NOTES

TRADITIONAL WORSHIP

The anthem this morning was composed by Stephen

Paulus in 1997 as the closing piece to his short opera,
The Three Hermits, based on a short story by Leo
Tolstoy, performed in the House of Hope Presbyterian
Church in St. Paul, Minnesota. It has textual roots and
musical influence from the Russian Orthodox tradition. It
is written in eight parts with a more chant like, full chordal
setting. Paulus died of complications from a stroke in
2014, on the very day this piece was being performed
on the weekly broadcast by the Mormon Tabernacle
Choir. It has been performed by over a thousand choirs
around the world. It has been frequently heard at
funerals including those of Presidents Gerald Ford and
Ronald Reagan. Its textual roots are found in an evening
hymn from the Orthodox liturgy. It is a song of complete
devotion to and wonder surrounding our Savior. The
Orthodox liturgy is known for awe and reverence in the
music as well as full rich harmonies. The song leads
one to kneel before our glorious Christ. - Dr. Dan Sharp

FAMILIES AT FIRST PRES

First Pres has three rooms to help young families on
Sunday mornings: one nursing room for mothers & infants,
next to the Prayer Room, between the Sanctuary and Lee
Fellowship Hall, and a second nursing room for mothers &
infants, on the 1st floor of Clayton Life Center next to the
elevators.
In addition, we have a Family Room for infants, children and
dads :-) , also on the first floor of Clayton Life Center.
All three rooms have a live television feed from the worship
services.

CONFIRMATION
SUNDAY 2015
Confirmation is an important process in our church,
where children and students confirm an already
existing faith as followers of Jesus. Students learn
essential doctrine and the basics of reformed faith,
giving them language to articulate what they believe.
We have two unique confirmation courses here - one
for youth and one for children. Those students join
us this morning to affirm their faith in Jesus Christ as
Savior and Lord and join the church at the 11:00am
Traditional Worship service in the Sanctuary.
Please welcome them as they join the church this
morning!
