Authentic Love

his is one of my favorite lines No one

has greater love than this, to lay down
ones life for ones friends. Here, Jesus
emphasizes the importance of sacrificing
ones life (Mt. 16:26). To lay down our life
for the sake of our loved ones is heroic.
To love in its highest expression is to give
something of oneself and to give up ones
life for the other. It does not really mean
to die for it, but to sacrifice yourself for the
benefit of someone you love.
I have read a story of a daughter who
witnessed the love that existed between
her dad and mom. Her mom had developed
dementia and began to lose memories
of even her family. Yet her Dad would
regularly visit her at the hospital and find
ways to accommodate her diminished
capacities. For instance, he would take her
some saltwater taffy, open a piece and place
it to her mouth something she could not
do by herself. Then as she slowly chewed
the candy, her Dad would quietly sit with
her and hold her hand. After that her Dad
would smile and say: I feel such peace and
joy spending time with her.
Though touched by her dads great
joy in helping her mom, yet she was more
affected by the reality that he was depicting
Gods grace. She realized that Jesus is
willing to humble Himself to connect with
them in their weaknesses. This is just to
show how much our Lord, Jesus loves us.
He will lay down his life for them as
proof of his love. John writes: The way we
came to know love was that he laid down
his life for us; so we ought to lay down our
lives for our brothers (1 Jn. 3:16). Jesus
Himself declares this not as some vague
ideal but as a sign of what He will do for His
friends.
Another example of this genuine and
highest expression of love is the true to
life story of these two modern saints who
offered their lives for the sake of love. St.
Lorenzo Ruiz, tortured by the Japanese
to renounce his faith, told his tormentors
that had he but a thousand lives, he would
offer them all to the Lord. St. Maximillian
Kolbe met his death at the Auschwitz
concentration camp when he offered
himself to take the place of a prisoner who
was a family man to line up for execution.

Thus, in this weeks text, John 15:9-17,

immediately following on the metaphor
of the Vine and the branches, Jesus
teaches the disciples that discipleship
means friendship with Him and with God.
Discipleship is being a branch of the Vine.
It is relational. Hence Jesus use of the term
friends for his followers: I no longer call
you servants I have called you friends
(v.14). Jesus distinguishes friendship from
servanthood. To be a friend is to share a

personal relationship and to be made aware

of the plans and purposes of the other. This
is how the Father has related to the Son
(Jn. 5:20). Thus, just as Jesus learned from
the Father, so now He makes known His
purposes to His disciples. And He states the
core value of friendship in the community
of followers: No one has greater love than
this, to lay down ones life for ones friends
(Jn. 15:13).

ang nagligad nga isyu, akon

ginsugoran ang paghatag sang
Napulo ka mga Bagay nga Dapat
Mahibaloan sang Isa Ka Katoliko
nahanungod sa Kasal. Akon ini
padayunon sa sini nga isyu:

3. Ang Kasal isa ka Panaad nga

nagalawig sa Bug-os nga Kinabuhi.
Para sa mga Katoliko, ang kasal
nagapabilin samtang nagakabuhi.
Kon ang isa ka tao matuod gid nga
nakasal, kon sayuron, valido ang
iya kasal, nagapabilin sia nga kasal sa
iya ginpakasalan tubtob nga ang isa
sa ila mapatay. Kon magbulag sia sa
iya, nagapabilin sila nga kasal gihapon.
Kon makakuha sia sing diborsyo halin sa
gobyerno, sa mata sang Simbahan, kasal
man sia gihapon sa iya gin-diborsyohan. Kon
valido ang kasal, kamo naga-asawahay sa
bug-os ninyo nga kinabuhi. Kon magbulagay
kamo ukon makakuha sang diborsyo, indi
kamo makapangasawa sa iban. Ang maghimo
sini nagakomiter sang grabe nga sala sang
adulteryo. Bisan indi pa sia magpakasal sa
iban, pero kon makighilawas sia sa iban,
adulteryo man ina gihapon.
4. Agud mangin valido ang kasal, kinahanglan
nga ang lalaki kag babayi hilway sa pagpakasal.
Ini nagakahulogan nga indi ikaw
makapakasal sa isa nga nakasal na.

5. Agud mangin valido ang kasal, ang lalaki

kag babayi dapat nakahangop sang kinaugali
sang kasal kag maghimo sang ila sumpa sa
kasal sa hilway kag himpit nga kabubut-on.
Ang mga tawo nagapakasal tungod sa
madamo kag lainlain nga mga katuyoan,

a sini nga bulan, may kabuhi ang aton

nga mga kapilya sa mga kabarangayan
bangud sang aton pagsaulog sang Flores
de Mayo. Ang mga kabataan nagatipon sa
kapilya sa pagpangamuyo kag paghalad sang
bulak sa kadungganan sang aton Mahal nga
Iloy. Isa man ini ka maayo nga kahigayunan
nga matudluan ang aton mga kabataan sang
katekesis ukon sang mga basic nga doktrina
sang Simbahan. Nagapanginbulahan ako

nagaserbisyo sa mga kabataan. Kon wala

de Mayo kag indi man naton mabuligan ang
aton mga kabataan agud mangin maayo kag
maalam nga mga Kristiano.
Ang Flores de Mayo isa ka matahum
nga tradisyon sa aton Simbahan. Paagi sini,
ginapadunggan naton si Maria, ang aton Iloy
nga wala gid naga-untat sa pagpangamuyo
kag pagtuytoy sa aton palapit sa iya Anak

ministro nga indi Katoliko. Lakip na

diri ang gintawag nga kasal nga civil,
ukon ang pagpakasal sa atubang sang
isa ka hukom. Kon sa aton pa, ang isa
ka Katoliko indi sarang makapagusto
kon diin kag kon sin-o ang makasal
sa iya sa rason nga nanamian sia
magpakasal diri, ukon natahuman sia,
ukon may kahulogan para sa iya. Ang

VISIT OF STO. Nio de CEBU

A replica of the original image of Santo Nio de Cebu

is coming to Jaro Cathedral on May 20, 2105 and will stay
overnight.
This visit of the Santo Nio de Cebu image is in line with
the celebration of the three great and significant events
for the Order of Augustinians in the Philippines: the 450th
anniversary of the Finding of the Image of Santo Nio de Cebu,
the 450 years of Augustinian Presence in the Philippines, and
the 50th year of the Santo Nio Church as Basilica Minore.
The Augustinians are the pioneers of the systematic Christian
evangelization of the Panay Islands and most of the entire
Philippine archipelago.
Let us come to venerate the Child Jesus!

talk at the San Carlos Seminary on Saturday,

According to him, this fact explains why
some of themfriars and nuns, religious
brothers and sistersstill manifest the
weaknesses and vices of ordinary nonconsecrated people, appearing grumpy and
impatient at times.
Quoting St. Thomas Aquinas, a fellow
Dominican and scholastic philosopher
known for his Summa Theologica, Timoner,
who is also a member of the International
Theological Commission (ITC), noted that
the religious state is the school for the
perfection of charity (perfectae caritatis).

Lifelong goal
If we become perfect then we should
leave because we are already perfect. But
this is a lifelong goal, he said.
He pointed out he, his confreres, and
other religious entered the religious life
precisely because they are not yet perfect in
charity.
Timoner, however, reminded his
audience that the perfection of charity
through poverty, chastity, and obedience is
not something only the religious are called
to.
These are the counsels for all the
baptized, he stressed.

t is difficult to please everybody.

Everyone has his own personality,
his own likes and dislikes, his own
idiosyncrasies. We cannot bend everybody
to our own will.
We are brought up in different homes,
where our parents, our relatives, and our
companions
at home try to mold us according to
what they believe is good for us. From
infancy to childhood, they inject in us the
values which they have acquired. However,
as time goes on, we are exposed to different
kinds of society, from home, to school, to
social gatherings, and the circle we move in
becomes bigger as we become familiar with
different personalities.
How beautiful it would be if
we gain more friends as the years
go by if we learn how to adjust
with people and circumstances.
We must always remember that
if others have faults, we, too,
have ours. Nobody is perfect.
We all have our mistakes, but
if we want to be loved and
remembered, we must not only
pretend to be good but must
really be good to adjust with
anybody in all circumstances
never to insult anybody, nor
show our hatred openly.

suffering was too great as He hangs on
the Cross: Father, forgive them, for they
know not what they do. This is one of the
teachings of Jesus which we must cherish
and hold dear in our heart. If we want to
be excused, we must also excuse. If we
want to be forgiven, we must also forgive.
I am glad that during my waning years,
God the Father has given me a prayer
called the Fiat Octave which is making
me courageous and spiritually strong. May
I share it with you.
First Octave: Octave of Praise. There
is no prayer book for this Praise the Lord
in your own words according to your faith
in Him.

Second Octave: Octave of Thanksgiving.

Give your thanks for the cure of some
sickness in the family or for the friends you
pray for. Thank Him for giving you relief
from your problems and other things you
received.
Third Octave: Octave of Offering. Offer
your problems, your needs, anything you
feel that needs His intercession.
Fourth Octave: Octave of Repentance.
You know what this means.
Fifth Octave: Octave of Inheritance.
What are those values you inherited? Is
it humility? Or is it charity? Or economic
security? or etc.?
Sixth Octave: Fiat Octave. Your loyalty
to God, your obedience to Him your trust
walk with Him never letting
go of His Hands.
Seventh Octave: Octave
of Fidelity. Let us follow God
wherever He takes us. Let us
walk behind Him and we will
not slip into the mire of sin.
