I.

Mission

TheprimarygoaloftheCellBiology,StemCellsandDevelopment(CSD)Programistotrain
talentedscientistsincellanddevelopmentalbiology.TheProgramstrivestoattractoutstanding
studentswiththehighestpotential,andtoprovidethemwithqualitytrainingthatstimulates
independentandcreativescientificthinking.Ultimately,helpingstudentstodeveloptheirfullpotential
inbecomingindependentinvestigatorsandleadersinbiologicalscience.
TheProgramsemphasisisonthedefinitionandresolutionofbiologicalproblemsratherthan
theapplicationoftechnologies.Thematically,theprogramisfocusedoncell,stemcellsand
developmentalbiologyandoffersawiderangeofresearchopportunities.Thenatureofthisprogram
willbestservethosestudentswhoareinterestedindevelopingindependentresearchcareersandwho
wishtopursueproblemsinbiomedicalsciencefromaninterdisciplinaryperspective.
Aftertheinitialperiodofcoursework,studentschoosetheirspecialtyfieldsfromadiverselist
oftopics,andproceedwithresearchuntilthegenerationanddefenseofathesisleadstotheawardofa
Ph.D.inCellandDevelopmentalBiology.

GraduateSchoolAdministration
TheGraduatePrograminCellBiology,StemCellsandDevelopment(CSD)ispartofthe
GraduateSchooloftheUniversityofColorado,whichisanequalopportunityinstitution.Thegraduate
programsattheAnschutzMedicalCampusarepartoftheGraduateSchool,whichisunderthe
leadershipofBarryShur,PhD,Dean;andFranOsterberg,AssistantDean.
TheUniversityofColoradoDenverGraduateSchoolCampuspublishestheGraduateStudent
Handbook,whichincludesgeneralinformationandrulesconcerninggraduatestudents,aswellas
specificinformationonHonorCodeandGrievanceProcedures.Thisinformationappliestostudentsin
allprograms.ThepurposeofthishandbookistorelayadditionalinformationspecifictotheCSD
program.
A.
StudentSupport.Atpresent,studentsacceptedinthePh.D.programareprovidedfulltuition,
healthinsurance,andastipendof$26,000peryearforlivingexpenses(fortheacademicyear2011
2012).Continuedsupportiscontingentuponsatisfactoryacademicandresearchperformancebythe
student.Whenastudententersathesislab,thethesismentorassumescompleteresponsibilityforthe
studentsstipend,tuition,fees,andassociatedresearchcosts.Inordertoqualifyforinstatetuitionfor
thefollowingyear,alloutofstatestudentsmustestablishColoradoresidencybythesummerof
thefirstyear.
B.
StudentAdvising.Duringthefirstyear,CSDstudentswillmeetwithmembersoftheGraduate
AdvisoryCommittee(GAC)onarotatingbasistodiscussthestudentsprogressintheCSDProgram
andanyquestionsthatmaycomeup.Studentswillbeexpectedandencouragedtoseekadvicefrom
the GAC, Director, and/or other CSD faculty and student members prior to lab rotations,
ComprehensiveExamination,andanyothersituationrequiringfacultyconsultation.

LaboratoryRotationsintheFirstYear.Rotationsserveseveralimportantpurposes.First,
theyenablethestudenttoexploreandcompareseveralareasofcellanddevelopmentalbiology
researchandaidinthechoiceofamentorandprojectforthesiswork.Second,rotationseminars
provideintensetraininginthecraftandartofpublicpresentation,anessentialaspectoffuturecareer
success.Third,theyallowprogramfacultytoevaluatethemotivationandintellectualpreparednessof
studentstoundertakeindependentresearch.Studentsshoulddiscusstheirinterestswithseveral
potentialfacultymentors,severalweeksormorebeforethestartoftherotation.

NumberofRotations.Studentsmustperform3rotationsbeforethestartoftheirsecond
year.Studentsshouldstarttheirfirstrotationinthefallsemester.Studentsmustcomplete3rotations
in3separatelaboratoriesinordertoadvancetotheirsecondyear.Registerforthefirst2rotations
(Sections1&2OV1&OV2)inthefall;registerforyour3rdrotation(Section1OV1)inthespring.
OfficialdatesforrotationsaresetbytheGraduateSchool.Optionally,studentsmaystartarotation
duringthesummerbeforeformalentryintotheProgram.MedicalScientistTrainingProgram(MSTP)
studentsmustcompletetworotations(duringthesummersofthefirstandsecondyearofMedical
School).

RotationExpectations.Forprofessionalsintraining,itisnotappropriatetorequirea
minimumnumberofhoursforrotationwork.Strongselfmotivationisanabsolutelyessential
characteristicforanindependentscientist,andweexpectourstudentstodemonstratethisquality
throughouttheirtraining.Inthisregard,studentsshouldexpecttobeinthelabbeyondthenormal

workinghours,i.e.evenings,weekends,andpossiblyovervacationdaysduringtheterm.This
commitmentoftimeisespeciallyimportantwhenlong,complexexperimentsarebeingdone.Amajor
partofthementorsrotationalassessment(aswellashis/herwillingnesstoacceptastudent)willbe
basedonthedegreeandqualityoflabeffort.Studentsshouldalwaysdiscusstimeoffand/orvacation
dayswiththeirlabmentorinadvance,bothintheirlabrotationsandoncetheyenterathesislab.
Ashortwrittenevaluationofthestudentsrotationwillbeprovidedbythefacultymentor.
Studentsarerequiredtogiveanoralpresentationoftheirrotationprogressaswellassubmitawritten
reportoflaboratorywork(12pages;includinghypothesis,necessarybackground,experiments
preformed,resultsobtainedandconclusion).Aftercompletingtheserequirements,rotationgradeswill
beassignedbythefirstyearadvisorinconsultationwiththerotationmentor,anddiscussedwiththe
student.
D.
RotationSeminar.Attheendoftherotationthestudentwillpresentaseminar.Thepurposeof
theseminaristoprovideintensetraininginthecraftandartofpublicpresentation,anessentialaspect
offuturecareersuccess.Eachseminarshouldbe15minutesinlength.Thestudentmustrehearsethe
seminarwithhisorherrotationmentorpriortothepublicpresentation.Theseminarisanessential
componentoftheresearchrotation.Studentsareexpectedtopresentawellorganized,clear,and
thoughtfulseminar.Studentsshouldconsiderthefollowingelementswhendesigningtheir
presentation(althoughtheorderneednotbestrictlyfollowed):
Introductionashortstatementofthequestionorproblemaddressedbytherotation,andthehypothesis
tobetested.
Background describe the significance of the question in broad terms for a diverse audience.
Describepreviousworkanditsrelationshiptotheproject.
Specific experimental aims what were the particular experimental goals proposed to test the
hypothesis?
MethodsandDesignexplainbrieflyanyunusualstrategiesortechniquesemployed.

Conclusionsandfuturedirections whatcanyouconcludefromyourresults,andwhatwouldyou
pursueifyouremainedontheproject.
SuggestionsforEffectiveSeminars
1. Avoidreadingormemorizingyourpresentationwordforword.Wooden,canneddeliveriesare
dullandveryhardforaudiencestofollow.
2. Prepareandusesimple,effectivevisualaids.Rememberthateffectivecommunicationofdataand
ideasisyourgoal!Donotspendundueeffortandexpenseonfancymulticoloredslides(especially
fortext),ifcolorisnotrequiredtosimplifycomplexdataorconcepts.Coloredvisualstendto
requireadarkenedroomandareoftenmuchhardertoreadthanblackonwhitelinedrawingsor
letters.Keeptextverybriefanddonotreaddirectlyfromthescreen(audiencesaremuchfasterat
readingsilently!).
3. Usethemarkerboardwhenappropriate.Diagrammingoroutliningwhileyouaretalkingisa
highlyeffectivemeansofexplainingconceptsdifficulttodescribewiththespokenword.Useof
themarkerboardcanalsohelpanswerspontaneousquestionsfromtheaudience.

4. Consideraudiencequestionscarefully!Bothfacultyandstudentsareencouragedtoaskquestions
duringandafterrotationseminars.Afewofthesequestionsmaybeintendedtoprobeyour
understandingofyourresearchratherthanilluminateanareaofconfusion.Partofyourevaluation
willconcernyoureffectivenessinrespondingtoquestions.Thus,makesurethatyouunderstand
thequestionbeforeanswering.Repeatthequestionoraskforarephrasingifyouneedto.Second,
relaxandtakeamomentofsilenceifyoumustbeforeansweringtoformulateacoherentanswer.
Third,ifaftercontemplationyoudontknowtheanswer,dontbeafraidtosayso.Weallget
stumpedfromtimetotime!
E.
TransfertotheThesisLabatEndofFirstYear:Animportantaimoftherotationsisto
enablethestudenttoobtainathesismentor.Afterthecompletionofthethreerotationsforregular
graduatestudentsortworotationsforMSTPs,thestudentmustcometoamutualagreementwitha
facultymembertoactastheirthesismentor.ThechairoftheGACandtheProgramAdministrator
mustbenotifiedonthechoiceofmentoronorbeforeJune15thofthefirstyear.Officialtransferto
thethesislabtakesplaceonJuly1st.Underexceptionalcircumstancesandatthediscretionofthe
GAC,astudentmaybeallowedtoperformanadditionalrotationduringthesummerfollowingthefirst
academicyear,fortheexpresspurposeofenhancingthementorselectionprocess.
F.

PreliminaryExamattheEndoftheFirstYear:

1.ThegeneralformatofapreliminaryexaminationfortheCellBiology,StemCellsandDevelopment
GraduateProgramisawrittengrantproposalfollowedbyanoralexaminationbyapreliminary
examinationcommittee.
2.Thepreliminaryexaminationcommitteewillconsistoffivefacultymembers.Everyyear,following
thefirst2yearsafterinitiationofthispreliminaryexamformat,twocommitteememberswillbe
replacedwithnewfaculty.Eachmemberwillserveaminimumoftwoconsecutiveyears.The
committeewillalsoconsistoffacultyrepresentingdifferentaspectsoftheresearchwithinCSD,such
asDevelopment,CellBiologyandStemCellBiology.
3.Fourweeksbeforetheoralexamination,studentswillbeprovidedwithfiveresearchtopics;one
topicfromeachcommitteemember.Eachtopicwillberepresentedby23papersthathavebeen
selectedbythecommitteemembers.Eachstudentwillneedtopickonetopicforhis/herproposal.
Whilestudentscanselectthesametopic,obviously,studentsarenotallowedtoworktogetherontheir
proposals.Thetopiccannothaveasignificantoverlapwithstudentsresearchinterestsintheirfuture
lab,andwillhavetobeapprovedbythecommittee.
4.Eachstudentwillhaveonecommitteememberassignedasapreliminaryexaminationmentor.The
samecommitteememberwillalsoserveasachairduringexaminationofthisstudent.Themainroleof
thementorwillbetoserveasagotopersonforthestudentifs/he(thestudent)hasquestions
regardingthewrittenandoralportionsoftheexamination.Thementorcanadvisethestudent
regardingtheexpectationsofthewrittenandoralexaminations.Thementorcannot,however,be
directlyinvolvedineditingorrewritingthestudentsgrantproposal.Mentoralsocannotbedirectly
involvedinsuggesting/designingtheexperimentsorinterpretationsofpotentialoutcomesthatwillbe
describedintheproposal.

5.Studentswillcompletethewrittenproposalanddeliverittoeachmemberofthecommitteenolater
than1weekbeforethedateoftheoralexamination.Thisdeadlineisfirm.Theproposalistofollow
theNIHpredoctoralfellowshipformatandcanbenolongerthan6pages(excludingreferences).
6.Inadditiontothewrittenproposal,thestudentwillbeexaminedorallybythecommittee.The
examinationforeachstudentwilllastapproximatelyonehour,unlessthecommitteedecidesadditional
timeisneeded.
7.Theexamisdesignedtotesteachstudentsunderstandingofkeyconceptsandabilitytothink
throughexperimentaldesign,bothofwhichareimportantforresearchinbiomedicalsciences,witha
focusondevelopment,cellbiologyandstemcellbiology.Whilethemainfocusofthequestionswill
berelatedtothewrittenproposal,studentsshouldexpectquestionsoutsidetheimmediatescopeof
writtenproposal.Allquestions,however,willbelimitedtothematerialthatthestudentwasexposedto
duringcoursesandrotationsthattheyhadwithinthefirstyearofagraduateprogram.
8.StudentswillbegradedonaPassorFailbasis,asdecidedbyamajorityofthecommittee.Thefinal
gradingwillincorporateacombinedevaluationofthewrittenproposalaswellasoftheoral
examination.Bothaspectsoftheexaminationwillbeweightedequally.
9.Intheeventofafailedexam,thesituationwillbereferredtotheGraduateAdvisingCommittee
(GAC)forCSDforaremediationandexamretakeplantobecompletedbytheendofthesummer
semester.

coordinatingfacultyschedulescanbechallenging.Again,wewanttoemphasizethatarrangingthis
updateisyourresponsibility,andurgeyoutomakeplanswithyourcommittee,andscheduleyour
presentationwiththeprogramadministratorwellinadvance.

ComprehensiveExam.AtthebeginningofthesecondyearofstudyCSDgraduatestudentswillbegin
preparingfortheComprehensiveExam.Itishighlyrecommendedthatthestudentcarefullyreadthe
GraduateStudentHandbookonComprehensiveExaminationpoliciesanddeadlines,andpickupa
packetofinstructionsandformsfromtheGraduateSchoolwellaheadoftheplannedexaminationso
allrequiredpaperworkcanbecompletedontime.Completedpaperworkmustbesubmittedtothe
GraduateSchoolnolaterthantwoweekspriortotheexaminationdate.Note:Astudentmustbe
registeredatthetimehe/shetakestheComprehensiveExamination.
StudentsmusttaketheGraduateSchoolComprehensiveExaminationforadmissiontocandidacyfor
theCSDPh.D.bytheendofthesummeroftheirsecondyearbutbeforeJanuary1stofthethird
year.AnydeviationtothisrequirementmusthaveapprovalfromthePI,GraduateAdvisory
Committee,andtheProgramDirector.TheComprehensiveExaminationCommitteeshallconsistofa
minimumoffiveGraduateFacultymembers.Atleastoneofthemembersmustbeoutsidethe
Programscoretrainingfaculty.Themajorityofthemembers,includingthechair,mustbefromthe
coretrainingfacultyoftheCSDProgram.StudentsshouldcontactmembersoftheGraduateFaculty
whomtheywishtobeontheircommittee,inconsultationwiththeDirectoroftheProgramandtheir
thesisadvisor.Studentsshouldinformthecommitteemembersoftheirbackground,thetopicoftheir
thesisresearchandtheirpreliminaryresults.Inaddition,thestudentarrangesthetimeandlocationof
theexam,andinformsthemembersofthecommitteethattheexaminationrequiresthreehours.The
studentshouldprovidetheGACwiththenamesofthecommitteemembers.
Theexaminationwillhaveasitsfocusathesisresearchproposalwrittenbythestudentusingthe
formatofaNIHpredoctoralfellowship.Althoughpreliminarydatacollectedbythestudentare
helpful,itisnotessentialfortheproposal.Thewrittenproposalmustbedistributedtothe
ComprehensiveExamCommitteeatleasttwoweekspriortotheexamination.Thestudentmust
adequatelydemonstratethescientificknowledgeandabilitytodefendthisproposal,aswellas
satisfyingtheoverallrequirementsfortheexaminationassetforthbytheUCDAMCGraduate
StudentHandbook.Theexaminationwillconsistofa3045minuteseminarbythestudent,general
questionsfromtheaudienceandthendetailedquestionsfromtheThesisCommittee.Asstatedinthe
graduatestudenthandbook,thecomprehensiveexaminationwilltestyourmasteryofabroadfieldof
knowledge,notmerelytheformalcourseworkcompleted.Thestudentshouldconsultwithhisorher
committeememberspriortotheexamastothesubjectareaseachmemberexpectsthestudenttohave

1.Guidelines
TherulesoftheUniversityofColoradoGraduateSchoolconcerningaPhDthesisareas
follows:Alldoctoralstudentsarerequiredtosubmitathesis(ordissertation)totheGraduateSchool
aspartialfulfillmentoftherequirementsofthedegreeofDoctorofPhilosophy.Theformandscopeof
thisthesisisdeterminedbythestudent,thethesisadvisor,theAdvisoryCommittee,andtheProgram.
Thethesisshouldbebaseduponoriginalinvestigationandshowingmaturescholarshipandcritical
judgmentaswellasfamiliaritywithtoolsandmethodsofresearch.Itmustbeessentiallyapprovedby
theexaminingcommitteebeforethefinalexaminationcanbetaken.
TheGraduatePrograminCellBiology,StemCellsandDevelopmentamplifiesthedefinitionofthe

Thesuccessfulthesispresentsaproblemorientated,originalandsubstantive

2.ThesisCommittee
Onceastudentisadmittedtocandidacy,he/sheshouldestablishaThesisCommitteewiththe
adviceofthethesisadvisorandtheDirectoroftheGraduateProgram.Thecommitteeneednotbethe
sameastheComprehensiveExamCommitteebutshouldbecomposedoffiveGraduateFaculty
members;atleastonemembermustbeoutsidetheprogramandthemajorityfromwithintheprogram.
Thethesisadvisorisavotingmemberofthiscommittee.Onefacultymemberoftheprogramshould
beselectedtoserveasachairoftheThesisCommittee.Thiscommitteecanbethesameasthe
ComprehensiveExamCommittee.
3.GraduateAdvisor
TheChairoftheThesisCommitteeservesastheadvisortothestudentandwillmonitorhis/her
progress.TheChairmustbeamemberoftheProgram.Itcannotbeemphasizedenough,however,that
eachstudentisresponsibleforhis/herownprogress.
4.GuidelinesforSupervisionofThesisWork
1.Sinceallstudentspresenttheirworkeachyear,allGraduateFacultyshouldfollowtheprogressof
allstudents.Whenconcernsarisetheyshouldbediscussedimmediatelywiththestudent,theThesis
Advisorand/orthestudentsThesisCommittee.
2.Studentsareencouragedtomeeteverysixmonths,butmustmeetatleastonceayear,withtheir
ThesisCommittee.StudentsmustsubmitawrittenupdateontheirprogresstotheCommitteeatleast
oneweekbeforetheCommitteemeeting.TheChairoftheCommitteeshouldprovidethestudentand
theProgramDirectorwithawrittensummaryofthestudentsprogressandrecommendationsofthe

5.PreparationofThesisandThesisDefense
1.TheStaffAssistantoftheGraduateSchool(currently,FranOsterberg)holdsseminarstwiceayear
ontheproperformattingofthethesis.
2.TheThesisCommitteemustformallyapprovethewrittenthesisbeforethefinalexaminationcanbe
taken.WrittenPhDthesisapprovalfromthechairoftheThesisCommitteeisrequiredpriorto
schedulingofthethesiswiththeGraduateSchool.TheThesisApprovalFormmaybeobtainedfrom
theprogramadministrator.Furthermore,thethesisadvisormustfindthethesisacceptablepriorto
submissiontotherestofthecommittee.Itisinexcusableforeveryoneconcernedifthestudentreaches
thepointofhis/herPhDthesisdefenseandencountersmajordifficultieswiththethesis.

3.Inadditiontocompletingthethesisdocument,priortothedefenseofthethesis,eachCSDstudent
mustsubmitaminimumofoneoriginalresearchmanuscriptforpublicationinordertoreceivethe
PhD.Thepapermustbefirstauthoredbythestudent,andrepresentacomponentofthestudents
overallthesiswork.Secondormiddleauthorshiporauthorshipofareviewarticleorchapterdoesnot
meetthisrequirement.
4.ArrangementsforthethesisdefensemustbemadeintheGraduateSchoolofficeatleastthreeweeks
inadvance.Theexaminationmustbetakenatleastthreeweekspriortothedateonwhichthedegreeis
tobeconferred.DegreesareconferredinMayandDecember.Thestudentmustberegisteredatthe
timeofthethesisdefense.Inaddition,acopyofthethesismustbegiventotheThesisCommitteeat
leasttwoweeksbeforethedefense.
4.Thethesisdefenseisthefinalexaminationofthethesisandrelatedtopics.Itincludesanoral
presentationofthesalientpointsoftheresearch,itsconclusionsanditsintegrationwiththerestofthe
field.TheoralpresentationwillbeconductedbytheThesisCommitteeandonlymembersofthe
GraduateFacultymaybepresent.Thefinaldecisionregardingtheresultofthethesisdefenseismade
bytheCommittee.
5.AllcorrectionstothewrittenthesisrequiredbytheThesisCommitteemustbecompletedwithin
thirtydaysfromthedateofthethesisdefense.Thesigned,writtendocumentmustbesubmittedtothe
GraduateSchoolatthattime.
6.Thestudentmustreceiveaffirmativevotesfromthemajorityofthecommittee.Theexamination
maybeattemptedonlyonce.Disqualificationofthethesisexaminationresultsindismissalfromthe
GraduateProgramwithoutadegree.
7.ThestudentisresponsibleforprovidingaboundcopyofthethesistotheThesisAdvisor,the
membersoftheThesisCommittee,theProgramandtheGraduateSchool.

IV.GraduateSchoolstandards
A.Credits.TheGraduateSchoolrequiresatleast30semesterhoursincoursework(rotationsand
ResearchCSBI7650countascoursehours)and30semesterhoursofthesisresearchforthePhD
(researchhourscannotbeaccumulateduntilthesemesterbeforetheComprehensiveExamispassed).
AllworkundertakenasagraduatestudentmustbeincompliancewiththeacademicCodeofHonor
(seeAppendixAofUCDAMCGraduateStudentHandbook).
B.Maintenanceofa3.0GPA.AllstudentsmustmaintainanaverageofBorbetterintheircourse
work.StudentsareexpectedtoearnaBorbetterinallrequiredcourses.Onlyinexceptional
circumstancesmayaBinarequiredcoursebeacceptable,asdeterminedbypetitiontotheGAC.
RequiredcoursescompletedwithagradeofbelowBcannotbecountedtowardsPhDrequirements.
C.Preliminaryexam.Inordertocontinueintheprogram,astudentmustpassPartsIandIIofthe
PreliminaryExamattheendofthefirstyear.IfthePreliminaryexamisfailed,thestudentsrecord
willbereviewedbytheGAC.Atthispointthestudentmaybeaskedtoretakepartoftheexam,the
entireexam,orleavethePhDtrainingprogram.
D.RemedialandDisciplinaryActions.StudentswhosecumulativeGPAfallsbelow3.0willbe
placedonAcademicProbationbytheGraduateSchool.ThestudentmustearnaGPAof3.0ineachof
his/hernexttwosemestersinordertoberemovedfromAcademicProbation.TheGraduateSchool
requiresthatafterastudentisputonacademicprobation,he/shemustmaintaina3.0inallsubsequent
semesters.FailingtomeeteitherconditionwillleadtoimmediatedismissalfromtheGraduateSchool.
ABorbelowinanyrequiredcourseisconsideredunsatisfactoryacademicprogressandmorethan
oneBorbelowisgroundsforimmediatedismissalfromtheProgram.
Agraduatestudentwhoreceivesanunsatisfactorygradeinacourse(aBorbelow)mayrepeat
thatcourseonceorsuccessfullycompleteanalternativeassignment,uponwrittenrecommendation
fromtheGACandapprovalbytheGraduateSchoolDean(providedthecoursehasnotbeen
previouslyappliedtowardadegree).Thetwogradesreceivedwillbeaveragedincalculatingthegrade
pointaverage,andallgradesreceivedwillappearonthestudentstranscript.Thecoursemaybe
countedonlyoncetowardsatisfyingtheunitrequirementforthedegree.
Aftertwosemesters,aGACmeetingwillbeheldtodeterminethestudentsprogress.Ifthe
studentscumulativeGPAis3.0orabove,thestudentwillberemovedfromprobation.Ifthestudents
cumulativeGPAisbelow3.0,thechairoftheThesisCommittee,thethesisadvisorandthestudent
willmeetwiththeCSDSteeringCommittee.TheSteeringCommitteewillmakeoneofthefollowing
determinations:
1.Thestudentisnotingoodacademicstandingandwillbeplacedonprobationagainfornot
morethan30days.
2.Thestudentisnotingoodacademicstandingandwillbereleasedfromtheprogram.
AllmeetingswillbethoroughlydocumentedandgiventotheProgramAdministratorforplacement
intothestudentsfile.

E.ChangeinThesisLab.Ifastudentleavesathesislabforanyreason,(butisstillconsideredbythe
CSDGACtobeingoodacademicstanding)thestudenthas1currentsemester(butnomore
than90days)torelocatetoanotherthesislabanddetermineanewthesisadvisorif
necessary.Itisthestudentsresponsibilitytolocateanotherthesislaband/oradvisor.
Withinthose90days,thestudentmustrotateforaminimumof6weeksinapotentialnew
advisorslab,sothatthefinaldecisiontojointhenewlabcanbemadewithinthe1
semester/90daywindow.
F.TimeLimitofPhDStudies.StudentshavesixyearsfromthetimetheyenterGraduateSchoolto
completeallrequirementsforthedegree.Continuationaftersixyearsrequirestheapproval
ofthestudentsThesisCommitteeandtheCSDSteeringCommittee.Itwillalsobe
necessarytopassasecondcomprehensiveexamination,similarincontenttothefirst,before
athesisdefensecanbescheduled.
G.Leaveofabsence.ItisthepolicyoftheCSDprogramtograntleaveofabsencesonlyunder
extremecircumstances.AformallettermustbesubmittedtotheGACandprogramdirector
explainingthereasonsaleaveofabsenceisnecessary.Beforetheleaveistakenitmustbeapproved
bytheGACandtheGraduateSchool.Afterastudentjoinsathesislab,thePImustalsoapprovethe
leaveofabsence.AspertherulesoftheGraduateSchool,only15daysofpaidleaveisguaranteed,
afterthattimeperioditisunderthediscretionoftheprogramandthePI.
V.ObligationsandRecordKeeping
A.Attendance.AllgraduatestudentsarerequiredtoattendtheweeklyCells,Developmentand
Cancer(CDC)seminars(usually,butnotalways,heldonWednesdaysatnoon)andspecialized
researchforums.Theseseminarsareamixtureoftalksbyinvitedspeakersandresearchreportsfrom
thefaculty,studentsandpostdoctoralfellowsinlaboratoriesoftheCellBiology,StemCellsand
DevelopmentProgramfaculty.
Thestudentsalsoorganizeabimonthlyjournalclub,andallCSDstudentsarerequiredtoparticipate.
Allgraduatestudentsarerequiredtoattendpostrotationalseminars,comprehensiveexaminations,
studentupdatepresentations,andThesisDefenseSeminarsgivenbyCSDprogramstudents.
Allnotebooks,originaldataandreagentsfromrotationalandthesisworkarethepropertyofthe
advisorandmustbeleftwiththeadvisoratthecompletionofthework.
Itisthestudentsresponsibilitytoregisterforcoursesinatimelymanneralllatefeesandfinance
chargeswillbetheresponsibilityofthestudent.
B.ColoradoResidency.FirstyearstudentswhoareUScitizensmustobtainaColoradoDrivers
LicenseatthetimeofarrivalattheUniversityofColoradoSchoolofMedicinetobeginthe
processofestablishingColoradoresidency.Ifresidencyhasnotbeenestablishedbythe
beginningofthesecondyear,thestudentisresponsibleforthenonresidentportionof
tuitionthatexceedstheresidentassessment.ThepaperworkforestablishingColorado
ResidencymustbefiledwiththeRegistrarpriortosecondyearregistration.

togetherandinteractonascientific/intellectuallevelsoastocultivatenewinteractionsand
strengthenexistingones;and2)toprovideanopportunityforincomingfirstyearCSDand
BiomedicalSciencesProgram(BSP)graduatestudents,and1stand2ndyearMSTPstudents
tobecomefamiliarwiththeresearchactivitiesandfacultywithintheCSDProgram.The
retreatisusuallyheldinSeptemberorOctober.Currentseniorstudents(2ndyearand
beyond)areexpectedtopresenttheirworkeitherviaaposteroratalk.

applicantsvisitourprogramforinterviews.ItisintheProgramsbestinteresttoattractandretainthe
