ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE 5E provides readers with a

unique approach to mastering the Code, using highly-detailed, technically-accurate illustrations and
visuals to break down and simplify the expanding volume and complexity of the 2011 National
Electrical Code. By translating the sometimes vague, complicated wording of the Code into
straightforward illustrations and clear explanations, this book provides a resource that will facilitate
comprehension and application of Code requirements for beginning and master electricians alike.
Material is organized logically, covering fundamental provisions first, then grouping code
requirements by the type of occupancy, beginning with one-family dwellings and progressing on to
multi-family housing, commercial locations, and special occupancies. This organization also reflects
how information is needed when working in the electrical industry, better preparing readers for the
real world. The fifth edition of ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE
discusses the new Code changes and shows some of these Code changes through new illustrations
while incorporating other Code changes into existing illustrations. Its comprehensive coverage,
innovative learning approach, and industry-based organization make this an indispensable
supplement to the NEC whether readers need information on a specific area or need to learn the
complete Code.
For 18 years, Charles R. Miller owned and operated a successful commercial electrical contracting
company (Lighthouse Electric Co., Inc.) in Nashville, Tennessee. Now an accomplished author and
educator, Mr. Miller specializes in leading customized seminars on the National Electrical Code
(NEC), as well as National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E. Class and seminar attendees
have included individuals employed by companies such as Ford, A. O. Smith, The Aerostructures
Corporation, and academic institutions such as Tennessee State University, Vanderbilt University,
and Purdue University. Besides teaching his own custom seminars, Mr. Miller teaches for the NFPA.
Mr. Miller also writes and illustrates the "Code In Focus" column in ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR
MAGAZINE every month, and he co-hosted a home improvement radio talk show in Nashville for
more than three years.
I bought this book as a college class requirement, but I will keep it handy as a professional
reference. It does a marvelous job of explaining the NEC with simple, concise explanations (as long
as the reader has at least a basic knowledge of electrical terms). I highly recommend it for anyone
who is studying electrical systems or for professionals who are new to the industry.
Although this got several excellent reviews, I was disappointed when I got it. Sent it right back. I am
used to using my code book based on Articles. This book defines it's own chapters with no cross
reference to NEC articles. I had specifically ordered this book because I had a few questions about
water features that I wanted a better understanding of. Article 680 (swimming pools, fountains)
wasn't even covered by this book. It looks like it would be a nice study manual, but like a few others
I've read, I should have ordered the Handbook instead. Ya gets what ya pays for...
This book has it all and presents it in an easy to understand format. It references each of the topics
with the code with precisision. If you do not have a beginers knowledge of electrical work at least
basic electrical you should start with a more basic book. If you understand how breakers work and
basic series and parallel circuits as they pertain to wiring and want to expand on that knowledge this
is the book for you. It is not intended to teach you electrical, although you can gleen some electrical
from it. It is for someone who has the ability to take existing knowledge and apply the code to that
knowledge. I have been through most of the book at least once and most of it more than that. I
would advise that if you do not own a copy of the NEC code book that you puchase one with this
book. If bought with all of this in mind the book is worth every penny that it costs you. I would highly
recommend this book especially for anyone looking to take the test to get their LLE.
Each topic is addressed visually, with detailed illustrations that get the point across to the reader

rapidly, leaving little room for misinterpretation. While most books on the market mimic the Code's
order of presentation, Illustrated Guide to the NEC concentrates all the information relevant to a
specific type of occupancy in one area so that the reader avoids searching for data from numerous
sources, or from numerous sections within sources. The high-quality, well-designed worksheets in
the book provide the user with the most straight forward, error-proof method of performing essential,
complex calculations.
Miller combines years of experience as an electrical contractor and a trainer in producing the second
edition of this guide to the National Electrical Code(r) (NEC(r)). Designed to teach through
visualization, the text contains over 600 technically precise, highly detailed illustrations to
explainand minimize misinterpretation ofthe NEC requirements. For the second edition, the
text has been thoroughly updated to reflect the requirements of the 2002 NEC. Annotation c. Book

The second edition of Illustrated Guide to the National Electrical CodeA(R) leads professional
electricians, electrical inspectors, and readers on a visual tour through the entire 2002 NECA(R),
conveniently grouping Code requirements according to type of occupancy, including: one-family
dwellings, multi-family dwellings, commercial locations, and special occupancies and equipment.
Central to the book are more than 600 technically precise, highly detailed illustrations that convey
insights into NECA(R) requirements and reduce the potential for misinterpretation of the sometimes
vague and often complex language of the Code. Concise phrases and short blocks of text that can
be read quickly and understood easily further enable the reader to understand what is depicted in
each graphic. Now thoroughly updated based on the 2002 NECA(R), this indispensable explanation
of the Code also features a section on fundamentals making it equally well suited for use by the
novice and master electrician alike.
