Vagianos, Alanna. "The Reaction To #LikeAGirl Is Exactly Why It's So Important." The
Huffington Post. TheHuffingtonPost.com, 03 Feb. 2015. Web. 06 Mar. 2015.
This article from the renounced Huffington Post, reviews the effects and reactions to the
#Like a girl campaign. The author of this article describes the video and points out some of the
ideas of the campaign as well as their social experiments done to support the concern with using
the words to describe someone doing something like a girl, as an insult. It states that to many
of the people whom have a negative interpretation of the words, it means doing something badly
or wrong. The author also includes picture that support their side of the idea and shows examples
of strong, confident women doing something brave and being confident of what they are doing
like a girl. It is interesting that the also include the opposition and those who think that they are
Meninists and show them why they are wrong in their uproar to go against the campaign. The
article brings up an important factor that affects womens as well as mens nature as sexism and
how it is still a part of our everyday life: using those opposing the movement as an example of it.
The way that the author of the article defends its support for the movement when it calls out
those who oppose it, serves as a strong point in the article and which is why I will use this article.
I will use this article to support why using phrases such as Like a girl affect womens selfesteem as well as girls self-esteem. I will also use the authors point of view that this campaign
is important when supporting the idea of self-esteem in girls and women. The Huffington Post is
known for its important and serious reviews on topics that affect everyday life and which is why
they are a credible source to use to support my topic.

"Always #LikeAGirl - Meet the Director, Lauren Greenfield." YouTube. YouTube, 09 July 2014.
Web. 10 Mar. 2015.
This video was created to meet the creator of the like a girl video that the Always
Company started. Director Lauren Greenfield explain her purpose for creating such video
which was to encourage and empower women as well as young girls to have high self
esteem and not allow society to shape their self-esteem with phrases that are used as an
insult. She wants to make doing something like a girl, to mean doing something right and
correctly and like no other and not in a wrong of silly way as the experimented shown in
the video. I find it interesting to know first-hand from the director in an interview like
video, to understand the purpose of the campaign and its goal. Not only does this support
the self-esteem issues because of words like the ones mentioned but you see how women
realize as well as boys the way theyre using the words incorrectly and how girls and
women dont feel as confident because they feel insulted. Because of the interview
coming from the director and the main creators of the campaign, this is a very useful and
credible source. Not only do you get a one on one experience into the directors thoughts
and purposes but you also understand and see proof of the effects of using those insults. I
will use this to support my thesis and use its examples as solid proof.
Law, Bridget M. "What Feminism Means Today." Http://www.apa.org. American Psychological
Association, 1 Sept. 2006. Web. 08 Mar. 2015.
The American Psychological Association is a very credible and renowned source for
psychological and health topics such as self-esteem in women and girls. This excerpt
from a larger collection focuses on feminism which is ultimately why people use like a
girl as a way of insulting another persons way of doing something. As Cynthia de las

Fuentes, PhD and ex-president of one of APAs divisions, was asked about feminism and
if it still is around today regardless of the rule ad laws against it. She answers that it is
still around no matter how long its been with the laws used to protect gender equality.
Other women, graduates of various institutions also share the same ideas and believe that
feminism is around today and if affects women and their self-value and that that should
change so that is should mean that women can do whatever it is that they may want to
accomplish. The answers from the questioned also lead to topics such as the gender wage
gap and how that still is a problem for women. The APA is a very credible source and the
excerpt is used to describe feminism clearly through the mind of a woman. However, it
lacks the focus of the topic at hand and for that reason, i may not use this as one of my
sources. The topics are also much generalized in terms of feminism and dont really
explain anything about the effect of self-esteem in women because of these issues.
Clay, Daniel, Vivian L. Vignoles, and Helga Dittmar. "Body Image and Self-Esteem Among
Adolescent Girls: Testing the Influence of Sociocultural Factors." JOURNAL OF
RESEARCH ON ADOLESCENCE (2005): 451-77. Web.
The following scholarly study is part of a journal of research on adolescences. The topics
focused on are self-esteem as well as its connection to body image and the factors that
contribute to lower self-esteem in girls during adolescence. As their examples to support
their claims, the authors use the effects social media as well as social life and even media
in general have on the self-esteem of young girls. This also focuses on social cultural
factors that may influence young girls and how the change is self-esteem causes changes
in the mindset onto adulthood. Because this source was included in a journal about
research on adolescences and because it is a part of a university in London, the sources

seems one to be credible and scholarly. Unfortunately, the information and study seem to
be a little out of date and its focus of social media and body image doesnt go along with
the derogatory and negative connotation of just being a girl or doing something like a
girl. For those reason, I dont plan to include this as one of my sources unless there is a
more fundamental topic covered that explains how society and the social effects apart
from the media, affect the negative connotation of being a girl.
