Effective Performance Management drives business results that accomplish the


goals of the organization. This course will provide the skills needed to create and
maintain effective performance management programs. It is designed to help
participants effectively manage performance on both the formal and informal
levels.

Performance management is not just about a formal review once a year. It is part

of each staff member. In this course participants will learn a whole range of tools
and techniques to help them manage performance.

able to use techniques and approaches that fit in with your organisations culture.

PROFILE
Catherine Mattice is experienced in organizational
communication, customer relations, human resources,
business development, management and training.
She specializes in providing solutions for negative
behaviors in the workplace, and helping her clients realize
positive corporate cultures through systemic action plans.
Mattice is also a subject matter expert on the topic of
workplace bullying, having researched and published in
that area since 2004.
Mattice is co-author of the book, Back Off! Your Kick-Ass
Guide to Ending Bullying at Work and author of Seeking
Civility: How Leaders, Managers and HR Can Create a
Workplace Free of Bullying and Abusive Conduct. She has
also published in a variety of other venues, including two
books and over 40 trade magazines such as HR Times, the
Journal of Employee Assistance, Personal Development
Magazine, and Training & Development Magazine. She has
also appeared in USA Today, Inc Magazine and MSNBC as
an expert, and presented her research and training
programs at national and international conferences.
Mattice is a founding member of the United States
National Workplace Bullying Coalition, and active in the
International Association for Workplace Bullying &
Harassment (IAWBH) and Past-President of the American
Society of Training & Development (ASTD). She is also an
adjunct professor at National University, Southwestern
College, and Brandman University, where she teaches
communication courses.
Mattice has worked with the third largest energy company
in the world, the American Red Cross, the U.S. Marine
Corps and U.S. Navy, government agencies, universities,
hospitals, and a variety of other nonprofits, small
businesses, and private companies ranging in size and
industry.

DAY1 PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT BASICS
This section will serve as an introduction to performance management.
Defining performance management
Factors influencing employee performance
Principles of effective performance management programs
The performance management cycle
Tying organizational values into performance management
Setting organizational performance standards
Developing the right kind of performance management programs and
appraisal processes for your organization
The key skills of a leader who engages in performance management
The importance of a job analysis to performance management, and how to
conduct one
Using job analysis data as an HR management tool
Designing work using job analysis data

DAY2 CONDUCTING PERFORMANCE


APPRAISALS
This section will address the performance appraisal conversation.
Creating a performance evaluation balanced scorecard
Setting strategic individual objectives, including SMART goals
Collecting evidence to objectively support performance evaluations
Preparing for the performance appraisal meeting
Conducting performance appraisal meetings in a structured and positive way,
in order to increase performance
Addressing poor performance with confidence
Role play delivering a performance appraisal
Avoiding mistakes in the performance evaluation process
Creating an ongoing employee development plan
