The virus used was phage, this consist of a DNA molecule and a

protein coat. When Phage attacks the bacteria it injects the DNA into
the bacteria and the bacteria produces more viruses as the Virus DNA
was injected, while the protein coat remains in the outside of the
bacteria.
In the first experiment:
Phage were produce in a medium containing S35 radioactive amino
acid. This created a population with S35 labelled protein, but no
radioactive label DNA. So when the Phage attacked the bacteria the
radioactive protein remained in the outside and new produced phage
had no radioactive label as the DNA was not radioactive, this
demonstrated that the protein was not the genetic material, but only
the coat in the outside.
In the second experiment:
Phage were produced in a medium containing P32-labeled
deoxyribonucleotides. This resulted in a phage population with P32labeled DNA, but no radioactive label protein coat. When the phage
injected the bacteria, the P32-labeled DNA entered the cell and could
be found in phage subsequently produced in the bacteria. This
demonstrated that DNA and not the protein contained the genetic
information to create new phage.
