Lesson Objective(s):
Students will:
Explain the importance and major issues of the 1964 presidential election

Recall proper techniques needed to use Microsoft publisher.

Introduce the Learning Activity:
I will include a nine minute warm up activity. Students will watch the 1964 campaign
advertisement called Accomplishments It is about four minutes long. It can be found here:
http://www.livingroomcandidate.org/commercials/1964 Students will take notes during a five
minute whole class discussion following the video based on the following questions:
1. What do you think about the use of Kennedys assassination in this advertisement? Is it too
far? Is it smart?
2. What does the campaign hope to gain by implying that Johnson was "thrust suddenly" into the
White House?
3. What does the campaign hope to gain by showing clips from Lyndon Johnsons speech to
Congress that we watched during yesterdays class?
4. What ideas were brought up in the advertisement that we learned about in previous classes?
5. How is this different from modern advertisements?
This activity will get students thinking about the importance and major issues of the 1964
presidential election, which is what I want them to learn. I feel that the video and discussion will
motivate students and get them interested in the lesson because the video is interesting and
different from what they are used to watching.
Provide Information:
I will have described the early years of the Johnson administration during the previous class. I
will give a mini-lecture for about six minutes reviewing the information from last class and
introducing new information. The mini lecture will cover the following information: Warren
Commission, the Great Society, the War on Poverty, and Cold War developments. I will answer
student questions during the mini-lecture.
Provide Practice:
We have now discussed the years leading up to the 1964 presidential election and about the
candidates and the issues. Students will independently list three to five issues that they feel were
important during the 1964 campaign. After a few minutes, they will pair up with one other
classmate. Students will look at campaign advertisements on the website listed above to help
them understand important campaign issues. Students will use Microsoft publisher to prepare a
campaign advertisement. The completed advertisement should include at least three major issues
that were important during the 1964 presidential election. Students will be given time in class to
work with their partner. Students will brainstorm with their partner for four to five minutes. We
will discuss possible answers as a class for an additional four to five minutes. Students will work
on the assignment and present their ideas for the rest of the class.
Provide Knowledge of Results:

I will give verbal feedback to students based on their answers to questions during the whole class
discussions. If students do not give all of the answers that I am looking for, then I will add
additional possible answers. I will praise all genuine attempts to answer in order to encourage
future participation. When students are working independently and in groups, I will walk around
the room to monitor their work. I will ask them how they are doing and I will make sure that they
are staying on task and making progress. I will walk around the room throughout the entire
period and I will check if the students need any help or have any questions. I will not be giving
any written feedback on this particular day. When they turn in their final projects, I will give
them written feedback.
Review the Activity:
Students will have eight minutes to write an informal paragraph answering the following
question, using their notes. What do you feel are the three most important things to remember
about the years 1963-1964? Why were these years so critical to the larger theme of the Cold War
that we have been discussing? Volunteers will share their answers for the remainder of the class.
Method of Assessment:
The final assessment of todays objectives will be next week when I get to see their final project.
How they answer questions in class will give me some measurement of what they have learned.
When I walk around during group and individual work, I will be able to assess how they well
they are comprehending the material.
