A sociological analysis of the origins, development, and reactions surrounding
deviance in contemporary society. A major issue of sociology concerns the nature of
social organization over various epochs. This course will examine the distinction
between norms and deviance, including issues of rule making and rule breaking
behavior. The role of group labeling, stigma, power, and competing notions of
propriety will be carefully considered, as well as the ideologies of cosmopolitanism
