1) Are you Pro or Con for Facebook?

Do you have Facebook? This question can be easily heard from nowadays teenagers
to adults, especially for those who live in big cities. When Mark Zuckerberg created
Facebook in 2004, he had no idea how big it would actually become, and how big a debate
the pros and cons of Facebook would spark. It seems that everybody is required to have a
Facebook account if they want to exist in a real life. Is that so?
In simple terms, Facebook is a social networking website where each user joins the
community and connects with their friends virtually. Connected members can share
information, pictures, videos, and also use the Facebook instant messenger facility. A member
creates a profile and uploads anything he/ she wants, and all his connected friends can view
this data at any time. As a consequence, people who like Facebook can spend hours on it
browsing through other peoples profiles.
To balance out the advantages, there bound to be some cons of Facebook as well.
Facebook users will get bombarded with unwanted friend requests from many unknown
people. Your friends and family members will be able to snoop around and know that what is
happening in your life at all times. While Facebook appears entertaining and fun, there is a lot
of danger in regards to personal data being retrieved, compromised, and exploited. Not to
mention that you will witness unnecessary dramatization of unimportant occurrences in your
friends lives.
Horeover, you will waste many hours because facebook is addictive for most people.
However, you also can use Facebook for business purpose as many people like to advertise
their work on this medium in the hope that a potential client or employer may see it. Many
advertisers and companies also use Facebook as an advertising medium since there is a large
base of people to target here.
These pros and cons Facebook for kids and adults mean that Facebook is double
edged sword, and you have to make a decision about joining Facebook. Even if you are a
member, there is no compulsion to share information every single day, and you can also
choose to share only selected information. All this means that Facebook is synonymous with
the internet in the sense that it can be useful or disruptive, only if you allow it to be.

2) Should We Pay Taxes?

In 2010, a scandal in Indonesias tax department involving a low paid tax officer who
had more than $3 milion in his bank account, has exposed how officials set up a massive
syndicate to defraud the government and steal funds that were rightly owned to the Central
Government. As a consequence of the scandal, many people are questioning citizens
obligation of paying taxes.
Those who refuse to pay taxes considered the fact that tens of millions of people are
still living below the property line, thousands of babies suffer from chroming malnutrition,
people have to deal with terrible transportation infrastructures, and many student study in
poorly built shabby classrooms. Where does the money from taxes go? Why should tax
payers render their hand earned money to the government under the guise of tax, if there is a
possibility that the funds will be embezzled by the very same officials collecting these taxes?
The tax case involving Gayus has led to a public outcry, with thousand of irritated
Indonesians signing up for a Facebook campaign calling for a boycott of tax payment. The
group of The Campaign of 1,000,000 Facebookers Boycotting Tax for Justice was made by
Alexander A. Spinoza as a form of protest. This group speaks for all Indonesians who are sick
and tired of their tax money being squndered by government officials. This cyber movement
is expected to incite the people to protest against the state in a way that leads to a peoples
movement.
However, the obligation of paying tax is unavoidable since a country needs money to
finance development. The tax case has nothing to do with the deparment, and therefore,
public boycott over tax payment should be ended. Citizens should keep on paying taxes to
pay for the infrastructure, social welfare and, most importantly, the government officials to do
their job properly.
Indeed, the community is disillusioned at recent corruption among tax officials.
Nevertheless, taxpayers still have to abide by the law and continue to pay taxes. In the mean
time, it is also necessary for the government to continue its tax reforms in order to restore
taxpayers confidence in it. Moreover, strict punishment must be imposed to improve peoples
image of tax officials.
