LANGUAGE ARTS

Writing: Students will consolidate what they have learned about the writing process.
This includes the writing cycle and the traits of good writing. They will write both fiction
and non-fiction pieces that reflect their own interests, strengths and abilities. Students
will continue to share their own written pieces as well as respond to the writing of
others.
Word Study: Students will continue to focus on patterns and rules of conventional
spelling. At this stage of the year the children will begin or continue to transition from
inventive spelling to conventional spelling of words that they use frequently and apply
some of the patterns of spelling that have been taught through word study
investigations.
Reading: Students will synthesize all the strategies that they have learned about
becoming strong readers. They will be encouraged to read books that are of great
interest to them. Students will reflect on their reading achievements and make future
plans for themselves as readers.
Handwriting: Students should be using New South Wales script in all of their writing
at this point. Daily practice will continue to take place during class time throughout the
day.

MATH

May sees the introduction of our final unit, Sorting, Comparing and Ordering. Children will
learn how to tell time to the hour and half hour. They will measure the length, height and
width of objects using non-standard measurements, to develop an understanding of linear
measurement. The will use comparative language to compare objects. To complete the
year, progress on the end of year expectations will take place and this data will be used to
review, support and extend learning.

SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE

Our final unit for the year is I was, I am, I will be and this is an introduction to
history. We will reflect upon special memories of who we were in the past, who we are in
Grade One and who we will become when we grow up. We will also look at how tools and
techniques have changed over time. We are asking and discussing the many answers to
these essential questions: (1) How do we become who we are? (2) How do we know
about the past (3) In what ways was our parents childhood different from our own?

PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Thank you to parents for all of your support throughout the year. Thank you also for
helping your children as you talk about special memories from your past.
