PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

On October 14, 1840 The Times of London carried the following notice:
"There is at present, in the possession of Mrs. Parker of Golden Square, a copy of
Macklin's Bible in forty-five large volumes, illustrated with nearly 7000
engravings from the age of Michael Angelo to that of Reynolds and West. The
work also contains about 200 original drawings or vignettes by Loutherbourg.
The prints and etchings include the works of Raffaelle, Marc Antonio, Albert
Durer, Callot, Rembrandt, and other masters, consisting of representations of
nearly every fact, circumstance, and object mentioned in the Holy Scriptures.
There are, moreover, designs of trees, plants, flowers, quadrupeds, birds, fishes,
and insects; such as, besides fossils, have been adduced in proof of the universal
Deluge. The most authentic Scripture atlasses are bound up with the volumes.
The Bible was the property of the late Mr. Bowyer the publisher, who collected
and arranged the engravings, etchings, and drawings at great expense and
labour; and he is said to have been engaged for upwards of thirty years in
rendering it perfect. It was insured at the Albion Insurance Office for 3000."
The Bowyer Bible is now in the Bolton Museum, Lancashire, England.
Robert Bowyer (1758-1834) was a miniature-painter and print-publisher,
proprietor of the Historic Gallery illustrating Hume's History (founded 1792,
collapsed 1807). He also produced the grangerised edition of the Macklin Bible
referred to as The Bowyer Bible (1791-5). Thomas Macklin (c.1760 - 1800) was a
printseller and publisher. He began his series of British Poets in 1787, and the
Macklin Bible in 1790. According to the Dictionary of National Biography,
"[t]he Macklin Bible endures as the most ambitious edition produced in Britain,
often pirated but never rivalled."

THE ANNUNCIATION
ALBRECHT DRER (14711528)

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

On the left the archangel Gabriel approaches the praying Virgin Mary in her
bedchamber. Over her head is a dove representing the Holy Spirit, and in the sky
above a figure of God the Father. A woodcut made by Albrecht Drer. German.
1510. This print (without text) is from a series of 37 woodcuts by Drer (The
Small Passion). It is signed on the block. Dimensions: height: 125 millimetres;
width: 96 millimetres. The original woodblock is in the British Museum, London.
Albrecht Drer (14711528) was born in Nuremberg, the son of a successful
Hungarian goldsmith. His godfather was Anton Koberger, the leading German
publisher of his day, whose best-selling Nuremberg Chronicle of 1494 contained
illustrations designed by the painter Michel Wolgemut, with whom Drer served
three years of apprenticeship from 1486-9. During the second half of the 1490s he
visited northern Italy, where the works of artists such as Andrea Mantegna and
Giovanni Bellini had a powerful effect on his artistic development.
In 1495, Drer opened his own workshop in Nuremberg, a wealthy centre of
trade which was situated at a focal point within the Holy Roman Empire. He
took the radical step of producing high quality prints for an open market, and
the first edition of his famous Apocalypse series of woodcuts was published in
1498. Drer's paintings also display a deep interest in new subjects and
Renaissance ideas, particularly his self-portraits of the late 1490s. From 1505 to
1507 he visited Italy again and from 1507 to 1512 he worked on numerous
paintings and The Engraved Passion. The woodcut series of The Life of the
Virgin, The Great Passion and The Little Passion were published in 1511.
Drer's re-vitalisation of printmaking techniques caught the attention of the
circle of humanist scholars in Nuremberg, who informed him on the literature
and ideals of the Italian Renaissance and advised on subjects that would appeal
to the educated lite. His achievements as a printmaker played a key role in the
choice of the woodcut medium by the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I for his
colossal commemorative projects. From 1520-1521 he travelled in the
Netherlands. In later years, he worked on the publication of his ideas on art
theory in the Treatise on Measurement (1525), Treatise on
Fortification(1527), and Four books on Human Proportion (1528).

DETAIL OF DRAWING FOR THE HEAD-PIECE VIGNETTE TO
THE EPISTLE TO THE HEBREWS IN THE MACKLIN BIBLE
PHILIPPE JACQUES DE LOUTHERBOURG (1740-1812)
The vignette shows the Christ-child in rays of light emanating from clouds
carrying a branch and with a halo of stars, winged cherub heads surrounding. In
the print derived from the drawing by De Loutherbourg the engraving is
accompanied by letterpress in two columns below and on verso and is lettered
below the image with production details: "P J de Loutherbourg Invt et del", "J
Heath dirt." and publication line: "Published by T Macklin, July 1 1800". Print
made by James Heath. Dimensions: height: 490 mms; width: 390 mms.
The Macklin Bible had 72 prints, 22 of which were by Philippe Jacques De
Loutherbourg (1740-1812). His interest in the occult and study of Hebrew
influenced some of these pictures and the approximately seventy-one vignettes
that he produced over the next ten years. During this time, Loutherbourg became
a scholarly recluse, extending his knowledge of the Kabbalah and studying his
library of rare religious books. Bowyer had De Loutherbourgs original drawings
pasted into his grangerised copy of Macklins Bible. (For a complete inventory of
De Loutherbourgs contribution to the Bowyer Bible see Appendix 1.)
James Heath (17571834) was an engraver, founder of family dynasty, and father
of Charles. Bibliography: John Heath, The Heath Family Engravers 1993.

THE ANGEL APPEARING TO THE SHEPHERDS
REMBRANDT HARMENSZ VAN RIJN (1606 - 1669)

16

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

An etching by Rembrandt with dry-point, burin and sulphur tint, here in its
finished state. Three states are extant. Dated (from II) 1634. Berlin has III,
Amsterdam III, London I and III. Dimension: height 262 mms; width 218 mms.
Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (1606 - 1669) was a painter of portraits,
landscapes and historical and biblical subjects, and an etcher. He was born in
Leiden the son of a mill-owner; in 1620 after completing his tuition at the Leiden
Latin School he enrolled at Leiden University; then he began a three-year
apprenticeship in Leiden to a minor painter Jacob Isaacz Swanenburgh. From
1624 to 1625 he was a pupil of Pieter Lastman, a leading painter in Amsterdam,
for about six months, after which he set himself up as an independent painter in
Leiden and worked closely with Jan Lievens. In or around 1631 he settled
permanently in Amsterdam. During 1633-9 he produced a series of six paintings
depicting Christ's Passion for the head of state, Prince Frederik Hendrik of
Orange (now in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich). He married Saskia van
Uylenburgh in 1634; in 1649 Hendrickje Stoffels entered his household as a
servant and they had a child, Cornelia, together. In 1656-8 his assets, art
collection, and home were sold to pay off his creditors. He died in 1659.
There are only a few print cycles in Rembrandts uvre. However, in 1654, he
made two etched series of Biblical scenes: a Passion, and a series of five or six
sheets from the Childhood of Jesus. There is only a loose connection between
individual scenes within each of the series, and each print can stand as a work in
its own right.

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

In a barn the shepherds gather around the manger and the Virgin lifts up the
sheet to give them a clearer view; a large classical column at right suggests a
location in a humble outhouse to the main building. An engraving after
Abraham Bloemaert. The print was made by Jacob Matham and published by
Jacques Razet. 1597 (circa). School: Netherlandish. Inscription Content: Lettered
below in the design "Abrahamus Blommaert Inuentor,/Matham sculp" and with
the signature of Jacques Razet. Dimensions: height: 228 mms; width: 292 mms.
There is a related drawing incised for transfer in the Abrams collection (see W.
Robinson, Bruegel to Rembrandt: Dutch and Flemish drawings from the Maida
and George Abrams collection, exhibition catalogue 2002-3, no. 26).
Abraham Bloemaert (15641651) was a genre, portrait and history painter, and
an etcher and engraver. Born at Dordrecht, he died in Utrecht. He was the son of
Cornelis Bloemaert and a pupil of Joost de Beer in Utrecht. In 158083 he was a
pupil of H. Francken in Paris. In 159192 he was in Amsterdam. He was also
known as Abraham Bloemaart. Bibliography: Marcel Roethlisberger and Marten
Jan Bok, Abraham Bloemaert and his Sons, 2 vols, 1993 (catalogue of the
paintings and prints). Jacob Matham (1571-1631) was an engraver and publisher
based in Haarlem. He was a pupil and the stepson of Goltzius (see Rest on the
Flight into Egypt below), who had married Mathams mother in 1579. He was in
Italy 15937. He took over the Goltzius shop in Haarlem around 1600 and in 1601
he received his own privilege from Prague. Jacques Razet (1589-1609) was an
Amsterdam art collector who published around thirty prints, active 1589-1609.

THE PRESENTATION
JOHN OPIE (17611807)

22

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

Simeon stands holding the infant Jesus, looking up and thanking God in the
Nunc Dimittis. Joseph kneels in front of him, beside a basket with two turtle
doves. The Virgin stands to the right with St. Anne just behind her (Luke 2:22,
28). A print made by William Bromley after John Opie. School: British. This is
one of the plates in the Macklin Bible. It was also published separately in London
in 1795. In the latter lettering below the image tells us that J. Opie R.A.
pinxt./W. Bromley sculpt./London, Publish'd March 25. 1795, by Thos. Macklin,
Poets Gallery, Fleet Street.. An etching and engraving. Dimensions: height: 307
millimetres (image); width: 257 millimetres (image).
John Opie (17611807) was a British painter (mainly portraits) and draughtsman
and a member Royal Academy. Opie produced paintings for seven of the plates
in Macklins Bible (see below). William Bromley (17691842) was a painter, line
engraver, etcher, occasional mezzotinter, and publisher. He exhibited his
engravings at the Royal Academy 17861842. He was the father of John Charles,
Frederick and Clough Bromley. He worked in London. Bibliography: R K Engen,
Dictionary of Victorian Engravers, Print Publishers and Their Works, 1979.
Thomas Macklin (1752/31800) is most famous for his Poet's Gallery. He
planned to commission 100 paintings illustrating famous English poems.
However, the war with France cut into his profits, as prints could not be traded
across the channel, and his partner, Edward Rogers, died. Just two years after
beginning the Poet's Gallery, Macklin undertook to publish an illustrated folio
Bible in multiple volumes to promote "'the glory of the English school of
painting and engraving and the interest of our HOLY RELIGION. A new
typeface and a new kind of paper were designed and the finished Bible had 72
prints. Many of the same artists who participated in the Poet's Gallery worked on
the Bible project. 703 people signed the subscription list, including George III.
Macklin's Bible was expensive to produce: the total cost was estimated at 30,000.
To realize this project, he was forced to sell some of the paintings from the Poet's
Gallery by lottery in 1797. Macklin died in 1800, just five days after the last large
engraving was finished for the Bible. Bibliography: T.S.R.Boase, 'Macklin and
Bowyer', Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes XXVI 1963.

THE ADORATION OF THE MAGI
MARTEN DE VOS (15321603)

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

The three Kings bring gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Christ-child
sitting on the lap of the Virgin. One of the Kings, his crown and sceptre on the
ground besides an ammonite-shaped vessel, kneels down and kisses the hand of
Jesus. An engraving made by Jan Sadeler I after Marten de Vos. 1581. Flemish
school. Lettered below left: "M.DE. VOS I 1581" and at right "ISADLER.FE:/Cum
grat: et Pri: S.C.M". Dimensions: height: 190 millimetres; width: 130 millimetres.
One of a series on the childhood of Christ.
Marten de Vos (15321603) was a painter and draughtsman. He was a pupil of
Pieter de Vos, a follower of Frans Floris in Antwerp and of Jacopo Tintoretto in
Venice. During c. 1552-1556/58 he was in Italy, where he visited Rome, Venice
and possibly Florence. In 1558 he was a master in the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke.
By 1571 he was dean of the Guild. He is documented as a Lutheran in 1584,
adapting to the prevailing Catholicism in 1585. Apart from his sons Daniel and
Maarten the Younger, eleven pupils were registered with the Guild of whom
only Wenzel Coeberger is well known. He was also known as Maarten de Vos.
Jan Sadeler I (15501600?) was an engraver and publisher, eldest of three
brothers (with Aegidius I and Raphael I). Originally in Antwerp, c.1579 he
moved to Cologne and was also active in Mainz, Frankfurt and Munich. He left
Munich in 1595 and went to Verona, then moved to Venice with his brother
Raphael in 1596/7. He received the imperial privilege in 1581 and this was
renewed 1593. The papal privilege was granted c.1598. Sadeler's unclear
signature has led Hollstein to attribute some of his prints to the non- existent
J. Haeyler. Also was also known as Johannes Sadeler. Bibliography: Isabelle de
Ramaix in Le livre et l'estampe, XXXV 1989 pp.7-46 examines new documents
on the family and its genealogy.

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

The foster-father of Jesus is seated at a table at right, sleeping; the angel appears
at left; in the background, at right, the Virgin, kneels and reads a book. This
etching and engraving made by Francesco Polanzani after Jacques Stella
(formerly attributed to Nicolas Poussin). 1756. School: Italian. Dimensions:
height: 325 millimetres; width: 227 millimetres.
Jacques Stella (15961657) was a painter and engraver in the circle of Poussin. He
was in Rome 1623-34, then in Paris. Bibliography: S. Laveissire & L. Widerkehr,
'JS', Lyon, Muse des Beaux-Arts, 2006. Francesco Polanzani (1700after 1783)
was an engraver in Rome. His baptismal name was Francesco, but he seems
always to have been called Felice.
This is Plate 8 from a series of twenty-two plates depicting the life of the Virgin.
The habitual attribution of the compositions to Poussin has now been generally
rejected. Jacques Stella is now considered to be the actual designer of the set:
Claudine Bouzonnet-Stella's will (1697) mentions a series of twenty-two
drawings on the life of the Virgin executed by her uncle. Many of the original
drawings survive: one for 'Pentecost' is now in the British Museum. A later
edition of this set was published under the title 'La Vita della gran Madre di Dio'
by Venanzio Monaldini in 1783. Bibliography: Anthony Blunt, Jacques Stella,
the De Masso family and falsifications of Poussin, Burlington Magazine vol.
CXVI, December 1974, pp. 744-749.

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

The Virgin sit on the ground with the Christ-child in her lap, holding a water
bottle on a chain. Meanwhile, St Joseph adjusts the saddle on the donkey at right
under the shade of a tree. A path winds round the base of a hill and a river flows
in background at left. This engraving was made by Jacob Matham after Hendrik
Goltzius. 1589. School: Dutch. The print is signed and dated in the lower centre:
"HGoltzius Inuent. Ao.1589". Dimensions: height: 210 millimetres; width: 158
millimetres. There is a related drawing by Goltzius in Berlin.
Hendrik Goltzius (15581617) was a painter, engraver and publisher in Haarlem
between about 1582 and 1598. He established his own business in 1582, and for
the next six years held a monopoly in the northern Netherlands on publishing
designs by contemporary artists. Between 1586 and 1590 his print-publishing
activities blossomed and he travelled to Italy in 1590-91, leaving his stepson
Jacob Matham and Jan Saenredam in charge of the business. Around 1598 he
handed over all his engraving and publishing activities to Matham. Goltzius
gave up the business of printmaking completely after 1598 to concentrate on
painting until his death in 1617. Bibliography: exhibition catalogues from the
Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York and
Toledo Museum of Art Ohio (2003).
Jacob Matham (15711631) was an engraver and publisher in Haarlem who
married mother of Goltzius in 1579. He was in Italy 1593-7. After taking over the
Goltzius shop in Haarlem around 1600 he received his own privilege from
Prague in 1601.

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

This detail of a vignette by De Loutherbourg for Macklins Bible shows the
infant Christ in a cradle stroking the lamb of sacrifice at right and holding the
palm of martyrdom. A dying serpent representing Satan coils around a cross
with the superscription 'I N R I' at left. On the page there is letterpress in two
columns below and on verso, and the engraving is lettered below the image with
production details: "P.J. de Loutherbourg RA invt.", "J. Heath direxit". As with
the Headpiece to Hebrews, the print was made by James Heath. Dimensions:

37

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

The infant John the Baptist is shown whole-length seated to the right, holding a
cup to a waterfall with a lamb beside him to right. It is in fact a portrait of Master
Watkin Williams Wynn, son of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn Bart. This mezzotint
was made by John Dean after Sir Joshua Reynolds. School: British. Dimensions:
height: 171 millimetres; width: 250 millimetres.
Sir Joshua Reynolds (17231792) was the founder and first President of the Royal
Academy of Arts in 1768, to which he gave his lectures published as his
'Discourses'. He was an important collector of Old Master drawings, and many
of these are now held in the British Museum. Bibliography: E.Hamilton: 'A

CHRIST AMONG THE DOCTORS
BERNARDINO LUINI (1480-1532)

39

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

This print is after a work Gesu Christo disputandi co Dottori by Luini
which, when engraved, was believed to be by Leonardo. The painting is in the
National Gallery in London.
Bernardino Luini (1480/14851532 before) was a painter from Lago Maggiore
(Luini), Milan. The renowned Leonardo da Vinci (14521519), painter,
inventor, sculptor, engineer etc., was born in Vinci in 1452 and died at Amboise
in 1519. Having trained under Verrocchio in Florence he was in Milan 1483-99, in
Florence 1499 to 1506, and then returned to Milan. He was mainly in Rome
during 1513-6, then went to France in 1517 where he died. Bibliography: Kenneth
Clark, 'Leonardo da Vinci: an Account of His Development as an Artist'.

JOHN THE BAPTIST AT THE JORDAN
JAN VAN DER STRAET (15231605)
41

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

John the Baptist sits on a rock by a stream holding a dish; to the left, a reed cross
and ray of divine light symbolise his ministry; to the right, lamb (representin
Christ) drinks from the water. The mountainous landscape of the wilderness is
seen beyond. This engraving was made by Antonius Wierix after Jan van der
Straet and published by Philips Galle in Antwerp before 1604. Inscriptions:
lettered within the image: Ioan. Stradanus inven./Phls Galle excud.
Dimensions: height: 234 millimetres (image size); width: 180 millimetres.
Jan van der Straet (15231605) was a designer of prints and tapestries, mostly
known as Joannes Stradanus. Born in Bruges in 1532, he received early
instruction from his father Jan van der Straet (who died in 1535) and after for two
years from Maximillian Franck. During 1537-40 he trained in Antwerp under
Pieter Aertsen, and in c.1545 became a master in that city and in the same year
travelled to Italy via Lyon, where he worked with Corneille de Lyon. During his
first stay in Florence (1546-50) he designed tapestries for Cosimo de' Medici's
factory, the Arazzeria Medicea. During 1550-3 he was probably in Rome where
he collaborated with Daniele da Volterra in the Belvedere. Back in Florence he
made independent tapestry designs and from 1557 onwards worked under
Giorgio Vasari's supervision on the decoration of the Palazzo Vecchio. In 1563
and again in 1586 and 1591 he was an officer of the Accademia del Disegno, and
painted altar-pieces for several Florentine churches. In 1578 he designed two
series of 'Hunting Scenes' engraved by Philip Galle, later republished as one
series in c.1596. He worked too in Naples on frescoes and easel paintings. He
retired in1602 from the duties of the Accademia del Disegno and died in Florence
in 1605. Also known as Giovanni della Strada; Jan van der Straeten; Giovanni
Statenensis; Giovanni Stradano; Joannes Stradanus; Johannes Stradanus.
Bibliography: Alessandra Baroni Vannucci, JvdS, detto Giovanni Stradano,
Milan/Rome 1997 (with a catalogue of all the paintings, drawings and prints
made after his designs).
Antonius Wierix (1555/15591604) was one of three brothers, all engravers in
Antwerp. He had a father and a son with the same name, but this Antonius is by
far the best known of the three.
Philips Galle (15371612) was a leading engraver and print dealer based in
Antwerp. Born in 1537 in Haarlem, he moved to Antwerp in 1569 where he
worked in the workshop of Hieronymus Cock. After 1557 he started his own
publishing and print business, for which he travelled extensively: in 1560-61 he
visited the southern Netherlands, France, Germany and Italy. After 1564 he
settled in Antwerp. He was one of the most prolific publishers in Europe in the
second half of the sixteenth century. He was also known as Philippe Galle and
Philippus Gallaeus. Bibliography: M. Sellink, Philips Galle (1537-1612) Engraver
and print publisher in Haarlem and Antwerp, Amsterdam 1997.

CHRIST IS BAPTISED
GIOVANNI FRANCESCO PENNI (14881528)

45

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

The Baptism of Christ is depicted, with angels at right and men removing their
clothes at left. A reproduction of the fresco by Giovanni Francesco Penni in the
13th arcade of the Vatican Logge (often referred-to as Raphaels Bible). Date:
around 1518. School: Roman. Dimensions of print: height: 197 millimetres; width:
385 millimetres. For a long time the fresco was believed to be by Giulio Romano
but scholars are now convinced that it was by Penni. The British Museum has a
related pen and brown ink drawing which is inscribed on the back "Stupendo
Disegno di propria mano di Raffale d'Urbino dipinto in Roma nelle loggi
Vaticane" and Bowyer himself would have no doubt regarded the fresco as by
Raphael.
Giovanni Francesco Penni (c.1488c.1528) was a painter. Known as il Fattore,
he was born in Florence, and died in Naples, c. 1528, aged forty (according to
Vasari). Archival evidence, however, gives 1496 as his birth-date and the style of
his later drawings does indeed postulate a death-date not much before 1536.
Vasari says that he helped Raphael in, among other things, the tapestry cartoons
(1515-16), the Psyche loggia in the Farnesina (1518) and the Vatican Logge
(finished 1519). He collaborated with Giulio Romano in painting, between 1520
and 1524, the Monteluce Coronation (Vatican Gallery) and the Sala di
Costantino; also in a copy (in the Prado), which he finished somewhat later,
alone, of Raphael's Transfiguration. A signed portrait of a young man is in the
National Gallery, Dublin. Bibliography: D. Colnaghi, A Dictionary of Florentine
Painters, London, 1928, p. 202;

after Raphael below.

JACOB DE WIT (16951754) AFTER PETER PAUL RUBENS

47

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

Christ is tempted by Satan. The engraved drawing was by Jacob de Wit after
Peter Paul Rubens. 1711-12. School: Dutch. This print is from a group of 36
drawings after Peter Paul Rubens' ceiling panels in the Jesuit Church, Antwerp,
for engraving and publication by Jan Punt. Dimensions: height: 340 millimetres;
width: 403 millimetres.
Jacob de Wit (16951754) was a painter, draughtsman and etcher. He was born
and died in Amsterdam. In 1708 he was in Antwerp; in 1714 a Master in
Antwerp. Between c. 1711 and 1712 he drew the 36 paintings by Rubens at the
Jesuit Church and etched ten of these before returning to Amsterdam. He was
also known as Jean Baptiste de Wit.

ANGELS MINISTER TO CHRIST
BERNARDINO PASSERI (FL. 15771585)

49

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

Christ is served by angels. Jesus is seen seated under a large rock with angels
serving him with trays filled with food and drinks. He blesses the food. To the
right, angels are seen arriving from the sky with more trays; animals, including a
porcupine, can be seen in the foreground eating the crumbs. This engraving was
made by Hieronymus Wierix after Bernardino Passeri. Published in Antwerp in
1563 it is from Nadals Evangelicae Historiae Imagines (see below) . It is signed
on plate with initials: Bern. Pass. Rom. Invent and Hieronymus W. fecit.
Dimensions: height 175 mms; width 142 mms. Of the 153 plates of the
Evangelicae Historiae Imagines 20 were done by printmakers other than
Wierix. The inscriptions in the margins and the numbers have been trimmed off.
Bernardino Passeri (fl. 15771585) was a painter, designer, engraver and print
publisher. He was active in Rome. He designed for prints, as for the 50 plates of
the life of St Benedict engraved by Aliprando Caprioli and published in Rome in
1579. He also executed plates himself, as in the 1583 financing agreement with
the Fleming Anastasius Ariges to produce 35 religious prints. He was also
known as Bernardo Passaro and Bernardus Passerus.

Jernimo Nadal (15071580), a Spaniard from Majorca, was one of the first ten
members of the Society of Jesus (a.k.a. the Jesuits). For many years he served
as the personal representative or "delegate" of the founder, St. Ignatius of
Loyola (1491-1556), in visiting Jesuit houses throughout Europe, especially to
explain and implement the Constitutions of the Society of Jesus. Ignatius himself
urged Nadal to compile and distribute an illustrated guide for prayerful
meditation on the Gospels, in the tradition of the Spiritual Exercises, although
the work was not completed until after both men had died. Nadal selected the
biblical scenes to be included, commissioned and directed the layout of the
illustrations, and composed notes to accompany each scene. With the
cooperation and support of Antwerp publishers Christophe Plantin and
Martinus Nutius, 153 engravings were eventually produced by Bernardino
Passeri, Marten de Vos, and Jerome and Anton Wierix. In 1593 these illustrations
were published in a volume entitled Evangelicae Historiae Imagines ("Illustrations
of the Gospel Stories"), arranged in chronological order of the life and ministry of
Jesus. In 1594 and 1595 they were again published in larger volumes, entitled
Adnotationes et Meditationes in Evangelia ("Notes and Meditations on the
Gospels"), with more extensive accompanying text, and rearranged according to
the order of readings used in the liturgical year, as prescribed in the Roman
Missal.

the 153 Images taken from Jerome Nadal's 1595 book ADNOTATIONES ET
MEDITATIONES IN EVANGELIA. Fairfield, CT: Fairfield Jesuit Community,

THE WEDDING AT CANA
TADDEO ZUCCARO (15291566)

55

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

A representation the marriage-feast at Cana at which Jesus turned water into
wine. Christ, radiating light, sits at a long table with various guests; a series of
steps lead up to the table and the room is flanked by columns. In the foreground
are a number of servants, including one pouring wine into another container, one
climbing the steps and another waiting on the sidelines at right with a dish of
food. This engraving was made by Jacob Matham (see above) after Taddeo
Zuccaro. Published in Haarlem by Robert de Boudous. 1616. School:
Netherlandish. The print is lettered below centre on a scroll: "Ioh, 2 NUPTI IN
CANA GALILE./Taddeo, Zucchero, inu, I. Mattham sculp./Robb. de Baudous
excudit, 1617". The print appears to be a reproduction of a fresco, but the location
of the original painting is obscure. Dimensions: height: 296 millimetres; width:
405 millimetres.
Taddeo Zuccaro (15291566) was a painter who worked in Rome. He was born in
S. Angelo in Vado (in the Roman Marches) in 1529, and died in Rome in 1566.
The fragmentary nature of his work-record, and style-shifts reflecting the artistic
developments of the period have aroused some fascination among art-historians.
He came to Rome at the age of 14, where he principally trained himself by
copying earlier masters. His recorded work before 1553 has disappeared, and his
early development can be reconstructed only from drawings. The influence of
Correggio and Parmigianino is discernible in some of his drawings of c. 1550 and
in some of his earliest surviving paintings. Until c. 1551 Zuccaro seems to have
been chiefly occupied with faade decorations in the manner of Polidoro. During
1550-1 he was employed on minor commissions for Pope Julius III. In 1551 he
was in Urbino. He returned to Rome in 1553 and between 1553 and 1555
collaborated with Prospero Fontana on the decoration of Villa Giulia. During
1553-6 Zuccaro worked on S. M. della Consolazione, Mattei Chapel, executing
scenes of the Passion in an exaggeratedly Mannerist style derived from Francesco
Salviati and Tibaldi. After various minor papal commissions he returned to
Urbino in 1560 to paint portrait of Virginia della Rovere, daughter of Duke
Guidobaldo II. Vasari states that Zuccaro had returned to Rome and was at work
in SS. Trinit dei Monti in 1566. The evidence of drawings establishes that he
received the original commission for the high altarpiece in S. Lorenzo in Damaso,
probably not long before his death. Federico completed this and other
commissions were left unfinished. He was also known as Taddeo Zuccari.

(1965), pp. 199ff.; Two of Taddeo Zuccaro's last commissions, completed by
Federico Zuccaro, Burlington, cviii (1966), pp. 286ff., and pp. 341ff.; Louvre

There are no other prints after Zuccaro in the Bowyer Bible.

THE MIRACULOUS DRAUGHT OF FISHES
RAFFAELLO SANZIO (1483 1520)

57

PHILLIP MEDHURST. THE EARLY LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE BOWYER BIBLE

Christ sits in the boat at left, with five men accompanying him and drawing fish
from the water; etched and engraved after a drawing by Raphael. Published by
John Bowles in London c. 1721. School: Italian. Dimensions: height: 357 mms;
width: 432 mms. From a series of eight plates (a title and seven scenes)
reproducing the cartoons executed by Raphael for a series of tapestries for the
Sistine Chapel, commissioned by Pope Leo X. (The cartoons are now in the
Victoria & Albert Museum.) This is Plate 4. The title-plate, by Chaperon Fame
Crowning Raphael is found in the Bowyer Bible as print 5 in Volume 1.

Raphael (1483 1520) was at the peak of his reputation while Bowyer was
interleaving his Bible, and he was not displaced in Britain until the
Pre-Raphaelite movement of the later nineteenth century. It is therefore no
surprise to find so many prints relating to him in the Bowyer Bible. Bowyer
himself commissioned and published a series of engravings showing details
from Raphaels famous Transfiguration. They are all in the Bowyer Bible and
listed below. Raphael is also known as Raffaello Santi, Raffaello Sanzio, and
Raffaello.
