at1005hrsfromtheIntegratedTestRange(ITR),
Balasore,Odisha.Theentiremission,fromliftofftillthe
finalsplashdownwasaperfectflightachievingallthe
missionobjectives.
ThecruisemissileNirbhay,poweredbyasolidrocket
motorboosterdevelopedbytheAdvancedSystems
Laboratory(ASL)tookoffmajesticallyfromamobile
launcherspecificallydesignedforNirbhaybytheVehicles
R&DEstablishment,VRDEBothbeingDRDO
laboratories.Asitachieveddesignatedaltitudeand
velocity,theboostermotorgotseparated,theturbofanengineautomaticallyswitchedontakingoverthefurther
propulsionandthewingsopenedupbythecommandsgeneratedbytheonboardcomputer(OBC)stabilisingthe
flight.GuidedbyahighlyadvancedinertialnavigationsystemindigenouslydevelopedbyResearchCentreImarat
(RCI)theNirbhaycontinueditsflightthatlastedalittleover1hrand10minutes.Throughoutitspath,themissile
wastrackedwiththehelpofgroundbasedradarsanditshealthparametersweremonitoredbyindigenous
telemetrystationsbyteamofprofessionalsfromDRDOsITRandLRDE(Electronics&RadarDevelopment
Establishment).Additionally,theperformanceofNirbhaywascloselywatchedbyanIndianAirForceaircraft.

Themissilemaintainedanaccuracybetterthan10metersthroughoutitspathandcoveredadistanceofmore
than1000kminformedDrAvinashChanderspeakingafterthecompletionofthemission.Thesuccessful
indigenousdevelopmentofNirbhaycruisemissilewillfillavitalgapinthewarfightingcapabilitiesofourarmed
forces.ContinedDrAvinashChander.
The1000kilometerclasscruisemissilewithcapabilitytostrikedeepintotheenemyterritory,hasbeendesigned
anddevelopedbytheDefenceResearchandDevelopmentOrganisation,DRDO,IndiaspremierDefenceR&D
organisationatitsaeronauticsR&DlaboratoryADE(AeronauticalDevelopmentEstablishment)basedin
Bengaluru,Karnataka.ThemissileisyetanothergiantstepforwardinIndiastechnologicalcapabilitiesfordesign
developmentandleadingtoproductionstateoftheartweaponsplatformsandequipmentforcountrysArmed
Forces.

ThiswasthesecondlaunchofNirbhaycruisemissile.Themaidenlaunchlastyearon12thMarch2013was
partialsuccessachievingmostofthemissionobjectives.Themaidenflighthadtobeterminatedforsafety
reasonsduetomalfunctionofacomponent,afterdeviationfromintendedpathwasobserved.

Earlier,thelaunchpreparationsandplanswereauthorisedafterthoroughreviewbyexpertsledbyDrAvinash
Chander,underwhoseguidancethelaunchprocesswasexecuted.
P.SrikumarDirectorADE,asthemissiondirectorledthelaunchoperations.Thelaunchpreparationswere
plannedandsupervisedbyVasanthSastriProjectDirectorNirbhayproject.
ThelaunchwaswitnessedbyDrKTamilmani,DS&DGAeronauticalsystems,DrVGSekranDS&DGMissiles
andstrategicsystems,ViceAdmiralDineshPrabhakar(retd.)AVSM,NSM,VSM.DGATVP,DrSatishReddy,DS
andDirectorRCI,DrTessyThomas,OSandDirectorASL,ShriMVKVPrasadOSandDirectorITRandsenior
DRDOscientists.
