ABSTRACT

The world we live in these days is becoming smarter day by day. The appliances we are using are
getting smarter than ever. This has become possible because of improvements in technology
which have allowed the appliances to communicate with each other. This new technology is
being called internet of things (IoT) and is being dubbed as the next big thing. Internet of
things is the interconnection of several embedded systems or smart devices with in an existing
internet infrastructure. The internet of things would provide seamless connection between several
devices which would make it possible to share data between these devices and make it possible
to remotely monitor several parameters and also create a smart integrated environment. As a part
of my independent study I intend to do a project related to this field.
The aim of this project is to provide the user with a continuous data of this heart rate. This
information is very beneficial to any person who exercises or intends to lose weight. A key
benefit of a Heart rate monitor is that it helps you maintain the optimal heart rate target zone for
your specific goal. This information can be displayed via a digital display or transmitted to some
other display device via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. This information can also be beneficial to people
recovering from any illness. Real time feedback makes Heart rate monitors valuable for people
recovering from cardiac related incidents. Such data can help ensure that the patients gradual
return to full strength and endurance proceeds safely and steadily.
This project would consist of a system on chip as the core of the project, a heart rate sensor
would be integrated with it and the data collected by this heart rate sensor would be sent to a
mobile device via a Bluetooth module which will also be integrated on to the system on chip.
The project will include integration of all these devices and then writing code to make them work
together. The coding would be mostly done in C. The information being sent and displayed on
the mobile device can be made to compare with data available on the mobile device and various
results can be displayed to the user. This can be done by making additions to the code. The
system on chip which I would be using is called a Beagle Board manufactured by the Texas
Instruments in association with Digi-Key and Newark element14. This board is customizable and
therefore we can add other sensors to the project in future if any new idea comes along. This
option will help us in adding other functionalities to the project apart from the heart rate sensor.
The Bluetooth module which I will be using is the Broadcom BLE module which has a high
performance integrated 2.4-GHz RF transceiver. It is fully compliant with Bluetooth 4.0 and all
prior standard features. The main reason as to why we will be using Bluetooth module is because
we have to send the information to a device which is available in a short range and Bluetooth is
the best available option for short range communication. The heart rate sensor which I will be
using is a heart rate sensor board manufacture by silicon labs.
This project can be implemented as a wearable technology if the boards being used can all be
integrated in to a small system on chip. The project I am doing is a proof of concept for the same.
The table below lists the several components along with their images and associated costs.

*The prices listed above are the prices listed against the respective items in their respective
websites. The actual prices may vary because of tax additions.
The project might also include some other small equipments such as connecting wires etc.,
whose price is not included in the table above.
This project holds the potential of integrating several other sensors to the board and make them
work together. I am not able to do that in this present project because of costs associated in
procuring them. This may be done following the success of the present project.
This is a very exciting field of technology and there are several possibilities as to what we can do
with the various hardware and software technologies available to us in the market today.
