VILLAGE OF GERMANTOWN
For your convenience the Village Public Works Department is scheduling a
Spring brush pick-up starting the second Monday in May (May 11, 2015).
Although this process will take approximately 2 weeks to complete, we will
not be extending the pick-up, or picking up brush that is put out after Sunday,
May 10, 2015.
Limbs shall be no more than 6 foot in length and placed at the curb with the
trunk facing the street for easier handling. Please tie branches 2 or smaller
into bundles no larger than 2 feet in diameter using twine or light rope.
Your cooperation with this will greatly increase the efficiency at which we
can pick up the brush. Brush in containers WILL NOT be picked up
as too often there is yard waste in the bottom of the container. Yard
waste and leaves are not included in the pick-up. We encourage
you to take your yard waste to the Recycling Center.
Please be aware that raking leaves into the street area is against
Village Ordinance and the Village of Germantown WILL NOT
pick up such leaves. Again, we encourage you to take your
leaves to the Recycling Center.

From a basement to international sales

Wagner Companies products made locally, sold globally
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
A company known for rails has its start
in a basement, and also produces a product that plays off a day made famous on a
legendary television comedy.
Wagner Companies is located at
10600 Brown Deer Road and employs
approximately 150 people.
Were a Milwaukee-based manufacturer, (and) its a family business, Wagner
Companies Executive Vice President Tony
Leto said in a recent interview.
The official legal entity is R & B
Wagner, Inc., and it is named after Robert
and Barbara Wagner, who are the children
of company founder Adolph Wagner.
Robert and Barbara Wagner are still with
the company.
We like manufacturing in Milwaukee,
and we enjoy doing that. We like producing
as much as we can rather than importing it,
Leto said.
The companys Web site states that
Wagner manufactures and stocks standard
products for metal fabricators and produces
custom products primarily for handrails.
The company is comprised of three divisions: architectural catalog, architectural
custom and Wagner Industrial.
What people know us for is metal components for railings custom and stock,
Leto said.
The history of the Wagner family in the
metals industry dates back to 1850, when
Julius Wagner started a blacksmith shop in

Buffalo, NY. Wagner moved to Milwaukee

in 1870 and started an iron shop.
What is now Wagner Companies
began to take shape in 1955 when Adolph
Wagner began working on products in his
basement, designing approximately 40
products, including two sizes of elbows,
flanges and connectors.
Today those forty-some products have
grown into 11,000 catalog items, the companys Web site states.
Leto explained that while Adolph
Wagner created the products, he didnt
have the manufacturing capacity, so he outsourced the manufacturing to his designs.
He eventually bought the company that
made the parts, Advance Stamping Co.
The original designs are still with us.
We still make parts he designed in 1955,
Leto said.
Leto said the company has a very good
reputation for quality and has been in the
metal railing industry for a long time.
We tend to maintain our quality and
our flexibility, he said.
Over the years the company purchased
other firms, which were joined into one firm
in 2001, and Wagner Companies moved
all its operations into the Brown Deer Road
facility in 2002.
Leto explained that the process of creating railings involves bending and welding, but how it is done has changed through
advances in technology in both the engineering and the equipment that is more programmable in terms of bending and laying
out the railings.

Thomas J. McKillen.
Its basically bending and welding, its
just how you get more efficient doing it,
Leto said.
The company has an international
reach, selling products in the Canada,
United Kingdom, Australia, and South
Africa. He said that while the company will
go to international trade shows, it will be
there to support local distributors selling
their products.
Certain products we have are patent-

ed and proprietary so we sell them all over

the world, Leto said.
In 2008, the company sought and
attained ISO certification. Leto explained
that ISO is a system that certifies a company has processes in place for maintaining
quality that are followed. He explained that
Wagner does business for contract metal
manufacturers.

Relay for Life for Quarry

Communities May 29
American Cancer Societys popular
fundraiser is a combined-community event
for Germantown, Lannon, Lisbon,
Menomonee Falls, Pewaukee, and Sussex
Relay for Life of Quarry Communities
(Germantown,
Lannon,
Lisbon,
Menomonee Falls, Pewaukee, and Sussex)
is still in need of teams, cancer survivors and
caregivers who want to have fun helping
kick cancer to the curb May 29 from 6 p.m.
to 9 a.m. (May 30) at Germantown High
School, W180 N11501 River Lane.
The more teams we have, the more
money we raise to fight cancer, said
Allison Klein, local American Cancer
Society representative. Teams are the
heart and soul of every Relay event.
Relay for Life of Quarry Communities is
a 15-hour, family-friendly fundraiser that
combines team participation in a walking
relay with music, entertainment, games,
food, a silent auction, and even camping.
Each team must have at least one walker on
the track at all times.
Teams of friends, teams of families, and
teams from area businesses, churches,
organizations, and schools solicit sponsors

and donations. Funds also are raised from

activities that occur throughout the event,
Klein said.
Because Relay For Life is such an inspirational occasion, we want as many cancer
survivors and caregivers as possible to participate, especially during the emotional
opening ceremonies when they take the celebratory first lap that kicks off the festivities, Klein said
Participants arent required to stay for
the duration of the relay, but many do.
A lot of teams set up camp around the
track and stick around for the camaraderie, Klein said. Some rest, and some
pull all-nighters and experience everything
that goes on.
Relay For Life is the American Cancer
Societys most popular and successful
fundraiser. About four million people participated in more than 6,000 Relay events
worldwide in 2014.

WEDDING SHOWCASE
How to manage seating arrangements
After all of the invitations have been
sent and RSVPs returned, engaged couples
who are including a sit-down dinner as part
of their wedding receptions must figure out
the seating arrangements for their guests.
Such a task can be both fun and stressful.
The fun of making seating arrangements
stems from reuniting friends and family
members who couples feel will enjoy one
another's company and make the reception
that much more fun. But feuding family
members can make the task of assigning

seats somewhat stressful. Couples need not

be relationship experts to plan seating
arrangements that ensure guests have a
good time. The following tips can help couples enjoy the process of mapping out their
wedding reception seating assignments as
much as possible.
Make assignments by hand. While
there is software designed specifically to
help couples map out seating assignments,
many couples find it easier to do the seating assignments by hand, which allows cou-

ples more freedom to rearrange tables. In

addition, making the seating arrangements
by hand ensures that couples spread out
guests who might not get along.
Don't seat guests in the hopes of
quashing old conflicts. While the jovial spirit of a wedding ceremony and reception
might seem like the perfect atmosphere for
feuding friends or family members to bury
the hatchet with regard to old conflicts, this
leaves open the potentially ugly possibility
that such conflicts might escalate. Couples

Protecting the wedding gown

By Tresa Erickson
Imagine spending a small fortune on a
wedding dress, only to ruin it an hour into
the reception when you accidentally bump
into someone and slosh red wine all over
the front. Not a pretty picture, is it? Well, if
you aren't careful, that is exactly what could
happen to you.
Wedding dresses require protection
from the moment brides pick them up and
bring them home. Once home, you must
find a cool, dry place to hang your dress,
preferably out of heavy traffic. Leave the
dress in the garment bag, and in the event
you need to try it on before the wedding,
do so carefully, making sure you return the
dress to the hanger with care.
Prior to your wedding, check with your
florist about your flowers. Make sure your
bouquet will not stain your dress. If there is

a chance it will do so, have your florist take

whatever preventative steps are necessary.
On the day of your wedding, transport
your dress if necessary in the garment bag.
If snow is an issue, make sure all walkways
are shoveled before your arrival at the
venue. Put on your dress at the last possible
moment, after your hair and makeup are
done, in an area free of food and drink.
Use stain-free deodorant or antiperspirant
and walk with the skirt lifted up to keep it
from dragging the ground. After the ceremony, be careful not to lean or sit on anything, and before getting into the car, make
sure the seats are clean and dry.
Receptions can be tricky. In addition to
mingling with guests, you will be participating in loads of activities from dining to
dancing. Whatever you do, be careful,
especially when eating and drinking.
Should a stain occur, make certain you

stain sets.
Protecting your wedding dress continues after the reception is over. Change
immediately and arrange to have your
gown dry cleaned as soon as possible. If
you desire, you may want to have the gown
preserved.
Your wedding gown is an investment
that should be protected for a lifetime. Start
the day you pick it up from the dressmaker's
or bridal shop and don't let up until after
your gown has been cleaned, and with any
luck, you will preserve your wedding dress

don't want their weddings to be remembered for all the wrong reasons, so keep
feuding factions apart when assigning
seats.
Keep special needs guests in mind.
Some guests at the wedding may have special needs, and this must be kept in mind
when planning seating assignments. Guests
with medical conditions may benefit from
sitting close to the restroom, while those
with mobility issues might be best served sitting in a spot where waitstaff can more easily recognize when they need something.
Consider sitting older guests, whose vision
might not be as strong as it once was, as

close to the happy couple as possible so
these guests can see everything and won't
feel left out.
Make sure the seating assignment
table is easily accessible. The table on
which seating assignment cards will be
placed should be accessible upon entering
the reception hall. A table that's far off in
the corner may confuse some guests, who
might think the seating is a free-for-all and
simply sit in the first empty seats they see.
Consider flow between tables when
making assignments. While you might have

aced the seating assignments at each table,

don't overlook the importance of mapping
out tables as well. No couple wants their
guests to feel isolated from friends or family
members at other tables, so do your best to
ensure there's a good flow between the
tables. Plan for tables of family members to
be placed next to one another, and do the
same with groups of friends. This encourages guests to mingle and can make the
night much more enjoyable for everyone
involved. Planning seating assignments for a
wedding reception is no small task. But couples can employ several strategies to make
the process go as smoothly as possible.

...Wagner
Companies
From page 6
We have a lot of bending equipment,
lot of welding (and) polishing. Rather than
have that equipment go idle, we provide
services for local companies who we do
bending for their commercial products.
Usually when youre dealing with large
commercial companies who want specific
products done, part of their quality program is you need to have a quality program, Leto said. We became certified for
our industrial customer base. If youre ISO
certified, you follow procedures in terms of
maintaining your quality and you measure
what you do.While we did it for our industrial customers, it has certainly improved
our processes and procedures for taking
care of all of our customers.
In addition to railing products, Wagner
also created a product based on an
episode of the television show Seinfeld.
Were the worlds largest supplier and
manufacturer of Festivus Poles, (registered
trademark), Leto said.
Leto explained the company started to
develop that product in 2004 in response
to a New York Times article about how
people were celebrating Festivus seven
years after Seinfeld had ended. It was at
that time the company looked into selling
Festivus Poles.
Were not going to make a money, but
were going to have a lot of fun, Leto said,
recalling his conversation with Robert
Wagner. He agreed, and we got into the
Festivus Pole business, and weve sold thousands of them since 2005.
Leto noted that Gov. Jim Doyle had a
Festivus pole from the company, which is
now in the state Historical Society Museum
in Madison.
We still sell them, we have a lot of fun
in December, Leto said.
