Developmental Competency 7

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
For each of the learning outcomes, found on the
following pages, the students must provide and record
their evidence of achievement.
Students should support their evidence of achievement
by relevant references where possible.
Evidence of achievement recorded by the students must
be verified and signed off by the WBL Mentor. (Sheet is
available under menu option 8).
Students are encouraged to record their evidence of
achievement succinctly.

Learning Outcomes 7.1
Demonstrates an understanding of the key factors, which foster professional
relations within the work place
One has to abide by commitments and communicate if there are any changes. One has to show
respect towards all employees of the organisation. Mutual respect, understanding and agreement
need to be promoted in the workplace so as to maintain a pleasant working atmosphere.
The law obviously needs to be respected in any decisions or projects undertaken.

Learning Outcomes 7.2


Abides by stipulated policies and codes of professional practice
One has to abide by rules, ethics and regulations of organisation.
Engineers have to abide by ethical codes of professional practice for engineers.

Learning Outcomes 7.3
Demonstrates an understanding of the ethical, legal and professional elements of
practice
The ethical aspects of professional practice include recommended set of behaviours/standards
put in place by the organisation. For instance one has to be one time at work, should respect the
amount of time given for lunch break, respect deadlines for projects, etc.
The legal aspect includes each and every work done or project undertaken must be according to
Road Traffic Act.
Registered engineers that work in the organisation should abide by the ethical code of
professional practice for engineers and help in the ease of completion of projects or work
undertaken by organisation.

Learning Outcomes 7.4


Conducts self in a professional manner at all times
One has to adopt a positive attitude all the time and despite the gravity of the situation and
various problems encountered. One has to foster mutual respect and understanding among ones
peers, colleagues, technical staff, chief officers, directors, administrative and clerical staff.

Learning Outcomes 7.5
Promotes confidentiality in respect of the personnel, the business and activities
within the allocated organisation
Personal matters pertaining to a working individual should remain confidential as it can disturb
the flow of work and prevent the person himself to properly deliver at work.
Business and activities should remain confidential even to some department in the organisation
except concerned parties dealing with projects.
If information happens to leak outside the organisation, this can cause the organisation to
malfunction, therefore disabling it to meet its set vision statements and objectives.
