Well, what are the kids of the new millennium really like? What are
their dreams and interests? How do they see the world and how would
they like it? The young of today are interesting, complex and varied in
many
different ways. Its not easy to analyze this multicoloured
world, nor to describe it in just a few words. You only have to look
around you: so many different
and habits, and ideas!
We wanted to ask some boys and girls a simple question: What are you
? Lets see what Lucia answered.
Lucia: Im a very serious and
person and Ive got
a pretty good idea about my future: thats why I think its very important
to study well. Perhaps, Im a bit
,
always doing what really interests me. I dont care much about film or
pop stars, not even the ones my friends are crazy about. I always try to
find some excuse not to go to parties and if I go I dont mix with the
crowd. I like to use the computer, but only for work. Im

in lots of things and always want to learn something new.

I like people who have the same interests as I have. These people

ideas about life and other things. They usually enjoy a good discussion
or even an argument. They dont mind if other people have completely
different opinions from theirs. On the other hand, I dont get on with
people who are very untidy or selfish. For example, a friend once came
to stay with me and left her clothes all over my flat. She didnt bother to
help with the washing up after I cooked for her. When we went out for
a meal once, she expected me to pay for it. Thats the kind of person

In London you can try the cooking of almost every country in the
world. Many restaurants and cafes sell take-away food. Perhaps the best
known is the British Fish and
Chips
, a very simple dish, that
consists of a
fish and potatoes.
Some old cafe in Greenwich specialize in Pie and Mash. Thats
another traditional dish which consists of a pie, usually a
pie,
and mashed potato. Its simple, but
and its
cheap. The family who own the cafe have been making pie and mash for
generations. The meal is served either with gravy, thats a dark meaty
sauce, or parsley
, which they call green liquor.
If you asked for just a coffee or tea, you would usually get milk in it.

My last visit to the theatre stands out vividly in my memory, says

TEXTS FOR TEACHERS

Test 3
(Unit 3. Doing Chores)
How far does the average housewife travel as she cleans, dusts, washes and cares after the
children? Mrs Arnold took part in an experiment to look for an answer. She wore a pedometer for
a whole day. Her day started at 7.30 a. m. when she made breakfast for her husband and children.
She washed the dishes, made the beds and drove the children to school.
During the morning she cleaned the bedrooms and bathrooms and did the washing up. She also
went next door to water her neighbors plants. She picked up the children at noon and then made
lunch, vacuumed the floors and cleaned the windows. Then came the evening meal for the family. Mrs
Arnolds total walking distance was about 15 kilometres.

Listening Comprehension
(The first term)
1.
Tito comes from South Africa and is very clever. Every morning he gets up and patiently waits for
Marthas orders. Whats so clever about that? Tito is a monkey. Martha, his owner, is paralyzed. She
had a car accident and now can only move her head.
Tito feeds Martha: he picks up her food with a spoon and puts it in her mouth. If she wants to
listen to some music, Tito turns on the stereo, picks out a CD and puts it on. He can even turn the
volume up or down!
Tito is a capuchin monkey. Capuchin monkeys are trained for jobs like this one because they are
small and friendly. It takes them four years to learn their job, but they are patient and hard-working.
And they can live for up to 20 years.
Martha says about Tito: I was a bit worried at first, but everything is fine. Tito is very helpful. He
is more like a person than a monkey. I simply couldnt do without him.
2. Banana-Yoghurt Shake
You need: 1 banana, 1 cup of freshly squeezed orange juice and 1 cup of yoghurt.
Take one banana, peel it and then freeze it in the fridge. Cut two oranges into halves and squeeze
some orange juice (about 1 cup). Put the banana, yoghurt, and orange juice into a blender and mix
them until smooth. Your shake is ready!

Test 5
(Unit 5. British Lifestyle)
Variant 1
1. Children in costumes race from house to house asking for treats. A carved pumpkin, called
a jack-o-lantern, grins from a porch as the children pass. According to a legend, jack-o-lanterns
protect people in their homes from ghostly spirits.
2. This holiday is celebrated in February. People exchange greeting cards or gifts of candy and
flowers with friends and people they love on this day.
3. On the eve of this holiday people in Britain send each other cards and give gifts to their families
and friends. In homes and in stores, evergreen trees glitter with colourful lights and ornaments.
Children look forward to seeing a jolly, white-bearded man in a red suit named Santa Claus.
4. The bunny, brightly coloured eggs, and baskets filled with treats all of these popular traditions
are a part of this holiday.

61

Variant 2
1. This is a joyous holiday for Christians. It celebrates the resurrection, or rebirth, of Jesus Christ.
This holiday is always celebrated on a Sunday, the day of Christs resurrection. But the exact date of
the holiday changes from year to year. It falls sometime between March 22 and April 25.
2. This holiday is celebrated in May. The central figure of this day is a May Queen. Theres often
a May King too. Different sports and games are played outdoors.
3. The symbol of this holiday is a large red heart with an arrow through it. Its a time for silly
rhymes for those who are dear to us, on heart-shaped cards.
4. This holiday is not as widely celebrated in Britain as Christmas. But many people have a great
party. Theres a funny tradition this day: the First Foot, the first visitor to come. Traditionally, he
should be a man and carry food, drink and coal into the house.

Test 6
(Unit 6. Sport in Britain)
The first Wimbledon tennis championship was in 1877. At first it was all-English. Now its
international, and the last English mens champion was Fred Perry in 1936.
The youngest player at Wimbledon was Kathy Rinaldy in 1981: she was only 14. Boris Becker was
17 when he became mens champion in 1985. The youngest womens champion was 15-year-old
Lottie Dod in 1887.
John McEnroe was a great Wimbledon player, too. He won 3 times, between 1981 and 1984. He
had a very fast reaction and he was a clever, original player. But most people remember him for
something else. He was extremely bad-tempered. He often got angry with the umpire. He often
threw his racket on the ground. He often complained about decisions. When his ball was out, he
shouted, The ball was IN! When the other players ball was in, he shouted, The ball was OUT! He
often said to the umpire, You cant be serious!

Test 7
(Unit 7. Entertainment Programme)
Saving Private Ryan is a motion picture about a group of United States soldiers during World
War II (19391945). The soldiers are sent behind German lines to save Private James Francis Ryan
(played by Matt Damon), whose three brothers have been killed in action in the same week.
The director of the film, Steven Spielberg, wanted certain relationships between the actors to make
the film more believable. So Spielberg sent the actors to the boot camp the training camp for
soldiers to prepare for the film. He wanted the actors to understand what being a soldier was like.
In Spielbergs film the eight soldiers cant see the point of their mission, and the actors reaction on
sending them to the camp was the same. They all became very tired and wanted to leave. But as in
the film, they continued doing what they had to do, and it brought them closer together. Spielberg
wanted these eight actors to feel a sense of unity, but he also wanted them to feel separate from
Matt Damon, because in the film they didnt like his hero. Thats why Spielberg didnt sent Matt
Damon to the camp together with the others. The other actors knew that while they were shaking
and freezing in the camp, Matt Damon was staying in a comfortable hotel, and that meant that Matt
Damon felt separate from the others.
Spielbergs plan worked. He made an excellent film that won five Academy Awards.

This is a story that Charlie Chaplin liked to tell about himself.
It happened when the great actor had become world famous. A theatre announced that
a competition would be held to see who could act like Charlie Chaplin. Those taking part had to dress
like Chaplin, walk like Chaplin and act out one of the roles in Chaplins picture.
When Charlie Chaplin heard about the competition, he decided, as a joke, to take part in the
competition himself. Naturally, he kept his plan a secret from everybody.
When the results of the competition were announced, Charlie Chaplin found out that he had
failed he hadnt won the first price. At first he was greatly disappointed but then he decided that
it would be the best to laugh.
