    oneexample.Itshouldcomeasnosurprisethatthereareterroristsand,ingeneral,criminalswhowishtoharminnocentpeopleandtargetinfrastructure,andtheDepartment
    hasaresponsibilityanddutytodowhatitcantoidentifyandpreventpotentialcriminalactivity,ifpossiblebeforeithappens.ThisincludestheCapitolcomplex,whichhas
    thousandsofvisitorsaweek,includingmanyschoolchildren.

    TrapWiredoesnotperformsurveillance,thesystemdoesnothavecameras,anditdoesnottargetindividualsorgroups.AnythingthatgoesintoTrapWirehastobeentered
    manuallybyDPS.Whatitdoesdoisanalyzedataafteritisenteredintothesystemandlookforpatterns.TrapWireusesexistingDPSresources,suchasiWatch.(Seethispress

    Atitscore,itisusedtoanalyzesuspiciousactivityreportsoractivitytodetermineapotentialtietoterrorismorcriminalactivitybydetectingpotentialthreatpatterns,whichin
    turncanbeusedforcriminalinvestigationsortoadjustsecuritytomitigatefuturerisks.Forexample,DPSreceivestipsfromavarietyofsources,includinglawenforcement,
    theprivatesectorandthepublic(whichpotentiallycouldincludethemedia).ItalsohelpsidentifypatternsthatmightsuggestpresurveillanceofDPSfacilities.And,ittiesinto
    datafromotherusersontheTrapWiresystem.
