SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
Earlier this year, Strathmores Strategic Economic Development Priorities and Implementation report was released with advice
on ways to grow as a town, bring new community growth, both commercially and residentially, and assist existing businesses and
residents.
Through meetings with business owners,
town administration and council, 45 initiatives were developed - two of which were
vetoed with people being strongly opposed.
Its quite interesting that some of the items
that council picked as priorities, the business
people picked as priorities as well, said Chief
Administrative Officer for Strathmore Dwight
Stanford.
One example he gave was lots of discussion
on having an incubator in the community. An
incubator is a space set up with either small
offices or dividers that different individuals
can rent.
Stanford said its important that the rent is
reasonable, and some areas could be a little
bigger and allow artists to create, or sell, their
work.
We all think, and I do too, that it would be
very, very beneficial, said Stanford. People
that are working out of their basements, or
a room in their house, could get out of the
house. They could go to their office and they
could do their work there, get some help in
the front when they need it.
Incubators provide small business owners
and entrepreneurs a chance to get their businesses off the ground with minimal risk, and
low overhead costs.
Increasing economic development capacity
was also high on the list in the report, with a
business investment attraction program suggested.
Another initiative that both sides agreed
with was the need to continue, and accelerate, the revitalization of downtown. The
report states that specific tactics have been
suggested including re-evaluating and initiating a Downtown Business Association and
rejuvenating/revitalizing the Strathmore and
District Chamber of Commerce. Researching
each of the initiatives outlined is the first step
before beginning the implementation stage.
More information about the report, and the
towns plans can be found at http://strathmore.ca/economic_development.

Back in the Saddle kicks-off for busy summer

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

The Alberta Rockies Gay Rodeo Association (ARGRA)
hosted their first event of the summer on May 9, hoping to
bond with the Strathmore community.
The Back in the Saddle event was held at the Strathmore
Civic Centre and was planned to be a get-together with live
music from singer Jake Matthews and Calgary-based singer
Kyemara.
As the association has big plans for their rodeo this year,
and the time leading up to it, Jason Baker, president of ARGRA says the event was a chance to introduce themselves to
the people of Strathmore, and hope that the town will take
part in the festivities.
As the association is run entirely by volunteers all the proceeds raised that night will go towards the Alberta Rockies International Rodeo, as well as some charities picked by
ARGRA.
Along with raising money, they hoped to be able to have
fun and inform people about the rodeo.
The event, however, had a poor turnout, meaning the association will have to re-think a few things as well as pull
out of the donations to the charities.
In an e-mail Baker says that with all the money and business they bring to Strathmore, they had hoped for more support. However they still have more plans for the town.
On June 26 to 28 the association will be hosting their annual rodeo as well as a whole new Music Festival that will
see the musical talents of Leeann Rimes, the Village People,
Emerson Drive and much more. The artists have all been
supportive in the planning of the festival and Baker said the
support from the stars has been fundamental.
During the day spectators can enjoy child-friendly grounds

while enjoying local bands. Then at night the stars will put
on the music festival while the associations Tornado nightclub will cater for adults.
The rodeo is for everyone, gay or straight, which is something the association wants people to know.
We are not a gay rodeo but an equal one, says Baker. If
you want to be a woman bull-rider, good for you, or if you
want to be a male barrel-rider, then good for you. We have
events that in a normal rodeo a woman would never have a
chance to compete in, but we are a little different.
The event will bring in about 5,000 people every day to
Strathmore as well as a couple million dollars. Baker hopes
that more people from the town will come out and have fun.
It has always been the Rockies International Rodeo, the
fact that its put on by a gay association is immaterial for us
it is a safe place for everybody, says Baker. We dont care
whether you are straight or gay, just come on out, have fun,
and enjoy yourself.

Looking for the next rodeo queen, princess

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Stampede Royalty
committee are looking for a new Stampede Queen and Princess this rodeo
season. The Miss Strathmore Stampede
contest will see two girls, between the
ages of 18-24 crowned with the titles
on Aug. 1.
We are having a queen and a princess. The princess will not be expected
to do any travelling, but we need to
have a princess just in case something
happens with the Queen that she cant
fulfill her duties for the remainder of
the year, thats the only criteria, said
chair of the Miss Strathmore Stampede
committee Judi Wilson.
Once they become queen, they go
after their own sponsors to travel, so
its not going to be a cost to the Ag Society.
She said they have a great team put
together, which includes Becca Walters,
reigning Stampede Queen, and Amanda Jasman who won the princess contest in 2000, which Wilson said, was the

last year Strathmore held a contest.

The successful candidates will be
busy over the month leading up to the
rodeo.
Theyre going to be judged all the
way through on everything, said Wilson.
Becca is going to look after them all
through the rodeo. She is going to arrange appearances for them.
On July 18 the girls will take part in
a horsemanship challenge at the Lausen arena. July 23 will see them strut
their stuff, assisted by cowboys, in the
fashion show at the Civic Centre at 7
p.m. There will be no dinner, but there
will be hors doeuvres, a cash bar and
a silent auction. Tickets will be $40 and
can be purchased through the Ag Society or one of the committee members.
July 25 is the public speaking portion
in the Chuck Mercer room at 10 a.m.
The big day for the contestants is
Aug. 1 when the queen and princess
will be crowned in front of the rodeo
audience.
Applications are being accepted until June 30. Contestants must have an

extensive knowledge of the community and rodeo, be an expert horseman

and a good public speaker, and able
to travel. The Queen will have the opportunity to run for Ms. Rodeo Canada
at the Canadian Finals Rodeo. The application can be found online at http://

Q: Should children go to a funeral?

A: Every child is different. Children will grieve

a death but it is often misinterpreted as being

cranky or moody. The best way to deal
with children surrounding a death is to be
very open and honest with them. Even if they
dont fully understand the implications of
death, it is best to explain it to them. Terms
like gone away or went to sleep can create a
misunderstanding, and even fear, of going away
or to sleep because they may not come back,
like the deceased did. Often people try to shield
their children from death but it is often much
more important for them to experience the same
things as adults so that they can be involved
with the family, rather than excluded from such
an important event. There is nothing that occurs
at a funeral that would be inappropriate for
children to experience. For more information
on this topic, please visit our website.

YOUR WEEKLY

Here to stay: local reporter

joins the Strathmore Times
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Many of you might be surprised to
see my name printed in the Strathmore
Times. Having covered events, breaking
news, and town and county council for
the other paper over the past year, I am
thrilled to join the
team at the Strathmore Times.
A year ago, I
moved to Strathmore
and was quickly captivated by the town,
its residents, and the
push to grow as a
community. Ive had
the pleasure of getting to know hardworking individuals
and
organizations,
stood in the infield
to capture the action of running with
the bulls, listened to
town council tackle
local issues, reported
on events such as
Canada Day, and reported on everything in-between. Having grown up in Germany, and then in a
small town in British Columbia, I grew
rather fond of this town. I have never
experienced such willingness by the
community to pitch in and help each
other out within a small town. When

the opportunity arose, I was happy to

embark upon the next adventure as the
associate editor with the Times.
Strathmore is not the first small town
I have reported on. While a student at
Mount Royal University, I contributed
to the Calgary Journal and the Reflector. I was a reporter for the Salmon Arm
Observer and Eagle
Valley News, worked
as a radio and online
reporter in current
affairs and news for
Germanys international
broadcaster
Deutsche Welle, and
worked as a freelancer in London,
England. I received
my Bachelor in Communications with a
major in Journalism
and was fortunate to
have received training by journalists
from the New York
Times, the Economist, and the BBC
in a foreign correspondence training
course in Prague.
Over the last year, I have learned
that there is never a dull moment in
Strathmore. I cant think of anything
more fulfilling than journalism, and will
continue to work hard to portray your
community in print.

Library gains charity status

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

For a number of years the Strathmore
Municipal Library staff and board members have known that additional space
is required, and one of the things holding them back are funds. Thats why
last year a society was formed that then
worked to gain charitable status.
About a year ago we formed the
Strathmore and Community Library
Fundraising Society, and the purpose of
it was to raise funds of course for the library, said Richard Woodford, chair of
the library board. Thats the long term
goal, is to try and get a new library
building, but given the economic times
it is probably going to take awhile before that is realized.
Now that all the ducks are lined up in
a row, the society is working on organizing fundraising events. The first one
will be held on June 13, and Woodford
said the plan is to just start with a book
sale.
Afterwards, depending on how many
people are part of the society board,

plans will begin for different fundraising initiatives.

The goal for the society is simple
just to raise money. Once that is done,
then the board will decide what the
next steps will be. Theres already discussion about approaching the town,
and the province, when the time comes
to discuss cost sharing.
Woodford has been an active member of the library, and its board, since
moving to Strathmore.
As a former educator I am very, very
supportive of libraries and have worked
in several myself, and one of the first
things I checked out when I moved to
Strathmore was the library, said Woodford. I am delighted to say we have just
an excellent librarian with Rachel, and
also with the assistant director Carmen,
and staff at the library.
Donations can be made directly
at the Strathmore Municipal Library,
which is housed in the Lambert Centre.
To become a member of the society, or
to volunteer, leave your name with the
staff at the library and it will be passed
on to Woodford and the board.

Are you a mosquito-attractor? You are if you have

type O blood or if youre a beer-drinker. If you fit
into these categories, you will be more attractive to
bees. Repellants containing DEET are still the best
mosquito repellants. And by the way, eating lots of
garlic and taking extra vitamin B supplements wont
help.
Many people want to get rid of excess belly fat. We
know that kind of fat is bad for our health. One of the
first things to look at when considering this problem
is your alcohol intake. Alcohol seems to cause belly
fat more than other foods because the liver is working
hard to metabolize the alcohol and has less energy to
burn off the fat which can result in weight gain.
We often hear about the high cost of medications
here and around the world. Perhaps the worlds
most expensive drug is eculizumab which would cost
$500,000 per year to use. It is used to treat a very
rare blood disorder called atypical hemolytic uremic
syndrome. Sort of adds perspective to drug costs.
Here is a list of birth control methods and their
relative rates of effectiveness:
Implants, IUDs, vasectomy and tubal ligation: 99%;
the birth control pill shot (every 3 months): 97%; the
pill, patch and vaginal ring: 92-95%; condoms,
diaphragm, cervical cap and birth control sponge: 8489%. In contrast, if no birth control is practiced, the
efficacy is 15%.
If you need more information about the various birth
control methods, talk to our pharmacy staff. We are
knowledgeable and approachable.

Thank you Strathmore-Brooks

DEREK FILDEBRANDT
Wildrose MLA for Strathmore-Brooks

Thank you Strathmore-Brooks. I am
humbled and honoured by the trust
that you have placed in me.
To those who voted for me, I will
honour your trust, follow through on
my commitments and endeavor to earn
your trust again. To those who did not
vote for me, I will serve your interests
in the best way that I can, and even if
we disagree on policy matters as they
arise over the next four years, I will
still be the same plain speaking MLA
that I was as a candidate.
I also want to thank Molly Douglass,
Lynn McWilliam, Einar Davidson, Mike
Worthington and Glen Dundas for
standing for election and strengthening the democratic process.
The May 5 Election was a victory for
Albertans and for democracy. The PC
one-party state with its stranglehold on
power is dead. Alberta now has a competitive two-party system with a clear
democratic-socialist option in the NDP
on the left, and a clear conservative
option in the Wildrose on the centreright.

Legion looks
for veterans!

I committed to you that I would serve you above party

interests, and I will stand by that. I will fight to implement
recall legislation and to require the transparent disclosure
of MLA expenses.
I will fight for proper healthcare for our seniors by shutting the tap on subsidies to the PC owners of the Kananaskis golf course.
While Albertans voted for change, many of them didnt
know who and what they were electing in many constituencies. In an understandable rush to throw the PCs out,
many students and others who had never held a real job in
their lives were elected as NDP MLAs. The NDP platform
itself was also given a pass by the media as most believed
that they would never win.
While I have a great deal of personal respect for Premierelect Rachel Notley, the NDP platform contains in it many
dangerous and extreme policies that could further undermine the Alberta Advantage beyond what the PC government has done over the last decade.
While it may sound easy, raising business taxes or raising
oil royalties has the very real possibility of throwing the
province and especially our community into a full-blown
recession.
The NDPs promise to raise business taxes is unlikely to
collect as much revenue than they project, as that partys
ideology doesnt believe that businesses will do less business if business conditions are less profitable.
The NDPs platform was never intended to be implemented in government, and so contains promises to spend on everything under the sun without the consequences of reality.
While the now flopped PC budget would raise taxes, take
on even more debt, and continue the provinces unsustainable spending spree, the NDP platform appears likely to do
all of these things at an accelerated rate.
While Albertans elected a new government, they also
elected a reinvigorated and larger Official Opposition in the

LIFE IS DIFFICULT
Life is difficult. No, Im not worried that I will not have sufficient
to eat. Im not worried that I will
have nowhere to sleep. I have
been extraordinarily fortunate.
I have taken advantage of the
many opportunities for education
that abound and have more than
a few years of post-secondary
schooling under my belt. I have
had opportunity to travel and
have visited places just for fun
and the joy of experiencing new
things but also travelled with a
purpose. Thrice Ive travelled to
serve and to learn about peoples lives in developing nations.
And I live in a country where,
for the most part, health care is
accessible. So why is it I open
with Life is difficult?
Just this week I received news
that a dear friend died. You
expect your grandparents and
eventually your parents to pass,
but when your friends start
dying, it hits a little closer to
home. Ive friends living with
debilitating diseases. I know
many who are unemployed with
few prospects lined up. I know
people, here in Strathmore, who
run out of money before months

shortage of domestic abuse and

If you are a critical thinker there
are issues to grapple with. How
do my choices affect the environment? How much garbage
should I be producing? Do I
choose the plastic item which
will be found intact in the landfill
by some archeologist 1000 years

What is it I want?

and God are united in relationship, so are we united with

Meeting the Queen

Timothy Steeves did a wonderful job on the violin
performing Sonata No. 6 for Solo Violin by Eugene Ysaya at the 19th annual Music Festival at
Strathmore Alliance Church on May 14.

Cameron Drummond was in Europe on April 27 with the Calgary Highlanders Pipe band. Cameron is a corporal with the Highlanders and is
one of eight pipers along with drummers and Highland Dancers who
were on a Battlefield tour. The Battlefield tour brought them to London
to play for Queen Elizabeth - she inspected the troops in London - as
well as to Belgium and Paris. The band left for the trip the evening of
April 17 and returned home to Calgary on May 2.

Times Reporter

In the 21 years from 1994 to 2015 the Town
of Strathmore has changed rapidly, and while
growth did slow down a bit for a few years, things
are looking much different than they once did.
The next couple of years Strathmore will grow
faster than it has for a few years. We used to grow
really fast and then it slowed down for a few years
and now it is picking up again, said Chief Administrative Officer for the town Dwight Stanford.
2001 saw the construction of phase one of the
Aquatic Centre, and the then new Strathmore
High School and Civic Centre. In 2003 coffee lovers rejoiced when the Pine Road Tim Hortons location was built. That was a big year for growth
in the area which also saw Extra Foods turn into
a No Frills, and bring a Super Store liquor store
and gas station. The Travelodge was also built
that year.
Most of the early 2000s saw growth in almost
every aspect of Strathmores way of life, from the
new Hope Community Covenant Church (2004),
to McDonalds (2005), Wal-Mart (2005), Sobeys
(2007) and most of the Ranch Market businesses
being developed. 2010 to now has seen a large
number of renovations and upgrades with not
as many new developments coming in, but now
growth is once again upon us.
As everyone knows Co-op is moving to Edgefield Place in a large new location, and right be-

side it Peavey Mart is marking their claim. The

new agricultural based store will be an asset to
both people in town and our rural neighbours
with their variety of products.
They have a variety of things all kinds of
things you really wouldnt think of when you go
through it, said Chief Administrative Officer for
the town Dwight Stanford.
Over the past couple of years road works and
paving projects have been completed around the
town. Thomas Drive has been redone, and the
second coat of asphalt will be put on this year.
Lakeside Blvd, 2nd St. and 4 Ave. are all going to
see a facelift this summer and fall.
Town administration along with Golden Hills
School Division have been looking at different areas in town for new school site locations.
In the future the town is going to need several more schools. We have enough land in town
for roughly 50,000 people so there will be many
more schools in the future, said Stanford.
There are 582 acres of pivot fields that some day
host new development on those lands, though its
unknown at this time what that will look like.
Water and sewer capacity had been a concern a
number of years ago but with the new Wildflower
reservoir and other projects around town, things
are looking good and ready for the growth that
is coming.
A census is being conducted this April to determine just how much the town has really grown
over the last few years.

Community spotlight: Signal Driving School

RAYVEN MOORE
SAY Times Contributor

Signal Driving School is a locally owned and
operated business that provides a Drive for Life
Defensive Driving Program.
It is run by husband and wife team Selina and
Shiraz Merchant who have been in the business
for over 25 years. They provide classroom and road experience for all new
drivers.
The Merchants business has
brought an easily accessible opportunity to Strathmore residents. The
courses are helpful to students trying to obtain their Graduated Driver
Licensing. The classroom work provides the knowledge young drivers
need to drive defensibly. This is reinforced during the practice hours in
which students drive with the qualified instructors.
Students practice residential driving, highway
driving and city driving. The course creates safe
drivers and goes far beyond what is available to
drivers in the Basic License Drivers Handbook.
I have taken the course and found it incredibly worthwhile. It helped me pass the standard
Alberta Class 5 road test and gave me the confidence I needed in myself.
It also provided my parents with peace of mind
and by completing the course my insurance rates
were lowered. I also found the Merchants to be

incredibly personable. They are very involved in

their students lives and they follow up on their
progress throughout the Albertas Graduated
Driver Licensing Program.
The Merchants believe that Strathmore is an
ideal place for students to develop their skills as
drivers because of the quiet residential areas and
the lack of traffic in town.
One thing that can be a challenge
to new drivers is understanding the
road markings around town. They
help students overcome this challenge by consistently emphasizing
the rules of the road both in the
classroom and while driving with
their students.
When driving with the Merchants
they were incredibly calm and patient. They explained things logically
and gave me the opportunity to develop my skills as a pro-active driver.
By the end of the course I felt well
prepared for my exam and felt confident in my
ability to drive safety.
For any new drivers or individuals wishing to
sharpen their skills I would highly recommend
contacting Signal Driving School at 403-235-5000
or e-mailing them at selina@signaldrivingschool.
ca. Their services are also offered in Chestermere.
For more information visit their website (www.
signaldrivingschool.ca). However, if you are looking at booking a course, I would suggest you do
it soon as the summer fills up fast!

SloPitch and Mothers Day reasons to drink!

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
So Im now playing SloPitch in the local league
after a 30-year absence! How the league kept going
without me all these years is still a mystery to me!
But, here I am, a little older, hopefully a little wiser,
and definitely a little heavier.
In fact, theres no hiding from your shadow. If you
feel pretty good about yourself, or youve been reciting positive sayings to yourself about how youre
comfortable in your skin that all vanishes when
you see your shadow on a sunny ball night in Carseland!
Now that could also explain why I got booed at
my very first at bat!
It would mean six more weeks of winter! Or, it
could also mean I sucked as a teacher, and this was
their chance to let me know!
A big shout out to Jugz and Thugz, who we
played at Crowfoot Diamond last week. What a fun
bunch of people to play! Of course, more of their
team knew me than I thought, and I took a lot of
joking and heckling! By the way Jugz and Thugz
Im not 74 years old!
I got bugged about the hat I wore, the one high
swing I whiffed on, and how I ran (waddled)! We
were winning in the second game, and their team
was starting to argue a bit. I finally yelled out, if
you wanna yell at me again, thats okay! Meanwhile,
my team has now banned me from wearing my hat
again whats so wrong with a grey corduroy ball
hat I thought it was retro!?
Mothers Day also hit earlier this month, and of
course my daughter was totally unprepared! I mean,
when its 3 oclock in the afternoon, on Mothers
Day and youre starting to shop, should you be surprised when all the cards are gone?!
Breanne was trying to pick through the last dregs
of cards left behind by other last minute kids, and
turned to me in a panic. What am I gonna do,
theyre all picked over!
Now, a Brady Bunch or Cosby Show dad would

have had a wise idea and lesson for her to hear (actually, with the news lately, Im better off not being
Cliff Huxtable!). So, all I was left with, was my modern day sarcasm from the classic book: How NOT
to Be a Comforting Dad When Your Kid Screws Up.
This may not have been a best-seller, but I love
it! So, with almost no cards to pick from, and her
sad, doe-like eyes, begging for help, I responded.
Whats the big deal, Bree its 3 oclock. You still
have nine hours until Moms special day is over! I
mean, all she did, was give you life!
Breanne was not impressed, and she asked me
to cut it out, and just help! I, however, was not yet
done. Gee, I can hardly wait for next month, Breanne.
She looked back at me with a blank expression.
Thats when I knew Deb would probably be doing
a similar shopping trip with her late on Fathers
Day! I brought us back to the Mothers Day panic.
Breanne, Breanne, I have a great idea, I said in
my most convincingly concerned voice. Get Mom a
Sympathy card!
She looked more confused than normal, and
asked why? I said, you buy a Sympathy card, and
write on it: sorry, Im such a crappy daughter!
I laughed right out loud at that one this whole
shopping trip was way more fun than I thought! Breanne really did get Deb a great gift she bought
her a bouquet of roses, so she did redeem herself!
So, another Mothers day has come and gone, and
I look forward with some worry about Fathers
Day. Im sure Breanne will be in a tizzy again,
struggling to get that perfect gift for good old dad!
But, dont worry Ill have the last laugh, even
years from now, when Im dead! Guess whos getting that old corduroy hat in the will?

ATCO Torch
Relay to open
for games
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

The Strathmore 2015 Alberta 55 Plus
Summer Games will kick off of Thursday, July 16 with the ATCO Torch Relay.
The relay acts as the ceremonial
opening of the games, which mirrors
the carrying of the torch to open the
Olympic games.
The event will start at Kinsmen Park at
10:30 a.m. Participants will make their
way through Strathmore before finally
finishing at the Agriculture grounds.
Local residents of all ages are invited to
partake in the event. About 15 people
will be chosen to run the relay.
Participants will be allowed to participate by any means whether it be walking, running or using their wheelchair
for the relay.
The Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games
are a way to showcase Strathmore and
area to people from all over Alberta.
According to Larry Tucker, one of
the events organizers, the games are a
chance for people over the age of 55
to take part in sports and activities that
they love. The Strathmore 2015 Alberta
55 Plus Summer Games will take place
July 16-19.
If you would like to take part in the
relay or would like to get more information, you can either call the games
office or Larry Tucker at 403-934 5087.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS

Armand & Mary Ellen (Sis) Corbiell

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Armand Corbiells grandfather was Felix Corbiell, born in Quebec, who first
moved to Norway, Mich., then to the Cluny Area in 1910. Armands father, Armand
(Senior) was also born in Norway, Mich.
and also made the
move to the Cluny
Area. By the age of
14, he had completed
his schooling in Cluny, and was attending the Jesuit College
in Edmonton, when
he received word his
father had suddenly
passed away. On returning to Cluny, he
assisted his mother
to operate the farm,
which included purchasing more land
from CPR to homestead. Armand Jr.
was born in Cluny
in March 1936, the
middle of three children, and has a cousin Damien Corbiell (see article of June
15, 2012)
This is now a fifth generation farm
family in the Cluny area. It is a mixed
farm, totaling about 3,000 acres of seeded crop, hay and pasture. A Purebred
Hereford cattle operation has operated
here for the last 60 years.
Mary Ellens (Plante) family originated
in Quebec. Her great-grandfather, born
in 1888, came to Gleichen where he purchased CPR land to homestead. Mary Ellen was born on the farm at Gleichen in
1938. She has two brothers and a sister.
Both she and Armand attended school at
Gleichen and Cluny, and Armand like his
father attended St Anthonys Jesuit Col-

lege in Edmonton. They met at a school

dance in Cluny, and were married in August 1956. They have five children, 10
grandchildren and six and a half greatgrandchildren.
All of the family has been involved in
Cluny and Gleichen area activities, including being 4-H leaders and 4-H club
members. They have
played and coached
local hockey, been
AG Society members,
arena board members, gymkhana club,
church council and
fireman directors. Armand has served on
the boards of both
the Canadian and
Alberta Hereford Associations, and been
president of both.
He has sat on the All
Breeds Board and
the Canadian Cattlemens
Association,
and recently received
his 60-year pin from
the Canadian Hereford Association, and
is a Charter Member of Cluny Lions.
Mary Ellen was an original member
of the board that put together the new
Cluny/Gleichen History Book, and has
served with CWL, the arena board, and
the AG Society. Armand and Mary Ellen
are on the Canadian Hereford Association Honour Roll, and Corbiell Herefords
were awarded The Bank of Montreal
Farm Family Award in 2005.
The main changes in the area, in the
past almost 70 years, are the twinning of
the TransCanada Highway, installation of
telephone service, and the specialization
of technology for farming. Farming is
certainly very different since they started
in the early 50s.

Aspen Crossing hosted its
Inaugural Tour of the railway on May 15.
Those invited to the grand
opening got to experience
the train ride firsthand with

The tour was the dream
of Aspen Crossing owner
Jason Thornhill, who says
that part of the tour is about
learning about Alberta when
the trains were used to pull
grain.
The event started with
a prayer, before Thornhill
officially opened the train
with ceremonial champagne
smashing against the caboose. Guests then boarded

The tour, which consisted
of a 22.5 kilometer track,
took roughly three hours to
complete. It departed from
Aspen Crossing heading towards Arrowwood, where
it was stopped by outlaws
who boarded the train.
The train then headed
towards Blackie where the
train stopped at a makeshift graveyard, where the
outlaws buried their stolen
loot before having a shootout with the Sheriff and his

the train passes by and will
hopefully become part of
the tour.

Learning to communicate through sign language

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

When your ability to communicate has been
drastically altered, as is the case with Dee-Ann
Wagner-Mercer, it can feel a little lonely.
She was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis 2,
NF2, when she was 13-years-old. In high school
she noticed her hearing was changing, and in
2001 things changed drastically.
Now deaf, and legally blind, finding ways to
talk with friends, or new people, as the out-going
mom once did is tough. Not many
people know sign language, nor
do many think about the fact they
can bring a notepad, or a tablet as
a way to communicate with her.
Thats why on Thursday nights,
from 4-5 p.m. now until June 25 at
the Strathmore Municipal Library,
she is teaching people how to sign.
Weve always encouraged our
patrons to bring their ideas to the
library. In the past we have accommodated many great suggestions
from patrons and this one was such
a unique opportunity that we simply could not pass up, said Carmen Erison, assistant director of library services.
The first night was held on May 14, and Wagner-Mercer said she was touched by how many
people showed a keen interest to learn.
Everyone is welcome to the group regardless
of age or skill level. My idea was to get people
together visiting in sign language ... Deafness can
be a lonely place, said Wagner-Mercer.
Im stepping out of my comfort zone to try and
get more out there in the community. Ive tried
to set an example for my daughter about giving
to our community, I also didnt want her seeing
her mom hiding in the house because she is deaf.
Trust me its very easy to do.
I want her to see Im doing my best to over-

come obstacles thrown at me. Id like to be an active member of our community. The more people
in our community that are able to communicate
with our deaf members in Strathmore, makes it
much less isolating.
The group was made up of a mix of advanced
signers, and beginners. There were also five kids
between the ages of three and 10 who attended
the first week. Wagner-Mercer said for now they
are learning the alphabet and basic signing.
Once everyone is more comfortable with sign
they plan to work on lessons from ASLU, which is
an online course for learning American Sign Language (ASL); their website can be found at www.lifeprint.
com.
Wagner-Mercer does have permission to use the website and course,
but did say she is not certified, she
is just showing others how to communicate with her.
Learning such a visual language
is much better done in groups, in
person and with practice. If you
dont use it you lose it, said Wagner-Mercer.
A great way to learn sign language is to dive in and start using it
regardless of your level. The more you use it the
better and more comfy a user will become.
There are two deaf members in the group, including Wagner-Mercer.
She said the plan for now is to take a break near
the end of June for the summer, and then come
back in the fall.
Its also fitting that she began the classes in
May, which is Neurofibromatosis Month, the condition she has. NF2 is rare, occurring in one out
of 25,000 births. Multiple tumours and lesions,
mostly occurring on the cranial and spinal nerves,
are NF2s most common characterization. Hearing
loss in the teenage years or early 20s is generally
the first symptom.

A roast, a toast to Sorenson

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Due to the changes in the boundaries
coming for the next election, long-time
MP Kevin Sorenson will no longer be
the representative for this municipality.
Judi Wilson, a friend and supporter of
Sorenson, will be hosting a roast in his
honour on June 6.
Its going to be funny, truthful, everyone is aware theyve got to keep it
clean, said Wilson.
There will be 10 speakers for the
roast that will include residents of the
Strathmore and Chestermere areas.
One former MP that also worked with
Sorenson in Ottawa is scheduled to attend, though his name is not being re-

leased yet.
Kevin is really looking forward to
showing his appreciation to the people
who have shown him so much support, hes hoping that his ties here will
remain strong, said Wilson.
Hes moving out of the constituency,
but not out of our life, hes still going
to be in Ottawa, and his heart is in the
Strathmore-Chestermere area.
Wilson said she put on the roast to
be able to give everyone who wants to,
a chance to say goodbye.
He has been what we all hope to
have our politicians be, truthful, honest, upfront, does what he says hes going to do, said Wilson.
He cares about the people and their
issues.

Sorenson would host town hall meetings and make sure that each person
that attended with a question was able
to ask it.
He has always known and tried to
meet the needs of the community, even
with his cabinet post.

Times Contributor

When Richard and Lois Haskayne gave
a million dollars in 2014, to retire Rosebud Centre of the Arts (RCAs) mortgage
debt, their giving had only begun.
They also are very interested in helping us take a step forward, said Paul
Muir, Rosebud School of the Arts (RSAs)
education director. So the Haskaynes
made a new promise: well match anything thats donated in 2015, dollar for
dollar, up to $250 000.
If we (raise $250 000), it actually
means $500,000, Muir said. Thats a
record-breaking fundraising year. Its so
generous. Were so grateful.
Lois Haskayne is also being blessed
because she knows shes blessing the
community that she grew up in.
The Haskaynes will match donations
to all RCA and RSA projects.
If someone wants to donate $1,000
to the scholarship fund, that $1,000 will
still go to the scholarship fund. An additional $1,000 will go to the discretionary
fund as part of the matching campaign,
Muir explained. Youre going to bless
the scholarship fund, but youre also going to bless the rest of the organization.
If someone donates a car (through
Donate a Car Canada) in the name of
Rosebud School of the Arts, well get
that $75 donation, but even that will get
matched by the Haskaynes generosity.
The hope is that well be able to do
some of those things weve put off for
so many years, like some long-overdue
repairs on our 100-plus year-old buildings. Its an exciting time.
Muir also hopes The Harvest will en-

courage donors to build up the scholarship fund, which directly affects students deciding to enrol or continue their
studies. Hes grateful that Calvista, an accounting firm, has offered two new RSA
scholarships.
As of mid-May, RCA donors had given
$86,000, which the Haskaynes matched,
to become $172,000. RCA is celebrating
with silo-shaped displays, raising grain
as donors keep giving, and honouring
donors with immediate tax receipts and
thank yous.
Muir invites people considering donating to talk with him or Adam Furfaro, RCAs executive director, or Jenny
Matechuk in Development and Donor
Relations.
We love it when we get to get to
know our donors, because theyre investing in us, Muir said. We certainly
want to get to know them too and invest
in them as well.
You may also donate directly at 800267-7553 or www.rosebudtheatre.com.
RSA students are like seeds being
planted in the rich fertile soil of RSA,
Furfaro wrote in an e-mail. They need
care, water, sunlight and a whole lot of
prayer, from parents, staff, patrons, donors, and the entire hamlet. Then theyre
sent out to be food and salt and light to
the world.
Youre not just donating to a theatre.
Youre donating to an organization thats
pouring their love, investment and resources into young people and making
a difference in their lives, Muir said.
We all feel so honoured and humbled
to get to be shepherds and mentors of
those hearts for a period of time. Its an
incredible responsibility.

Boulevard of Dreams opens in Edgefield

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Boulevard of Dreams will celebrate
the Edgefields development grand
opening on May 23 on the neighbourhoods main boulevard.
Brianna Bowie, president of Bowie
Bear Marketing and Sales Consulting,
said the grand opening will include
many festivities with a community feel.
I have the Bank of Montreal coming
with their bear, Ive got a petting zoo
and free food, Bowie said. Typically
they have all the brochures of hockey
and golf, telling everybody how good
the town is and I thought why not
just bring the town. I think Id love it
if were in a new community and the
town and organizations get a feel for it
and get entertained.
Bowie added that a parade will make
their way down the main road of the
new development at 2 p.m. and a town
fair will be stationed underneath the
Edgefield sign.
No ones ever done what Im doing
and I fortunately talked this developer
into letting me try it, she said. They

pretty much just jumped at the opportunity to come and meet new people
coming into the town to sign up to their
organizations, its kind of a win-win.
The event has seen nothing but tremendous support from the community.
Bowie emphasized on how important this development is for the area.
Its important that we get these
builders going and I really just wanted
to put my 100 per cent effort into making that happen, said Bowie.
Her company came up with the Boulevard of Dreams slogan because she
believes people should have a feeling
of comfort as soon as they see their
new homes.
Our branding and my whole idea of
how Edgefield was started with a sort
of build it and well come theme, a
Happily Ever After in Edgefield. A field
of dreams, because originally it was a
big field, so I was playing on all of that
in fairy tales, said Bowie.
Edgefield is thrilled with the event
as she admits that they wanted to go
above and beyond.
The event will run from 12-5 p.m.
and the parade will be at 2 p.m.

Disc Golf project underway

CHELSEA DYCK
Times Contributor
In some peoples eyes, Strathmore
doesnt have a lot of low-cost activities
that cater to a range of ages or ability
types.
This year, the Strathmore Assembly of
Youth has taken on a very large project,
aimed at changing this.
The group has spent the last year-anda-half planning and fundraising to build
a disc-golf course in Strathmore.
Disc golf is a sport that every person
can play whether they are six or 76 years
old. If you can get around Strathmores

parks and throw a Frisbee, you can play

disc golf!
Each hole consists of a cement tee
pad, a sign with hole information, and
a basket. SAY has raised $19,000 to pay
for the supplies needed for the course.
Many of the businesses that sponsored
this group are locally owned in Strathmore and a number of individuals and
businesses have helped the group with
construction.
All of these sponsors have made a
huge impact on the progress of our
community and are greatly thanked on
behalf of Strathmore and SAY.
Course construction has begun, with

Teddy Bears Picnic

the installation of concrete tee pads and

signs over the May-long weekend. Baskets will be added and the course will
be ready for use by the beginning of
June.
SAY will be hosting a Grand Opening
Tournament on July 1. This tournament
will include a novice, intermediate, and
pro category. Community members are
encouraged to take part, or set up a
lawn chair at their favourite hole and
watch.
There will also be a free beginners
class, called Learn to Play Disc-Golf, at
2 p.m. on July 1. Lessons will be held
at hole number one, which is located
at Brentwood School. No sign-up is required to take part in the free lessons. To
register for the tournament or for more
information about the course, please

Last week, April 21, Telus
announced that they plan to
invest $1.2 million this year
in Strathmore to improve
the communications infrastructure. This will mean that
Telus-provided services will
become faster and more effective.
The deal is part of Teluss
larger investment in Alberta.
By 2018 they plan to have
invested $4.2 billion in the
province in the hopes of
improving the services that
they offer to all aspects of
the community.
At the end of the planned
investment period Telus will
have put $45 billion into Alberta since 2000.
This investment will bring
faster, higher-capacity Internet service to more local
homes and businesses and
increase wireless speeds in
and around the community,
said Fred Weinheimer, TELUS
Alberta South general manager in a press release.
Demand for Internet and
wireless capacity is exploding in Strathmore as the
community continues to
grow, and this sustained investment will ensure our customers here continue to have

The Strathmore Ag Society grounds hosted the annual High School Rodeo on May 16 - 17.
There were 11 local rodeo participants including the Matching Vests team of Rayna Longeway (l-r), Jake Burwash, Makayla Boisjoli, Hayze Stevens and Shelby Boisjoli. The Tie dye
team consisted of Jewel Brister, Taylor Hayes, Destiny Stevens and Ashley Nelson. Both
the Stevens and Boisjoli tandems had success in the team roping competitions.

Many young rodeo participants
showed off their lassoing skills at the annual High School Rodeo on May 16 and
17 at the Strathmore Ag Society rodeo
grounds.
Event organizer Crystal Stevens was
enthused with all the riders performances despite a wet first day.
It was excellent, there was no problems with the weather, said Stevens.
The grounds were pretty good and no
one got hurt, everyone was safe, the
contestants were happy.

She praised the local contingent that

put on a great show.
We had approximately 11 local contestants. My kids, Hayze and Destiny,
were first and second in the team roping
on Sunday, said Stevens.
Makayla and Shelby Boisjoli won the
average in the team roping and they
were from Langdon.
She also added that there were many
other locals that gained points for placing one through 10 in the rodeo events.
The points will be carried into the season end event in Nanton on May 23 - 24,
in where, if they finish in the Top 10,
they could earn a berth in the provin-

cials in Grande Prairie from June 5-7.

The community was very supportive
of the rodeo.
The Town of Strathmore gave the
kids the pool after the rodeo. The theatre also gave the kids $5 movies with
their numbers, said Stevens.
All the kids got to enjoy the community which is something new for the
High School Rodeo in Strathmore. We
appreciated all the community involvement and sponsorship.
The biggest thing that Stevens would
change next year is to try to encourage
more people to come out and watch an
entertaining rodeo.

JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

The Wheatland Kings are excited to announce the addition of
Zac Searby to their staff as goaltending coach.
Searby, who had a brief stint
with the Wheatland Kings in his
career, is thrilled to be coming to
the junior B club and has some
familiarity with head coach Jeremy Blumes.
I worked with Jeremy a couple of years back with the Royals midget double A group and
things worked out, the goalies
seemed pretty happy and saw
improvement throughout the
year, said Searby.
He is currently employed with
David Marcouxs School of Goaltending (D.M.S.G) where he has
worked with many professional
and junior goalies, and is hoping to bring his experience to the
Kings crease.
When it comes to juniors, all
the way down to atom, the kids
are focusing on tracking the
puck, seeing it all the way, focusing on the second and third shot
as opposed to watching it come
in, said Searby.
He will be looking to add a certain style to the goalies that will
make them successful.
A very hybrid goalie and a very
reactive goalie. Im not a huge,
big, blocking style of goalie, he
said. If you can do the job and
get the job done, then absolutely,
but I need a guy that can read the
shot and be able to react.
This is the first go around for
Searby being full-time on a junior
team, and he is looking forward
to seeing his goalies on a nightly
basis.
Its going to be a lot of fun
seeing them grow (and) seeing
them play hard, said Searby.

Strathmores Sarah Lecavalier has

had an impressive hockey resume
this far with her success at the Canada Winter Games and the U18 levels recently.
She was fortunate enough to get
recognized and earned a spot with
the North Dakota Fighting Sioux
starting in the 2016-2017 season.
Its definitely a huge weight off
my shoulders. I wanted to be committed before the Canada Games,
but I had to focus on that tournament for a bit, said Lecavalier
All the work I have put in so far

North Dakota has put some

know if I put in the work, then that
school will be behind me the rest of
my career.
Lecavalier was initially contacted
several times over the course of the
season and felt strongly about her
decision.
Everyone says theres a feeling
you get when you go to university
and you visit it, Lecavallier said.
I got that feeling. It was something that is special and you know
its where you want to be for four
years.
The feedback about the program
has been nothing but positive.
The hockey team is amazing,
their facilities are top notch and
the coaching staff is incredible. It
was the best fit for me and Im really happy with my decision, said
Lecavalier.
The coaches have given her some
expectations if she is to play in every game.
Weve talked a little bit, obviously Ive got to earn my ice, but Im
going to be an aggressive forward
that can get the puck in the corners
and also put the puck in the net,
said Lecavalier.
The Fighting Sioux have a certain
way of inserting players into their
line up.
North Dakota does it in a specific way, they plan out how many
freshmen theyll have and seniors
leaving. It should be a bit of a new
team when I go, said Lecavalier.
She plans on enrolling in dentistry once her career starts with the
Fighting Sioux.

Parker: an inspiration
to many
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Strathmore High School student Parker Petruska has

had a positive outlook on life and has not let cerebral
palsy get in the way of his favourite things in life - especially when it comes to him playing hockey. However,
unlike most hockey players, Petruska has overcome numerous obstacles and requires the use of a wheelchair to
partake in his favourite sport.
Parkers a special kid and ever since he came to the
high school a couple of years ago, said Strathmore High
Schools Vice Principal and Bisons assistant coach Doug
Raycroft. Hes kind of had a special bond with all the
Hockey Academy and Bison players because he loves
the game so much
Anytime that kids talk to him about hockey, he just
lights up. Theres an immediate connection there and
when you talk to Parker, he may have some limitations
but its not in his mind and soon as the kids realize that,
it brings out the better qualities in them.
Petruska, who is 18 and started playing hockey seven
years ago, eat, sleeps and breathes the sport.
This season has been the most memorable one for him
as he played for the Calgary Power Hockey League with
the Knights and they won the regular season title but fell
short by a goal in overtime in the final.
He was runner up for Playoff MVP and was positive
about his teams play all season.
We played good together and played hard as a team,
said Petruska.
He was very instrumental throughout the season to the
UFA Bisons as he would do laundry twice a week after
practice, and leave encouraging words that he would
come up with himself on the rooms whiteboard.
Hes a pretty tough guy and he really enjoys interacting with people, even though its hard for him some-

times, said Raycroft. Thats something thats going

to help him through time because people want to be
around him, deal with him, want to work with him.
The commitment from the students to Parker has been
encouraging in itself and continues to grow.
It just happened, the kids really took to him naturally,
so it wasnt like you have to meet with Parker and do
anything, Raycroft. Everything theyve done for Parker
has been totally on their own.
Petruska plans to start up a little business in the summer to collect used sports equipment by donation.
He then will organize them into bags and if there is a
piece of equipment missing, he will then try to replace
the item.
There will be a bin set up at various hockey camps
throughout the summer for drop off.
For more information on where to drop off the equipment, you can contact Michelle Bishop via e-mail (mbishop6@telus.net).

Spots still open in Easy Going golf tourney

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore 2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games

committee are looking to fill more spots for the Easy
Going golf tournament at the Strathmore Golf Club on
May 30.
Wed love to have 128 golfers and right now we have
85, said Colleen Huber, the games manager. Its a very
fun tournament, thats why its called the Easy Going
Open you can be super skilled or if youre just a beginner golfer, there will be lots of fun for you there too.
The tournament format will have a fun look for all
players.
Its just a scramble best ball tournament and people
have the opportunity to purchase a passport, where they
can go into a few different games on the golf course as
well as buy some mulligans, said Huber.
There will also be sponsored holes for various games

403-874-6486

as well.
We have two insurance companies doing hole-in-one
prizes on two different holes and we have some fun contests that will be a little bit different like fun driving
contests, Huber said. Some of the other hole contests
arent about people having the best skill, theres stuff
like, if your ball goes in the water, you get to put your
name down for draws.
If you are a member at the golf course the fee is $110,
while non-members pay $125, and that includes range
balls, a cart, and a round of golf and steak dinner.
Following the golf, there will be a silent auction with
some great items up for grabs.
Theres a chance for someone to bid on a glider ride,
theres also things like party packs from Aussie Rules in
Calgary, she said. Weve got some great different golf
courses that people can bid on, and Drumhellers Passion Play is another one that we have.
The tournament will have a 2 p.m. shotgun start.

Zarowny had successful campaigns

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Strathmores Tyson Zarowny learned

a lot between playing with the local
Reds baseball program and later playing for the Lethbridge-based Prairie
Baseball Academy over the past two
seasons.
The centre fielder admits it was an
enjoyable experience with the academy
but the calibre of baseball was an adjustment being at the diamond every
day.
The competitiveness is quite a lot
higher, every game, everyone is going
100 per cent all the time, he said.
( Just) playing so often in the spring,
like practicing every day, then playing
four games with a big road trip in between is probably the biggest thing.
He credits his three years previous
with the Strathmore Reds to developing his all-around game.

My (Reds) coach Zane Anderson

played college ball, he helped us with
that quite a bit because he knew what
it was like and just learning how to play
the game right, said Zarowny.
There is one specific area of his game
that he will focus on getting better at
for next season.
My hitting can always get better, if
you just keep working on it, itll always
get better, said Zarowny.
His coaches felt that if he found some
consistency in his game, he would be
successful.
Just to pretty much always be a gamer, like always doing whatever you can
to help the team win, he said.
Always being aware and just making sure you get a good read on a ball
because that could be the difference of
catching or not.
He has been talking to schools in Texas and New Mexico and is hoping to
play at one of them in the near future.

Former Strathmore Reds outfielder Tyson

Zarowny had enjoyed learning how to be a better
baseball player in his two seasons with the Prairie
Baseball Academy.

William Robert
William Robert Fawkes, born in
Strathmore on January 1, 1926 to
Margaret and William Fawkes of Namaka passed
away Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at Nanaimo Hospital.
Schooling was at the Namaka School and later
spent a short time with the R.C.A.F. He farmed and
ranched in Southern Alberta marrying Yvonne Cote.
They had two daughters Heather (Dale), Monica
(Michael), and grandchildren Darren (Krista), Scott
(Renae), Colin (Cindy), Jennifer, and Rachel. Greatgrandchildren Aidan, Connor, Parker, Karson, and
Lily.
Predeceased by his parents and sister Nancy, he
is leaving behind brother Jack, sisters Margaret,
Jean, and their families. In 1952 with so many others, including cousins and a nephew, Bill contracted
polio. He lost a lot of strength in his left arm and
throat. He continued to farm but found it difficult.
The family moved to Strathmore and he was on the
road selling, remaining optimistically stoic with incredible patience.
In 1973 Bill married Doris Stangier, and eventually they moved to Qualicum Beach B.C. He loved
his boat on the ocean and fly-fishing on Little Qualicum River.
His big and strong hands created beautiful
things including leatherwork, hundreds of flies, and
beautifully crafted bamboo rods. His scroll-work
was everywhere and you could never leave without
at least one piece.
Doris passed away May 3, 2003 and he missed
her greatly. He had many friends in the Bowser area
and always looked forward to carpet bowling.
His sense of humor was dry and when he said
something funny he enjoyed laughing with you as
much as the joke. He cherished time with Dawn
and Lawrence, Gilbert and Lorraine, Troy and Dierdre to list a few.
A family gravesite service was held on Thursday,
May 14th, at the Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens in
Cedar B.C. on a beautiful sunny west coast day.
Our family would like to sincerely thank the staff
at the Gardens for their friendship and caring. Dad
adored the staff and his friends there were very
special to him.

Mortgage Matters by Strathmores Mortgage Specialist

With all that is going on in the world today the Bank of Canada has lowered its prime lending
rate several times consecuitively. What does this mean for the citizens of Strathmore? Well
now is a great time to buy a new home. When negotiating the purchase price of your new
home people dont often think about what the real cost of the home is because most people
are so focused on the purchase price they forget about the price to finance. First time home
buyers the time is now dont wait. In todays low interest market the overall price of the
home is effectively reduced by the interest rate itself. Call me today and get preapproved. I will
let you know how much you can afford so that you can go out house hunting
Today is also a great day to refinance your existing home. Even with a
prepayment penalty you can save thousands of dollars off of your mortgage
by refinancing in todays super low interest rate market. Lock in now for
new lower rate and save money. Call me today youll be glad you did
