BIDDING ROUND
TO GRANT

OFFSHORE
LICENSE CONTRACTS

The offshore sedimentary basins, due to their location, are one of the least explored

geological areas in Peru, although for more than a century were discovered hydrocarbons in
the north coast. Currently, this area has the highest daily and cumulative oil production in Peru.

80

The basins located in the central

part of the continental shelf and in
the south of the country, are one
of the least explored areas, despite
having geological and geophysical
information of regional nature.

parallel to the shoreline, following

the main trend of offshore basins,
thereby increasing the probability to
define complete structures, in the
same direction and with enough area
to conduct the development of a

70
117

67

For this reason, has been

prioritized the promotion and

contracting of these areas for
hydrocarbon exploration. For this,
has been defined nine blocks in five
offshore basins, to be integrated in
the International Bidding Round.

Block Z-50 borders to the East with Blocks with current contracts
Z-48 and Z-49, to the South borders with Block Z-51, and West with
the Lima basin boundary. This block has a fair amount of 2D seismic
data, but has not identified any exploration prospects yet.

1000 m: Bathymetry

Main factors for block configuration:

2D seismic in Block Z-50, Lima basin.

1. Basin configuration.
2. Petroleum System hypothetical Paleozoic (same OS of the
proposed well in Pisco offshore basin next to drill).

Unexplored basin, with many geological

possibilities. Lack to confirm the Petroleum

System in the basin. It needs more geological and
geophysical studies.

There is recent technical information in

Trujillo and Pisco basins, surrounding the area.

It is estimated that Lima basin has the same
Petroleum System than Trujillo basin.

Cretaceous

Maturity Model in the Cretaceous:

93-75 Seismic Line located between
the northern part of Pisco basin and
southern of Lima Basin, showing
Cretaceous kitchen.

There have been conducted geological

and geophysical studies by various companies
in the coastal areas of Lima, Pisco and Paracas,
having collected 49 samples for geochemical
analysis. From these analyzes it was concluded
that the Ambo Group of Carboniferous is the
main Source Rock of Pisco and Lima Basins,
being the same source rock of hydrocarbons in
Camisea.

Block Z-53 is located between the basins Pisco to the South and
Lima to the North, separated by a structural high intermediate, and
borders to the East by Block Z-33.

Blocks Z-54 and Z-55 in Pisco basin, border to the East with
line of 7 miles of artisanal fishing protection and Islands Systems,
Islets and Puntas Guaneras. Block Z-54 also partially borders to the
East with the Paracas National Reserve. To the West, the boundary of
the 3 Blocks is approximately Pisco basin boundary.

2D seismic, prospects and leads in Block Z-53, Lima-Pisco basins.

All of these Blocks have good amount of recently 2D seismic

information, but no exploratory Wells have been drilled in the
offshore area. The Prospects and leads showed have been defined
from the 2D seismic.
Main factors for Blocks configuration:
1. Prospects and leads with exploration probabilities.
2. Existence of an Petroleum System hypothetical Paleozoic,
next to be confirmed with drilling.

B L O C K

B L O C K

Inside Pisco Basin has been identified an active

Petroleum System with a Carboniferous Source Rock,

capable to generate hydrocarbons, mainly light oil and
gas-condensate.

In outcrops were observed Excellent Reservoir

Rocks in Choros Formation of the Tertiary, with

porosity and permeability of 34% and 533 milidarcies,
respectively.

Sandstones with a strong oil smell in Choros

Formation, suggest that hydrocarbon generation
comes from Ambo Group of the Carboniferous.

Dark limestone from Pariatambo Formation of the

Cretaceous with strong oil smell, could be principal or
secondary Reservoir Rock.
1000 m: Bathymetry

2D seismic, prospects and leads in Block Z-55, Pisco basin.

The field geology and seismic interpretation, as

well as drillings made through Oceanographic Drilling
Program (ODP) have identified possible Seal Rocks
present in the basin, which belong to Pisco Formation
of the Upper Miocene, recovering the reservoirs of
Choros Formation.
Tectonic trenches and sub-basins types of pullapart from post-Eocene age, associated with strikeslip faults and gravitational and rotational movements
were caused by a major extensional event, being this
predominant structural style for hydrocarbon traps
forming. This structural style was recently confirmed
by field geology and a new seismic interpretation at
regional level.

database of 2D seismic, and have identified 6 and 4 leads respectively.

Main factors for Blocks configuration:

1. The West boundary of Trujillo basin.
2. The presence of a hypothetical Petroleum System in Trujillo
basin.

Lobos and Morsa North exploratory

wells found significant samples of oil during the

drilling. Also, has been detected and obtained

hydrocarbon samples in natural outcrops on the sea
surface, which have demonstrated the existence of an
active Petroleum System in this basin.

To the north of Trujillo, in Talara basin, the

most important Source Rock is Muerto Formation
(Lower Cretaceous). In Trujillo Basin, Lobos 1X
well found a shale powerful section of the Upper

Cretaceous that possibly

reached the level
of maturity in some
depocenters.

Mollendo basin is a structural depression

between the Coast Cordillera and the Peruvian

Precambrian Metamorphic Complex, which is
covered by clastic and carbonate sediments of
the Paleozoic, Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous,
extending westward into Mollendo basin.
Tertiary sequences dominated by deltaicfluvial clastic sediments and marine cover the
oldest rocks on a discordance.
Have been found some asphalt layers
in Lower and Middle Jurassic formations,
indicating the presence of potential Source
Rocks in this basin completely unexplored,
with many probabilities for hydrocarbon
