DRIVE: development programme for animation practice

Animate Projects invites applications for DRIVE, a 10 month creative development programme
for UK based artists and animators. The initiative has been developed with, and is generously
supported by, Jerwood Charitable Foundation, and is also supported with public funding by
the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
DRIVE offers artists working with animation support to develop professional, craft, creative
(rather than technical) and business skills, through individual mentoring and group workshops.
As part of the process we also want to engage a wider professional and public audience with
creative animation practice, through events and online documentation of participants' process
and progress.
What you can expect, and what will be expected of you
DRIVE is bespoke rather than prescriptive. Its a lab, not a lecture series: facilitating access to
specialist mentoring, and encouraging the cross pollination of ideas, within a challenging and
supportive peer network. We want participants to gain from each others different experience
and perspective: to share ideas and engage in a dialogue. There will be homework, targets
and deadlines.

The DRIVE core programme will comprise:

one-to-one mentoring and support

bespoke support for project specific needs
follow up support from Animate Projects
three group meet up days/workshops, with project presentations, feedback and dialogue,
and sessions on creative business
critical peer review
online documentation/dissemination of participants experience and project development

We will select up to five participants who will receive a 3,000 bursary towards their proposed
project development costs, and additional allowances towards fees for agreed specialist
advice and mentoring and towards travel and accommodation costs to attend meet ups.
Meet ups are expected to take place in September 2015 (in London), December 2015 (during
the Animate OPEN: Parts & Labour exhibition, at QUAD, Derby) and March 2016 (in London).

Eligibility
DRIVE aims to address the development needs of UK based independent, innovative, creative
animators/artists. We are seeking people who want the opportunity to develop their practice
and ambitious animation projects. We are aiming for a diverse group of participants people
whose work finds its audience in different contexts, including gallery, cinema, public spaces,
or as part of live performance, and online.
Participants will be expected to fully commit to the programme, and this will include attending
the group meet ups, engaging in constructive dialogue with other participants, and
documenting the development of their own project and practice.
You should have at least two years relevant professional experience, but this may be in a
different field eg you may be an illustrator or visual artist wanting to work in animation.
Students and recent graduates are not eligible. The programme is not for people working in
more mainstream fields of animation (eg wanting to develop television series, other
commercial projects, or narrative features). Artists that have received professional
development support from Animate in the last three years are not eligible. You need to be
resident and able to work in the UK.
Applicants will need to:

Demonstrate a track record of making strong work

Outline how they will genuinely benefit from the support
Outline a project that has potential to be realised and reach an audience
Demonstrate a committed approach to what the programme offers, and a willingness to
learn, engage and collaborate
