Report to the AEWG

Anders Minken

Report from FIM Ride Green Eco Enduro, Copenhagen, Denmark 11 -13 december 2009 1
BACKGROUND & ORGANISATION

The initiative to this very successful event was taken by two Danish
enthusiasts for motorsport and environmental matters:

•Ivan Reedtz-Thott, former Dakar Quad participant

•Søren Clauding, motorsports journalist

The idea was to organise a race with electrical off-road bikes to prove that
the electrical bike in a race was not an idealistic green dream, but a
possible reality today. They wanted it to be held in and around
Copenhagen at the very same time as the Climate Conference COP 15 was
held to have maximum attention drawn to the race. DMU embraced the idea and gave it’s full
support, followed by the Suisse factory Quantya and FIM. For FIM and the alternative energy
efforts this proved to be a golden opportunity to have another stepstone towards the practical
application of the green possibilities. I was trusted to be representing the AEWG on this
occasion, followed by the two coordinators Christian Mercier and Alex Goldenberg and
UEM’s Sporting Council chairman Mr. Ted Bartlet.

This was a 3 days race. The two first days took place 10-15 km outside of Copenhagen, partly
at Ivan Reedtz-Thott’s estate Feddet, and partly near the famous geological site Møns Klint -
The white Cliffs of Møn. With the paddock and headquarter located at this big farm, using the
buildings and the nice restaurant at the camping site on the estate, the riders and their teams
had every possible facility right at their hands. The third day, Sunday, the whole event was
moved to central Copenhagen, using the military quarters of Svanemøllen, to be accessible to
the public and close to the COP15.

QUANTYA AND THE BIKES

The Quantya Team

The NMF Bike

The Lugano based company Quantya attended the event with 6 employees, in charge of all the
servicing of the bikes - repair, charging, change of batteries, washing - both hired and private
owned. They did a fantastic job. All bikes were of the same mark except for one private owned
Zero bike. For this competition the participants were offered to buy Quantya bikes at a
reduced price, and DMU, NMF, SVEMO and KNMV had purchased bikes, along with some
of the riders.

The bikes were of the type Track Evo 1, with some supplementary accessories to make them
race ready. Using a booster handle on the handlebar, they have a top speed of app. 70 km/h.
The standard engine is 12 kW / 31.5 Nm. The battery is Lithium Potassium (LiPo), 48V giving
a range of app. 45 minutes. These bikes had been tuned by Pico Amps for even better
performance. The organisers had a truck equipped for transportation and charging of the
bikes, and this way it was no problem moving the whole event from one venue to the other to
have different stages for the enduro. The charging was powered by an aggregate mounted in
the truck, driven by biodiesel.

All the riders reported that they had great fun riding these bikes. The limited range was of
course an issue, giving the riders the added tactical challenge of smooth riding and holding
back so that the batteries did not go flat during a stage. The course has to be adapted to the
bike’s characteristics, but when that is the case, it will be a fair fight, challenging the rides
technical skills.

THE PARTICIPANTS

The FIM Ride Green Eco Enduro attracted a lot of interest

from riders. The entry list counted 38 riders, many of whom
is well merited an well known riders from different
disciplines like cross country rally, enduro, motocross,
roadracing and even track racing. Among them were 5
times MX World Champion Joel Smets, Cross Country
Rally World Champion Pål Anders Ullevålseter, many top
Dakar riders, Danish MX star Brian Kjær Jørgensen. Four
of the riders were women, competing in a separate class as
well as with the men. Among them was Annie Seel from
Sweden, Cross country Women’s World Cup winner.

Of course most of the riders attended this event because

they wanted to contribute to creating a cleaner motorsport
future. But in the end all of them enthusiastically expressed
that this was motorsport for real, and that they were amazed
to learn that the future was already within reach. I am
impressed and happy for the open-mindedness of these
riders to new challenges, young and old, famous and
unknown alike.

PUBLICITY

Due to the perfect timing of this event - simultaneously organised with the COP15 - and the
fact that all Dakar riders had sent their bikes & equipment to Argentina and had time available
for participating, it received a tremendous amount of publicity.

I can report to you that in Norway alone, the participation of Ullevålseter on the NMF bike
received primetime news coverage on both the main public TV channels and 47 newspaper
articles all over Norway due to our pre-event press conference - and nice result coverage

afterwards. The presence of RTL, Eurosport, Motor TV and many Danish TV media was
important. In addition, a lot of video cameras was covering everything during this event and
uploaded to different internet sites. The assigned video production company Future Creation
did a great job (se the teaser on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNzkhTy3Oyc ).

The organisers have produced an extensive list of the media coverage. The most outstanding
element is the extensive internet publicity - creating a lot of discussions and comments from
people all over the world - most of which is very positive.

The FIM Ride Green Eco Enduro also got a more official connotation to the happenings of the
COP15. The event was in the brochures and calendars of the Climate Change Conference
(Wonderful Copenhagen COP15 calendar, Visit Denmark and the Danish Foreign
Ministry COP15 press-calendar). And on the third day in Copenhagen City, we had the
honour of a visit from Mr. Juan Carlos BRANDT, Chief Advocacy and Special events and Mrs.
Enrica Baessato, Directors Office - both representing the Department of Public Information
at the United Nations H.Q.

RIDING GREEN

Report from FIM Ride Green Eco Enduro, Copenhagen, Denmark 11 -13 december 2009 5
THE PRESENCE OF FIM / AEWG

From one of the press releases of the event:"

" «This is a historic moment and you have all opened a new page in the history of
" motorcycling, said Anders Minken, member of the FIM Alternative Energy Working
" Group at the gala dinner.»

For the FIM to have embraced this Danish initiative, with an inclusion in the event title, and to
be present with two coordinators (AEWG & Enduro) and an AEWG representative proved to
be of great importance. With a new area of motorcycling and motorcycle sports in progress,
we see initiatives for green riding where no «ownership» has yet been established. If FIM
should let this happen without offering partnership and support, we could risk that the future
of motorcycling no longer would be associated with FIM.

Our presence in Copenhagen was well received and recognized by organisers, riders, media
and the world in general. New potential stakeholder and partner have seen us. We
communicate that FIM gards also this new territory.

I received a lot of comments from different parties - in particular riders - expressing surprise
and contentment on the FIM presence and the effort from FIM to lead this development.

FIM was very visoble with logo, banners and rollups everywhere.

THE FUTURE

One of the prominent conclusions from riders and organisers alike was that this should be
repeated and preferably made a yearly event. There was also a lot of interest for having a series
or cup for el enduro as soon as possible. The Scandinavian countries also talked about
creating a Nordic cup.

With the ongoing technical development, and hopefully with traditional manufacturers
joining in, the off road disciplines will perhaps profit the most from this green development,
as the lack of noise and pollution opens up for the use of new terrain closer to populated areas
and thereby better accessibility for both riders and spectators.

This is not the finish line. FIM are only lining up for the start of the race towards a carbon
neutral future for motorsport. We are up front, but I am not quite sure we have the pole
position. This is where we need to rev up our electrical engines and keep going at full speed
for the years to come.
