The teeth are all simple hollow cones implanted in deep sockets , and those of the upper
jaw are remarkably differentiated. The larges t
tooth, which may be appropriately designated a
canine, is implanted on either side in the
hinder part of the premaxilla. Its great socket,
extending to the superior limit of the bone, is
well shown in the skull n 206 (pI. I, .fig. I c)
where the outer wall is accidentally broken away.
It is somewhat laterally compressed, and a fractured transverse section di s plays concentric lamellre of dentine. In front of th e canine the
premaxilla bears at least two small incisiform
teeth, as shown by n 201; and it is probable
that there was still a third incisor in advance
of these. The bases of the seven maxillary teeth
are bes t shown in transverse section in n 200
(pI. JI, fig. 4), the series extending almost to the
hinder end of the bone. They are closely arranged, much laterally compressed , and with the
longer transverse axis a little oblique. The foremost t(loth is only about half as large as the
others. of which the bases are nearly equal in
size. The crowns of these teeth are not com pletely preserved in any specimen, but they are
tolerably well exposed in the left maxil'la of
n 241 (pI. Il, fig. 5), where the outer face IS
vertically fissured and bears a slight trace of

APPENDICULAR SKELETON.
ESQUELETO APENDICULAR.
Il,
fig.

cessitate the reference of the genus to the essentially Mesozoic tribe of crocodiles to wh ich HuxJey gave the subordinal name of Mesosuchia.
The feeble separation of. the lateral temporal
fossre from t~e orb it merely by a s lender inn er
bar, and the relatively small size of the supratemporal fossre , are clwracters removing the animal from tl/e great family of Teleosauridre, so
. well represented in most marine deposits of the
Jurassic period; while precisely these same characters assign it to the group of fluviatile or
marsh crocodiles typified by the genera Goniopholis, Bernissartia, Theriosuc1ws, NannoslIclws,
and OUJeniaslIchus, in the \Vealden and Purbeck
Formations of Europe. It is on ly with these few
brevirostrine genera that comparison seems necessary, and the new Patagonian fossil is found
to difTer from the first four (OUJelliasllchus is too
imperfectly known) in the forwardly directed anterior nasal opening, in th e presence of a sma ll
antorb ital vacuity , and apparently in the total
absence of dermal armour. Goni{)pholis and NallIlOSlIC/zllS also have a longer skull with comparatively numerous teeth and the nasal bones
not quite reaching the ' anterior nasal opening.
The l'iosllChllS exhib its no "acuity in the mandibular ramus, and a lth ough the teeth are highly
d ifferentiated, the canines are in more than
onc pair. OUJeniasllc1ws. known on ly by the
mandible, is also destitute of a vacuity in the
side of each ramus; but its teeth are very few
in number, confined to the anterior third of th.e
ja\\'. The remains from Patagonia thus represent a new genus which may be named and
character ized as follo\Ys:-

biting within the upper jaw , with a short pointed symphysis into which the splenial enters; a
larg e vacuity in the side of each ramus, and
the articular end not cuned upwards. Teeth few
in number , latera lly compressed , some feebly
serrated ; th e series of the upper jaw much differentiated, comprising two or three small incisors and one very large canine in each prema x illa , and seven teeth of more uniform size
in each maxilla; the series in the low er jaw comprising ten teeth o n each s ide gra duall y increasing

One fragmentary group of bones in the collection mad'e by Mr. Roth (n 2(5) seems to
belong to another Crocodilian, closely allied to
