3010 Group Presentation Guidelines

Group presentations ask students to engage in a number of challenging activities

managing group work, leading class discussion, and gaining experience in public
speaking. For this assignment, you are asked to closely examine one chapter or
article from either The Glass Cage or Digital Divide and to be responsible for guiding
class discussion on that day. In preparation for this discussion, you will need to have
a firm grasp on the content of your article (it might help to summarize your
assigned article with your group). You will need to prepare a list of questions to help
guide class discussion these questions should strive to be specific and require
participants to produce more than a yes or no answer (i.e. The question Do you
agree with this article? asks the audience to respond with a yes or no answer.
Instead, make your point specific, Carr argues that technology changes more
rapidly that humans change. In what ways do you find this a troubling or exciting
trend?)
As a group, you should find another article (in-depth from a reliable source) that
provides a type of counterpoint or expansion of the article at hand. As a group, you
will need to summarize and present this article to the classmaking sure we
understand what the new articles claim is. As a group, you will need to present
questions addressing this article as well. Your group will turn in a typed summary of
your new article and a list of questions for discussion.
Finally, you should consider presentationthese should not be boring! If you feel
bored, you can guarantee that your audience does as well! Find ways to help bring
your ideas to life or to demonstrate elements of the articleyou are welcome to use
short video clips, music, live-action performances, whatever you need to
demonstrate some of the elements of the argument to the class. You should NOT
simply read your summary to the class.
Requirements:
At the end of your presentation, you should turn in as a group:
A summary of your new article including a correct MLA citation
A list of discussion questions
As an individual, you should turn in a brief review of how your group worked
together. This should be at least one page double spaced.
Grading: You will be assessed on your presentationthe thoroughness with which
you engaged with the material, your ability to summarize and communicate your
articles topics to the group, your ability to engage the class in discussion, your
abilities to work together (everyone should talk!), and the thoughtfulness and
relevance of your discussion questions. This assignment is worth 100 points.
