MICROWAVE A MUST FOR A NATION THAT’S 99% WATER

When visitors vacation on any of the Maldives’ beautiful beaches and atolls, they will
have access to one of the world’s most advanced 3G networks. Wataniya Telecom
Maldives’ mission has been to provide the most innovative communication products
and services to residents and visitors alike, including mobile video and Internet.

In early 2009, the timing was right to leap ahead to provide the latest 3G+ services on
its nationwide network. Wataniya Telecom Maldives, known as Wataniya Maldives, in
partnership with Aviat Networks, overhauled its atoll-hopping communication
network with TRuepoint 6500 radios to create a state-of-the art, wireless backbone
for 3G and broadband leased services.

Aviat designed a network to cover the most populous atolls spread north to south
across 820 kilometers of Indian Ocean, which makes up 99 percent of the territory of
the Maldives. Significant water expanses—the longest at 50 kilometers—could only
be covered by microwave radios. Redundant equipment and protected links were
necessary to meet the tough network reliability requirements. In the end, the
network overhaul used 26 separate microwave links with end-to-end network
management. Today, visitors and residents alike can enjoy the beautiful sunsets and
stunning fish and coral reefs even more with 3G services.

With over 700,000 visitors annually—a majority European—the Maldives visitors get colorful
sunsets, pristine beaches and full 3G mobile broadband Internet enabled by TRuepoint 6500.

KEY REQUIREMENT: FULL OPERATION EVEN IN TYPHOONS

To upgrade Wataniya’s network to support full 3G services and mobile broadband
Internet, a complete overhaul of its national backhaul network was planned. This
overhaul would support the operator’s plans to launch new lease-line services to
local businesses. A key requirement was that the network should continue to carry
traffic throughout the network commissioning and cutover to the new microwave
backbone. Network downtime and service disruptions were not acceptable.

Because of the atoll-hopping structure of the backbone network, Aviat network

designers had to address long-hop, microwave transmissions over tidal waters.
More importantly, the network had to have high resiliency because the Maldives are
located in the Indian Ocean typhoon zone, subject to storms from May to October.

TYPHOON-RESILIENT NETWORK
Aviat network engineers selected the TRuepoint 6500 in the 3+1 STM-1 configuration
to be deployed in a backbone ring. Using this configuration, the new backbone has:
