2014 Global Tobacco Control Leadership Program


Welcome! - On behalf of The Institute for Global Tobacco Control (IGTC) at the Johns Hopkins
Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH) we welcome you to the 9th Annual Global Tobacco
Control Leadership Program, a 10-day leadership training program aimed at building effective
leadership in tobacco control. As part of the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, the
Program aims to develop and enhance leadership in countries experiencing the greatest burden of
disease from tobacco use. In this regard, the Program focuses on building capacity to develop,
implement and enforce effective tobacco control policy interventions.
The Program sessions emphasize leadership principles in relation to a range of tobacco controlrelated topics structured around the components of the World Health Organization's MPOWER
package and delivered by a faculty comprised of international experts in tobacco control leadership,
policy, communications, research, advocacy and surveillance.

Program Objectives - The overall program objectives are to:


1. Enhance leadership and networking skills to affect policy development and implementation;
2. Apply principles and theories of leadership and best practices in tobacco control to address
country-specific issues and challenges;
3. Strengthen skills in policy intervention development and implementation and strategic
communication; and
4. Engage with and enhance collaboration among a wide range of partners in the tobacco control
movement.
At the completion of this Program, participants will:

Have enhanced leadership and networking skills to advocate for, enact and implement effective
policy change;
Be able to better utilize tobacco control-related evidence to advance policy development and
implementation;
Have strengthened skills in strategic communication;
Be able to better apply evidence-based best practices in tobacco control to address countryspecific issues and challenges; and
Have strengthened ties and linkages to international colleagues.

Competencies - At the conclusion of the Program, participants will have strengthened


competencies in:

Leadership and strategic communication in managing tobacco control change;


Building collaborative partnerships; and
MPOWER policy intervention design and implementation.
