The individuals in the Aschs experiment usually gave the same wrong answer out
of fear of being ridiculed or thought to be peculiar. Apparently, people conform for
two main reasons: because they want to fit in with the group (normative influence)
and because they believe the group is better informed than they are (informal
influence).
Conformity and crime are two sides of the same coin, to explain one is to explain
the other will occur unless prevented by strong social and personal control. The
sociological concept of social control includes both socialization, in which a person
acquires self-control, and the control over the persons behavior through the
external application of social sanctions, reward for conformity and punishment for
deviance.
3.Beckers theory explains deviance as a social process whereby some people are
able to defined as deviant. It emphasizes that the deviance is relative, it is not until
a label is given to someone by someone else in a position of social power that the
person actually became deviant, whenever controls break down or weaker deviance
is likely to result.
