QQC OF POWER OF PROTOCOL

BY RADHIKA BAGDAI
MY FEEL ABOUT THIS BOOK:
I feel that this book is really powerful to make tasks, planning,
training and teaching smooth and easy if used rightly. But to
be very honest I found first few pages so boring and eye
stressing that I really dint want to read. But deadlines make
you do few things which you dont wish to do otherwise. I had
to read so it did not make much sense and I was unable to
connect initially. But then when i changed my glasses from
had to read to want to read then connections came
automatically and it made lot of sense. I am glad that I
changed my glasses or else I would have just read with eyes
not mind, and would have submitted stuff on given deadline
without actually learning anything from it. But one thing
which I felt while reading the book was that it needs lot of
focus and peaceful time to read, churn, re read and then
reflect on it. I havent finished reading the whole book as I
dint wanted to finish reading just for the sake of it, so will
finish reading it at leisure now.
But whatever I read connected and learnt from few of the
striking protocols are as follows:

CLEARING PROTOCOL:
I just loved this idea of clearing whatever is in our mind
before or after any particular meeting, training or
workshops. Its actually very difficult at times to focus on
something being spoken by the speaker as our mind is
somewhere else. We usually dont get time to switch off
and on from the task we are doing. This protocol if
followed before starting a meeting/training then it will
give time to the opposite person to switch off from one
thing and switch over to another. If used post meeting
then it will help the opposite person to speak his/her
thought s out and will leave the place with clear mind
rather than lingering mind.
I could connect our intense SPARSH TRAINING while
reading this protocol. Our trainer gives us clearing time
wherein he asks us to speak what thought are going on in
your mind at that very moment.
I feel I can use this protocol when parents come for
workshops or MLV/ SLC in right way. We do take feel of
parents after the event or meeting is over but not prior.
So this protocol will help me in deriving parents total
attention if I have given them time to switch off earlier
events before the event. When I will use this protocol
with focus after the event then it will give me an idea as
to what thoughts parents are going home. It will also give

me an opportunity to work on my planning if I find

parents thoughts not matching with my purpose of the
meeting.

FEARS AND HOPES:

My instant connection to this protocol was me embarking
the PBL journey. I embarked this new journey with such
mixed feelings of fears and hopes. In such a situation if
the concerned person encourages me to speak aloud my
fears and hopes then I feel I will be very much at ease
throughout my journey as my mind is not being hovered
by any fears or doubts. This protocol will assist me in
getting my hoped for outcomes in its place by working
upon my fears. I completely agree with the line that says
that worst feelings once expressed makes things easier
and smoother.
My learning is that I should take up this protocol on day 1
of our new academic year with my audiences
(students/parents) to know their fears and hopes. This
will help me in embarking them on the journey of
learning more smoothly.
Jigsaw protocol:
I could connect jigsaw protocol with our Differentiated
Instruction training. In DI training this jigsaw method is

one of the strategies for cooperative group learning,

under the heading of Keeping students on Task. This
strategy is very powerful in learning more in less time. It
derives better results when done with small groups.
For eg: In a class there are 24 students and they are
divided in groups of four. Then from each group of four,
one member goes in other group to learn something new
and comes back and shares it in his group. Similarly all
other members also go in other group, learn something,
take notes of it and share it with his group. In this way
four different things are learned in a group from each
other. This increases level of interdependence and thus
cooperative learning happens automatically.
I have used jig saw strategy with teachers of our school
during my Table Talk and it really made sense and
worked too. But I cant use this protocol at playhouse
level but can surely use this with K1 and K2 students.
Learning from speaker protocol:
While reading this protocol I was able to visualize a scene
wherein an expert has been called to give a speech and
he exceeds his time limit of speech and on the other
hand whatever little time is left for question and answer
session, in that time questions are posed in form of small
speeches due to which expert can hardly address 2 to 3

questions. The purpose of learning is not achieved

completely. This protocol can really help in deriving
optimum learning as there is enough time for speaker to
speak and then have healthy interaction too. But before
using this protocol, speaker and learners both should be
briefed about the protocol in detail so that they are well
aware of their roles.
Stuff and vision protocol:
This protocol struck me instantly when I read Good
teaching is a combination of the right stuff and the right
vision. As a teacher I have faced this many a times that I
have lot of material for the coming up POI unit or Event
but I get lost while sorting right stuff for my students.
Thus my vision becomes little blur. If I can get right and
purposeful stuff keeping my teaching goals in mind then
the vision of what students would do with that stuff and
what would they learn form that stuff becomes very
clear.
I am planning to use this protocol in my team for putting
forward my vision of our students MLV event. I loved the
idea of linking stuff with vision through this protocol.
ONE SENTENCE WHICH STRUCK ME:
From School visit protocol one sentence which gave me
a new perspective about good school was, Good schools

are always work in progress. According to me good

school is the one where students are safe and secured
physically, mentally and emotionally. Good school is the
one where students arrives and departs happily. But this
sentence gave me a new insight that a good school is the
one where there is always work in progress. Work in
progress means something /person is trying constantly to
better itself.
Work in progress mode can happen in school only if we
are open to change old methods and update our self with
new ideas to make it better. Keeping our 21st century
students in mind, we teachers play a lead role in making
our school as good school by updating our knowledge
and strategies according to current situation.
I would take great pride in saying that TGES is providing
teachers with such opportunities where in we Sharpen
our Saw to strike better for each academic year. One such
opportunity is PBL training.
