Sophie was asked what kind of people she enjoys spending time with.
I like people who have the same interests as I have. These people
usually enjoy good food and good company. They are usually easygoing too. That is they are tolerant with other people with different
ideas about life and other things. They usually enjoy a good discussion
or even an argument. They dont mind if other people have completely
different opinions from theirs. On the other hand, I dont get on with
people who are very untidy or selfish. For example, a friend once came
to stay with me and left her clothes all over my flat. She didnt bother to
help with the washing up after I cooked for her. When we went out for
a meal once, she expected me to pay for it. Thats the kind of person
I dont like.

Listening Comprehension
(The first term)
1.
Tito comes from South Africa and is very clever. Every morning he gets up and patiently waits for
Marthas orders. Whats so clever about that? Tito is a monkey. Martha, his owner, is paralyzed. She
had a car accident and now can only move her head.
Tito feeds Martha: he picks up her food with a spoon and puts it in her mouth. If she wants to
listen to some music, Tito turns on the stereo, picks out a CD and puts it on. He can even turn the
volume up or down!
Tito is a capuchin monkey. Capuchin monkeys are trained for jobs like this one because they are
small and friendly. It takes them four years to learn their job, but they are patient and hard-working.
And they can live for up to 20 years.
Martha says about Tito: I was a bit worried at first, but everything is fine. Tito is very helpful. He
is more like a person than a monkey. I simply couldnt do without him.

Children look forward to seeing a jolly, white-bearded man in a red suit named Santa Claus.
4. The bunny, brightly coloured eggs, and baskets filled with treats all of these popular traditions
are a part of this holiday.

This holiday is always celebrated on a Sunday, the day of Christs resurrection. But the exact date of
the holiday changes from year to year. It falls sometime between March 22 and April 25.
2. This holiday is celebrated in May. The central figure of this day is a May Queen. Theres often

Test 6
(Unit 6. Sport in Britain)
The first Wimbledon tennis championship was in 1877. At first it was all-English. Now its
international, and the last English mens champion was Fred Perry in 1936.
The youngest player at Wimbledon was Kathy Rinaldy in 1981: she was only 14. Boris Becker was
17 when he became mens champion in 1985. The youngest womens champion was 15-year-old
Lottie Dod in 1887.
John McEnroe was a great Wimbledon player, too. He won 3 times, between 1981 and 1984. He
had a very fast reaction and he was a clever, original player. But most people remember him for
something else. He was extremely bad-tempered. He often got angry with the umpire. He often
threw his racket on the ground. He often complained about decisions. When his ball was out, he
shouted, The ball was IN! When the other players ball was in, he shouted, The ball was OUT! He
often said to the umpire, You cant be serious!
Test 7
(Unit 7. Entertainment Programme)
Saving Private Ryan is a motion picture about a group of United States soldiers during World
War II (19391945). The soldiers are sent behind German lines to save Private James Francis Ryan
(played by Matt Damon), whose three brothers have been killed in action in the same week.
The director of the film, Steven Spielberg, wanted certain relationships between the actors to make
the film more believable. So Spielberg sent the actors to the boot camp the training camp for
soldiers to prepare for the film. He wanted the actors to understand what being a soldier was like.
In Spielbergs film the eight soldiers cant see the point of their mission, and the actors reaction on
sending them to the camp was the same. They all became very tired and wanted to leave. But as in
the film, they continued doing what they had to do, and it brought them closer together. Spielberg
wanted these eight actors to feel a sense of unity, but he also wanted them to feel separate from
Matt Damon, because in the film they didnt like his hero. Thats why Spielberg didnt sent Matt
Damon to the camp together with the others. The other actors knew that while they were shaking
and freezing in the camp, Matt Damon was staying in a comfortable hotel, and that meant that Matt
Damon felt separate from the others.
Spielbergs plan worked. He made an excellent film that won five Academy Awards.

competition himself. Naturally, he kept his plan a secret from everybody.
