SUBJECT: Selecting Electrodes for Manually Welding

Attachments to Superheaters and Reheaters

1.0 This standard provides Engineering the

information for selecting preheat and electrodes
required by the shop for attachments to tubing
welds, welds between tangent tubes and
attachment to attachment welds. The data
pertains to manual shop welds only.
2.0 The electrode and preheat information is
required to be put on simplified superheater and
reheater assembly drawings for all shop manual
welds designed to the requirements of Standard
No. 28-94, Index 17.2 for the attachment to
attachment welds.
2.1 See Table I for base material
groupings.
2.2 See Table II for selecting electrode
and preheat selections for non-pressure part to
non-pressure roof seal welds.
2.3 See Table III for non-pressure part to
non-pressure part welds not covered by
Paragraph 2.2.
2.4 See Table IV for alphabetical
electrode identification.
2.5 See Tables X and XI for selecting
electrode and preheat selections for non-pressure
part attachments to pressure parts design to
Standard No. 28-94, Index 17.2.

Application Notes:
1) The above table applied to welds 1/2" or less where welding requirements are not covered by other
ALSTOM documents. Contact Pressure Parts Engineering for welds not covered.
2) Unless noted on other ALSTOM Engineering documents, preheat is not required when metal
temperature is over 50 F.
3) When A387 Grade 22 material exceeds 0.375" apply a 350 F preheat to material to be welded.
4) E7018-B2L is preferred, but E8018-B2 is acceptable.
5) E8018-B3L is preferred, but E9018-B3 is acceptable.
6) E7018 is preferred but E7018-B2L is acceptable.
General Notes
A) GMAW and SAW processes are also acceptable provided the mechanical properties and the chemistry
of the deposited weld metal are equivalent to the SMAW filler metal shown.
B) The FCAW process is acceptable for welding carbon steel provided the process selected requires and is
used with a shielding gas.
C) HS/HCr = U.S. Steel's Corten Hi-Temp, and Bethlehem's Mayari-R.
D) ALSTOM/LA = U.S. Steel's Corten A and B and ASTM A588 Gr. A.
E) Low Alloy = HS/HCr, Alstom/LA & A-387 Grades 11, 12 & 22.
* This electrode was previously designated as E-8018-B2L in SFA-5.5.
