Changes to materials return policy at KDL

In an effort to reduce costs while
preserving access to popular library
services such as inter-library loan, the
Lakeland Library Cooperative along with
its 41 member libraries will be making a
change to the current materials return
policy. Effective March 15, 2010, library
customers will need to return items to
the library in which they were checked-
out, as opposed to returning the item to
any Lakeland Cooperative Library as was
previously allowed (with the exception
of interloaned items). Card holders of
multi-branch libraries, such as the Kent
District Library, may still return materi-
als to any branch within that system.
These changes come as a result of a
40% reduction in State Aid to public li-
braries in fiscal year 2009-10. The result
has reduced funding by approximately
$500,000 to the Lakeland Library Co-
operative and its member libraries. The
change in the materials return policy is
being made to contain the growing costs
of staffing, transportation and fuel need-
ed for the delivery system.
This change in policy will not impact
the current inter-library loan system. Li-
brary customers can still place holds on
items through the online catalog and re-
quest for them to be sent to their home
library. These items can then be returned
to any Lakeland library location, with the
exception of Grand Rapids Public Library.
“We feel very fortunate to have been able
to provide our customers with this con-
venience for so many years, but in light
of continued budget cuts we are forced to
reevaluate the current system. In order
to maintain popular services such as in-
terlibrary loan, we have to take measures
to contain costs,” explains Martha Esch,
Director of the Kent District Library.
The Lakeland Library Cooperative
includes 41 public libraries throughout
Kent, Ottawa, Allegan, Barry, Muskegon,
Newaygo, Ionia, and Montcalm coun-
ties.

GAME ON Summerfest
planning
meetings begin
For the second consecutive year, the Lakeview
Area Chamber of Commerce is partnering with McK-
enna’s Village Restaurant to host a series of planning
meetings ahead of the annual Lakeview Summerfest
celebration. Summerfest, scheduled for June 17 to
19, is a highlight of the community, and culminates
with the Jaycee’s impressive fireworks display over
Tamarack Lake. The first planning meeting is slated
for 6pm on Thursday, February 11 at the Village res-
taurant.
The planning meetings are intended to bring to-
gether all those responsible for ensuring the success
of the events. Organizers are asking that any group
that is coordinating an event during the three-day
celebration send at least one representative to the
initial meeting.
“We do a lot of brainstorming at these meetings,
and work hard to make sure that the event works for
everyone,” said chamber board member Tom Am-
mann. “We are always looking for new events to add
to Summerfest, so we really encourage that anyone
even thinking about a new event comes to the plan-
ning meetings.”

Kick-Off Event held on Saturday,
January 16th at the Van Andel Arena.
They participated in fun activities,
played games, and enjoyed cookies
to taste. The girls were introduced to
“Flounder” from Thunder Country
94.5fm. Afterwards they attended
the Grand Rapids Griffins Hockey
Game where the Griffins faced-off
against the Hamilton Bulldogs. The
Griffins earned an impressive and
much needed 3 to 1 victory over the
Western Conference leading Bull-
dogs. A portion of the hockey ticket
proceeds from this event will support
Girl Scout leadership programs in
the Michigan Shore to Shore Coun-
cil. The girls enjoyed the afternoon
outing.

Kenneth L. Duley, 68 of Newaygo
died Tuesday, February 2, 2010 from
dementia. Ken was born September
17, 1941 in Grand Rapids, MI the son
of John and Pearl (Skinner) Duley.
Surviving is his wife of 45 years, Carol
(Davis) Duley; 3 daughters, Betty Du-
ley, Cindy Rowland, Jeanne Duley;
2 grandchildren, Matthew and Kari
Rowland; 1 brother, William Duley;
5 sisters, Virgie Ward, Thelma Hof-
fert, Dolly Bancino, Sharon Hamb-
lin, Helen Hamblin; many nieces and
nephews. He will be sadly missed by
family and friends. Cremation has tak-
en place and there will be no services.

winter festival

This is in regards to several phone
calls and talking to concerned citizens
of the community about the “Winter
Festival”. They are concerned about
the behavior of some of the business-

Army Sgt. Nathan A. Scott was part
of a support team made up of soldiers
from throughout the Army for the 2010
U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The Army
sponsored the nationally-televised foot-
ball game played on Jan. 9 at the Alamo-
dome in San Antonio, Texas.
This was the Army’s 10th year as spon-
sor of the high school all-star game that
pits the best players in the nation against
each other in an East versus West contest.
The soldiers’ support ranged from coor-
dinating events with players and soldier-
heroes to providing media coordination,
hotel accommodations and organizing
and orchestrating pre-game activities. In
this year’s match-up, the West team man-
aged to outscore the East team, 30-14.

Just what does that mean? It means get well the way nature intended.
Let’s use the example of fever. A fever is a natural part of our body’s defense system. Most
bacteria and viruses that invade our systems can not live at a temperature over 100.5. So when
you become ill, your inner healing mechanism sets up a fever to help kill off the invaders. Because
a few children have had problems and seizures with high, high fevers we have taught every one
to treat the fever immediately with Tylenol or Motrin. While those things may help us feel better,
using them will extend the illness because it suppresses the natural healing mechanism.
Another example is a cold with a runny nose. Yes, I agree that runny nose is miserable. But nature
intended it to run so the invading organisms can be shed out of our body. So, we are trained by TV
commercials to take decongestants, anti-histamines, and steroid nasal sprays to stop the drainage.
We may feel somewhat better, but we are prolonging the illness.
Another example is a cough. The purpose of a cough is to remove bad
bugs from our bronchial tubes. So often we want to suppress the cough.
Again, we may feel a little better, but in the long run, the illness is extended
or more damage is done to the bronchial lining, setting up chronic, more
severe lung problems. The better approach is to figure out what nature is
trying to do and then support that. If you have a cough, drink lots of water,
eat garlic and onions to liquefy the mucous to get it out of there better.
If you have an illness with a fever, take some good hot baths. This will kill
more of the bad bugs, accelerating your cure. Homeopathic remedies are
often helpful because they are designed to stimulate the natural healing
mechanisms without suppression.
