Prof.K.J.Paulose, Dean-Management Studies was a panelist at the

Kerala State Level Quality Circle Competition organised by
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Kerala on February 25 at
Ernakulam.
Prof.K.J.Paulose also represented SCMS Group at the Deans
Summit 2015 organised by Deloitte on April 16 and 17 at
Hyderabad. There were two breakout sessions at the
summit on topics like (1) Talent Management:
Trends and Trials and (2) Higher Education in the
Digital Age.

MTech student on advanced training in Germany

for Improving Water Quality in India

Engineering student of SSET it is a dream
come true to be selected for undergoing advanced training in
Germany for a period of five weeks. She has been assigned to work
with the internationally reputed German company Limco
International GmbH, a consultant in Limnology (science of fresh
water).
SCMS Group has MoU with Limco for joint research and
technology transfer as well as for student and faculty exchange. As
per the MoU it was decided to introduce for the first time in India
the novel concept of Automated Biomonitoring. Faculty from SCMS
Water Institute had already been to Limco earlier. Now a student is
being offered the training on automated biomonitoring using the
instrument developed by Limco. After the training, the biosensing

equipment will be brought to SCMS Water Institute for conducting

studies in India. The new
equipment will be useful for
monitoring of water quality of
the inland waters of Kerala. It
will be extremely useful
because of the widespread
pollution of water resources
here caused by the industry,
agriculture, municipal waste
water and others.
Seminars and workshops
Ms. Sonal Ayyappan, Associate Professor-CSE, and Ms. Anuranji R.,
Assistant Professor-CSE, delivered a talk on 'Crypto Watermarking
and Image Security' during the workshop on 'Image Sensing,
Medical Imaging and Satellite Image Processing,' sponsored by
ACM as part of Faculty Development Programme at IIITM-K,
Technopark, Trivandrum on March 20 and 21.
Campus activities
A blood donation camp was conducted at SSET campus by
the NSS unit in association with Regional Blood Transfusion
Centre, Aluva on March 10. Forty students and ten staff members
donated blood. The programme was coordinated by
Mr. K.K.Gopalakrishnan, Sujai K. and A.Rakesh.
The activities of EEE Association were inaugurated by Mr. Reji John,
AGM, TELK, Angamaly, on February 6. Prof. M.L. Paul, HoD-EEE
presided.
IEEE face-to-face Kochi hub level seminar was held at our campus
on March 20. Hundred students from 12 engineering colleges in and
around Kochi participated.
GENESIS'15, National level technical festival organised by
Association of Royal Mechanical Engineers was held on March 21.
Mr. Antio Paul, MD, Star Pipes and Fittings was the chief guest.
Vipanchika-15, annual cultural festival of SSET was conducted on
March 13.
As part of the activities of the Industry Institute Interaction Cell of
ME Department, a talk by Mr. Jery Altaf from 3Dify.in on '3D
Printers' was held on March 17.
As a part of the outreach programme by IIT Madras, a talk by Dr.
Krishnankutty P., Department of Ocean Engineering, IIT-M was
held on March 17 to spread awareness about Ocean Engineering
department, the courses offered, research areas, etc. among students
so that they can opt for challenging careers in Ocean Engineering
in future.

the mouse murmured and watched. But, alas, to his
utter dismay a mousetrap was taken out of the packet.

Our life itself is the sum of our interactions with the

surroundings. Thousands of such interactions take place every
day. These interactions may produce benign as well as malign
effects. If it produces beneficial effects, we call it progress. If the
results are harmful, we take it as downturn.

So, the despondent mouse returned home head down, worried as

to how to face the threat all alone. That very night a sound was
heard throughout the house like the sound of a mousetrap
catching its prey. The farmer's wife rushed to look at the prey. In
the darkness, she could not make out it was a venomous snake
whose tail was caught by the trap. The annoyed snake bit the
farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital and she
returned home with a fever.

An adversity to someone around us can also be an opportunity.

True achievement comes when we identify such an opportunity
and create a benefit out of it for everyone. Remember, it was when
thousands of soldiers fell injured and infected during the World
War II that the antibiotic Penicillin was discovered by Alexander
Fleming. Most of all successful entrepreneurships arise out of
recognising a problem around and providing the best possible
solution for it.

It is a common practice to treat a fever with fresh chicken soup. So,

the farmer took out his knife and went to the farmyard to prepare
the main ingredient for the soup. However, his wife's malady
persisted; so friends and neighbours came to sit with her round

others. Unsuccessful people are asking, why bother about

The 22nd Annual Convocation

The solemn and colourful ceremony of the annual convocation of the
22nd PGDM batch was held on April 27. Hundred outgoing
qualified students received their diploma certificates from the hands
of the Chief Guest Mr.Anil Radhakrishnan, CEO, Adani Logistics,
Mumbai. The special awards were presented by the Guest of
Honour Mr. Dimitrov Krishnan, VP, Volvo Construction

While Aparna R. received the Chairman's Gold Medal, instituted in

memory of the late Vice Chairman Dr.Pradeep P.Thevannoor, for
the Best Academic Performer, the Best Outgoing Student's Award
for the best overall performance went to Sharon Thankam James.
The merit certificates for the toppers in the two specialisation
streams Banking & Insurance, and Retail were received by Sreedevi
Chandramohan and Jithesh M. respectively.
Caudia Iken, PGDM student from University of RavensburgWeingarten, Germany, under the student exchange programme,
received her successful course completion certificate for the two
trimesters she attended.
In his convocation address, Mr.Anil Radhakrishnan referred to the
two major factors that would be of importance to the budding
managers in their future life. To illustrate on the first factor namely,
the external circumstances, he presented a video clipping of the
famous TED talk by Prof.Hans Rosling on the amazing story about
the growth progression of India and the tremendous opportunities
open to today's youngsters in the coming three decades. The
external part is all in support of you and you are going to be in the
best part of India's future, said Mr.Anil. The country is well set to
move forward and you are going to be the torch bearers to take us
forward, he continued.
With regard to the second factor namely, the unique inner potential
of each individual, Mr.Anil briefed the youngsters that it was
extremely important for them to understand their unique potential
and be passionate and excited about what they were doing.
Stressing on the significance of values he said that there might be a
number of occasions in their career when they would be forced to
take decisions compromising on the value system, but never should
they compromise.
Another important factor that ensures your success is the people
around you, how well you manage them and their expectations, he
observed. If people around you are backing, you can be
successful, remarked he. Mr.Anil concluded his address with a
positive note: India is going to be the next superpower, under your
leadership.
I feel happy because of a couple of observations on this
convocation, said Mr.Dimitrov Krishnan in his commencement
speech, firstly, the larger number of women graduating out
and secondly, they are high achievers, since most of the best
awards went to women. It speaks volumes, he explained,
because an area of energy that has not been harnessed is
women power. In the coming years there will be more women

members in the board of companies in India, he anticipated.

In order to make a good career, in any job you need to make value
addition, he clarified. Are you learning something every day and
are you contributing something to the organisation? If so, you are in
the right place and the right direction, he explained. Then you don't
have to bother about your career planning, he elaborated. The usual
tendency to remain in the comfort zone for long has to be prevented
at any cost, if you want to move forward, he said. At the same time
never be impatient because patience is a virtue even in career, he
justified. Business is all about people. That is to say it is about
managing yourself and managing the people around. Therefore as
long as you remain focused on working with and learning from
people you will be successful, he pointed out.

The award is in recognition of the exemplary contribution
made by SCMS Group in terms of Leadership, Quality and
Excellence in the field of education. The award is given to the
best 50 educational institutions in the world. SCMS is the first
Indian institution to get the award. The Award in Leadership
in Quality from BID has over the last three decades established
itself as the true standard of excellence for institutions and
companies around the world. The award will be presented at
the ISLQ convention to be held in Paris on June 28.

As a part of world water day on March 22, SCMS Water Institute

and Lulu Mall jointly organised a water awareness road show at
Edappally to promote awareness on major threats like high
bacterial-infected drinking water. Mr. Sajan Koikkal, Assistant
Commissioner of Police (Traffic) inaugurated the road show.

No shortcut to success

It was indeed a unique moment in my life today. To me it was really
an exhilarating experience to have been honoured in front of such a
large gathering and to have received the coveted awards from such
illustrious persons. I have been waiting for this moment from the last
convocation and when the time came today I was literally
dumbstruck. When I heard my name being called by Filomina
Ma'am I felt like the floor swept off underneath my feet. It was like I
have conquered something. My mind was telling me: Yes Aparna ..!
At lastthe day has come when your hard work has reaped
fruits!! When I stood on the stage seeing my parents filled with
pride, it was the best feeling I ever had.
There is no shortcut to success. Always chase your dreams till you
conquer it. I am proud to say on this day that I have conquered my
dream job in Deloitte from this SCMS platform. Teachers, friends,
parents and God Almighty, all are the pillars of support I had in
SCMS life that helped me achieve this. To my juniors, what I have to
say is: Find out your passion whatever it is and work for it before it's
late, whatever happens don't deter. If you are determined nothing
can stop you from achieving it.
