Frederick II set off on a crusade to reclaim Jerusalem for all of Christianity. Now, he has finally returned, having claimed not only Jerusalem, but Jaffa, Sidon, Bethlehem, and Nazareth. When he backed out from the Fifth Crusade due to illness, he was scorned and excommunicated by the Pope, but now he has proven them wrong. Even without the support of the church, he managed to lead one of the most successful crusades yet. King Frederick II of Hohenstaufen is a brave, powerful, and most importantly
cunning man. After unreasonably being
excommunicated by the respected Pope Gregory IX, his crusade army became small in number, and attacking the Ayyubid Empire would be a dire mistake. Thus, he knew he would have to approach things a different way. Knowing that Sultan Malik Al-Kamil of Egypt was preoccupied with suppressing rebellions in Syria, Frederick approached Al-Kamil, exaggerating the size of his army, telling him it was much larger than it actually was. Frederick also impressed Al-Kamil with his knowledge of Arabic language and culture, which lead to the ten year
peace treaty to be signed in exchange for
the cities to be ceded to Christian rule. Additionally, Frederick agreed to support AlKamil against his own nephew, al-Nasir. In March, Frederick II crowns himself King of Jerusalem. Now, he has finally returned to Naples, reclaiming his land from the Pope. With his clever diplomacy, Frederick managed to accomplish what the other crusades had failed to do: Reclaim the Holy Land.

Yesterday was the anticipated Naples
Grand Derby, amassing more than one thousand avid horse racing fans. The stakes were placed on Lucky Star, who was this years most promising competitor. He got off to a rough start early in the race, having not been able to get out of the stall. After breaking out, he managed to pick up the pace and shoot in front of the pack. Tragically at the last minute, Lucky Star tripped and tumble to a halt, just inches away from the finish line. Northern Dancer took the win with a clean finish.
