"What do we look for in candidates?" says Diana Tarantino, Sales & Recruitment
Manager for Brunels mining division in Canada. "Good question and not that easy
to answer. Our focus is quality and loyalty. We are match makers, looking to find the
best suitable match for our clients requirements. We not only seek candidates that
are best suited in regards to their technical expertise but we also pay close attention
to our clients corporate culture to ensure we are identifying the right fit."
Diana has been working with Brunel for seven years. "As Brunels Sales &
Recruitment Manager for our mining division, I have the opportunity to deal with
clients and candidates from some of the largest and most reputable mining
companies in the world while managing an exceptional team of dedicated and driven
Recruitment and BD Consultants. I consider myself very lucky to have the
opportunity to come to work every day to a job that I love allowing for my
entrepreneurial spirit to be practiced."
From your experience, what are clients looking for?
"Our clients want loyal employees. For contracting opportunities, our clients are
looking for that contractor that will stick around for the full duration of their contract.
If they have completed their contracts with previous employers, this is a good sign.
For permanent roles, the preference is to have candidates that have shown loyalty
to previous employers by staying with one company for a number of years rather
than jumping around every few years. We are focused on meeting this client
expectation."

We are often required to conduct skype interviews or telephone interviews when a

face to face interview is not possible. In addition, there are times in which we will
use our videoconference to conduct interviews. For example, our office in Toronto
will invite candidates that reside in Montreal to our local office to use our
videoconference to connect for an interview. Being able to see the interviewee on
skype or videoconference allows for us to pick up on non-verbal cues that permit for
us to identify how enthusiastic and serious the candidate is about the opportunity."

So there are several ways of interviewing. Could you explain from your experience
how a candidate could prepare him/herself when an interview takes place via
telephone or video conference?
"My 5 tips to keep in mind for a telephone interview:"

1. Print your resume and any reference letters you may have.

previous employers). By having your resume readily available, you can avoid any
awkward moments where you are struggling to respond to certain questions.

1. Find the right location to have a private conversation.

Ideally, it would be best to be at home in a room away from any disruptions and
distractions (example: away from a dog or baby).

Review the job description before the interview.

Have it in front of you during the discussion. Prior to the interview, highlight

1. Dress to impress.

Although the interviewer wont see you in some cases, it is important that you feel
that the interview is a professional one and not a casual interview. You will feel more
confident and communicate more professionally if you are wearing a suit versus
wearing your pajamas.

1. Avoid over-talking.

When you are on the phone, it is impossible to read the nonverbal cues that
interviewers send in person, like averting their gaze or adjusting their posture as

What are things recruiters dont want to hear?

"Recruiters dont want to hear that you left previous employers for more money, that
you got into an argument with your boss and we do not want to deal with a
candidate with inflated salary expectations that are unrealistic. Having unrealistic
salary expectations demonstrates a lack of knowledge of the industry and may turn
off a recruiter allowing them to perceive you as a high maintenance type of
candidate."
How can candidates avoid these kind of subjects?
If you left for more money, there must have been other reasons as well. It would be
best to focus on the other reasons. Example: If the project you worked on was
lacking funding and you were concerned about the stability of the organization and
you decided to leave for more money, it would be best to focus on the other
reasons.
If you are unsure about what is on the market in regards to salary, do your
homework before the interview. I would suggest speaking to industry professionals
to gage what is one the market.
If you got into a fight with your boss, I would suggest avoiding the words "fight" and
"argument" since these words have a negative connotation. It is best to replace

Confidence is not something you either have or you don't.

Take me. Stick me on a bicycle at a local group ride and I'm confident. I'm
self-assured. I feel like I belong (which, if you think about it, is a nice definition of
confidence.)
But stick me on a bicycle at a gran fondo surrounded by the fast guys and suddenly
everything changes. I'm instantly shy and insecure. I feel like a very small fish way
out of his water.
Unfortunately for me -- and maybe for you -- confidence is much more situational
than absolute. In some setting we're self-assured; in others, not so much.
That's probably natural... and that's probably why many tips for how to feel confident
often fall short. Much of that advice can be boiled down to, "You can be confident -all you have to do is decide to be confident."
Evidently it's easy: suppress negative thoughts and repeat some really cool
self-affirming statements and voila! I'm like Donald Trump.
Or not.

According to Dr. Tomas Chamorro Premuzic, a professor of business psychology at

University College London and author of the outstanding book Confidence:
Overcoming Low Self-Esteem, Insecurity, and Doubt, there is another way to look at
supposedly confidence-building self-talk:
For example, if you are feeling worthless and try to suppress those feelings, you will
never be able to do what it takes to improve. If, on the other hand, you come to
terms with your negative self-views and accept the fact that you are not as good as
you would like to be and, especially, that you are unhappy with yourself, you will be
able to focus on what you need to do to improve.
Dissatisfaction is the mother of change, and only change can drive improvement.

The choice between the two options is a no-brainer. Deliberate attempts to increase
your confidence are bound to result in failure and demoralize you, whereas attempts
to improve your performance can result in not just competence gains but also a
genuine boost to your confidence. The answer to the question, "What should I do
about my low confidence?" can hardly be simpler:
Embrace it.
Think about it. Lack of confidence isn't the problem; lack of confidence is actually
the means to a solution. When you actually accept your weak points, your flaws, and
your imperfections, then you can motivate yourself to make changes and improve.

So what is the only recipe for feeling more confident?

Success.
Improvement breeds confidence. Competence breeds confidence. Success -- in
your field, or sometimes in any pursuit -- breeds confidence.
Take me again. Years ago I was invited to speak to an audience of around a
thousand people. Awesome, right? Well, maybe not. I had never spoken to an
audience larger than about 150 people before. Plus I was asked to speak on a topic
I didn't know that much about.
Even so, the opportunity was too good to pass up...
... and I bombed.
Badly.
Oh, everyone told me I did fine. (To a speaker, being told you were "fine" is like a
teenager being told you have a good personality.) I wanted to believe them. I wanted
to ignore my feelings of incompetence, disappointment, and failure.

to speak on topics outside my wheelhouse so I could learn the mechanics of crafting

a great hook and a great story. Sometimes I did well, sometimes I did badly -- but
over time I gained skill and competence.
And confidence.
Am I still nervous before I step out in front of big crowds? Oh hell yeah. I'm a hot
mess of insecurity. But I can work through those feelings -- not because I engage in
a lot of happy horse (manure) self-talk but because I know I've been there, done
that, and can do it again.
I'm confident, because I have success in my pocket.
Yet I'm also insecure enough to always want to get better.
Even Unrelated Success Helps
Oddly enough, success in one pursuit yields greater confidence in other areas of
life.
Back to my bicycle example: The first major gran fondo I rode was 100 miles long
and included over 11,000 feet of climbing over four mountains (two of those climbs
on dirt/gravel roads.) It was long. It was endless. It was physically (and willpower-y)
harder than anything I had ever done. But I finished it.

That's because while confidence may be situational, some degree of confidence can
also spill over. When you feel good about yourself in one way -- when you achieve
some degree of success in one aspect of your life -- you tend to feel better about
other parts of your life as well. After all, if you can do one thing well, you can do lots
of things well.
All you have to do is work at it.
How to Be More Competent -- and Therefore More Confident
So forget the self-talk and psychoanalysis. It's all about action. Here's Tomas again:
Most people like the idea of being exceptional, but not enough to do what it takes to
get there... everybody says they want to be slim, healthy, attractive, and rich, but few
people are willing to do what it takes to attain those things, which suggests they
don't really want those things as much as they say or think.
Paul Arden, former creative director of Saatchi & Saatchi, sums this up nicely by
explaining that typically when we say we "want" something, we actually just mean
we want to have it, but with no implicit assumption that we're willing to do any work
to get there. In reality, wanting something should equate with being prepared to take
the necessary steps to achieve it. If you are serious about your goals, then you will
do whatever it takes to attain them; your confidence is secondary.

So don t say you lack confidence. All of us lack confidence. All of us have
insecurities, doubts, fears... all of us.

Just pick a goal, a goal you truly want to achieve, and take a clear-eyed look at your
weaknesses -- not so you'll feel less confident, but so you can determine exactly
what you need to work on.
Then get to work. Celebrate small successes. Analyze your weaknesses. Keep
going.
As you gain skill you'll also gain a feeling of genuine confidence, one that can never
be taken away -- because you've earned it.

I feel inadequate. And there's not much I can do about it. Or even want to do about
it. I actually like the feeling.
I had a lunch today with a guy who worked in the mailroom at Hannah-Barbera
which made all my cartoon favorites from the 70s: The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo,
The Jetsons, and so on.
He used to pitch ideas every day to Joe Barbera. "I was working in the mailroom but
I kept coming up with ideas for cartoons. I would send them up to Joe Barbera and I
had no idea if he would like them or not. Then eventually he pulled me over and I
started helping on all the scripts."
I mentioned some of my favorite cartoons from the 70s. "You know that one with
Scooby Doo and the Harlem Globetrotters?" I said. "I wrote all of those," he said.
"What about Space Ghost?"

"What about the Jetsons?" "Wrote it."

And so on. Impressive guy. He killed himself at one thing for 30 years and wrote all
these classics I grew up on.
I've met or interviewed so many people in the last year. In the last five years. In the
last 25 years. People who have amazed me. I try to learn from them and sometimes
I can learn a little bit.
When I meet someone I try to learn one thing that I will never forget. It adds up.
Like how someone got inspired by a pencil to build a hundred schools in third world
countries (Adam Braun) or about someone who wrote lyrics every day while 97% of
his friends were killed by the time his childhood was over and then he made the
bestselling song of 1995 (Coolio).
Or the Congressman obsessed with meditation Or the other congressman who is
now running for President. Or the 72 year old who runs the largest beer company in
the country.
Or people who work 90 hours a week chasing their dreams.
I admit: I'm not really that driven. I like to read. I like to write. I like to tell my story.
You know what my basic story is? Fear.

What a roller coaster! I wasn't making dreams. I just wanted to feed my family.
I think I came up with a strategy to keep me balanced. To allow me to grow and
flourish instead of just worry. But really, past that, I don't care.
I'm happy I feed my family now after such a roller coaster. I don't want to own a
basketball team. Or end aging. Or go to the moon.
At some point I gave myself permission:
It's ok if you don't know what you want to do next.
It's ok if you're scared. Scared shitless.
It's ok to not write a bestselling novel.
It's ok to leave early.
It's ok to not be a billionaire.
It's ok to not start a charity that ends malaria.
It's ok to get fired or to fail. Or even worse, to lose someone's money. That
happens sometimes.
I try hard at everything I love. When I love something I want to obsess on every
part of it. This has caused me problems in relationships when I obsess.
It's ok to be in hard situations that you can't solve.

that.
That's ok that I have to remind myself of that or lose everything. Again.
It's ok if not everyone likes me. Sometimes it surprises me who doesn't like me. I
think I get surprised like that at least once a day. I got surprised like that yesterday.
It's ok to be "stuck" sometimes. To know that you have talents but to have no idea
how or when or why to apply them. Being stuck is a huge signal it's to time to
change. That's not a bad thing. It's a good thing.
It's ok to take time ordering.
It's ok to not have opinions.
Whenever you argue, people are always ready with pointy sharp facts. If one person
has the facts for X, then another has the facts for -X.
There's lots of intelligence tests out there. Like: Google asks these questions at
interviews. How marbles would fit in all of outerspace? I look at those questions. I
can't answer any of them. That's ok too.
Sometimes I forget to return an email. I really liked a person and they sent an
email and then I forget to reply. I look back months later and see I made a draft but
never hit send. Sometimes that's ok. But sometimes it prevents me from being
friends with people I like.

Pretty soon she will beat me. I guess that's ok also. Children should get better than
their parents.
A friend of mine is a super-genius. He stopped by yesterday to show me his latest
invention. He came up with a new molecule to put into a "vaping" device (an
electronic device that lets you smoke without the actual smoke.)
He made a special concoction so instead of smoking nicotine he's the first person to
ever smoke vitamins. We loaded it up with vitamin B12 and each took about 10,000
times the recommended daily allowance.
He took his blood before and after. Sure enough, 10,000 times more b12 was in his
blood than before.
He said, "this goes right into the bloodstream. As opposed to taking it in pill form
where none of it goes into the bloodstream. That whole $28 billion vitamin industry is
a scam."
We vaped Vitamin B12 for about an hour and then I went to my cartoonist lunch and
then over to do a podcast with Stephen Dubner who wrote Freakonomics.
I was thinking to myself, "I'm the second person in history to smoke Vitamin B12. I'm
like the Buzz Aldrin of that vitamin.
Claudia incidentally, was number three. We're vita-nauts.

I said dying to me sounded like the happiest truth about living. That being born was
a pretty sad truth.
Once your born you have to excrete food for the rest of your life. That's like God's
punishment for eating that apple. Once we were eating apples we had to shit them
out.
I said I wouldn't mind if I died tomorrow. I'm not depressed or anything. But life has
been pretty good to me so I don't really sweat dying.
It's ok if I want to die occasionally without being depressed. Who cares? We all have
to die sometime.
Dubner and I did six straight podcasts in a row. We're probably going to release the
podcasts in a month or so. I had a lot of fun. Not because of the podcasts but
because we've been friends for 15 years almost. I'm vaguely ahead in a
backgammon match that we started in 2003.
What are you up to next? he said when we were leaving the studio
I said, I don't know. Probably go home and go to sleep. I'm pretty tired. It's ok if I go
to sleep at 7pm if I'm tired.
And that's exactly what I did.
