55

638 Further unpublished

manuscripts of various
narrative accounts
Written by Private John P Ward who
served in 31 engagements of battle in
the New Zealand Wars.
Amongst the following papers is an early
typewritten draft of the battle of the
Double Crossing on the Napier-Taupo
Road in the campaign of 1870 including
a good description of the NZ Cross
recipient Benjamin Biddle:
A native of Parnell, a pretty little village a
few miles outside of Sunny Auckland; he
is a typical Colonial, about middle height,
broad shouldered, and narrow flanked,
dark, almost swarthy in complexion, his
constitution, on a par with his body, both
hard as nails, his face invariably wreathed
in a sunny dare-devil smile.
Also included is typewritten manuscript
entitled How Dr Brown saved the honour
of the Colonial Force.
Entailing the procedure to return every
man on the sick list as fit for duty
before leaving marching out to take on
Tito-Kowarus forces at Tauranga-Ika.
Another nine page handwritten
document describes Wards meeting up
with the Forest Rangers in Whanganui,
and discussing his desire to join them
with Rob McGregor who had been a
member of Captain Atkinsons corps of
Taranaki Bushrangers, when Ward and
he first met.

56

DUNBAR SLOANE AUCKLAND

Another fifteen page handwritten

account (with corrections throughout in
red ink) describes his joining the Forest
Rangers and being served out with my first
soldiers breakfast a pannikin of coffee
and a dry biscuit.
A further handwritten manuscript
describes a court-marshal and fighting
during the hunt for Te Kooti during
Colonel Whitmores Poverty Bay
campaign.
Prepartions were made for an instant
attack on Te Kooti as his trail showed he
was not very far ahead, but that able and
crafty chieftain did not however, wait for us
to close with him and early next morning
led our force into a splendidly planned
ambuscade, four of our fellows were killed,
including two officers, Captain Carr and
Lieutenant Carnning, and seven others
were wounded.
Also included is a six verse poem by Ward
entitled Paddy Doyles Lamint, a pathetic,
yet withal true account of the sufferings of
an honest old son of the sod;
Twas on the back of a burley big sailor,
Oi was carried to Nga Motu blake strand,
An marched to Fort Carrington Blockhouse,
To mount guard oer this illigent land.
Another nine page handwritten
manuscript describes the conditions of
camp life at Woodalls Redoubt newar
Whanganui during General Whitmores
Taranaki campaign.

A further 16 page handwritten

manuscript details some enthralling
skirmishes whilst scouting at Round
Bush, and the fight at Keteonatea in
1865, finishing with
So we leave the dying hauhau, resume our
march and in 20 minutes or so are out in
open country where we find a large body
of imperial troops. It appears Kepa fellows
dropped on a couple of lots of hauhaus,
killing four of them and capturing three
women, we had killed three more in as
many shots. A short distance from there,
the active force camp for the night, most of
us under flaxbush and fern.
Ward received a NZ War Medal and is
variously mentioned in several books,
including Scotts The Parihaka Story,
Lamberts Story of Old Wairoa and the
East Coast NZ, Hockens Bibliography of
NZ Literature and Bagnell and Richard
Stowers Forest Rangers.

for couriers we charge accordingly. This is to be paid before the
goods leave our premises. We pack with care, however we take
no responsibility for damage once your goods leave our premises.
It is up to the buyer to arrange insurance to cover any damage or
loss in transit.
4. New Zealand Post Office
If you require us to send your items by post we will charge for
packing, postage and incidentals. The goods need to be paid for
immediately following the auction and we will then quote you
