ABC Momenta Energy Solution Suite:

I.

Operational Excellence
The energy and infrastructure business has traditionally focused on the physical assets

and operations required to reliably meet customer needs. But today, plant operators are as
much in the business of information management as they are in providing energy. Despite the
economic downturn, worldwide demand for energy in its many forms continues to increase.
According to a recent ExxonMobile forecasting report, the largest source of energy demand
through 2040 will be for the fuels used to make electricity.
To supply the growing worldwide need for power, new plants and their accompanying
support infrastructure will have to be built, and existing plants must be maintained. Simply
put, A key indicator of global energy production and consumption growth is mega-project
construction, says Jared Anderson, managing editor at Breaking Energy.
As these facilities pop up and existing ones seek operational synergies, there are common
challenges binding them together. The first and foremost challenge will be meeting the need
for a highly integrated enterprise content management system. Whats driving the demand
now more than ever? Projects have become more complex with more vendors involved at all
phases of the work. With subject matter experts retiring, a better system is needed for
managing years of proprietary know-how. Finally, government regulations, aimed at industry
safety and energy efficiency, are becoming more stringent. ABC Momenta Energy Solution
Suite is a workflow based solution that tackles these issues at all stages of a plants lifecycle:
from design to operations, to decommissioning. Specifically, Momenta suite is made up of 3
key modules:

ABC Momenta Asset Operations

ABC Momenta Capital Projects
ABC Momenta Supplier Connect

Each module is effective for new operations just getting off the ground, as well as
integration into existing systems of organizations in-flight. Momenta for Energy focuses on
the following aspects in the coordination and regulation of content management and
compliance:

The ability to manage, asset information from a single source

Document management and consistency throughout personnel turnover
Immediate access to complete, up to date content including as-built designs,

documentation, standard operating procedure and training docs

Integration with legacy systems (CAD software, project management software and more)
Mobile Access integration with mobile devices for secure information sharing.
Today, Vellihad Railways in the United Arab Emirates illustrates how a critical

infrastructure organization has benefited from responsive content management from ABC. In
their selection process of Momenta for Energy, IT Director Ian Fannon further defined the
landscape: We saw two distinct types of organizations in delivering our solution. The first, a
cloud based software as a service to provide collaboration, is very focused on the engineering
side of things but difficult to transition into future operations. Then youve got more traditional
enterprise management vendors what ABC did was actually bridge that gap with the product
Momenta for Energy. For Fannon, the benefits were tangible right from the beginning: It
actually delivered a lot of capability out of the box and knowledge and understanding of the
processes we needed so we dont increase silos, and dont need to unnecessarily customize our
work, which would increase long-term cost of ownership.
The benefits for Vellihad Rail of ABCs Momenta for Energy suite include a smooth
migration of documents from their existing solution into the Asset Operations and Capital
Projects solution, as well as gains around transmittal and correspondence management. These
benefits become all the more significant when considering that up to 40% of engineering time is
spent trying to find and validate information, and solving for that challenge can deliver more
than a 50% increase in productivity, according to Ovum Research.
II.

Optimizing Projects
With the right content management system in place, organizations should think about

the day to day tactics that can bring about meaningful benefits. What functionality is needed to
streamline the operations of a wind farm, utility, or oil & gas engineering project? Conventional
challenges certainly remain, including managing work to ensure on-time completion within
budget. The right, next generation ECM system however, can make a strong impact in other
areas as well, including workflow management, consolidation of massive volumes of

information, and transmittal management (the dispatching of technical documents from one party
to the other). Warren Wilson, Lead Analyst of Energy/Oil & Gas Technology at Ovum , states
that, Engineers, managers, and people in various other roles spend inordinate amounts of time
simply locating and validating information rather than executing on it.
ABC's forthcoming Supplier Connect service extends the vendor's flagship Momenta
offering to address such problems head-onSupplier Connect, which will be ABC's first true,
multi-tenant public cloud offering, addresses such issues by providing a secure online repository
where documents can be stored and accessed as needed. According to Wilson, Contract and
project management is a natural area for shared cloud deployment because it typically involves
so many separate parties that need to exchange documents.
Extended collaboration management between internal teams, suppliers, and contractors
has become increasingly important as well. Momenta for Energy has made a difference for plant
operators and facilities looking to optimize their business. Oliver Beretta, ICT Business
Application Manager for Italian oil and gas contracting service Raipem SpA, provides further
proof regarding the benefits of this integrated approach: The solution has helped us to reduce IT
support when a new project starts. We need to be able to verify, monitor, plan, and control our
activities, and the best way to do this is to control documents through the Momenta for Energy
solution. With projects underway, plant operators continue to face the challenge of changing
requirements and the need to react to them through a multitude of teams. Raipems experience
with these challenges is symbolic of the industry at large. We are working in a very distributed
environment, with a lot of companies involved in the same project, says Beretta. The
possibility to use these services together is a great added value for us on the project. Indeed,
Momentas Capital Projects offers even greater flexibility for mid-sized organizations looking for
a cloud based offering that can be scaled to match their growing needs. The solution can lower
the total cost of ownership for an ECM by as much as 30 to 60%. We now have a very good
tool to manage our projects in a controlled way, while being flexible to accept client
requirements that are always changing, and at the same time being faster in deployment on the
project, says Beretta.
Being cost effective and working efficiently are goals to strive for in all aspects of a project,
and the Momenta Capital Projects suite is instrumental in doing so. Solution benefits include:

Accelerated early deployment at project inception

Customized project templates with business rules that can be applied to future work
Multilevel progress tracking.

In addition, ABCs Supplier Connect takes ECM even further. It simplifies the review of
transmittals, shared accountability for contract deliverables, and the streamlining of change
request notices and works in concert with Capital Projects. Specifically, transmittals and project
deliverables are created in Capital Projects, and then linked to Supplier Connect where the
collaboration space, access to controls, due dates and transmittal tracking and history are
managed. The Supplier Connect solution has streamlined the transmittal process for both Raipem
and for Vellihad Rail and Fannons team: ABC brought a very skilled consulting team to the
table, who understands the business that were in. They were able to work with us to deploy the
functionality that we want, particularly around transmittal and correspondence
management. Its part of our approach to continuous improvement.

III Compliance and Security

Compliance and security run the show, and in the energy world those standards will
continue to shape the industry. Standards around EPA carbon regulations, to regulator-set
efficiency targets, must be met and integrated into the daily flow of facility operations. Most
regulations can be divided into the following functions: making the energy supply cleaner,
improving reliability, and creating more customized services and new technologies. Many of
these coincide with what the customer wants as well giving operators an even greater incentive
to comply. For example, in a 2014 survey of consumers, the American Council for an EnergyEfficient Economy found that consumers want more products and services to lower their energy
usage. When asked, If your electric utility was given a grant to improve part of their business,
which would you most like to see them invest in? almost half said efficiency, 26 percent said
cleaner power, and 19 percent said better reliability.
Compliance leads to the adoption of smart processes that make data easily accessible
throughout an organization. That data needs to be accessed by external bodies as well, for

compliance with health, safety, security and environmental regulations (HSSE). Momenta for
energy provides these benefits and more, including:

Simplifying approval processes and ensuring inspection readiness

Managing as-built designs, standard operating procedures, and training documents
Creating a full audit trail from day-to-day interactions
Integration with mobile devices for immediate document updates in the field.

What are the consequences of being non-compliant? Lapses in standards can result in
accidents. Therefore, creating valuable training guides and making standard operating procedures
more readily accessible is a must, according to a recent IDC report. Accident investigations at
energy plants are more closely focused on process and risk documentation, in order to defend
against liability claims. Recent investigations have even scrutinized how information is handed
over during shift changes.
Compliance is also unattainable without security organizations need to protect
proprietary information while allowing for convenient sharing of other assets on an as-needed
basis. According to Wilson, in the engineering and energy industry, some vendors remain
concerned about the security of multi-tenant SaaS. But few vendors have ABC's industry-specific
focus, and none match its combination of scale, expertise (including expertise in security), and
market position in document management. ABC believes it has built-in the appropriate level of
security, particularly in light of the risks inherent in ad hoc methods of information exchange
such as email.
By assisting British based Dentrica (parent company of British Gas) with customer
correspondence management, ABCs solution has created a stronger platform for overall
compliance and security. As Vince Devigne, Manager, Integrated Correspondence Information
Systems of Dentrica has confirmed: The challenge is that front line customer service staff didnt
see the exact copy of customer correspondence that we sent out to customers, or that they sent to
us. Letter templates were disparately located, so obviously that was the solution weve
implemented based on ABCs Momenta project; its taken all the inbound and outbound
correspondence in letter format and email, and put it into the same repository using ABC

Momenta version 6.5. Momenta for Energy is managing correspondence intelligently, and
managing massive volumes on demand.
Since the program has been running, that equates to about 87,000,000 pieces of
correspondence, says Devigne. The solution has also lead to great cost savings as well as
helping the company meet compliance standards with regulators and its customers. Were
focusing on customer service as an organization to enhance the customer experience so
customers are on the phone for a shorter period of time, and agents can access information more
quickly. It saves transferring the call to a second person, which is not only a brilliant customer
service benefit but a brilliant cost saving benefit as well.
All in all, the solution suite is all about leveraging the advantages of the public cloud,
while protecting business-sensitive information throughout the information lifecycle. This
supports the creation of a smart ECM ecosystem that is proactive and audit-ready on a regular
basis. The result? Plant and facility operations that perform consistently, even when regulations
always seem to be changing.
