internship is very necessary for the students to get aware about the ups and downs

Brief History of ZTBL:

Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) erstwhile
Agricultural Development Bank of Pakistan (ADBP)
is the premier financial institution geared towards the
development of agriculture sector through provision
of financial services and technical Know How. The
restructuring of former ADBP is being carried out
with the aim to uplift the agriculture and rural sector
by

raising

farm

productivity,

streamlining

the

institutional credit and increasing income generating

capacity of the farming community. ZTBL was
incorporated as a Public Limited Company on 14th
December, 2002 through repeal of ADB Ordinance of
1961.
The new corporate structure redefines the bank's
status as a public limited company registered under
companies Ordinance'1984 with an independent
Board of Directors which aims at ensuring good
governance, autonomy, delivering high quality
ZTBL is a key R.F.I of Pakistan providing affordable, rural and agriculture
financial/non-financial services to the rural Pakistan, comprising 68 % of the total
population. The Bank through a country-wide network of 370 branches is serving

around half a million clients annually and over one million accumulated account
holders with the average loan size of around Rs.162331 serving 68%, 29% & 3 % of
subsistence, economic and large growers respectively.
The total assets of the Bank stand at Rs.123 billion with authorized capital of Rs.25
billion as of 31.12.2011, with a nation-wide working strength comprises 5789
employees. The share of ZTBL in total national institutional agricultural credit is 23%
as on 30.06.2012. ZTBL was incorporated as a Public Limited Company on 14th
December, 2002 through repeal of formal Agricultural Development Bank of Pakistan
Ordinance of 1961. Thereby transforming the bank as a corporate entity to serve as
a R. F.I
ZTBL Objectives

Develop and operate as a financially and operationally sustainable R.F.I of the

country.
Assist rural community, particularly the small farmers, in raising their
productivity and income levels through timely delivery of credit, advisory and

ancillary services.
Build ZTBL's image as a proactive, client friendly, financially & operationally

sustainable with indigenous product deployment.

Establish and provide backward and forward linkages to strengthen agri. value

added commodity chains.

Engage in public - private and wholesale - retail partnership to deepen

outreach and reduce operating cost.

To function as a rural commercial bank to mobilize rural capital formation and
to commercialize the agri. sector by delivering the true value of credit to the
client. Provide a wide range of risk insurance products to its clients.

Transformation of ZTBL to R.F.I of the country and road to excellence:

Healthy and well-functioning rural finance markets are directly related to achieving
the two key national policy objectives of accelerating rural/agriculture growth and
reducing poverty. The realization of these objectives depends on the simultaneity of
developments in rural finance and non-financial markets to foster the creation of
diverse sources of rural finance to build sustainable financial institutions, and
stimulate products and capital flows in the rural sector. For this, rural finance must be

ALI RAZA ARSHAAD (11014220-079)

13

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA)

seen as an integral part of equitable development within a framework of

macroeconomic stability. The ongoing corporatize restructuring lays the basis for
fundamental reforms for rural finance market development.
The recurring financial drain, pursuing the old rural finance paradigm and the
narrowing fiscal space have also promoted a shift in Government strategy that now
seeks viable intermediaries for enhancing outreach.
For the majority, access to affordable rural finance services is also important to
enable them to compete in the post-World Trade Organization scenario. Inability to
compete because of high financial costs could reduce income of the majority of
farmers and rural clients, particularly the small and subsistence clients. Lack of
access to affordable rural finance services will also prevent the clients from switching
to non-farm activities.
The ZTBL restructuring plan covering the following:

Governance: establish an environment that facilitates good governance and

accountability.
Systems: modernize operations through use of technology, networking and

communication tools.
Business processes: streamline products and delivery systems so as to

reduce transaction costs, simplify operations and increase outreach.

Products and services: introduce products and services that are financially

economically viable.
Human resource development: improve standards and skills of management

and staff and strengthen training capacity.

IT: establish new hardware and software platform to support MIS, accounting
system including forensic accounting and risk management functions.

The reforms shall establish ZTBL as a key R.F.I of the country, aiming to outreach
annual rural clientele to 600,000 by the end of year 2008. By expanding its private
sector role, the bank aims to establish network of high tech rural and agri.
financial services through intermediations under public private participation and
whole-sale -retail lending mechanism.

hosing facilities of such terms and subject to such conditions as may be prescribed
by its rule to agriculturists for the purpose of agriculture and to persons engaged in
cottage industries in rural areas and provide sustainable rural financing services,
particularly to small farmers. And also receive utility bills, Hajj applications and some
branches have the facility of western union and INSHA ALLAH this facility available in
2014 at every branch.
Business volume, reward honors & success stories:

The AAA/A-1+ (Triple A/A-One Plus) ratings assigned to Government Guaranteed

Obligations of Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) take into account the Federal
Government guarantee on credit lines obtained from the State Bank of Pakistan
(SBP) that form the pre-dominant source of the banks funding. Safety of deposits
mobilized by ZTBL is also guaranteed under the Banks (Nationalization) Act, 1974.
At end-Dec12, balance sheet footing of the bank was higher at Rs. 131.9b. Net
advances increased to Rs. 88.1b (FY11: Rs. 84.7b) though its proportion in total
assets declined to 66.8% (Dec11: 69.2) by end Dec12. While various new loan
products have been launched by the bank in FY12, Sada Bahar Scheme has
remained the flagship product of the bank, though its proportion has been declining
in the total portfolio. Awami Zarai Scheme, which relates to crop production loan, has
witnessed an increase over time. The management intends to increase the
proportion of this scheme in overall loan portfolio.
ALI RAZA ARSHAAD (11014220-079)

16

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA)

As part of its restructuring, the bank had initially submitted a proposal to SBP for
restructuring of the outstanding credit lines and subordinate debt to the tune of Rs.
54.5b; terms of the same could not be finalized. The management has been in
continuous negotiations with SBP in this regard. The management plans to submit a
plan whereby remission in net debt is proposed after adjustment of ZTBLs claim on
account of mark up differential due to previous cap on lending rate. The terms of
restructuring, if finalized, could have significant implications for the risk profile of the
institution. Meanwhile, the bank managed to increase its deposit base in FY12
though its proportion in overall funding base remained moderate. This along with
equity expansion through profit retention provided additional liquidity mainly
manifested in government securities and, to some extent, in TFCs having good credit
quality. Liquid assets as a proportion of borrowing and deposits improved on a
timeline basis, though still remaining on the lower side. In view of disagreement on
mark-up rate on SBPs credit lines, the total liability of the bank could be different
from that recorded on books.

PEST analysis:
Political:
Pakistan despite all international and public perceptions, today is a functioning
democracy and gradually there is a change in complexion and composition of
legislatures with more educated people and women (27% of National
Assembly and 17% of Senate) entering into politics. Similarly it helps in

ALI RAZA ARSHAAD (11014220-079)

20

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA)

designing best strategies to implement that could support the revival of bank
industry. Like in the era of nationalization bank had to suffer as other industry
that's why that impact is still found in the performance of this industry.
Economical:
Although banking sector development is important at the early stage of
economic growth, general liberalization presuming a homogeneous bank role
may not necessarily promote growth. The estimated cost structure indicates
that state-owned commercial banks are large enough, while development
financial institutions and private banks can expect to obtain cost-saving
advantages by expanding their operations. Since scope economies are
significant, portfolio diversification generally increases bank profits. In addition,
privatized banks are the most efficient, followed by foreign and private banks.
Public banks are the least efficient.
Social:
Banks always helped people in improvement of living condition of poor people
in various forms like giving loans to poor for starting business or directly
providing them the instruments that could enhance their living conditions.
Similarly ZTBL always tried to provide the needy people loans on soft terms
and

also

helped

to

eradicate

unemployment

by

providing

job

opportunities.Recent high growth trends coupled with enhanced spending on

social and 2007/2008 has together begun to pay some dividends.

Technology:
The Banking sector in Pakistan has experienced a rapid transformation. Just
about a decade back this sector was limited to the Sarkari (read nationalized)
and co-operative banks. Then came the multi-national banks, but these were
confined to serving an elite few. One could regard the past as the 'medieval
ages' in the banking industry, wherein every branch of the same bank acted as
an independent information silo and multi-channel banking (ATMs, Net
banking, Tele-banking, etc) was almost non-existent. Today banks have to
look much beyond just providing a multi-channel service platform for its

ALI RAZA ARSHAAD (11014220-079)

21

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA)

customers. There are other pressing issues that banks need to address in
order to chalk-out a roadmap for the future. Here are the top three concerns in
the mind of every bank's CEO. The customer is interested in how he/she can
benefit from the bank and its products. That's why it becomes necessary for a
bank to differentiate its products from the others. Some of the ways in which
differentiation can be introduced are through specialization, new products, and
increasing the value.

There is Inadequate Communication infrastructure.

Smaller and lowest computer facilities.

Inadequate IT training.

There must be an efficient IT department.

Contribution of organization toward economic development:

Economy of Pakistan mostly depends on agriculture. Zarai Taraqiati Bank Ltd. Play
very vital role in the economic development almost 67% population of Pakistan
belongs from agriculture occupation so ZTBL working for the development of the
agriculture sector and issue loans for the development of the agriculture sector. ZTBL
also help for the decreasing unemployment. At the present time 5789 employees
worked in this organization. ZTBL also contribute in the national revenue and also
help in the energy sector and give loans for the solar panels.

Comments on the organizational structure:

ALI RAZA ARSHAAD (11014220-079)

32

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA)

ZTBL have very strong organizational setup and structure, because ZTBL is a public
limited organization and all decisions are made by board of directors. And unity of
command is very simple and easily definable.
ZTBL have one central office in Islamabad and one Headquarter in each Provincial
capital city and also have 31 zonal offices and 370 branches all over the Pakistan.
So the Head office give the order to the headquarters and headquarters give the
order to the zonal offices and zonal offices give the order to the branches so this is
very clear unity of command. Disadvantage of this structure is the over supervision.

are

divided

between

departments do their jobs in occurrence with the bank policies. In ZTBL each
branch is divided into various departments depending on their size and volume of
business. Head of department manages each department & officials of the branch
follow procedures. The departments working within ZTBL Gujart branch are as
under:

Cash department:
Cash department has been designated as the central collection and control
point for cash. Cash department has the responsibility to collect, control, and
maintain records for all branch funds. In gujrat branch cash department has
the amount of cash in hand not exceed Rs. 3, 00, 000 and if the amount is
exceed than the cashier deposit cash In Muslim Commercial Bank Ltd. In the

individual employees in ZTBL Gujrat branch. Cashier is absolutely responsible
for that cash. But in ZTBL Gujrat branch each employee assumes the
responsibility for full and true reporting of all funds received.

ALI RAZA ARSHAAD (11014220-079)

40

Computer department:
Computer department is very important in making the banking sector
because it plays a very vital role in procedures faster and helping the bank
for providing better services to its customers. This department also made
data entry on all transactions and other bank routine functions. In this branch
computer department use some official softwares i.e. CDMS, CFOCS,
DIMIS, NIVS and ICRMS which are designed according to the key functions
of banks. The branch has LCO i.e. Lady Computer operator which is hired to
operate and maintain the computer of our branch. And also give the required
documents to the MCOs about the loan applicant i.e. NADRA verification
and also check the credibility of applicant. Scanning of loan applicant file

Credit department:
Credit department is very important for every bank because this is the main
source of earn profit. Credit department handles the credit granting, credit

the chances of corruption are very high because in which the cash is
involved and Risk of losses is also high so for this purpose ZTBL have
mobile credit officers and they doing field work. Different MCOs had different
areas and conduct proper investigation about loan applicants who are
related their areas. After this MCOs fill the KYC form and loan application

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA)

snatches with two copies of national identity card and after collecting all
information MCOs make credit investigation report. After fulfil the loan
application file, the file send to Credit administration department. MCOs also
have the responsibility for making the Credit utilization report in this report
MCOs conduct investigation that the loanee right use of credit. And also
recover the loan amount is a responsibility of MCOs.
For the purpose of reducing the corruption in the credit department in
September 20, 2006 The Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) has withdrawn
the loan sanctioning authority of mobile credit officers (MCOs) and redefined
the responsibilities of managers and other field functionaries to improve
credit delivery system and check corruption.
Before this decision the existing credit delivery system solely working under
the MCOs was not fit/ capable of expanding the business of the bank.
Branch managers and other functionaries of the bank and have also
eliminated the cash delivery outside the branches. Purpose of this decision
is to facilitate farmers and to meet their credit requirements, instead of

Deposit department:
In the entire Banking system the deposit plays its vital & significant role for
the sustainability of an entity. The deposits of a Bank are much greater than
its own capital and these deposits are subsequently invested or lent out by
the bank. The larger the difference between the rates at which these deposit
are borrowed, and the rate at which these are lent out/or invested the
greater will be the profit margin of the bank. Moreover, larger the deposits
the larger will the funds available for employment; and larger the funds lent
out/invested, the greater will be the return earned, and greater the amount of
return greater will be the profitability of bank. Due to this inter related
relationship of the whole operational activity of a bank; deposits are referred
as life blood of a Bank.
In order to ensure its sustainability & viability, the bank must have a
dependable deposit base therefore while accepting / taking deposits, a
Banker should be very careful and keep in mind the provisions of SBP
Prudential Regulations, stipulations of Know Your Customer (KYC), Anti

extra care is exercised in quality investment and profitable lending to ensure

information about my internship activities and ZTBL's branch where I did my
internship.

Summary of learning:
The skills and qualification I think I have gained from the internship:
It was a really nice opportunity for enhancing the skills and qualifications, every
student in any field of study should do internship in his or her relevant field in order to
get the practical experience. I think I have gained following skills from internship:

Enhance communication skills

How deal with customers
Practical knowledge
Know about the behaviour of other people
Organizational culture and organizations ethics values
Professional skills
Time management
Dealing with obstacles
How to satisfy your customer
Got knowledge about the banks official softwares
How manage the risk
Got experience about banking sector

How banking business is different from other businesses

How work as a team member
What are the motivation factors
How make the Decisions
Enhance my interpersonal skills by interacting with customers
How make the different policies
How manage the conditions when you working under the directions

The responsibilities I have undertaken during my internship period:

During my internship in ZTBL GUJRAT branch I have been given many types of
responsibilities which I have done very carefully. Many tasks were given me alone to
do. I worked hard to do them. Through my internship I came to know about the true
meanings of responsibility. From the responsibilities given to me I learned how to
work under the supervision of any person. Following are some responsibilities which
were given to me during internship:

Go to village and call for the repayment of loan.

Fill the loan case files
Check the loan case file and make sure that all the required documents are

complete and available.

Discover the loan case file with the help of loan case register.
Supervisor assigned me a task to find out the objection in which the rejected

loan case file.

Check the validity of some cheques
Collected utility bills and posted them
Fill different vouchers
Prepare daily cash transaction scroll
Fill account opening forms
Data entering in CDMS and ICRMS

How internship will influence on my future career plans:

Working for six weeks in ZTBL GUJRAT branch as an internee was very revealing
experience for me. During this time I learnt many new things which are surely going
to help me in my future professional career. It was a good experience for me to
observe and to be the part of practical working of a highly regarded organization like
ZTBL. During the internship I got a chance to understand general customer's
behaviour and his needs and wants related to banking services and products. It will
help me in future for getting a job as an experience. Through internship I came to

ALI RAZA ARSHAAD (11014220-079)

61

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA)

know that bookish knowledge is not enough for a bright future we should get
experience or learn the application of our classroom knowledge.
It will help me as customer of bank. Through my internship I got habit of working for
long hours which will definitely help me in future. Working as an internee I improved
my communication skills which will help me in society. I got a habit of casual dressing
from internship. I learnt how to behave as an employee in any organization which will
help me in that organization in which I will work in future. I got a lot of knowledge
from internship which will definitely help me in future. I got knowledge about the
working in any bank so it will help me choosing the job in bank is better or not. I
learnt the ethics from internship which will help me in future life.
How do you think the internship activities that you carried out are correlated
with your class room knowledge?
By working in any organization I came to know that the practical somehow different
from the classroom knowledge. In classroom we have been taught only the previous
searches and knowledge but in practically field, there is lot of competition. You would
have to run fast to achieve your goal. There was application of accounting rules of Dr
and Cr which was same like book, but other things I started to learn from zero. The
benefit of classroom study is that after getting training in any organization in any field
you will be able to apply the bookish knowledge. From the start we can't do
everything efficiently and effectively. From internship I came to know that only
bookish knowledge or classroom study is not enough for any job experience is most
necessary thing which can be getting only by practical. So there should be the
practical of classroom study in the institution. Classroom study is a base for a person
to making the decision because it has been merged in mind and become a part of
our mind. It helps us in any phenomena in which we are working.

ALI RAZA ARSHAAD (11014220-079)

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA)

Conclusions of the report:

A summary of key conclusions derived from the internship experience:
During my internship here in ZTBL, I found that ZTBL has high level of
professionalism and challenging environment and its culture is friendly. ZTBL seems
Top Agriculture Financing in the future as indicated by the financial indicators. It
keeps energy and potential to serve the deserving clients in all over the world. The
bank has set itself a vision to be a world-class bank. This can only be achieved with
dedication and a passion to excel in every activity. I really admire ZTBLs policy
makers for designing investor friendly and customer oriented products.
The bank is really working well and contributing a valuable part in the economy of
Pakistan through tax, giving loan to government, giving loans to the businesses for
their survival and expansion, generating a well skilled human resource and
employment etc. During this internship, I really learned Professionalism, leadership
skills, communication skills, problem solving skills, situation analysis skills and how to
become a good mentor etc.
ZTBL is a specialized institute which provides financing facilities to the people of rural
areas and in this way it is contributing its part for the development of the country. Due
to a government owned organization the politicians and other higher authorities
sometime use it to give benefits to their families and friends and this also effects the
growth of the bank. However the bank has improved itself a lot, the profit of the year
of 2008-12 and decline in Non Performing Loans are clear signs of improvements.

ALI RAZA ARSHAAD (11014220-079)

63

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA)

The few things on which the bank has to focus is implementation of information
technology with faster pace, improving branch infrastructure and working of its
human capital to make them motivated.
General observations:
I observe about ZTBL as an internee:

ZTBL directly finance to the agriculture sector this is good for the economy of

Pakistan
ZTBL need to advancement in new technology and need to upgrade branches
High political interference
Mostly seasonal work in the ZTBL need to convert into the daily bases work
Favouritism and nepotism and also corrupt system
Now ZTBL maintain computerised record of their customers
Marketing is very necessary for the ZTBL because ZTBL start collection of

utility bills and also western union facilities

ZTBL have branches all over the country need to open more branches
ZTBL staff very cooperative with their customers
Mostly customers are satisfy with the polices and rules

SWOT analysis of ZTBL:

In SWOT analysis identify the organization internal
strength

and

weakness

and

also

identify

the

organization external opportunities and threats. All

organization always uses their strengths and avail
opportunities avoid threats and reduce the weakness.
So for this purpose ZTBL have research and
development department. When you know about your
strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats you
easily make plan about the future.
The unique strengths are internal abilities of an organization that can be used to
have a competitive advantage for the organization. Weaknesses inherent in
organization are those that need improvement for better functioning of an
organization. Opportunities are those which are available to organization currently as
well as in the foreseeable future. Threats are those that organization faces from its
competitors, regulatory bodies, and technological change or customer preferences.

ALI RAZA ARSHAAD (11014220-079)
