PT: I will always remember and be grateful for what Jesus did on the cross.
PV: Hebrews 9:22b ". . . without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness."
INTRODUCTION
We are starting a brand news series this March entitled - GOOD NEWS! We love good
news. When we hear good news, it excites us and it fires us up. Because our topic is
Good News, I have some good news . . . after the service, everyone will get FREE
SNACKS! Now the bad news is. . . I am just kidding. When I said everybody would
get free snacks, you felt excited. When I said that I was just kidding, you became sad
or disappointed.
If theres good news, theres bad news too. The bad news is that we are sinners and
destined to be punished eternally. The good news is that God has a solution to our
problem. Thats what we are going to discuss in this series.
CONNECT
On a piece of paper, I want you to write as many as possible, the things you can't
afford to forget. For example, your name. You can't afford to forget your name. What
are other things that you can't forget? The top 3 kids with the most number of things
written get a prize. I will give you 30 seconds for this activity. Timer starts now!
How many were able to write 5 things, raise your hand. More than 5? 7? 10?
In the same way, Jesus asked His disciples to remember two important things that
they can't afford to forget.
WORD
Jesus was having dinner with His disciples. But this was no ordinary dinner; it was the
Passover meal. Once a year the Jews celebrate the Passover to remind them that they
have been set them free by God from slavery in Egypt.
Lets read Luke 22:14 . . .
Luke 22:14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15 And
he said to them, I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.
17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, Take this and divide it among you.
18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of
God comes.
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, This is
my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.
20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new
covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.[a] 21 But the hand of him who is
going to betray me is with mine on the table. 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been
decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him! 23 They began to question among
themselves which of them it might be who would do this.

THE LAST SUPPER

A lot of emotions were happening at this moment. Judas was planning to betray
Jesus. The disciples were arguing who was the greatest among them. Jesus was
teaching something important that He wanted His disciples to remember.
As an act of obedience, today, we call this communion. It's remembering what
happened that night or what we now call the Last Supper. There were two things
Jesus wanted His disciples to do and remember.
1. His body was broken.
Jesus took the bread and broke it and gave it to His disciples. The bread that was
broken symbolizes the body of Jesus being broken or being beaten up. Jesus wants all
His disciples to remember His suffering. He suffered for you and me. We will never
appreciate Jesus' love for us until we realize how much He suffered for us. When we
partake of communion we remember Jesus sacrifice on the cross and we show our
deep gratitude for what Jesus did on the cross for you and me.
ILLUSTRATION: PUSH UPS
I need a volunteer (choose a boy who you think CANNOT do 20 push-ups). I have
here a prize. I'll give this to you if you can do 20 push-ups. (Let the kid try it.) Come
on, don't give up, you can do it! If you can't make 20 push-ups, I can't give the prize.
PLAY VIDEO OF TEACHER DOING PUSH UPS
All right, let's give Teacher a round of applause as he does 20 push-ups. Teacher in
video does 20 push-ups.
Thank you Teacher for those 20 push-ups. Let's give Teacher a round of applause.
Interview the boy who got the PRIZE. How do you feel? Grateful or sad? Of course,
you are grateful. You can't do the 20 push-ups. Because of that, you can't have the
prize. But there's someone who is willing to do it so you enjoy the prize.
We sinned against God and the penalty for sin is death; and we can't afford to pay it.
There's no way we can pay for it. Jesus paid the price for our sins so we can enjoy
eternal life with Him.
Why is it important for us to remember Jesus sacrifice? So we won't forget that we
don't have to pay for our sins with our own good works. Jesus has paid our sins
already. Jesus did not just do 20 push-ups for us, He paid for our sins with His own
life.
2. His blood was shed.
Let's read our Power Verse . . .
PV: Hebrews 9:22b ". . . without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness."
The Bibles tells us that without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins.
Jesus wants us to remember that we have been bought, forgiven, and cleansed by His
blood. We are made righteous by Jesus finished work on the cross and not by our own
good works.

ILLUSTRATION: DIRTY PLATE

You go to a restaurant and the waiter gives you a dirty plate, spoon, and fork,
unwashed, used by the previous person who ate there. Are you going to accept them
and use that plate and eat from there? Yuck! That's what we look like with our sins in
God's eyes. Were actually worse than that. It's not acceptable. You want a new plate,
a clean one. Jesus cleansed us with His own precious blood so that we'll be acceptable
to God. This is who we are now in God's eyes, FORGIVEN, cleansed by the blood of
Jesus Christ.
Why is important to remember that Jesus' blood was shed on the cross? Because we
easily forget that we are no longer slaves to sin. We need to remind ourselves that
when we sin and ask God for forgiveness, He will forgive us of our sins. When Jesus
died on the cross, He paid not just for our past sins but also for the sins that we'll be
committing in the future.
APPLICATION
Heres what we need to do.
1.

Always remember what Jesus did for us.

Let's not forget what Jesus did on the cross for you and me. It's a demonstration of
His love for us, that while we were still sinners, God's enemies, He died for you and
me.
2.

Always have a grateful heart towards Jesus.

When we understand what Jesus did for us, that we don't deserve it, and yet salvation
was given to us, our response is worship. Everyday we come to God in worship with a
grateful heart. Instead of coming to Him demanding things, we come to Him with
thanksgiving.
Thats why our Power Truth says . . .
PT: I will always remember and be grateful for what Jesus did on the cross.
ALTAR CALL
Do you remember the 10 plagues of Egypt? The 10th plague was the killing of all the
firstborn male, whether man or animal. In order for the Israelites to be spared from
that judgment, they needed to kill a lamb without defect, cook it and eat it, and
sprinkle the blood on their doorpost.
Exodus 12:12 On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every
firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of
Egypt. I am the LORD. 13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you
are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch
you when I strike Egypt.
Every year the Jews celebrate that day with a Passover meal, to remind them of the
time when God rescued them from slavery in Egypt. Fast forward to several hundreds

of years, in the Last Supper, Jesus was telling His disciples that He will be the ultimate
sacrifice, the Lamb of God whose blood will be shed so we will be spared from God's
judgment. This is the Good News of Jesus Christ; this is what we are remembering
every time there's communion. We are sinners doomed for eternal punishment,
cleansed by the blood of Jesus, now forgiven, righteous in the eyes of God.
PT: I will always remember and be grateful for what Jesus did on the cross.
