Aerospace Coatings,
Color Trends and Much
More

he May issue of Coatings World covers a diverse range of coatings-related issues. For the Aerospace Coatings Market (page
26) article we interviewed industry leaders, PPG and AkzoNobel.
The companies reported that airline mergers and changes in business models will continue to be major drivers to the aerospace coatings market.
Additionally, with fuel costs contributing to approximately one third of airlines operating costs, airlines are always looking for ways to save money.
Reducing weight is one way and this can be done by reducing the number
of layers of paint on an aircraft. Consequently, aerospace companies are
continuously working to develop innovative products with reduced weight,
faster application times, longer service life and increased functionality.
Color Trends(page 30) examines the top paint companies color
trend predictions. Contributing editor, Dave Savastano, takes a look at
what the color experts at some of the leading paint and coatings companies
are touting as this seasons next hot color. From metallics and earth tones
to greens, blues and yellows, experts say there are colors for everyone.
Some readers may have noticed an addition to our International
Coatings Scene columns. We are pleased to welcome Shem Oirere to our
roster. He will be writing a bi-monthly column covering the coatings market in Africa. In this months column, Road Construction Fuels Growth of
Traffic Safety Solutions in Kenya, he reports on growing opportunities for
paint and coatings manufacturers in Kenya as a result of road expansion
and improvement programs to accommodate increasing cargo and passenger traffic volumes and improve safety on the roads. This improvement
initiative means an increased need for road marking paints, road studs,
pavement markers and new partnerships to achieve quality and safer roads.

Court Decision Protects

BASFs Intellectual Property
The Australian High Court recently announced its decision to uphold findings
that SNF has infringed BASFs Rheomax
ETD patents and that those patents are
valid. The decision marks the end of proceedings in Australia, which commenced
in 2008.
Steffen Kudis, head of BASFs Global
Water, Oilfield and Mining Solutions businesses, said, BASF is committed to providing customers with innovative, effective
technologies and solutions. To achieve
this, BASF must be able to protect its investment in years of research and development and intellectual property rights.
The Rheomax ETD Technology is
part of BASFs innovative solutions for
Tailings Management. ETD (Enhanced
Tailings Disposal) is a method of tailings
management in which novel technology
is used to change and control the structural and drainage properties of mineral
processing residues. CW

2013 U.S. Interior Paint Satisfaction Study

Application drives customer satisfaction with paint brands,

while availability and courtesy of staff drives customer satisfaction with paint retailers, according to the J.D. Power and
Associates 2013 U.S. Interior Paint Satisfaction Study.
The study measures customer satisfaction with both interior
paint brands and the retailers where the paint was purchased.
Satisfaction with paint brands is based on evaluations from
customers who purchased and applied interior paint during
the past year, and is measured in six key factors of the painting
experience: application, product offerings, durability, price, design guides and warranty/guarantee. Satisfaction with retailers
is measured across five key factors of the paint shopping and
purchasing experience: facility, selection, staff, services provided
and sales/promotions.
Application continues to be the most important driver of
satisfaction with paint brands at 25 percent. Satisfaction with
retailers is driven primarily by store staff (27% ).
With 83 percent of customers reporting applying the paint
themselves, it is not surprising that customers are more likely to
be satisfied and achieve their desired results when they are able
to talk to a professional about their painting project and get the
advice they need, said Christina Cooley, director of the home
improvement industries practice at J.D. Power and Associates.
The challenge for retailers is to make sure they have the staff
available and support their associates with training to help their
customers be successful in their projects.

Interior Paint Brand Satisfaction Rankings

Overall customer satisfaction with interior paint brands averages 779 (on a 1,000-point scale) in 2013, an increase of 3 points
from 2012. Benjamin Moore ranks highest for a third consecutive
year, with a score of 800, which is a 10-point increase from 2012.
Benjamin Moore performs particularly well in four of the six factors: application, durability, product offerings and design guides.
Following Benjamin Moore in the paint brand rankings is
Sherwin-Williams (790), achieving the highest score in warranty
guarantee, and BEHR (788), achieving the highest score in price.

Interior Paint Retailer Satisfaction Rankings

Sherwin-Williams ranks highest among paint retailers with
a score of 820 and performs particularly well in three of the
five factors: services provided, staff and selection. Following
Sherwin-Williams in the rankings are Ace Hardware (801),
achieving the highest score for facility, and Menards (786),
which achieves the highest score in sales/promotions. The
overall customer satisfaction average with interior paint retailers is 782.

U.S. Demand for

Green Building
Materials to Reach
$86.6 Billion in 2017

Through 2017, a rebound in construction

activity will propel growth in green building materials demand 11 percent annually to $86.6 billion. In addition to the lift
supplied by general construction activity,
continuing consumer interest in environmentally friendly products will increase
the market share of most green building
materials relative to non-green alternatives.
Growth in residential construction will promote base demand for such products as carpeting, gypsum board, concrete, and metal
building products, while products that contribute to the earning of LEED certification
will see an additional boost in sales. These
and other trends are presented in Green
Building Materials, a new study from The
Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based
industry market research firm.
Over the forecast period, builders and
architects will increasingly opt to earn high
levels of LEED certification by specifying
the use of materials that earn LEED points.
Residential HVAC systems, concrete made
with fly ash, and lumber harvested in a
sustainable manner can all contribute to
LEED certification, and all are forecast to
see above-average gains in demand.
Solar power products saw explosive
growth between 2002 and 2012, driven
by increasing installation of rooftopbased solar power modules connected to
electricity distribution systems. Going
forward, favorable tax incentives and
strong interest in the use of renewable
energy sources will promote demand for
LEED-eligible solar power products.
Green building products such as recycled concrete, ENERGY STAR-compliant
HVAC systems, and permeable pavement
are forecast to see substantial gains through
2017. Recycled concrete will see rising use,
as concrete made with fly ash and other
additives features superior performance
properties and is less costly than concrete
made solely from cement and aggregates.
Demand for green building systems will be
spurred by strong residential demand for
ENERGY STAR-compliant HVAC systems
that lower utility bills. Permeable pavement demand will be supported by interest

in reducing water runoff and minimizing

strains on older sewer and water systems.

U.S. Demand for Adhesives

and Sealants to Reach 9.8
Billion Pounds in 2017
According to a new report from the
Freedonia Group, U.S. demand for adhesives and sealants will rise 2.2 percent per
year to 9.8 billion pounds in 2017, valued
at $11.9 billion. Gains will be driven by
an improved outlook for major adhesives

16 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

and sealants markets such as paper packaging, motor vehicles, and building construction, following the recession-plagued
2007-2012 period. Demand will also
benefit from trends toward greater use
of adhesive bonding compared to alternative joining technologies, such as mechanical fasteners, in product assembly
applications. However, advances will be
limited by trends toward high solids formulations and lower application weights,
which will reduce the total volume of
adhesives and sealants consumed, and by
market maturity and sluggish growth in
a number of key applications. These and
other trends are presented in Adhesives &
Sealants, a new study from The Freedonia
Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry
market research firm.
Natural adhesives and sealants will
remain the largest product type through
2017, accounting for nearly 40 percent
of demand by weight. However, natural
products will also see the weakest gains
going forward, as the bulk of demand
consists of low value starch adhesives
used in corrugated cardboard production, a highly mature and slow growing
application. The most rapid advances
are expected for reactive adhesives and
sealants, fueled by the rebounding manufacturing market, as well as by product
substitution trends toward higher value
materials. Hot melts will also see healthy
gains, as their amenability to fast processing speeds will promote opportunities in
the packaging market, while their lack of
volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions will continue to make hot melts an
environmentally preferable option.
Despite decades of losing share to alternative formulations, solvent-based adhesives and sealants will see above average
increases in demand, bolstered by a turnaround in the construction sector and product reformulation efforts to lower VOC
emissions. More moderate gains for emulsion and dispersion adhesives and sealants
will stem from market maturity and competition from hot melts in leading outlets
such as case and carton sealing. However,
ongoing development of better performing
water-based formulations will allow emulsion adhesives and sealants to penetrate
new markets going forward. CW

Coatings Companies Shift Strategy

From Products to Market Segments

European

solutions for
particular
categories of
customers.

growing trend among industrial companies is to develop strategies for giving priority to specific customer sectors
rather than types of products.
European companies offering both coatings
and speciality chemicals have been becoming
more inclined to bundle products together to
provide broad solutions for particular categories of customers.
This shift in objectives could lead to longterm changes in the way coatings are marketed
and the primacy they are given in areas like capital investment and allocation of R&D funds.
Coatings are becoming part of a systems
approach to the market with products being
grouped by the ability of their technologies

18 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

and functions to complement each other. The

branding of the coating is being based on its
identity within a total solution rather than as a
stand-along item.
As part of an objective to focus more intensely on customer industries, BASF has been
reshaping its strategy in the construction sector
where is already selling coatings in packages
with construction chemicals.
At the European Coatings Show in
Nuremberg, Germany, in March, which now
also covers construction chemicals, adhesives and sealants, it launched a global brand
called Master Builders Solutions. Its main aim
will be promote the companys construction
chemicals portfolio but the solutions being
marketed under the brand will also include
coatings products.
In April it introduced a website on sustainability in construction which features not just
insulation materials, concrete admixtures,
May 2013

waterproofing systems and other chemical products but also decorative paints
and architectural and coil coatings.
This is in line with the companys
policy of linking its expertise in chemistry with the tackling of key challenges
like sustainability, which Tilman Krauch,
president of BASFs construction chemicals division, points out is a crucial issue
for the construction industry.
The construction sector, which accounted for 5.2 billion ($6.8 billion) in sales last
year, or approximately 10 percent of total
group revenue, also presents big opportunities for growth in coatings applications.
The global roll-out of the new brand
has started in Asia. But Master Builders
Solutions is already registered in the
European Union as a trade mark embracing chemicals, paints and coatings and
non-metallic building materials.
BASF currently has a number of
brands for coatings products with the
Master tag, including some marketed by
the construction chemicals business.
One of these is the industrial coatings and waterproofing range called
Masterseal which is mainly used for the
protection and repair of concrete and masonry structures.
The range was featured on the BASF
stand at the Turkeybuild exhibition in
Istanbul in April as providing solutions for
restoring the structures and infrastructure of industrial facilities where damage
has been caused by physical, chemical, or
biological means, says the company.
AkzoNobel is another European coatings and speciality chemicals multinational which has been modifying its strategy
so that it concentrates less on products
per se and more on specific segments.
The company has decided to focus on
four key end-user segments buildings
and infrastructure, transportation, consumer goods and industrial sectors like
oil and gas.
Of the four, transportation, covering OEM and auto refinishing, marine and aerospace, is a sector in which
AkzoNobels sales predominantly comprise coatings. But in the other three
there is a more of an even mix between
coatings and speciality chemicals. For the
company, building and infrastructure is

its biggest segment, representing 43 percent of revenue last year.

The segmentation strategy will provide a basis for improvements in the companys financial performance, particularly
with returns on sales and investment. It
will help marketing and R&D planning.
A clear end-user segment focus
provides
forward-looking indicators
and direction for our market initiatives
and innovation spend, Keith Nichols,
AkzoNobels chief financial officer, told a
recent analysts meeting.

This shift in
objective could
lead to long-term
changes in the way
coatings are marketd
and the primacy
they are given in
areas like capital
investement funds.
The company sees it as being particularly useful in the way it plans its expansion in the high-growth regional markets,
especially in China and the rest of developing Asia.
Out of the companys three business
areas of decorative paints, performance
coatings and speciality coatings, which last
year accounted for 27 percent, 37 percent
and 36 percent respectively of total revenue of 15.billion ($19.5 billion), the
new segmented approach would appear to
favour performance coatings and speciality chemicals. Their sales are fairly equally
spread between the four segments.
With transportation, performance
coatings has automotive, aerospace and
marine coatings while speciality chemicals
has chlor-akali derivatives, organic peroxides and metal alkyls. In consumer goods,

May 2013 www.coatingsworld.com

the performance business offers powder

and packaging coatings and wood and
plastic finishes and speciality chemicals
provide surfactants, polymers and silicas.
In the industrial sector protective
coatings supplies protective and powder coatings, which can complement the
companys surface chemicals and speciality polymers. The protective coatings
operation provides to the buildings and
infrastructure segment protective, coil
and powder coatings and wood finishes
while speciality chemicals offers redispersable powders, cellulosic derivatives
and surfactants.
However, with decorative paints,
buildings and infrastructure is the only
one of the segment it supplies, although
two key parts of itnew build projects
and maintenance, renovation and repair.
Furthermore, decorative paints, whose
restructuring in Europe necessitated an
impairment payment of 2.1 billion in
the third quarter of last year, is under
the greatest pressure to raise its financial
performance. Excluding the recently divested North American decorative paints
operation, the business recorded in 2012
a return on sales of 2.2 percent and a return on investment of 3 percent.
Under the AkzoNobels new financial
targets, decorative paints is expected to
achieve by 2015 a returns on sales and investment of 7.5 percent and 12 percent
respectively. With performance coatings
the targets are 12 percent and 25 percent
respectively against 9.5 percent 22 percent
last year while with speciality chemicals
they are 12 percent and 15 percent against
9 percent and 14 percent last year.
Underpinning AkzoNobels new strategy is a drive toward sustainability across
all customers sectors. Sustainability is
business (and) business is sustainability.
said Nichols, explaining that by 2020 approximately 20 percent of the companys
revenues are expected to come from
downstream eco-premium solutions.
Inevitably when helping customers
meet sustainability objectives is a top priority, multinationals like AkzoNobel and
BASF will want to combine the strengths
of the whole portfolio of their chemicals
and coatings and other products to meet
their objectives. CW

Mexicos UV Stabilizer Demand Rises

by Charles W. Thurston
Latin America Correspondent

exicos demand for ultraviolet

light stabilizers is increasing
thanks largely to a growing
demand from the wood coatings industry, as well as from other industry uses.
The UV market in Mexico has been
rising steadily for the past eight years,
said Ivn Pelayo, the manager of the industrial division of Valresa Mxico S.A.
de C.V., in Tlaquepaque, in Jalisco state,
one of the top 10 paint manufacturers in
the county. Jalisco state hosts the largest
national association for wood furniture
manufacturers in Mexico, the Asociacion
de Fabricantes de Muebles de Jalisco.
A recent study by Transparency
Market Research, based in Albany, New
York, indicates that, Mexico is...expected to be the fastest growing market
for UV light stabilizers in the (North
America) region and it is estimated to
grow at a compounded annual growth
rate of 6.6 percent from 2012 to 2018.
Presently, Mexico is relatively an underdeveloped market for wood coatings,
the Transparency Market study indicates.
Mexico is one of the top five exporters of
furniture to the U.S., though it is losing
market share to China; the U.S. market
absorbs about 90 percent of Mexican
furniture exports, according to a 2009
study by Lidia Martnez Murillo, then
a PHD candidate at Leipzig University.
Overall, Mexico exports 42 percent of its
furniture, for revenues of approximately
$6 billion, with wood products representing approximately 70 percent of all
furniture produced, according to a 2009
study by Malaysias Mexico City trade
office. Malaysia supplies furniture to the
Mexican market.
Major players in Mexicos wood coatings market include Comex, recently acquired by Sherwin-Williams. Comex and

Brazil-based Renner Sayerlack formed

a joint venture in 2009 in Mexico City
to serve the Mexican furniture coatings
industry, then estimated at $170 million.
Renner Sayerlack claims to be the largest and most specialized wood coatings
company in Latin America.
Sherwin-Williams is now the largest paint company in Mexico, including
Comex 3,000-plus points of sale across
the country. Such broad domestic distribution is key to serving the Mexican furniture industry, which includes some 1,100
manufacturers, mostly small businesses.
The Malaysian study suggests that close
to 500 of these manufacturers are located
along the U.S.-Mexico border in the socalled Maquiladora belt. Among its UV
wood coatings products, Sherwin Williams
DeckScapes
Advanced
Waterborne
Transparent Stain claims to offer threeway UV protection for wood by absorbing,
blocking and stabilizing the wood fibers.
Among other multinationals serving the Mexican market is BASF, which
produces UV stabilizers at McIntosh,

20 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

Alabama, a source point for Mexican

consumption as well as other global
points, said Beth Earnst, a company
spokesperson in Charlotte. BASFs
main product families produced at
McIntosh are Tinuvins and hindered
amine light stabilizers, or HALS, used
in wood finishes and automotive applications. The company introduced
its Tinuvin 5333-DW at the European
Coatings Show; the product was hailed
as the first water-compatible blend of
high performance UV-absorber and
non-interacting HALS specifically developed for water-based coatings.
Other smaller players in the Mexico
UV wood coatings market utilize outside
sales representatives or corporate sales
teams. Ukiah, California-based Penofin,
for example, markets its UV wood sealers
in Mexico through two outside dealers.
And Valspar Aries Coatings, which operates a coil coatings manufacturing facility
in Monterrey, as well as a color and design center, produces UV stabilizers primarily in Asian now. CW

Road Construction Fuels Growth

of Traffic Safety Solutions in Kenya
by Shem Oirere
Africa Correspondent

aint and coatings players in Eastern

Africas largest economy, Kenya,
have woken up to more business
opportunities in recent months after the
country embarked on a rapid road expansion and improvement program to
accommodate increasing cargo and passenger traffic volumes and improve safety
on the roads.
Construction of new roads, expanding
existing ones and improving the status of
other road signage has triggered an expansion in the manufacture of appropriate traffic safety solutions such as road
marking paints, road studs, pavement
markers and new partnerships to achieve
quality and safer roads.
In addition, extending of the road network by the Ministry of Roads has also
opened a new window for the supply of
road markings equipment.
Kenya, with 93 percent of cargo
and passenger traffic relying on road
transport, has a road network of more
than 160,800 kilometers long. This includes 16,544 kilometers of National
Roads, managed by the Kenya National
Highways Authority; 12,549 kilometers
of urban roads under the Kenya Urban
Roads Authority; and an estimated
131,794 km of rural roads under Kenya
Rural Roads Authority.
The road network has approximately
61,936 kilometers, which are classified
and 98,950 kilometers, which remain
unclassified.
Several agencies under the Ministry
of Roads are undertaking the road
construction and improvement program with funding from national government and donors.
The Kenya National Highways
Authority (KeNHA), which manages,
develops, rehabilitates and maintains

national roads, has the largest share of

the highways that have either gotten a
brush of the road marking paints or are
in the process of being marked.
The state-agency has just finalized
the road marking of an estimated 476
kilometers of roads across the country with hot thermoplastic, a project
financed by revenues from the Road
Maintenance Levy Fund, managed by
another state-agency, Kenya Roads
Board. KeNHA has also installed reflective studs on the highways.
One of the landmark projects by
KeNHA, is the 52-kilometer Thika
Superhighway linking Kenyas capital
Nairobi to the satellite town of Thika
and which is financed by the African
Development Bank, the government of
Kenya and Exim Bank of China. The
$330 million highway is part of the larger

22 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

Nairobi-Addis Ababa Highway, which

is a section of the Trans Africa Highway
running from Cape Town in South Africa
to Cairo in Egypt.
In addition to installation of gantry road signs, flexi-beam guard rails,
KeNHA has also deployed world class
road markings to enhance road safety.
The completed eight lane superhighway which is the first of its kind in East
and Central Africa, took 42 months to
be constructed to its current magnificent
status, said KeNHA in a previous project briefing.
In the current financial year, the government has unveiled a $1.4 billion
(Sh124 billion) road expansion plan,
which is up from the previous years $1.2
billion (Sh104.3 billion.) Several projects
have been identified and earmarked for
completion by 2015.

We are continuing to improve the
general conditions of our highways, urban and rural roads, said outgoing finance minister Njeru Githae.
Several factors are driving the expansion and improvement of the road
network in Kenya, key among them
being the creation of a conducive investment environment and reduction
of poverty levels in this country of 40
million people.
Furthermore, the government has
been keen on reducing road accidents,
which currently kill an estimated 3,000
people every year. To improve road safety, paved roads are being marked with
thermoplastic road marking paint while
well-marked studs now dominate the
unpaved roads.
Kenya police traffic department report an estimated 3,000 people die
every year in road accidents. The departments head, Benson Kibui, said in
2012, at least 3,097 people were killed
in road accidents, a slight fall from
3,249 the previous year.
Paint makers are seeking out ways
of meeting the demand created by this
road expansion spree. Eastern Africas
two market leaders in the paints and
coatings industry Basco Paints and
Crown Paints have grabbed the opportunity provided by the increasing
investment in the road sector to launch
and expand supply of thermoplastic
road marking paint.
Already Basco Paints is executing a
deal with global traffic safety solutions
provider Ennis Prismo for the distribution
of the latter firms road marking paint.
Basco has the exclusive right to distribute U.K.-based Ennis Prismos thermoplastic paint in Kenya.
The introduction of Ennis Prismo
road marking paints is a great value
addition to the Kenyan road industry, said Basco Paints CEO Kamlesh
Shah. The thermoplastic paints offer
better reliability, visibility at night and
lasts between two to three years compared to the six months of other road
markings.
Most of the accidents on the roads
are caused by poor markings and road
signs that confuse drivers leading them

to make mistakes, said outgoing

Roads Minister Franklin Bett. Future
road markings feature reflective road
studs that improve road visibility especially at night.
Ennis Prismo said contractors using its
products should be assured of the quality of the paint and durability was suitable for the Kenyan market.
The U.K.-based company, one of the
worlds largest road products manufacturers with over 100 years experience in the industry, manufacturers
road marking products, traffic products, decorated surfacing and surface
safety solutions.
Ennis Prismo Thermoplastic road
marking paint is a new generation highway marking system, preferred the world
over, for its ease of usage and extended
life cycle as compared to other thermoplastic and conventional solvent based
paints, said Shah.
According to a previous statement by
Basco, the traffic safety solution by Ennis
Prismo is developed on performancebased benchmarks and is manufactured
under the code BSEN 1436. It was introduced 20 years ago after the BS3262,
which is a recipe-based road marking
paint, was discontinued.
The profile of Prismos thermoplastic road marking includes that of having superior features such as durability,
retro-reflectivity (visibility at night), flow
resistance (ability not to melt when in
high temperatures) and non-cracking
abilities just to mention a few. In addition, they are guaranteed to last for a
minimum of 2-3 years as opposed to current road markings that fade away after
as little as 6 months.
Ennis Prismo Thermoplastic road
marking paint can be done in three
ways; extrusion, spraying or screed
(hand pram). According to Shah, the
paints will be available alongside the
Stimsonite Road Studs also manufactured by Ennis Prismo and one of the
best road marking studs manufactured.
Research has proved that road marking goes a long way in increasing road
safety on roads and is an indispensable
part of road construction as opposed
to an optional component.

May 2013 www.coatingsworld.com

According to another leading supplier of thermoplastic road marking

paint in Kenya, Crown Berger Limited,
the material is a formulation of plasticized resin, aggregate, pigment and
glass beads supplied in powder form.
Thermoline is heated and applied to the
road surface where it rapidly cools and
sets. The material consists of 100% solids and is environmentally friendly as it
is solvent free.
Thermoline has unique characteristics, Crown Berger explained, such
as being manufactured from synthetic
resin in combination with pigment,
extenders and retro-reflective glass
beads. It is high retro-reflective performance, visibility and provide less traffic disruption during application and is
fast drying.
The paint product has been made
to fit the unique physical and environmental conditions prevailing in a
region like Eastern Africa and particularly Kenya.
For example, it combines titanium
dioxide for ultra white visibility and
durable chromes for bright yellow lines
with extending pigments for uniform
coloring throughout the coated surface,
Crown Berger explained. The material
also has plasticized hydrocarbon resin
for adaptability to extreme tropical climatic conditions, thermal stability and
weather ability.
Crown Berger said the use of spherical glass beads in making of thermoplastic road marking paint is critical in
ensuring provision of exceptional reflectivity and visibility both during the
day and night.
Thermolines composition enables
it to withstand Kenyas wide variations
in climatic and surface conditions, outlasting others, the paint maker said.
Road safety has also been enhanced
by the embedded glass beads, which,
according to the company, make for
a reflecting surface that makes road
marking many times more visible, especially in darkness, enhancing road
safety. Thermolines high concentration of aggregates resists skidding, in
contrast with conventional marking
paints, the company added. CW

Keys to Successful Consulting

Individual
consultants
range along a
continuum in
talent and training
from none to a
distinguished
amount.

by Phil Phillips, PhD

Contributing Editor
phillips@chemarkconsulting.net

We hate them but we love them! This

is often said of consultants in general yet
over $100 billion dollars were spent globally on consultants in 2012.
Individual consultants range along a continuum in talent and training from none to a
distinguished amount. From a person who feels
they have a unique specialty or connection and
has the impression he/she has a consultative
value in a market place, to an individual who
occupies the other extreme as a highly educated
well-trained individual in consultative methodology and behavior background.
The consultative road to success is littered
with the former individuals who may very well
have talent and a unique set of experiences, but
fail because consulting looks easy and the basics of marketing ones self, goes missing.
How many persons do you know who, because
they lost their job through downsizing or took early retirement, decide to become a consultant?
As consultants, one of the elements we always
measure for our own clients when considering adjacent or new markets for them to enter is . . . how
high are the barriers to market entrance? The consulting industry has no barriers to entrance. There
are no pre-qualifying degrees, licenses or apprenticeships one has to consider and become qualified when entering the consulting arena.

24 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

Therefore, anyone can become a consultant. One simply has to declare . . . I am a

CONSULTANT.
The keys to successful consulting are:
Timing of entrance; type and relative uniqueness of offerings; strength of potential client
contacts; financial sustainability; personal communication skills; and marketing prowess.
Timing: The best time to enter consulting is
obviously in the best economic environments.
The fundamental reasons are three:
Fewer unemployed, would-be consultants
exist with which to complete
The backdrop of a solid economy alone
can carry new entrants a long way
As a new consultant, one can make mistakes and still achieve positive market
penetration.
Type and relative uniqueness of offerings:
There are four typical offerings in consulting:
General management Usually ex-top
management feels comfortable consulting with other top management as clients.
The percentage of successful new entrants
in this category has been studied and the
range is between 20% and 35% sustainable associated success rates.
Market research As consultants, engineers, chemists, accountants, feel comfortable working behind the scenes and can
usually perform very well. Sometimes, however, they may have difficulty in marketing

themselves and need others (implants) for successful marketing.
Technical Innovators and design persons may possess unique offerings but
they too may need personnel marketing skill implants to be successful.
Combinations usually combinations are successful in multi-person
organization and not embodied in
one single individual.
Strength of potential client contacts: If
one does not have viable and multiple
contacts in the segments chosen to consultant within, failure is predictable. The
only method to succeed is to hire people
who do have those targeted contacts.
Financial
sustainability:
In
the
Consultants Library, Herman Holtz
warns potential consultants about underestimating the initial costs associated
with launching a career in this profession.
Holtz basic message was:
Have two years salary saved
Develop a strategic business plan
that includes a detailed client target

remuneration objective; expenses associated with each client; office and

clerical expenses, etc.
Secure 1-2 years cost saving to
launch the above plan.
Gain financial advice from successful consultants regarding how you
should value your services.
Personal communication skills: We
know several excellent consultants
who have zero ability to communicate
well but they succeed because they recognize their weakness and created a
mouthpiece in the form of a communications expert.
Marketing prowess: Marketing covers a
lot of ground in its definition. Marketing
is the process of communicating the value
of a product or service to customers. It
is a critical business function for attracting customers. Marketing is the science
of choosing target markets through market analysis and market segmentation, as
well as understanding consumer buying
behavior and providing superior customer value. Source: Wikipedia

May 2013 www.coatingsworld.com

One of the most significant weaknesses new consultants possess is the

understanding and implementation
of a marketing plan.
A marketing plan is a roadmap
with activities that assists in goal
achievement.
Someone said a long time ago, If
you dont know where youre going,
any path will get you there.
No invention, business model or talent will be a success unless the right
decision-makers (clients) within the
targeted markets fully understands
and appreciates its value in terms of
what the offering will potentially do
for them
Below is a simple roadmap depicting the location of the clients value
appreciation. The value is in the end of
the process.
Within the clients mindset, value is
at its zenith when the client feels more
capable & confident, in addition to the
organization becoming self-sufficient as
performance improves . . . . far better than
before the consultant was involved. CW

Aerospace
Coatings Market
Aerospace coatings manufacturers continue to support the needs of their customers by
developing ways to improve service, efficiency and reduce costs.
Kerry Pianoforte, Editor

here are a number of factors driving the market for

aerospace coatings. Airline mergers, the continuing development of lower VOC and environmentally friendly
coatings and the quest for more increased efficiencies are some
of the key drivers mentioned by aerospace coating manufacturers Coatings World interviewed.
As more and more airlines merge and rebrand their
liveries, there is an increased need to repaint their
fleets. Airline mergers and changes in business models will continue to be core aerospace industry drivers,
said Vincent van der Laan, global marketing specialist,
AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings. As airlines review their

costs and reorganize, often merging to give greater critical

mass in which to face todays challenges, this will create a
demand for re-liveries and rebranding, which in turn leads to
a demand for more coatings as fleets are repainted.
Airline mergers are particularly interesting to the aerospace coatings supply base as aircraft are usually repainted
in one airline livery, or sometimes a brand new livery combining the markings of both merging airlines, agreed Mark
Cancilla, global platform director Aerospace Coatings, PPG
Aerospace. This also provides an opportunity for aerospace
coatings suppliers to offer new colors and effects as the airlines
rebrand their identity.

Aerospace Coatings Market FEATURE

Increased Demand
AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings reports that the aerospace industry is
growing year on year. The company
noted that the Asia Pacific region is
leading growth.
The developing markets in Asia
Pacific are leading to a strong growth
in demand from people who want to
fly and this in turn leads to a demand
for more aircraft, said van der Laan.
Depending on whose forecast you
take note of, there will be a demand for
an additional 30,000 new aircraft over
the next 20 years. A number of these
will be replacements for older aircraft
but the majority will be new aircraft to
cope with the increased demand from
the market. A consequence of all this
is that we see an increase in demand
for our products. Recent launches of
products such as the reliable Aerobase
and Aerodur Base Coat/Clear Coat
systems and the environmentally progressive chrome-free surface pretreatment Metaflex SP 1050, have helped to
drive the demand as the performance
of these systems have produced proven
benefits to users.
The need for more efficient and
cost saving products is also a driver of
growth. As the global aviation market
continues to grow along with global
wealth, the aerospace coatings business
grows with this market, said Cancilla.
Further, aerospace coatings products
play an important role in the continuous improvement of aircraft efficiencies.
PPG is launching our Aerocron electrocoat process and products, which have
shown to improve the application consistency of primer systems, reducing the
overall weight of the coatings applied.
Further, the industry is moving toward
basecoat, clearcoat topcoat systems,
which improve the overall weight and
service life of the coatings on aircraft.
Lastly, PPG has developed new, green
solutions replacing chromated products including our new Desoprime CF/
CA7502 chrome free primer systems.
As these new products are launched,
demand to replace antiquated technologies increases.
The aerospace coatings market is

highly competitive and customers demand the most innovative products that
will meet stringent safety standards and
increase efficiencies.
With fuel costs contributing to approximately a third of airlines operating
costs, airlines need to look where they
can save money. One way to increase

efficiencies is to try and save weight. This

can be done by reducing the number of
layers of paint on an aircraft.
Each layer saved means less weight
carried and we expect that a recent approval of a Direct to Metal (DTM)
system to AMS 3095A means that airline customers can save considerable

weight compared to a typical wash primer scheme, said
van der Laan.
A second driver is time saving during the paint process.
Basically get the aircraft in and out of the paint shop
quicker so that it can get back to creating revenue for the
airline, said van der Laan. Of course all this comes with
an increased paint performance and longer lasting, more
durable topcoats like with the Aerobase and Aerodur Base
Coat/Clear Coat systems.
Airlines are looking for longevity of the livery brand image.
The livery and interior of the aircraft play an integral role in
shaping an airlines brand image.
AkzoNobels reliable base coat/clear coat systems
maintain the worldwide brand integrity of airlines by getting the color mix exactly right and by keeping colors right
by the protection of the clearcoat, said van der Laan.
Environmental and health regulation and in particular
the demand for chrome-free technology is another industry driver. In 2012 we had the first application of a totally
chrome-free system and expect AMS 3095A qualification
for this system anytime soon.
Accordng to Cancilla, PPGs customers continue to drive
innovation toward reduced weight, faster application times
for coatings, longer service life and increased functionality. The Aerocron product can be consistently applied
with uniform, thin film layers, contributing to the weight
reduction of the overall aircraft components being coated,
he added. Also, our Desothane HD basecoat clearcoat

products permit the topcoat systems application to be accomplished in a faster time frame, minimizing the time out
of service while enhancing the durability of the gloss level of
the coated aircraft. Finally, our customers are recognizing
that functionality can be designed into aerospace coatings
system including the ability of the coating to reduce heat
load onto the aircraft, improve the ability of the skin to
minimize the accumulation of ice, and to improve the drag
resistance of the aircraft. All of these key factors are considered in PPGs innovation pipeline for aerospace coatings.
Recently, PPG Aerospace Coatings has launched its
Desothane HD basecoat clearcoat products into the aftermarket segment of the industry. We have received qualifications to the AMS 3095A specification from independent
laboratories for several systems that include this technology, said Cancilla. We have also launched our chrome
free Desoprime CF/CA7502 primer systems. These have
been qualified to both OEM and the AMS 3095A specifications. Recently, PPG proudly announced our new Andaro
technology used to enhance the new livery of Virgin
Atlantic aircraft.
AkzoNobel is the first in the market with an AMS
3095A qualified Direct to Metal (DTM) system, composed
of Aerodur LV 2114 primer and Aerobase Base Coat/Clear
Coat. This system eliminates the need to use any kind of
metal pre-treatment such as Alodine, Solgel or Wash primer technologies. The primer is applied directly to the clean
scotch-brited substrate and provides the necessary adhesion

PPG to Acquire Deft

PPG Industries recently reached an agreement to acquire certain assets of Deft Incorporated, a privately-owned specialty coatings company based in Irvine, California. Defts primary business is supplying structural primers and military topcoats to the
North American aviation industry, and it has smaller architectural and industrial coatings businesses.
Acquiring Deft will advance PPGs strategy to remain a leading aerospace coatings supplier, said Barry Gillespie, PPG vice
president, aerospace. Defts waterborne and chrome-free technologies complement PPGs existing coatings capabilities and
will provide PPG with a broader product portfolio, particularly within the aerospace industry.
Gillespie added, The aviation industry continues to drive toward improved environmentally sustainable solutions, and
both PPG and Deft have long histories of developing technologies that support this trend. Defts green coating systems support PPGs ongoing commitment to sustainability, and we will be able to offer an even wider selection of innovative coatings
that benefit our customers and lessen the impact on the environment.

and corrosion resistance to meet the stringent specification
requirements. The DTM paint system eliminates mixed fleed
complexities and can be applied on any type of commercial

The system also provides easy stripability.
After the successful market introduction in EMEA, we
recently launched our Aerofine range of aircraft interior
coatings in the Americas as well, said van der Lann. The

water-based Aerofine products are created for the maintenance and refurbishment of aircraft internal cabin surfaces.
The brand represents consistent durability, ease of application and reliable performance at a fair price.
With both the environmentally progressive cabin coatings and aircraft exterior coatings we can now offer our
customers a one stop paint solution for aircraft interior and

o you are ready to paint your house, and are interested

in checking out the hot colors. Reading the predictions
from the color experts at many of the leading paint and
coatings companies, it seems that a person could pretty much
pick any color and be right.
From metallics and earth tones to greens, blues and yellows,
experts say there are colors for everyone.
For 2013, AkzoNobel selected Indigo Night, a rich blue shade
that the company said suggests maturity and elegance.
Indigo Night is a stunning color that can be applied to
many areas within the home, said Barbara Richardson, director of North American color marketing for AkzoNobel, makers of Glidden paint. So much of our lives are touched by the
global community leading to our desire to connect and communicate; blue is a true communication color. Intense hues, like
indigo, reflect stability, reassuring confidence of the world that
lies ahead.
AkzoNobels ColourFutures book noted five key trends:
Collective Passion: Attention-grabbing pastels that are
combined with chalk whites and warm grey.
Switching Off: Silent colors and ethereal hues.

30 | Coatings World

The Art of Understanding: Sunny and uplifting, such as

vintage-inspired candy tones with laid back neutrals.
Home Factory: Natural colors such as bright greens, warm
burnt orange indigo tones.
Visual Solace: A gentle, feminine color palette.
Sherwin-Williams color of the year is Aloe, a soothing pastel
shade the company says is reminiscent of the relaxing sense of a spa.
Aloe is highly adaptable, making it a perfect pick for everyday spaces such as a breezy sunroom or a well-dressed living room, said Jackie Jordan, Sherwin-Williams director of
color marketing.
As for its key trends, Sherwin-Williams offers Midnight
Mystery, featuring moody colors; Honed Vitality, with chalky
and earthy colors; Vintage Moxie, with bolder pastels and semiprecious gem tones; High Voltage; and Opposites Attract.
For Benjamin Moore, pastels are the hottest trend for 2013,
with Lemon Sorbet 2019-60 the number one shade.
The palette is shifting from super saturated and strong hues
to softer, lighter pastel shades, said Sonu Mathew, Benjamin
Moores senior interior designer.

Color Trends FEATURE

As for Lemon Sorbet, Its the ideal transition color as we
move from the more vibrant spectrum and mid-to-deep tone
hues that weve been experiencing in home furnishings and fashions, Mathew added.
Founded in 1989 by Rohm and Haas, which is now part of
Dow Chemical, the Paint Quality Institute (PQI)offers insights
into the world of color. This year, Debbie Zimmer, PQIs director
of communications and alliances, says that greens and blues will
be popular choices for interiors.
If youre into whats in when it comes to interior paint colors, just look outside in 2013,Zimmer said. The greens and
blues that characterize the world outdoors are the same hues
that will be popular when beautifying our living spaces this year.
Its fitting that green is expected to be one of the top paint colors used to refresh and renew the interiors of homes and buildings,
Zimmer added. Green has always been symbolic of new life. Only
now, it will be giving new life to tired interiors. Then there are the
greens that gravitate toward blue, which just happens to be projected
as the other popular paint color this year. Bluish-greens like teal, turquoise, aquamarine and cyan are expected to be hot designer choices.
Valspar Paint has developed three color trend palettes for
2013:Simple Delights, Gathered Stories and Electro Noir.
Simple Delights features soft and sophisticated lights. Gathered
Stories includes, warm, grounded and comforting colors. Electro
Noir includes cool metal tones with rich earthen elements.

As we move into 2013, we overcome our fear of uncertainty

and need for control by pursuing happiness within our home
life. While going through economic downturn, we turned back
toward the home as a safe haven, said Sue Kim, Valspar color
strategist. The Valspar 2013 trend palettes show that our home
is ready to break out of its own cocoon and we are ready to start
dreaming in color again, inviting the transformative power in
color into our lives.
BASFbreaks down color trends by region. For example, for
Asia Pacific, BASFis pointing toward Scent (the scent of ones
homeland), rich colors such as red, gold-based colors and nature
color such as brown and olive. In North America, the trend is
COPE, or dealing with challenges in a sincere manner, which
BASFcategories as visually stable colors with low color saturation. For Europe, the trend is toward PLY, or multiple layers,
with the emphasis on dark colors as well as contrasting colors.
Behr Paints 2013 Color Trends were diverse in their own
right, with four home decor themes and 20 original colors, ranging the gamut from bold to natural.
Behrs 2013 Color Trend palettes help consumers express
themselves through color, said Erika Woelfel, director of color
marketing for Behr Paints. Whether consumers are interior
design divas or redecorating rookies, these trends help channel self-expression to create home dcor that realizes all of the
drama, liveliness or ingenuity they envision.

bright magenta walls or adding black
borders. These include Daah-ling,
Empire Porcelain, Black Lacquer,
Golden Age and Belladonna.
Color Metric: Cool, modern tones

and geometric elements. One idea

from Behr is neutral gray walls with
bright blue cabinets.Drak plum is
another choice. The five new offerings are Twilight, Tan-gent, Matrix,
Electrify and Plum Orbit.
Sweet Jazz: A retro and art deco
theme with feminine colors. For
example, Behr suggests pastel jade

and light pink, combined with dark

navy trim. These colors include Bees
Knees, Jazzy Jade, Flapper Dance,
Heavy Sugar and Shanghai Peach.
Aprs Ski: Cozy, woodsy trend
complete with lived-in comfort. For
example, forest green showcases natural wood and rustic materials. The
five new shades are Pine Cone Pass,
Timber Town, Ski Patrol, Gnome
Green and Folk Song.
PPG Industries said that for 20132014, people can anticipate more color
and more individual expression. PPGnoted five trends:
Every Day Hero: A low-key, functional aesthetic, with soft and desaturated
hues, such as Ginger Root, Chaps,
Light Sage, Cream Puff and Whippet.
Illusion: A theme that balances
dark and dramatic designs, with a
color palette that is mixes dark and
delicate, including Rose Marquis,
French Riviera, Spice Cookie, Black
Magic and Gypsum.
Discreet Luxury: Contemporary
design that combines rich reddishbrowns with rich blues and pale
blues and greys, as well as mixed metallics. These colors include Copper
Beech, Warm Mahogany, Blue Fjord,
Gray Marble and Blue Beard.
Artful Expression: This theme is
loaded with intense hues, with vibrant mid-tones and bright colors
from the full spectrum working in
powerful combinations. Among
these colors are Cinnamon Stone,
Willow Herb, Indian Maize, Copper
Kettle and Macaroon Cream.
Modernist Tech: Modernist Tech is
described as cool and precise without
feeling cold, and includes blocks of
black and white against almost-primary hues. These colors include Sun
Shower, Newport Blue, Red Gumball,
Silver Sword and Atrium White.
Color is ultimately a personal choice,
and these listings are by no means the
final authority in the matter. This is
meant to be a starting point in their
color selection process, Mathew concluded. CW

New Ross Double Planetary Mixer

with Special Finger Blades

Charles Ross and Son has introduced a

new agitator blade design for their line of
Double Planetary Mixers. It is a 100-gallon model equipped with two identical
rectangular stirrers with upward rake fingers. Designed to rotate on their own axes
while orbiting the vessel on a common
axis, these style blades are ideal for batching dry powder blends, wet granulations
and similar formulations in the Double
Planetary Mixer. Interchangeable helical
blades are available as options and allow
the mixer to be utilized for viscous pastes
and putty-like materials.
Speed, power load and cycle time are all
controlled and displayed from this screen.
Two-hand raise/lower controls for the air/oil
hydraulic lift are also located on the panel
for opening and closing the mixer. With the
blades in the fully raised position, they are
completely accessible for easy cleaning while
the portable mix can is removed from under
the mixer and rolled into the discharging
area. The vessel is supplied with lift trunnions so it can be raised and tilted for fast
transfer of the finished product.
Maintenance and risk of product contamination are very low in a Double
Planetary Mixer as there are no shaft seals,
bearings, packing glands and stuffing boxes
submerged in the product zone. Available in
both industrial and sanitary configurations,
the Double Planetary Mixer is built from
half-pint to 750-gallon capacities.

Clariant Launches POS

Color Dispenser Machines
Clariant has launched the first compact
color dispenser to allow simultaneous
dispensing of up to six colors at a time.
Clariants machine is one of two new innovative prototypes offering performance
and productivity benefits to retailers, according to the company. Clariant Color
Dispenser IQ-S16 is one of the most compact machines now available on the market with simultaneous colorant dispensing
mode. With a footprint of 0.53m, it saves
on shop space without losing performance

and accuracy, according to the company.

Clariants dispensing technology allows a
dispensing speed of 1.1l/min with accuracy
down to 1/384 fl oz. It is based on stainless
steel piston pumps powered by a single motor that controls the entire system. The easyto-use machine offers low cost operation
and ownership. It is virtually calibration free
and, as colorant is dispensed directly into
paint without the need for tubing, it keeps
maintenance time and costs to a minimum.
Color Dispenser CD3001 is designed
to serve the majority of paint stores which
are looking at design and good price. It
offers the same performance and productivity advantages as Clariants more compact model, the IQ-S16.
All Clariant machines are designed to
handle all kinds of low VOC water-based
and universal colorants to support the sustainability requirements of the paints industry. The fully automatic colorant dispensers
can be equipped with up to 16 easy-to-mount
canisters with a standard capacity of 3 liters
each, to match optimum refill cycles.

Evonik Introduces Dynapol

Terra, a Bio-based Binder
for Coil Coatings
Evonik Industries has developed a new
product range of polyester resins for coil
coating primers and topcoats to market
maturity under the established Dynapol
brand. Dynapol Terra is based on renewable raw materials, which sets it apart
from other binders used for this type of
coating, according to the firm. Most other binder systems are based on saturated,
hydroxyl functional polyester polyols
that are produced mainly from petroleum-based raw materials. The colorants
and coatings industry has been looking
for suitable alternatives for these petrochemical building blocks for many years,
since resource efficiency is an important
growth generator.
With this new range of products, Evonik
has overcome two challenges at once, the
company stated. The coating experts

38 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

identified suitable bio-based polyester resin

building blocks and they ensured general applicability, fast implementation and
availability on an industrial scale. The first
Dynapol Terra polyester resins have already
been successfully introduced to customers.

Clariant Launches
Dispersogen PL 30/40
Clariant recently globally launched its
Dispersogen PL - range of dispersing agents
for waterborne pigment preparations.
Aimed at organic pigments and carbon blacks, the new dispersants give architectural coatings extra brightness and
brilliance thanks to their high pigment
loading. The patented copolymers are
able to create dispersions with more than
50% pigment, significantly more than
conventional loadings, the company reported. And the Dispersogen PL range
does this without sacrificing flowability. Viscosities of its pigment dispersions
are within the range of 50-500 mPAs.
Similarly loaded conventional pigment
preparations, by contrast, turn often to a
much higher viscosity.
According to Clariant, high pigmentloads also means that the Dispersogen PL
range does more for less. Its typical mixing
ratio is 1:10 up to 1:5 dispersant based on
active matter to pigment, and customer trials
over the past two years have shown that the
pigment pastes have a very good shelf life,
stable against drying and very compatible
with all kind of waterborne coatings.
Dispersogen PL 30 and Dispersogen PL
40 additionally are safe to humans and the
environment. Dispersogen PL 30 as a nonionic copolymer and Dispersogen PL 40 as
an anionic copolymer have a friendly ecotox profile and contain insignificant levels
of irritants and other hazards that might
require a coating to bear a CLP1 label.
Additionally these two dispersants have a
low VOC level and are suitable to be used
in decorative paints aiming to obtain ecolabel certification such as Germanys Blue
Angel (RAL-UZ 102). CW

The Emerald Coasts Latest Gem is Named

Tnemec Companys 2012 Tank of the Year

Appreciation of Floridas Emerald Coast reached new

heights when a 500,000-gallon pedestal water tank on
Okaloosa Island was refurbished with a mural representing
the areas Appalachian quartz sand beaches and featuring an
advanced fluoropolymer coating system from Tnemec.
The tanks exterior base coating system was applied by
Ohio-based American Suncraft Construction Company and
mural artist, Eric Henn, with engineering services provided by
Polyengineering, Inc. of Shalimar, Florida.
Exterior steel was prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP 2
Hand Tool Cleaning and SPC-SP3 Power Tool Cleaning and
primed with Series 135 Chembuild, a modified polyamidoamine epoxy for marginally prepared steel and tightly adhering old coatings. Series 73 Endura-Shield, an aliphatic acrylic

polyurethane, was the intermediate coat, followed by a finish

coat of Series 700 HydroFlon, an advanced fluoropolymer
that offers outstanding resistance to UV light for unprecedented long-term gloss and color retention. The project did
not require replacement of the existing Tnemec coating system on the tanks interior, which was in sound condition.
HydroFlon was also used for the lettering and the mural,
which required 14 different colors ranging from white, to
different shades of blues and greens. Nearly 150 gallons of
the exterior coatings were required to complete the project,
which was voted Tnemecs 2012 Tank of the Year based on
its aesthetic, creative and innovative uses of a coating system. The project was selected from more than 200 tanks
that were nominated for the contest. CW

This 500,000-gallon pedestal water tank on Okaloosa Island, Florida was named Tnemec Companys 2012 Tank of the Year.
