INTRODUCTION

The unconfined compression test is usually used for measurement of an

undrained strength of cohesive soil because of the simplicity of the test technique. This
test, however, is inapplicable for such apecimens as crack clay, very solid clay, and
clayey soil which contains extra fraction of sand.In these cases, an other strength test
method such as the triaxial compression test, must be applied. In this paper, result from
the unconfined compression test for some cohesive soils were compressive test on the
same soils for the purpose of investigating the characteristics of the unconfined
compression test.

OBJECTIVE
To determine the shear strength of the cohesive soil

MATERIALS AND APPARATUS

Soil

Mold cylinder

Knife

Vernier caliper

Weighing machine

Compression test machine

Procedure

1. Make a soil sample by inserting into the soil samples prepared

mold cylinder

2. Compress the soil samples and cut out of the cylinder mold

3. Remove the soil sample, weighing heavy, area, diameter and

length of land

4. Place the soil sample in a confined compression test

machine

5. Record the soil until the soil sample test failure

6. Perform the same test on the second and third samples

7. Draw the shape of soil failure

Discussion

-In the unconfined test, no radial stress is applied to the sample

-The effect stress path is unknown since pore water pressure changes
are not normally measured.
-This test is considered as undrained shear test assuming that there is
no moisture loss from the specimen during the test.

[
Conclusion

after conducting laboratory tests on soil, it can be known that the

unconfined compression test is one tool that can be used to obtain the
shear strength of soil, the situation is not drained soil [without any
pressure dikenankan around. unconfined compression testing sample is
said to fail when cracks occur in samples
