Grow with
the Cass MBA
The Cass MBA is a 12-month journey that begins in
the classroom with training and induction, including
team building, networking and several pre-MBA
workshops to get you up to speed.

This broadening of perspective continues into the third

term, when you will work on your elective modules,
following the specialist or generalist pathways you
choose to reflect your personal interests.

The first two terms are then divided into four

integrated learning blocks covering the essential
topics of modern management. Each block consists
of three core modules and ends with an integration
week. This combines group work, case study
analysis, presentations and simulation exercises to
consolidate your learning and test your ability to
resolve business challenges under pressure.

The final phase of the MBA is devoted to your specialist

Business Mastery Project an opportunity to develop
further and integrate key skills and areas of interest in
line with your future career goals. By the time you
graduate, your journey from the classroom to the heart
of business will have equipped you with the intellectual
resources and practical skills to embark on the next stage
of your career.

As you progress through the MBA, you will quickly

develop agility and stamina as you work through a
series of intense business challenges. One week youll
be working with a large corporate such as KPMG on
their future vision, the next developing insights with
fast growing UK companies during the Strategy
Project, or shifting a gear and working with SMEs in
international emerging markets.
The Strategy Project provides a rigorous but highly
rewarding test of your strategic audit and analysis
capabilities. Working as a team of consultants, you will
undertake a live commercial project for a UK business
client. This culminates with a group presentation to a
panel of experts drawn from industry and the Cass
alumni network.

Lifelong team
building skills
The Cass MBA is an invaluable opportunity to hone
personal and professional attributes that are crucial
for effective management in the modern world.
Leadership is more important than ever in todays
rapidly changing and aggressively competitive
marketplace. To consistently deliver outstanding
results, turn a business around, or take it in a new
direction, you will need the interpersonal skills to
take the best people with you on your journey.
The value of developing solid leadership and
teamworking abilities will become exhilaratingly clear
during your orientation week. We will take you away
for an action-packed weekend that sets the context for
future group work and is an excellent way to develop
strong relationships with your fellow students.

Collaborative working and effective team building are

essential parts of the MBA, and you will be assessed
on the basis of individual work, exams and group
assignments. You will work in teams throughout the
course, supported by mentors who are recent MBA
graduates. These teams will be multidisciplinary and
multicultural, reflecting the breadth of our intake.

As you expand your personal network to include other

practical assignments, a deeper understanding of the

enrich your professional progress.

Business issues do not come neatly labelled as

marketing, strategy or finance, and a crucial
facet of the MBA experience is understanding
how these fundamental disciplines relate to each
other. So, at the end of each of the four core
learning blocks, faculty members collaborate
to design and deliver a week-long learning
experience that demonstrates how key subjects
come together inthe resolution of real-world
business challenges.

Bringing it
together

Taking place at Cass or on location with a

partner company, these integration weeks can
besimulations in which groups compete to
deliver results against time or exercises in
analysis, inviting you to form clear opinions
and make confident recommendations. They
will stretch you, testing your creativity and
taking you outside your comfort zone. Many
former students consider these projects among
their most exhilarating experiences at Cass.

An early highlight was the first Integration Week, which

tested skills acquired during the strategy, organisational
behaviour, and accounting and financial analysis modules.
By combining the knowledge given to us by the course with
the diverse range of skill sets in our team, we were able to
dissect the complex issues facing our chosen company. We
then suggested practical ways to overcome the issues that they
face. The fact that we won the challenge was an added bonus!
Neil Clement
Full-Time MBA Alumni 201112

I really enjoyed the Integration Weeks, since they gave

me the opportunity to think creatively and to use the
knowledge I had recently gained. They also made some
of the more complex concepts clearer by adding a
practical dimension to my studies.

Recent examples of integration week activities

include a marketing strategy simulation,a
film-making challenge, a research exercise for
KPMG, and a strategic and financial analysis
of high street firms. Each of these tasks eases
the transition from academic theory to practical
application, teaching you how to apply key
concepts and modelsin real-world conditions
where time is precious, resources are limited
and information is often imperfect.

emerging markets
As you progress through the MBA, you will have
opportunities to test everything you have learnt in
challenging conditions. In the Emerging Markets
Consultancy Week, you will tackle business issues
overseas with a company operating in one of Europes
dynamic and pressurised emerging markets.
This project reflects the strong international element
that runs through the Cass MBA, and is the perfect
opportunity to road-test all the management and
business tools you have so far acquired.
You will spend one week working closely with the
company, collecting data and assessing information,
understanding its unique cultural and business
dynamics, and presenting your initial findings. Your
team then has a further four weeks to provide a full
set of recommendations to the company.
Exposing you to real problems in a dynamic market
helps you to apply lessons from the MBA course.
In return, local companies benefit from your

Looking to
the future
In the later stages of the MBA, attention turns to planning
ahead and building a platform for your future career.
Using your professional goals and aspirations as the
driving force behind your choice of electives and Business
Mastery Project (BMP), you will lay down lasting
foundations and begin to build networks that will prove
decisive in the years ahead. For example, you might
choose to develop a specialist path in areas relating to
consultancy, entrepreneurship or marketing, or combine
electives from these pathways. Izindi Visagie, an MBA
graduate in 2011 talks about the choices she made:
As the MBA draws to a close, the Business Mastery
Project brings everything you have learned together
in a challenging, but very satisfying, way. With
a professional background in law, I selected the topic
Venture Capital Investment Criteria because the core
modules and my choice of electives had opened my
eyes to the possibility of a career in this field.
The desktop research I undertook for the BMP, and
interviewing 16 venture capitalists to inform my
assessment, further broadened my knowledge of
the subject. This blend of deeper understanding
and practical experience left me in no doubt that
this was the area into which I wanted to move.
At around the time I started my research for the BMP,
I was fortunate enough to be appointed as an intern at
the Cass Entrepreneurship Fund, which forms part of
the Peter Cullum Centre for Entrepreneurship at Cass.
The experience proved invaluable.

It was great to see a venture capital fund in action,

and to be part of a process that I believe is crucial to
the future wellbeing of business in the UK and beyond.
My day-to-day work supporting the Investment Director
brought together everything I was taught on the MBA,
on a technical and a practical level.
Not only did I gain crucial experience with a 10m
venture capital fund that is responsible for helping Cass
alumni to turn promising businesses into substantial
commercial operations, I also became keenly aware of
how the Centre for Entrepreneurship supports current
and former students in their quest for success. Its a side
of Cass that prospective students sometimes overlook,
and yet the boost it gives to budding entrepreneurs
can prove key to turning what they have learned into
tangible achievements.
After graduating, I secured a position at a large venture
capital firm where I have been able to successfully
combine my legal acumen with the business skills
acquired during my MBA studies. I am thoroughly
enjoying working in the venture capital environment
and I relish the opportunity to apply my knowledge as
part of a global team. At the same time, the entrepreneurial
spirit awakened during my time at Cass urges me to
consider embarking on a venture of my own. Once
my ideas have crystallised, my first port of call will be

I found it both informative and
