Abstract: In this article the author considers Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist
organization, noting that it is an important factor in Israel's security and in Palestinian
politics. Despite these factors Hamas is shunned by the international community. The
author suggests that Israel ease its siege of the Gaza Strip in an effort to win
concessions from Hamas. According to the article Israel and the international community
could exploit weaknesses within Hamas to prevent the organization from undermining
peace negotiations in the region.

Abstract: In this article the author considers aspects of the U.S. policy on Afghanistan
and the conduct of the Afghan War. He notes that the U.S. population and U.S. president
Barack Obama have doubts about the efficacy of the policy with regard to Afghanistan.
The author states that realistic forecasts and projections suggest that the U.S. will remain
a presence in Afghanistan for a significant period of time. A number of issues are
addressed including U.S. goals in Afghanistan, the training of Afghan security forces, and
a resurgence of Taliban guerrilla fighters.

Abstract: In this essay the author discusses the state of the Russian security apparatus.
The resurgence of Russian security agencies under the administration of president and
prime minister Vladimir Putin is noted. The author states that officers in the upper
reaches of the security services, particularly the Federal Security Service (FSB), exercise
a significant amount of influence over Russia's internal politics, international relations and
economic policy. The author asserts that modernization of the country under president
Dmitry Medvedev must include a curb on the power of the security services.

Abstract: In this essay the author examines aspects of the cyber warfare mounted
against the United States and measures taken by the U.S. Department of Defense to
counter it. It is noted that more than 100 foreign intelligence agencies are engaged in
trying to pierce the digital computer networks of the U.S. military. In order to combat
these attacks the U.S. has engaged in a number of measures including making
partnerships with allied governments and private companies, creating sophisticated cyber
defenses, and has established Cyber Command, a branch of the U.S. armed forces.
