,
we have artisans nip the marble pieces
to size and place them on top of the
pattern some of our employees are
fabulous at blending, so the leaves look
as realistic as possible. Finally, we tapeface the mosaic, cut it into interlocking
sections like a puzzle, and ship them to
your door. Q

Playful tilework
enlivens light-rail
station
A collaboration between a local community and team of artists
brings life to the DART North Carrollton Frankford Road Station
in Dallas, TX, with the use of custom-cut ceramic tile
by Jennifer Adams

t is evident that careful thought and planning

are given to the design of each station along
the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) light-rail
system. In particular, the newly designed North
Carrollton Frankford Road stop is a vision of
color and whimsy. Artists Larry Enge and Charlotte Lindsey of Montage 48/61 created a vivid
and playful design with custom-cut tile from
Waterjet Works of Dallas, TX.
It was a great process, said Enge. DART has
been working with artists for 15 years. Their goal

30

has been for each station to have its own uniqueness and appearance. They also want each one
to tie to the community somehow.
Enge went on to explain that DART took
time to select the artists as well as a group
of community volunteers to participate in the
project. Once we were selected as artists,
there were several meetings, he said. We
talked with and listened to the community to
find out what they wanted people to experience when they came to the station.

Although many of the DART stations

are positioned in areas surrounded by
historic communities, the Frankford area
has been mostly warehouses with very
little community history, according to
Enge. It is mostly new development,
he said. Many of the warehouses are
still there while the neighborhoods that
have developed are mainly composed of
young professionals. We decided that it
would be good to have something fun.
[Also], this DART station is both at the

end of the line and the beginning of the

line from Denton side to the north, so
they wanted a celebratory gateway at
this station.
Additionally, the land acquired for the
DART station was tucked between two
large warehouses. Our challenge was
to make it inviting and dispel any anxiety people may have about going down
between the buildings, said Enge. We
worked with the architects very closely.

31

There were certain standard station

fixtures that were available for artistic
modification. As we worked in partnership with the architectural/engineering
team for DART, our job was to come up
with a design for the designated fixtures,
and they provide the expertise in figuring out how to execute our design.
We were responsible for driving the
design, the artist went on to say. We
were using input from the community,

Inspiration for the design came from the work of

Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser as
well as input from the local community.

Once the artists had created the design

ramp, they worked closely with Waterjet
Works to custom-cut the tiles.

but DART wanted it to be our artistic

design. The architects were there to assist us. They let us know the design parameters for the station what was
possible and what was not.
According to Enge, inspiration for the
design, which took about two years to
bring to fruition, came from the works
of Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who his partner, Charlotte
Lindsey, happened to have been studying at the time. He has very whimsical

32

designs, said Enge. We designed
the columns at the station with

rest of the design spun off of that.

designs, he said. Taking a cue from the

works of Hundertwasser, we designed
the columns at the station with bulbous
shapes reminiscent of pottery and very
colorful ceramic tile. The rest of the design spun off of that.
In addition to the colorful mosaic columns, a wheel chair access ramp wall
also provided a canvas for some creative
artwork. The artists developed a festive
design fabricated in ceramic tile that was
custom-cut by Waterjet Works and supplied by Daltile Corp. of Dallas, TX.
Although there were elevation plans with
all the measurements, the artists found it
necessary to wait until the wall was successfully built to get measurements accurate enough for waterjet fabrication.
Enge went on to say that the customer
service and experience provided by the
waterjet fabricator helped tremendously
in this part of the process. Working
with Waterjet Works was the smoothest part of the fabrication/installation
for the project, he said. Their attitude
showed that they really care about the
creative process. Philip [Einsohn, company owner] offered suggestions that were
helpful to me. It was obvious that his intentions were to do whatever he could
to make the project successful.

According to Einsohn, Waterjet Works

has been involved in the design community since 1999. Working with artists is a wonderful experience, he said.
It has given us great insight into the
needs of architects, interior designers and artists. We are a very detailed
business, as are they. We speak their
language, and that has helped us to succeed in numerous artistic endeavors
over the years and across the U.S., such
as at the DART Frankford Station.

33

Einsohn went on to explain that he and

his staff will work closely with artists such
as Enge and Lindsey to make certain a
project is a success. They have found a
partner in the process that will take their
creativity and turn it into sustainable, durable art, he said. Public art is a great
format for the collaboration between
Waterjet Works and the artistic community. Charlotte and Larry were wonderful
to work with. The installation was completed at the end of 2010. Q

Hawaii is an example of modern architecture
that reflects its natural habitat. Tucked between
volcanic mountain ranges to the east and ocean

luxury and takes advantage of its priceless views.
Contributing to the overall ambiance of the design is a palette of Italian tile combined with
Chinese lava rock and reclaimed Teak timber
making for a unique and stunning aesthetic.
The program is arranged as a series of pods
distributed throughout the property each

The pods are programmatically assigned as

connecting the two pods along a central axis.
The residential exterior is comprised of the
reclaimed Teak timber taken from old
barns and train tracks coupled with stacked
and cut lava rock. The two materials form a
historically driven medium embedded in Hawaiian tradition, explained Gartin. Local basket-weaving culture was the inspiration for the
entry pavilion, which reenacts the traditional
gift upon arrival ceremony. Various digitally
sculpted wood ceilings and screens throughout the house continue the abstract approach
to traditional Hawaiian wood carving, further
infusing traditional elements into the contemporary arrangement.

A statement of
modern elegance

For the master bath of an upscale San Francisco, CA home, the design uses an
innovative application of Carrara marble to create a visual centerpiece for the space
by Jennifer Adams

hen it came time to furnish the master bath

of a newly constructed 5,000-square-foot
home in the Upper Noe Valley neighborhood
of San Francisco, CA, it was important that the
materials were reflective of the high-quality residential design. After careful review, owner John
Schrader of Nova Designs + Builds chose thin
strips of Carrara marble with varying splitface

and smooth surface finishes manufactured

by Voguebay of San Leandro, CA, and supplied
by Galleria Tile of San Francisco to achieve a
luxurious bathroom retreat.
It is an extremely large bathroom with a lot of
windows with mirrors facing them, said Schrader. We had a lot of visual complexity going on

in the room with those elements already.

This was the hardest room in the house
to deal with.
I wanted to do a completely covered
wall look in tile or stone since it is a
high-end home, but I also wanted it to
feel calm and inviting, Schrader went

on to say. I kept looking for material

that would be interesting visually. I was
looking to break up the large walls
with texture instead of different materials. I literally searched the market
for months.
Another challenge of the 300-square-

45

foot master bath design was that the

material needed to complement a large,
round, cement, soaking tub. Its a spectacular piece, but it didnt lend itself to
matching.
Schraders search led him to Carrara

used Voguebay glass tiles several times
before, but I really liked the look of the

are always looking for ways to be innovative and do something different.

In total, the entire house was built in

seven months. Everything in the master bath came together, and it became a
visual centerpiece, said Schrader. The
tile helped subdued the tub, and it also
helped that we kept everything monochromatic. Q

Tile and stone

enhance campus
parking structure
The use of terra-cotta tile and local Duke Stone for the exterior
design of a new parking garage at Duke University maintains campus
tradition while adding a modern twist
by Kelly Martin

uke Universitys recently completed 1,900car parking garage has become the first
freestanding parking structure in the U.S.
to achieve LEED certification. Bill Browne, FAIA,
LEED AP, Principal and President of RATIO Architects Inc. in Indianapolis, IN, led the architectural team, and Todd Lohman of Walker
Parking Consultants, Inc. led the overall project team. Collaborating together, the two
firms opted to incorporate natural stone and
tile throughout the structure.
The design goal certainly was to build a garage
that was centrally located to the campus that
could serve a number of research medical facilities in the area, said the architect. With that,

48

the University wanted this garage to pursue

LEED certification. Duke is a strong proponent
of LEED-certified buildings, and this is now the
first freestanding, single-use LEED-certified garage in the U.S.
In building the structure, Browne knew he
wanted to employ natural stone and tile in
the design from the start. As a result, the
design team chose terra-cotta tile, architectural pre-cast concrete panels and traditional
Duke Stone for the parking garages exterior
design. These materials give the facade a variety of textures and colors and visually
reduce the scale of the building, according to
the architect.

We wanted to use Duke Stone throughout the garage, but

soon realized the implications of that, so we decided to use
it as entrance and accent points, said Bill Browne, Principal
and President of RATIO Architects. Complemented by the
terra-cotta tiles, it gave us the aesthetic quality we were
looking for in the building.

Because Duke University owns a local quarry, the Duke Stone was
easy to access. However, it is not an easy material to quarry, as it
comes in smaller pieces rather than blocks. Duke Stone is relatively
pervasive on many of the Universitys older buildings on campus,
said Browne. We understood the context of the campus, and we
were really taken by the Duke Stone because it is quite beautiful.
We wanted to use the material throughout the garage, but soon
realized the implications of that, so we decided to use it at entrance
and accent points. Complemented by the terra-cotta tiles, it gave us

Browne went on to explain that the terra-cotta tile, manufactured
by Terreal of New Brunswick, OH, and supplied by Ludowici of
New Lexington, OH, was chosen for its beautiful array of tile colors.
The 12- x 12-inch terra-cotta tile was developed in the same color
range as the Duke Stone allowing us to cover larger areas of the

building, said the architect. The wonderful array of tile colors brings the earth
tones of the Duke Stone out on the rest
of the building as a modern treatment.

The selection process

In specifying a color range for the project, RATIOs architectural team first
identified the terra-cotta material, and
then decided on the colors they wanted
to pursue in the mock-ups to get the coloration and model desired for the project. We chose to incorporate neutral
earth tones and off-white colors, said
Browne. Theres nothing like seeing the
material first before we use it.

According to Browne, Duke University

was quite involved in the selection process of the materials. We worked very
closely with the University, specifically
the facilities department and the architects on campus, said Browne. The
University has an environmental committee that reviews all of their projects,
so we presented the design to them for
review and approval.
Browne noted that one important aspect of this project was to get the University comfortable with the use of the
terra-cotta tile since it was the first
use of this material on campus. We

50

needed to convince them that this was

a timeless, low-maintenance material
that would be able to stand the test
of time, which any university building
needs to do.
Completed in January 2010, the reaction
to this new 700,000-square-foot parking
garage was extremely positive. I understand that the University is very pleased
with the result, said Browne. Duke
University is now designing a new clinic
building across the street. The architects
on that project have reviewed the garages drawings, as they want their new
building to complement our building. Q
