Application Notes:
1) The above table applied to welds 1/2" or less where welding requirements are not covered by other
ALSTOM documents. Contact Pressure Parts Engineering for welds not covered.
2) Unless noted on other ALSTOM Engineering documents, preheat is not required when metal
temperature is over 50 F.
3) When A387 Grade 22 material exceeds 0.375" apply a 350 F preheat to material to be welded.
4) E7018-B2L is preferred, but E8018-B2 is acceptable.
5) E8018-B3L is preferred, but E9018-B3 is acceptable.
6) E7018 is preferred but E7018-B2L is acceptable.
General Notes
A) GMAW and SAW processes are also acceptable provided the mechanical properties and the chemistry
of the deposited weld metal are equivalent to the SMAW filler metal shown.
B) The FCAW process is acceptable for welding carbon steel provided the process selected requires and is
used with a shielding gas.
C) HS/HCr = U.S. Steel's Corten Hi-Temp, and Bethlehem's Mayari-R.
D) ALSTOM/LA = U.S. Steel's Corten A and B and ASTM A588 Gr. A.
E) Low Alloy = HS/HCr, Alstom/LA & A-387 Grades 11, 12 & 22.

For P7 material, hold for one hour per inch of thickness, with 1/4
hour minimum holding time, furnace cool to 1100F, then air cool.
Prior to beginning the heat treatment, the metal temperature must
be under 400F.
Post weld treatment at 1250 F may be used in lieu of 1150 F
X, XI
provided it is specifically permitted by the Welding Procedure
Specifications.
If attachments or tangent tube welds are applied to weld buildup
XI
pads which were heat treated in accordance with Par. 8.3.1, heat
treatment of the attachment or tangent tube weld to the pad is not
required.
X
Upon the completion of welding of Grade 9Cr-1Mo (P No. 5B
Group 1) and Grade 91 (P No. 5B Group 2) materials the weldment
shall be cooled to 200F or under, preferably ambient, prior to
reheating the material.
