After he won the fifth stage of the Santos Tour Down Under
between Snapper Point and Willunga on January 23, Luis León
Sánchez will start tomorrow in Mallorca his European calendar.
Luis León will start in the first event the Palma Trophy as well as
in the third one, Inca Trophy (February 9) and the fifth one,
Magaluf –Palmanova Trophy (February 11).
You had very few days to rest at home when you came back from
Australia before flying again to Mallorca and join the training camp your
team organized. How did you manage that situation?
“It was not really easy to come back in the European cold
weather after it was so hot in Australia, but of course I was really
delighted by my victory in the Tour Down Under. I rested two or
three days without training on my bike, or just a little. Now I am
trying to be find good shape again. It has been a good thing to
come in Mallorca where I had the possibility to take part in good
training sessions together with my team-mates. Thanks to the
job I achieved this week and the three days of competition which
expect me next week in the Challenge I hope to arrive in
condition at the start of the Tour of Algarve. Many good riders
will be at the start and I hope to be at the best ones’ level.”
We used to see you in Paris-Nice but this year you prefer to race in
Tirreno-Adriatico. What motivated such a change?
“This year the idea was to start the season with more tranquility
than the previous ones. What happens is that thanks to the good
weather we use to have in Murcia even in winter, the riders from
our region use to be in good condition as soon as the years
begins. We can train without interruption, which is not the case
of many other riders and I won a race as soon as 2010 began. In
Paris-Nice, mainly as last winner, I would have had to face a lot
of pressure in a very demanding race, from the first till the last
day. It is necessary to spend a lot of energy to win such a race
and that is the reason why last winter we thought it could be a
good idea to change the program and participate in Tirreno. It
means a new and different experience, which also means a new
source of inspiration and motivation. The route is an interesting
one and I like it, with a long time trial, a stage finishing at the
top of a mountain and another one in middle mountain. I will try
to be ahead and obtain a good result before competing in Milan-
Sanremo where, like I did last year, I will try to surprise the
sprinters. ”
