BOOK IV

CHAPTER 26. How Sir Uwain rode with the damosel of sixty year of age,
and how he gat the prize at tourneying

Now turn we unto Sir Uwain, that rode westward with his damosel of three score winter of age,
and she brought him thereas was a tournament nigh the march of Wales. And at that tournament Sir
Uwain smote down thirty knights, therefore was given him the prize, and that was a gerfalcon, and a
white steed trapped with cloth of gold. So then Sir Uwain did many strange adventures by the means of
the old damosel, and so she brought him to a lady that was called the Lady of the Rock, the which was
much courteous.
So there were in the country two knights that were brethren, and they were called two perilous
knights, the one knight hight Sir Edward of the Red Castle, and the other Sir Hugh of the Red Castle;
and these two brethren had disherited the Lady of the Rock of a barony of lands by their extortion. And
as this knight was lodged with this lady she made her complaint to him of these two knights.
Madam, said Sir Uwain, they are to blame, for they do against the high order of knighthood, and the
oath that they made; and if it like you I will speak with them, because I am a knight of King Arthurs, and I will
entreat them with fairness; and if they will not, I shall do battle with them, and in the defence of your right.
Gramercy, said the lady, and thereas I may not acquit you, God shall.
So on the morn the two knights were sent for, that they should come thither to speak with the
Lady of the Rock, and wit ye well they failed not, for they came with an hundred horse. But when this
lady saw them in this manner so big, she would not suer Sir Uwain to go out to them upon no surety
ne for no fair language, but she made him speak with them over a tower. But nally these two brethren
would not be entreated, and answered that they would keep that they had.
Well, said Sir Uwain, then will I ght with one of you, and prove that ye do this lady wrong.
That will we not, said they, for and we do battle, we two will ght with one knight at once, and therefore
if ye will ght so, we will be ready at what hour ye will assign. And if ye win us in battle the lady shall have her
lands again.

Ye say well, said Sir Uwain, therefore make you ready so that ye be here to-morn in the defence of the
ladys right.

Intressons-nous maintenant au sort de sire Yvain, chevauchant en direction de louest avec son
accompagnatrice sexagnaire, qui le conduisit un tournoi non loin de la marche de Galles. Lors de ce
tournoi, sire Yvain t mordre la poussire trente chevaliers et remporta par consquent la plus haute
rcompense, un gerfaut et un talon blanc, harnach de drap dor. Ainsi donc sire Yvain connut de
nombreuses aventures inhabituelles grce la vieille demoiselle qui, par exemple, le conduisit auprs
dune dame appele la Dame de la Roche, dune grande courtoisie.
Or il y avait dans le pays deux chevaliers qui taient frres, quon qualiait de redoutables : sire
douard du Chteau Rouge et sire Hugues du Chteau Rouge ; et ces deux frres avaient spoli la Dame
de la Roche de sa baronnie par extorsion. Notre chevalier tant hberg chez cette dame, elle se plaignit deux auprs de lui.
Madame, lui assura sire Yvain, ils sont blmables, car leurs agissements sont contraires au grand ordre
de la chevalerie et au serment quils ont prt ; et si cela a votre agrment, je leur parlerai en ma qualit de chevalier du roi Arthur et leur proposerai un arrangement pour leur laisser une chance ; sils ne veulent pas en dmordre, je me battrai avec eux pour dfendre vos droits.
Dieu vous le rende !, rpondit la dame, et comme je ne suis pas en mesure de vous rcompenser, Dieu y
pourvoira !
Le lendemain matin, donc, les deux chevaliers furent mands an quils viennent sexpliquer
avec la Dame de la Roche, et sachez bien quils ny manqurent pas, car ils se prsentrent la tte de
cent cavaliers. Mais quand la dame constata leur prsence en force, elle ne voulut plus entendre parler
de laisser sire Yvain aller au-devant deux, quelles que fussent les garanties et les belles paroles, et le t
sadresser eux du haut dune tour. Mais en n de compte les deux frres restrent intransigeants,
rpondant que le statu quo tait leur convenance.
Eh bien, rpondit sire Yvain, dans ce cas je me battrai contre lun dentre vous et dmontrerai [par ma
victoire] que vous lsez cette dame.
Nous nous y refusons, rpliqurent-ils, car si nous engageons le combat [judiciaire], ce sera nous deux
ensemble contre un, et si vous acceptez de livrer bataille dans ces conditions, nous serons prts lheure que vous
xerez ; si vous lemportez sur nous au combat, cette dame recouvrera ses terres.
On ne saurait mieux dire, conclut sire Yvain, soyez donc prts vous trouver ici demain matin face au
champion du droit de cette dame.

voit dans cette aventure dYvain la fusion (conation) par Malory de deux pisodes du
Perlesvaus. (Incidemment, lauteur crit Malorys Ywain visits an elderly lady named the
Lady of the Rock [cest moi qui souligne]: il sagit dune confusion avec laccompagnatrice, la Damoisele Chenue, septuagnaire en ralit1.)
