Twenties of last century, namely the Venini furnace. In the early years
its creations were designed by Napoleone Martinuzzi, Carlo Scarpa,
Gi Ponti, Tommaso Buzi, Pietro Chiesa; more recently the company
has worked with Ettore Sottsass, Alessandro Mendini, Mario Bellini,
Studio Job and the Campana brothers.
It was none other than Carlo Scarpa who made an important leap
ahead while acting as artistic director from the mid-Thirties until
the Forties, with experiments that followed in the wake of the great
Venetian crafts tradition, as hammered glass, woven surfaces
finished with grinder, decorations with granules and threads,
and brushstrokes. Such original effects could only be achieved thanks
to the extraordinary manual skill of the glassworkers of Murano.
A gestural plasticity which gives every object, even if guided by the
indications provided by a designer, the unique quality of the one-off
piece. Recently just to mention some of the most important recent
achievements the British brand Established&Sons has developed,
precisely in collaboration with Venini, a vat collection of objects
together with leading international designers as Konstantin Grcic
and the Bouroullec brothers. The collection was presented during
the last Furniture Salon of 2010.
But Venini also works with other important contemporary designers,
as for instance Luca Nichetto, who also comes from Murano.
Nichetto has in 2010 realized the collections Otto (offered in a limited
edition of five pieces) and Arillo.
The Arillo collection comprises a series of vases with a clean
geometry, in which the Venetian glass tradition of objects featuring
threads twisted into spiral shape has been merged with Oriental
echoes, suggested by the profile inspired by that of Chinese lanterns.
Otto is on the contrary built on the basis of the timeless model of the
cylinder-shaped vase, evolved into a tapering volume, which allows
one to glimpse the eight layers of glass and the different internal
Still on the subject of chairs, but with a new version of the material,
in the form of a new elastic membrane for a new concept of comfort,
we find the informal experiment of a master as Pierluigi Cerri who,
with his Apta chair, sees a new ergonomics of the chair.
The performance is entrusted to an elastic sheet in polyisolprene
which stretches to adapt to the behaviour of the seated person;
an exploration of a new fitting of design which only the type
of material makes possible, where the objects are adapted, almost
tailored to the behaviour and body of the user.
The other major area in which this material is being reinvented is that
of recycling and of so-called disposable products. While it is not
the priority of this excursus to investigate the frontier of eco-design,
it has to be stressed that recycled plastic has acquired a hybrid
aesthetics which adds value to new products: we will examine two
material mixes created by two companies, respectively, which are
perhaps not by chance Scandinavian.
The first, developed by Sodra, is a bioplastic made from pressed
paper and biodegradable plastic obtained from corn starch, used
to make lamps folded like origami and stackable childrens chairs;
the second is the result of the experience of Artek, which has
in collaboration with Shigeru Ban developed a composite/mix
of plastic and wood fibre, characterized by an iconic colour that
reminds of natural, untreated wood, used to create furniture systems,
also for community uses. If these latter examples make us reflect
on an almost naturalized appearance (also due to the opacity
of the surfaces) of a material that has always been perceived

Il 90% del vetro prodotto nel mondo, il cosidetto vetro float, viene fabbricato
con il sistema a galleggiamento inventato da Sir Alastair Pilkington nel 1952.
Prevede che la massa di vetro fusa venga versata su un bagno di stagno;
90% of the glass produced in the world, so-called float glass, is manufactured
using the floating system invented by Sir Alastair Pilkington in 1952.
This calls for the mass of molten glass to be poured onto a bath of tin.
The glass floats, forming a perfectly smooth surface on both sides.
From 1973 to 1980 Pilkington was Chairman of Pilkington Glass which, after
many years of activity and the merger with the NSG Group, has now confirmed
its position as market leader in the production of sheets of glass for the building
and automotive industries. The use of glass in contemporary architecture
is increasing constantly and designers have many demands: non-reflecting glass,
low-emission glass, solar control glass, laminated safety glass, self-cleaning
glass, etc. The companys on-going research activities enable the production
of goods featuring a high technological value and high performance levels,
but without forgetting the transparency and lightness that only glass can offer.

Along the 200 metres of the tunnel, the strip is heated and cooled
to controlled temperatures, until it reaches ambient temperature.
This process enables the development of the stresses inside the
material to be controlled so as to avoid subsequent breakages at this
stage or in later stages of the processing, and so as to obtain perfectly
transparent glass with absolutely flat surfaces.
The sheet is then washed using nozzles to eliminate any impurities
and is passed through high-precision optical scanners that check it for
the presence of malformations (bubbles, abnormal stresses, impurities,
etc. They compare the material with reference parameters to check its
compliance with the applicable standards. The last stage consists
of laser cutting of the glass into sheets of the required length.
The Porto Marghera float glass furnace is capable of producing
600 to 700 tons of glass a day with a continuous production 24
hours a day 365 days in the year. Sheets of float glass measuring
6,000x3,210mm are produced for the building industry.
They are loaded onto special supports, packaged and prepared for
shipment to customers or they may be sent for rolling.
The laminating plant, started up in 1996, can be used to stick two
or more sheets to one another, sandwiching a polyvinyl (PVB) film
between them.
This increases the resistance of the composite sheet, in addition
to retaining the fragments of glass in the event of breakage.
The heat and pressure exerted on the sheets, piled on top of one
another, cause any air bubbles in the laminated glass to be eliminated
and make it transparent so that visually the effect is that of a single
sheet, obviously much thicker.
The increased thickness due to the presence of the plastic film and the
addition of a third sheet of glass give rise to stratified safety glass that
has an even higher performance level. The cycle is continuous, with
no breaks, and as clean as possible.
